Compatibility keynote 08 to 11

I copied old keynote '08 files from my laptop to a brand new iMac with new iWork ('11 ?) and Mavericks.
The old files now do not open but instead keynote asks first for a conversion to '09 format.
How can I do it since I only have iWork'08 in the laptop and iWork'11 in the iMac? Is there a way to go around this obstacle?

If you are exporting to Flash, it must be because you want your presentation used over the internet. If Flash is the only option you will accept for internet use, then you may be stuck.
However, exporting to Quicktime gives you ALL hyperlinks, all the glitzy transitions (every type), and the user can go forward and backward in the presentation (using the up and down arrows on keyboard). Exporting to Quicktime seems to be the missing "Keynote Viewer." Really, everything works, just like from within Keynote.
Now, you can export to Quictime in Large full-screen format, or you can choose smaller formats, even one titled web-size.
That may be your answer, as you can embed quictime movies into web pages.

I love making presentations and strangely while I'm an Apple fan the only thing I still didn't convert to is iWork
Keynote is the best presentation tool I ever saw. The problem is with playing the presentations in college or anywhere else.
I know that keynote is compatible with PowerPoint, but how far?
Will the beautiful transitions and animations on keynote work on PowerPoint? Alongside with the beautiful graphics, charts and backgrounds?

I would say the compatibility is "just good enough". If you NEED to use it you will, but you don't want to ever NEED it.
You shoud think of the compatibility as being like trying to playback high resolution, color, widescreen, Dolby stereo content on a small black and white mono tv. There are some things that old telly just won't be capable of. Sure, you can see the motion and hear something, but you're ultimately limited by what you use to PLAYBACK the content, not what you used to CREATE it.
Because Keynote has features that PowerPoint doesn't, PowerPoint will never be able to playback exactly what you see in Keynote. The reverse is true as well.

In a perfect universe all these facilities would work. In practice they are unreliable, from practical experience, completely relying on other systems out with your control is a disaster waiting to happen.
Always play safe, keep the file on your Mac, playback on your Mac and have at least one backup of all your files available.

Keynotes - compatability issues?

Hi, I hope someone can help or advice.
I am looking into possibly purchasing iWorks so that I can use Keynotes. At the moment, I use a Windows PC at work and a Mac at home. My concerns are compatability issues, so if any someone/s can answer the following questions I would be greatly appreciative:
If I produce a Keynotes presentation on my Mac, can I auto-run as a presentation on a Windows computer easily? (i.e. just run it, not edit it....etc).
Also can I link files to the presentation that can then be clicked within the slide to open in a seperate window i.e. a pdf document, and if so does this close or reduce the presentation itself?
Also I read online that Keynotes can make quite a good interactive shows that 5hit on Powerpoint as far as visuals, i.e. I need to produce an interactive CD,that will autorun on any pc/mac without issue and run a show that lists documents in pdf format that the viewer can click to view without the presentation disappearing, i.e. presenation still remains an active window behind, can this be done in keynotes, or does anyone know of any other mac or windows application that does this kind of thing?
Not sure if the above makes sense, sorry but it's difficult to explain.
Hope someone can help me, I am real keen to get Keynotes, but if it has issues with transferrring onto PC, then there is no point!

Keynote & PC compatability

Hi,
I wondered whether it is possible to create a presentation on Keynote and then add as a weblink to a website. Will there be compatibility issues with PC users?
If so, is there any way around this??

Keynote documents can't be read on a PC unless saved or exported in a PC compatible format.

Keynote compatibility w/Powerpoint

My daughter is supposed to do a Powerpoint presentation for her A&P class and burn it to a cd. If she does her presentation on Keynote for Mac will her prof be able to access it through his Powerpoint?

Have you checked Microsoft's website to ensure that you're supplying the right file format?
Also, if there is a requirement that Windows users of PowerPoint open files with no problems, then you're doing yourself a disservice by not buying PowerPoint. Keynote is an excellent tool and when giving a presentation it still beats PowerPoint handily. However, Keynote isn't and will likely never be a replacement for PowerPoint.
There are other free tools that DO aspire to be carbon copy clones of PowerPoint, though, you may want to check those out.

Keynote/Powerpoint compatibility issues

My professor has her lectures available for us online in .ppt format but when I open them with keynote large gaps of the information are completely missing. Is there a way I can fix this?

when ever i go into the build menu i have these effects grayed out and a warning that states these effects can not work on my computer....any suggestions?, i am having trouble with my 3d Charts as well, when ever i click on a 3d chart the program crashes....HELP?

No backward compatibility on keynote 6.0, where do i find the old version?

All my presentations on 5.x are now messed up (somewhat). Is there a way to get the old version without having to pay for it again?

