Compatibility Advice please: Mackie Onyx 1620i connect to Late 2012 iMac 10.8.5 Firewire to Thunderbolt

I'd like to buy a Mackie Onyx 1620i Firewire mixer/control surface for my home studio set up. I have a late 2012 iMac 10.8.5 with Thunderbolt connectors but no Firewire. I know that Apple provide a Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor but looking around online it seems people have had trouble getting these two pieces of kit to work together. I've read all the available info I can find online about running them.. re:correct serial number of the Mackie, the need for any drivers etc.. but doubt still hangs over the issue. Obviously I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on the wrong piece of equipment. Has anyone successfully run the Mackie Onyx and iMac described?.. or does anyone have sufficient expertise to deliver a definitive answer one way or the other? I'd be most grateful for any help.
Thanks

Based on my experience with the Onyx and two clients of mine who have had nothing but issues with it since day one... ... I cannot recommend it for use with a Mac....
As an example of the type of issue I am referring to.... Mackie released two hardware versions of the Onyx... The first version no longer works with modern versions of OS X.... and modern Macs.. and this can be identified by the serial number of the unit as shown on their Driver information page....
http://www.mackie.com/products/onyxiseries/drivers/
For those with the first version.... Mackie left them 'high and dry' with no solution to their issues other than to buy the newer, second hardware version!
The second version.... again identified by the serial number.... has worked with OS X versions up to 10.8 but only for certain people.. Others have continued to report issues using the latest drivers and 10.8.5... and it does not appear to be supported for any version of OS X higher than 10.8.... which also means it doesn't work reliably with the more modern Macs which require 10.9 as a minimum OS X.
Based on these facts... again, I cannot and will not recommend this product for use with modern Macs and OS X versions.
Note: This is my personal opinion..... and others may have differing opinions depending on their own experiences with the product.

  • Can I connect my late-2012 iMac to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro?

I've just bought a new late 2012 27" iMac and also have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro.
I also purchased a Thunderbolt cable, is there anyway I can use this to connect the two? If not... do I have any options for file sharing between the two?

The Thunderbolt cable is useless to connect both Macs. Mid 2010 MacBooks Pro have got Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt.
If you want to use Target Disk Mode in order to connect both Macs, you have to buy two things: the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, and a FireWire cable to connect the adapter and the MacBook. You have to connect the Thunderbolt adapter to the Thunderbolt port of the iMac.
Then, if you want to transfer old files from the backup, you can use Migration Assistant if you want to migrate applications and user accounts (if you haven't set up the iMac, use Setup Assistant. If you want to transfer individual files, use Target Disk Mode

  • Firewire disconnects using motu 828 mkii and Mackie ONYX 1620i. Why?

Having replaced my trusted MOTU 828 mkii as it kept disconnecting itself and needed rebooting including removal and replacement of the firewire lead, I have encounted the very same problem with the Mackie ONYX 1620i.
Interestingly it happened recently when I powered up a guitar amp in the same room the other day so I called my electrician friend to check out all the power outlets/sockets on the studio main. His comments were "no issues".
    - As there are no other gemlins associated to the power I put it down as coincidence but had to rule it out.
I have tried a multiple of firewire leads and had the same results.
The only firewire device that seems ok is a Behringer FCA 202!!!! (Embarrasing!) - I use this for stereo output only (to the same active monitors) and swap FW lead and Output Jacks when using each device.
This is with Macbook Pro (2010), Logic Studio 9, iTunes, etc. (all purchased products and same problem with ALL audio software).
Using Lion but was an issue with previous OSX.
    Certainly a head scratcher.
    Anyone had any similar issues?

    That's interesting. Thanks Benjy.
Please be sure to update here if you do encounter anything similar.
I cannot afford to replace my 'live' desk as well as another soundcard.
Plus, I really don't think I should have to - Mackie and MOTU are established and reputable device manufacturers and this seems to be an Apple issue.
    Apple?
Anyone else sncountered similar and found a resolution after advice from apple?

  • Late 2012 iMac / OS X 10.8.5 / Wifi Connectivity Problems

Hello all I am the latest to suffer this so annoying problem. Just today when I came home it's not connecting. I have a late 2012 iMac model - OS X 10.8.5
It's been working for past 2 months...my iPad Mini is working as normal with the wifi but my iMac and also my iPhone 5, both are not connecting to the wifi
I have tried many things from what I have read in threads nothing has worked
    Can anyone advise please

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Connection speed of optical drive connection in late 2009 imac 21.5"

    Howdy,
I have the 21.5" late 2009 imac. I am wondering what the speed of the I/O of the hard drive if I replaced the optical drive? Is it sata 3?  I thought I read the early 2009 changed the optical connection to sata.  I just swapped out the 500 gb sata 3 drive for a 500 gb ssd and am thinking I might like to simply put the old one back in as an internal time machine.
    Thanks.

The HD interface in late 2009 iMacs is SATA-2 (3 Gbps), not SATA-3 (6 Gbps).
I can't find any definitive info about the optical drive interface but I am fairly sure is SATA, although I don't know if it is SATA 1 or SATA 2. Since you have already taken apart your iMac, you might check the connector on the optical drive -- it is most likely a non-standard 'mini' version, so finding an appropriate adaptor/replacement cable may be your biggest problem.
You might want to check out OWC's Data Doubler to see if it looks like something you could use.

