  • External Hard Drives and iTunes, on Mac Book Pro and PC?

If you transfer your iTunes library from PC to an external hard drive, can you use itunes, from the external hard drive when you plug it into Mac Book Pro?
    I'm very confused about this!
All my music is on PC and I want to save it to my external hard drive. But I will no longer be using that PC afterwards.
I would like to use itunes on my Mac but it only has 128 Gb, not enough storage for my iTunes library.
So, can you use your transfered itunes library from the PC to external drive on your Mac?
Another question I have is, when your itunes is on your external hardrive can you still sync, make playlists and add new songs?
I don't know very much about external hard drives, but I need the space.

No.  Likely the drive is presently formatted NTFS which is no good on a Mac unless you want to buy spcial software to enable it (given your scenario it is not worth it).  The best format for Mac use is MacExtended, but your PC cannot write files to that.  The intermediate solution is to reformat the drive to DOS FAT, but as I already said this isn't ideal.
If it were me I would:
    1) With the PC copy the entire iTunes folder to the current external, presumably formatted as NTFS.
    2) Buy the new second drive I know I will need for backing up both my computer and my old external drive.  Format it as Mac extended.  In the long run you want to configure this for use with Time Machine but I can't help you with that because I can't run TM.  For the time being you are using it to temporarily store files.
    3) Using the Mac make sure the new drive is formatted to Mac extended.
    4) On the Mac copy the entire iTunes folder from the old drive to the new.
    5) With the Mac reformat the old drive to Mac extended.
    6) With the Mac copy the entire iTunes folder from the new drive to the old one which is now in the Mac friendly format.  Start iTunes with the option key held down as described earlier.
Others may be able to help with some details on formatting drives because I use an older system.  I know with my system version when you reformat or partition you lose all files on a drive which is why you have to have somewhere to temporarily store your library. I think they did some changes but I am not sure of the details.

  • I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • How do i move my photos from external hard drive to my local mac book pro hard drive?

I have my iphoto files on an external hard drive.  I need to move them to my local Mac Book Pro Hard drive and I want to do it accurately.  Anyone have any advice?

    THanks Niel.
In typical "me" fashion I asked the question and then did the leg work and researched the answer (instead of doing the research first!).  I learned exactly what you have posted here.  It sounds REALLY simple.  Thanks!

  • How to migrate iTunes Library from an external hard drive to a new Mac Book Pro?

How to migrate iTunes and iPhoto librarys from an external hard drive to a MacBook Pro?

    With iTunes:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to Home > Music on your computer. It will replace the one that may already be there and anything you have in it will be lost -- you could give the folder a different name just in case, and delete it yourself later.  Unplug the external and start iTunes.

  • Seagate plus compatible with mac book pro

Is seagate plus compatible with mac book pro and how do I know its backing up, where can I see the backed up files?

    Hello and welcome.
Click on the desktop - next to the Apple click  on "Finder - in the drop down menu click on "Preferences" - under "Show these items on the desktop" click on Hard disks and External disks. All disks inside the computer and connected outside will appear on your desktop. The external hard drive will be orange in color.
When you first connected that Seagate it should of asked you if you wanted to use that drive for Time Machine to backup to.

  • Where can I get an external battery that can power my Mac Book pro Retnia?

Where can I get an external battery that can power my Mac Book pro Retnia? When I get off a long fight, I have no time to recharge.

Try searching for "external battery macbook pro retina" (without quotes). You should find at least three potential answers in the first two pages.
I can't give you a specific recommendation, because I haven't (yet) tried any of them.

  • Is dragon speak family version compatible with Mac book Pro?

I received the dragon speak software recently and was wondering if it was compatible with Mac Book pro. Any information is greatly appreciated.

    Works for me.
It's not as good as the Windows version though. Unfortunately, there are no alternatives.

  • My camera Nikon D800 don't work with Mac Book Pro retina... Why ?

Somebody Know why my digital reflex Nikon d800 don't work with Mac Book Pro retina ?

I shoot tethered which requires that the D800 be recognized by the laptop.
However, I just figured it out. Nikon changed their USB protocol so that the D800 doesn't show up as a mass storage device.  That said, the d800 IS recognized by image capture and be computer in general, just not like previous Nikon dSLRs.  If you're tethering via Lightroom make sure the Nikon tethering plugin is enabled (which it may not be if you previously shot tethered with Canon).

  • External hard disk for use with quicksilver 2002 and intel imac 24"

i am wanting to purchase an external hard disk to be used with both a g4 and an intel imac 24".
i am considering a seagate barracuda 500gb or 750gb and purchasing an external case separately.
    interfaces - usb2, firewire 400 and 800.
Do I need a case with the "oxford chipset" to have it work.
Are all seagates compatible these days.
I was looking at a ultra ata100 hard disk. Will this disk connect automatically to the enclosure or will additional cables be required
Is the Ice Cube Generation II Ide enclosure ok to use.
    Appreciate any help given
    dual 1 gig G4, Intel 24" Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi-
The Ice Cube uses an Oxford chipset, (part of the external housings onboard controller) so it should be fine. The Oxford chipset has been shown to give the best compatibility and performance, thus being an desirable feature.

Using a Seagate Ultra ATA 100 drive should give you good, quiet, reliable service. There are no problems with the Seagate ATA drives.
Using the drive and housing with firewire will give you the best results, and firewire will allow you to use a bootable backup on the external drive, should the need be.
The housing comes with all the necessary cables to connect and use your external drive.
Insert the hard drive into the housing, connect the power and the firewire, format the hard drive, and you are ready to go..........

  • External hard-disk not working with firewire under Snow Leopard

Hi. I have a LaCie d2 external hard-disk that has Firewire 800, 400 and usb2. I previously used it on my old (angle-poise) iMac connecting using the Firewire 400 socket. I've just a got a new mac with Snow Leopard and I thought it would we best to connect to the LaCie with Firewire 800. However when I do this, the disc mounts ok, but browsing in the Finder is really slow and copying files from the disk to the imac seems to work at a really slow rate (less than USB1 speed) if at all ! However, I switched to using the USB2 connection instead and it works like a dream. What gives ? Is Firewire in Snow Leopard buggy ??

There's no problem with the drive.
Maybe true, and the drive would probably work fine with Leopard. One thing that's obvious is that Apple did make changes in the way that FireWire works in Snow Leopard. Many drives and drive manufacturers work well with SL, but there have also been reports of firmware issues by Western Digital and other companies.
Have you checked with your vendor to see if they are offering a firmware update for your drive?
BTW, I got a new FW case a few months ago while at a Fry's electronic store. The brand new USB2 and FW400 cables worked fine. The FW800 cable did not, but another cable came to the rescue. Just saying...