Thanks. This was helpful. I had looked for the old app but now I found it in the iWork09 folder.... The new app was not in that folder...obviously. It is upsetting that the pop up that invites me to upgrade touts the wonderful new app but does not say that it's not backwards compatible.
You said that documents that I "opened" in the new version cant be used by the old version. You meant "created"? You are not saying that if I opened an old keynote in the new version, I can't read it with the old version except if I export it?

why isn't the new Keynote compatible with previous versions? I have a new Keynote on my iPad mini, and don't want to install the new version my MacBook

There have always been some issues with iPad and Mac Keynote files; fonts, transitions, builds and themes must have equivalents on each platform.

Keynote compatibility issues between iOS and OSX versions

Please help! I have been using iOS version of Keynote for creating and presenting on my iPad for the last 12 months and it has worked really well. I recently purchased a Mac and installed Keynote and opened some of my recent presentations on it using iCloud. I was able to use the better functionality on the OSX version then save it and open on the iPad to present. Yesterday, however I opened my main presentation on the iPad and I got a screen saying "this presentation may look different on your iOS device than on your Mac. To preserve the original, tap open copy". I opened the copy version and the entire presentation was greyed out with all the images gone. I opened it on the Mac and it was also greyed out so I am unable to open it on any device now. The original is still there (thank God!) but I cannot find a way to open it at all. Tom Gewecke is correct, "...It's not available on your Mac except via downloading with a browser...".
If you have an iCloud account log into your iCloud account choose iWork icon on the far right.
On your computer choose which files to upload. Choose which file type you want to upload then choose the appropriate tab, Keynote, Numbers, Pages. Upload your files to the appropriate tab.
There is a gear in the upper right click it choose Upload Document.
From iCloud you will not be able to work on the file, however if you have the iOS device with Keynote, Numbers, Pages, installed you will be able to work on them with your iOS device.
If you are running Lion then changes made to that file from your computer, or iOS device will be synced to iCloud, your iOS device, and your computer. That keeps your iWork documents synced.

Version compatibility of keynote

When I tried to open a keynote file which is made with keynone 3 on keynote 2.02, it complained as "This version of Keynote can't open this document, The document was created with a later version of Keynote.", so that I couldn't open it. Is there a update which enables keynote 2 to read keynote 3 files?

Earlier versions of Keynote cannot open later files
1 can't open 2,
2 can't open 3
However, later versions CAN open earlier version files (though there may be some parts that need to be touched up)
2 can open 1
3 can open 1 AND 2

Nope, not at all. If you're doing it with Keynote 3, you can only save backwards to Keynote 2 format (iWork '05).

Keynote Compatability with mac and pc

i made a commercial add that is about 59 seconds long. it is between 62 128 mb not sure. When I exported it I used the default settibg which is the first choice when you select exportt. The problem is is that it played quick when I checked it out after I published it into iweb, but other computers I checked it out on were slow. Also If a pc user goes to view commercial it won't play unless they have quick time. My questiopn is when exporting keynote is there a way to export it smaller and freindly for mac and pc. The other opption I was wondering about is if I shoulld upload it to a service and than use the enbeded code on the iweb project. The problem is I don't wany any youtube logo or addvertisment. Is there a service that will let upload and have the video embed exactly how you created it without looking like a tv screen. I wan'e it to look like a panaramic flash video. I am also using mobile me.

If you manually manage your media, rather than automatically sync it, you can kind of do what you want.
If your two computers are both on the same network, use iTunes Home Sharing feature.

Porting Keynote for ultra-portable shows on the road

I am starting this thread to discuss questions of how to leverage Keynote and iCloud to deliver presentations while on-the-road with limited access to hardware. To wit:
As you can see from the listings below, I have access to useful hardware and software. I am writing this to seek advice on how to leverage these tools to give business (and personal) presentations while I'm on-the-road and may (or may not) be carrying hardware with me. If I'm forced to travel light, I was wondering if simply taking a thumb drive and/or using my iCloud account may be enough.
I work for a small construction business that does projects in eight surrounding counties. I work as a "Producer", which means I'm both an office manager (writing up contracts and job estimates, arranging business with customers, contractors and suppliers over-the-phone) and a project manager (working with those same business contacts in-person on remote project sites). I am also applying for work outside of our business, and want to be able to use visual aids if/when necessary to illustrate what I do during an interview.
I recently started taking a Lynda.com course on "Setting Up Your Mobile Office to Work from Anywhere", and it got me to thinking about how I could use iCloud and Apple's iWork apps to create business presentations that could be played in a variety of portable scenarios. My goal is to be able to travel light and still be able to make presentations to individuals or groups.