  • Simple Hard Drive Compatability advice please

    Hi
Having a few problems in my mac not recognising my current hard drive at all, and some of my more techy friends suggest that has completely and irrecoverably died.
Just want to check with those of you that know more about this than me that a
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250gb 16mb serial ATA II
    http://www.stuff-uk.net/?s=ST-ST3250620AS
will work just lovely in my iMac g4 1ghz 17". Just wondering if there are any compatability issues with the 1ghz machine to any other of the Imac G4 series I've seen posted about on here.
Any sugestions for a superior drive of equal cost?
Anyone know if my current one can be brought back to useful life if even OSX reinstallation can't find the drive to install on?
    Thanks

Following on from this, I fitted my new hard drive (samsung 250gb) and got to the 'select destination' part of OSX installation, but could not locate it as an installation destination.
I can see the hard drive in system profiler so know it is connected correctly and works, but I am obivously missing a trick in formatting it or something.
What can I do to get my new hard drive to be recognised for software installation? I don't remember being able to access any of the functions of disk repairer to be able to do anything to the drive.
    Thanks

  • HT1750 After powering up, my (late 2012) iMac (bought March 2013) 'freezes' on the the grey log-in page for about 7 minutes before I can even enter my password and get started. Anyone know why, please?

It just hangs on the grey log-in page, with the mouse cursor stuck in top left corner, and unable to key password into window, until after about 7 minutes.
I always close all applications and programs prior to shut-down, but it's as if something is running in the back-ground...
    Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Late 2012 iMac 27" reboots while under load - please help!

It seems that every time I put my iMac under load, usually GPU load, such as in playing games or watching movies - I get a kernel panic and the system reboots.
I need help deciphering the dump.  The iMac has been doing this for the last few months and it seems to be getting worse.  Here are two kernel panics from today.  I was watching an mkv and copying (via terminal) a lot of files.

  • How to connect my PS3 to my iMac (Late 2012)

Hello every one, I have a question. Can I connect my PS3 to my late 2012 iMac with 27 inch over HDMI?
I looked in the internet but I only found such Adapters, for the older iMac's.
If I can do this, please let me know what I need and where I could get this Adapter or Device.
    Thank You.

You would need a display port to HDMI adapter. One of the newer features (which the 2012 iMac has) is that it can display this type of content like a DVD player to the iMac.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/TY600VC/A/griffin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-wit h-audio-dvi
Use the above link to review that item. It also has a DVI adapter that you would not use. But the display port to HDMI is the correct item. Then you connect the PS3 to the hdmi on it. I don't think it would passthrough audio though so you would have to figure something out for sound.

  • How to connect external display to iMac

which port do I use to connect external display to my iMac ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Depending on the iMac you have, you have different ports: Mini-DVI, Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt. Mini DisplayPort is available in 2009 and newer iMacs, and Thunderbolt is available in the Mid 2011 and Late 2012 iMac.
You have to use one of those ports to connect an external display. You will probably have to look for an adapter, depending on the port the external screen has got

I'm unable to download the German dictionary. I tried to do it with a 3g connection, but I failed because of that. A message said that I had to have a wi-fi connection to contine the download. Now I have a wi-fi connection, but I still can't download it. Could you give me advice please?

I did activate the German keyboard, and I entered in the application "notes",in which I typed a german word with the german keyboard... But I can't get "define". It only appears to me when I select a word from an ebook, but when I ask for the definition of a German word there, it simply says "no definition found", as if the German dictionary didn't exist. I know that it exists... When I tried for the first time to get a definition for a German word, it appeared a writing which asked me if I wanted to download the German dictionary. I selected "yes", but I was connected to a 3g connection at the moment, so the ipad didn't download the dictionary, but another writing told me that the download would have continued when I was connected to a wi-fi. It didn't. And now I don't know how to continue the download. I've installed the French dictionary and the English one, but for the German one that's what happened. Maybe the ipads work differently in each country?

  • Mackie Onyx 1620 Issues

    Dear Forum
Im using a Mackie Onyx 1620 Firewire option and am having some issues with Logic 7
    1) Sometimes the Computer doesnt reconise the desk and Logic will be playing back in the arrange window with no audio signal being received by the desk.
    2) I plug in a mic - the desk registers a level but Logic doesnt after pressing flashing red record (and setting the audio record path)
Im very confused on to what to set up in my AUDIO MIDI options on the MAC, do i set all output and input via the firewire on the desk. Or System output to Apple Built in AUdio?
If you can help i would be very grateful
    Thanks
    Jonny

Thank you very much for your reply, and your time.
Although my desk has main stereo outs (outputs 1-2) AND main outs 3-4, my firewire set up only allows for one stereo return, so i guess because of this, in logic I am only offered the option 'Out 1-2' for each selected track.
    ok, brainstorming here...
What if I connect my studio monitors directly to the compressors main outputs. Left speaker to the compressor output channel one, right speak to compressor output channel 2.
Then, run the main outs of the desk to the in's on the compressor.
Then to compare before/after effects of the compression settings, i just have to flick the bypass switch on the compressor unit ?
Then I would be left with the issue of recording the effected output. Perhaps I could do something in Logic like send the main stereo on a bus to a second logic stereo track and hit record?
I've over-thought this and im probably talking jibberish that makes no sense now - but if someone can please tell me if I'm way off track now or not? Thanks.
    (and sorry about this lol).

  • Mackie Onyx mixer

    Dear All,
I wonder how closely Mackie Onyx 1220i works with FCP and STP. Can we assign each track on the Mackie mixer to the audio track on FCP? If we move the sliders on the Mackie mixer, can we remotely control the track on FCP as well?
Lastly, can I use the Mackie mixer as a sound card through its firewire connection to hook up my Macbook Pro to XLR studio monitor, in my case, a pair of Adam A7X?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

anybody has any experience with connecting Mackie mixer to share, please?
    Thanks.
