Compatible Accessories

Is there a list of compatible accessories for use with iCal? I have been looking at different PDA, phones, etc. and many say they do not sync with any other programs never mind iCal. Is there a list of third party accessories for this or any iLife applications? Where?

I've heard that some of the cases might rub against the phone, and if there is sand or grit it might scratch the phone.
I've avoided these and use a loose fitting soft case that fits on my belt.

Will using "non-compatible" accessories harm the iPhone?

So I was in a Best Buy tonight and I was picking up an awesome little Sony boombox that has a CD player and a iPod dock, so inevitably I tried to see if it would work with the iPhone and it gave me the predictable "not-compatible - do you want to turn on airplane interference..." and I chose "no" but the stereo did work with the iPhone past that error message, I could play audio and it was charging the iPhone and worked fine.
When I was buying it I mentioned to the clerk that it was for an iPhone 3G and he warned me against getting it because his iPhone had been on a "non-compatible" speaker dock for iPod and it burned out his screen and overpowered the iPhone. He claimed he took it to the Apple store and they said it was a power surge issue and the warranty would not cover it.
So...I bought the Sony stereo anyways because it has a line-in also, anyone know if there is truth to this that the "non-compatible" accessories can harm the iPhone 3G?
If they could why does the error message not explicitly say so, it just says it won't work but nothing about users could void their warranty if they try.

No, all that warning means is that you may get GSM interference from the phone (a loud an obnoxious noise through the accessories speakers). The accessory *will not* cause any physical harm to the iPhone.

Is iPod Classic compatible with existing accessories?

I was thinking of purchasing an iPod Classic but I noticed that, when you shop for accessories in the Online Apple Store, many of the accessories that are listed as compatible with the 5G Video iPod are not listed as compatible with the iPod Classic. Two accessories concern me most: my Bose SoundDock and my Sonic 55 video playback system.
Is it the same universal connector and does it handle video in the same manner (in other words, do I still have to enable TV Out on my iPod Classic and, when I do, will the video still play on the Sonic 55's larger screen like with my 5G Video iPod?)
I phoned the Apple Store and asked the rep this question, but all he did was look it up in the store like I did and then he said, "I guess it's not compatible."
I think it would be a big mistake on Apple's part if this update made existing accessories unusable.
Has anybody had any hands on with this issue?

I bought a g5 video ipod compatible Belkin Tune-Talk today (microphone) .... It doesn't work.
Virtually no accessories (accept apple-made products) function with the classic. The folks at Belkin said they were blind-sided with this release (i.e. not given any non-disclosure agreement to sign in order to develop new, compatible accessories for a simultaneous roll-out with the new Apple products). So, they are now scrambling at Belkin, as every other vendor is. It will take weeks or months before this mess is sorted out. Even the Apple store "geniuses" were flying in the dark ("yeah go ahead and buy the Tune-talk, the video ipod stuff will work with the classic"), and so was Apple tech support (some nice, but outsourced Indian-sounding fellow answered who had no idea what was going on=deer in the headlights syndrome).
MACNN.com reports that the problem rests with vendor products not being able to establish screen control over the new Apple products. I can confirm that from my own experience.
Now I have to go back to the store and return this useless accessory, which takes time off my life and lowers the joy quotient of purchasing Apple ... and all this simply because somebody in charge of the roll out never thought of informing Apple "geniuses" that accessories are broken (which could have been accomplished through a simple form lettered faxed or e-mailed to each store manager).

Ipod touch 4G with phone 3G accessories

Hi, I used to have an iphone 3G (still have the hardware, but due problems with AT&T I am not longer an iphone user). Now, I just bought an ipod touch 32GB 4G for my niece as a christmas present and I am wondering if I can give her all the accessories I have for my iphone 3G (data cable x 2, fm transmitter, car charger, alarm clock with docking station) for her to use them with her touch. I know the easier solution would be to try them out, but we don't live close to each other, and I will be shipping the ipod to her before christmas and I don't want to open her gift.
Does anybody here has try iphone 3G compatible accessories with the new ipod touch? Do they work? is there any reason why they would not? I know some people are posting older accessories not working with the newer hardware, but I remember having a similar problem going from the first iphone to the 3G forcing me to replace most of them. Not sure if these people are referring to those older accessories and not the ones that are iphone 3G compatible

Pay $29 for upgrade now have to pay for compatible scanner/camera etc

So, I just upgraded to the new Lion OS. Thought it would be a good thing. Now my scanner won't work. Come to find out that I cannot update the drivers to the new Lion OS supported drivers cause they don't exist. My Photoshop won't work either. So, basically I paid a low price for a great upgrade, but now I am going to have to pay even more to get new compatible accessories. Anyone else in this same boat?