Scenario #1: If I prepared a Keynote presentation on my iMac and transferred it via WiFi or thumb drive to the old MacBook, do I need to copy just a single Keynote file over and that's it? No attached files or folders with files in them?
Scenario #2: I have successfully, in the past, used the Epson projector and a thumb drive loaded with photos and also a USB camera card reader with an SD card attached to show simple JPEG photo slideshows. If I wanted to just use the Epson's USB port to show Keynote slideshows, they would have to be stored in folders as JPEG files. How easy is this to prepare with Keynote? Are there any pointers available on designing a useful workflow for preparing such slideshows without a lot of fuss?
Scenario #3: Forget the projector; too much bulk. If I had just a small iOS device like an iPod touch, and I wanted to plug into someone else's projector (or if I wanted to just show a slideshow of images to one person with no projector) what do I need to be prepared for, hardware-wise? What do I need to do with Keynote, both on the iMac for production and on the iOS device to make it look right?
Scenario #4: Let's say I'm going to carry everything on a USB thumb drive as a backup. What is the best way to set it up to play on someone else's hardware? (I assume three tiers of compatibility: I do network with Mac/iOS users, so Tier #1 would be Apple compatibility with Keynote. Tier #2 would be general compatibility with Microsoft Office 2003/4 for pre-XML file formats. I guess that Tier #3 would be general-purpose PDF files, or maybe the JPEG file approach with thumb drive ports on projectors.) If I'm doing Tier #1 and I'm plugging my thumb drive into someone else's MacBook, are there any pointers to avoid font conflicts or other issues? If I'm doing Tier #1 and I'm borrowing someone else's iPad to show a slideshow, how do I get the files off of a thumb drive to show on the iPad?
Scenario #5: ** iCloud ** Let's say I'm traveling VERY light, and I want to give a presentation that's stored on my Apple iCloud account. How can I organize files and folders so that Tier #1, #2 and #3 files are available (assuming I have an internet connection) so I can play a presentation off someone else's hardware, be it a tablet or laptop. Is there anything I should know about how to prepare this and how to reliably be able to log-in and access my iCloud files? Are my iWork 2009 apps going to function in preparing and saving presentation files with my iCloud account?
Scenario #6: Scenario #6 is Scenario #5, but substituting another service instead of iCloud, like maybe Google Drive. Is there any way to set up an account with files so I can reliably be able to access said files for a presentation?

This is a great reminder. I too labor over my slides, sometimes way too much labor and not enough on the presentation. This is also a reminder to check out your venue BEFORE you arrive. Talk to the tech in charge if at all possible and tell him/her the system your bringing and ask if they can accommodate your requirements. I am giving 4 classes for adult continuing education at a local high school. I've had to bring my own flat screen TV because their projector was sub-par and did nothing for my slides.
Best practice if it is feasible and reasonable to go to the venue and check it out days before your presentation.
For the amount of work we put into our slides, we deserve for them to be shown at the best possible resolution.

Pages v5 and v4 compatibility

I just installed Pages 5.5.2 after working in Pages 4.3 for the last three years... no wonder everyone is giving 5.5 such a bad rap (refer to the number of 1-star-I-hate-it votes on the App Store).
My problem is Pages v4.X and Pages v5.X compatibility - I opened an existing file created in v5.2.X and exported the document so it can be opened in an earlier version of Pages (File > Export to > Pages '09) it did not work, when I tried to open the exported file in Pages4.3 I get the error "This document couldn't be opened" (great error message Apple, no really, it's packed with lots of information to assist me to overcome my problem!) On the other hand, I created a Pages5.5.2 document and repeated the process (File > Export to > Pages '09), and hey presto I can open the file in Pages4.3. Also, I open a file created in 4.3 in Pages5.5.2 and the formatting goes awry - facing pages defaults to single, alignments skewed, floating elements misaligned. Every page and floating element needs to be checked (some are missing).
My colleagues and I are struggling to open Pages documents created in one version and exported to be opened in another version (I refer to the error above). I'd like to hear if others are having the same problem and what they have done to rectify the issue. My preference would be to downgrade everyones version of Pages to 4.3. Is this possible? (We have OS versions which vary across the gamut 10.10 down to 10.6)

Need newer version of Numbers to open file
That applies to Pages as well as to Numbers
The trick is to drag icons for both versions to your Dock. Right click or control click on each and Options > Keep in Dock. That puts you in charge of which version you launch.
Here is a screen shot of both Pages icons on my Dock.
Pages 4.3 (Pages '09) on the left (ink bottle).
Pages 5.2.2 on the right (orange header).
Both versions will run happily together. Just be sure which version is opening your document.
Instead of double clicking the document, run whichever version of Numbers/Pages/Keynote suits and use File > Open.