I have a CanoScan 8400F and have it working perfectly under Lion. I'll try to explain what I did:
First you need drivers and software, go here:

Next, still in the CanoScan 8400F drivers and software, select Mac OSX 10.6 and download the following SOFTWARE:

You can open all of these images, but DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING YET.
Turn off your scanner, unplug the power (yes the power) and unplug the USB cable from the scanner.

Next install:

Open Image Capture in your applications folder - The 8400F should show up, if not; with Image Capture still open, unplug and then replug the USB cable in (scanner still turned on).
With Image Capture open and the 8400F showing, run the last program you downloaded:

You should be able to close Image Capture and open CanoScan Toolbox. Everything works, even the buttons on the scanner.
I have done this on a virgin install of Lion on an external drive, and it works there also.

Nokia Lumia compatible headsets

Since i've purchased my Lumia 1020 i'm looking to buy in-ear headset that has the capability to control volume / answer and hang up / microphone just like the apple headset.
But unfortunately in Australia no one sells Nokia compatible accessories and none of the headphones out there clams to work on windows phone.
I tried to get an answer from Nokia through twitter and had no reply.
All i want is a headset can do the features mentioned above for a reasonable price that would be great.

Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 WiFi becomes disconnected during idle or waking from sleep

I have a Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 in which the wi-fi consistently becomes disconnected when either the tablet is idle for a period of time, or if it has woken from sleep. Period of time varies -- more than 5 minutes, but less than an hour.
When wi-fi connection is lost, the only way to connect again is to reboot. Not much of a solution. USB 3.0-to-Ethernet adapter is rock-solid, but there isn't much point in having a tablet if you can't be wireless at some point.
Things I've tried:
- Optimized the intel driver settings roaming agressivenes: medium-low, Throughput booster: enabled, Transmit Power: highest.
- toggling airplane mode, disabling/enabling via Network Connections
- creating a custom wireless profile
Really, not sure what I can try next. I've used other Windows 8.1 Pro laptops, and none of them have been this spotty.
If anyone has a solution out there, I'm game to try. Otherwise, I'll be returning this back to Dell as a defective product. There seems to be issues about earlier versions of the Venue 11 Pro, but I haven't been able to find much on the 7140 version.
Fully updated Windows 8.1 Pro. Using Intel dual-band Wireless AC 7265 adapter with v17.13.11.5 of the driver. BIOS version A03.

This whole process from order date 14th March 2015 to now has been frustrating, my mistake was to get one of the sales consultants on chat to check the saved cart, had compatible accessories for this tablet. From then on, after multiple quotes in the end he still managed to get the address wrong and missed putting screen protector on the order, multiple emails and phone calls the following week finally got address changed but couldn't get screen protector added to order in the end I ordered it over the internet. I should have cancelled order when I wanted to.
What should have been a simple process is now a nightmare the Tablet with screen protector needs to be replaced has not worked properly since unboxing and first switch on , spent many hours of installing updates, contacted technical assistance last Thursday they did a remote hookup changed some things worked for a little time.

PS update 7th April 2015 started factory reinstall last Friday reinstalled all recomended updates more wasted time tested over weekend WiFi still not working after sleep mode. When I check for new updates keeps asking to reinstal theses 2 updates already done, reinstal them over and over still tells me to update them, second file fails to instal have to manually instal O2 Micro file searches wrong place for missing component.

Apple noob ipad2? - many questions, can you help?

hi, i have many, many questions. if you could answer at least a couple and let someone else answer others, i would be so grateful! thank you!
i'd like to get an ipad 2. i'm very crippled, disabled, and desperately in need of a *good* tablet. since i am very very poor, it will be nearly impossible for me to do this. first of all, is there any way for someone like me to obtain a new ipad; a contest, a charity, anything like that? i hate to ask, but i'm nearly quadriplegic and will be completely at some point. i've tried some cheap tablet pcs and they were all horrible and returned. i cannot afford the $329 for the cheapest ipad 2, so i surely cannot afford one w/ more storage. i need to know if ipads are equipped w/ removable storage, such as a micro or standard SD card. are they? i would have to get the cheapest ipad 2 which i believe has 16gb of storage. i'd want to be able to store onto an SD (or other) media or i will eventually fill up the space.
i do see that it has bluetooth. can i transfer apple files to a pc via bluetooth? is that possible since my old, old, defunct, barely functional pc is running win7? any pc i'd transfer to would be MS windows. i will always save in a windows compatible format. i just do not know if i can transfer files from apple to pc, as well as if i can transfer via bluetooth from apple to pc?
i'm concerned about having to pay for apps. i live way below the poverty line and have no friends or family to assist w/ anything - not that i would dare ask! i'm on my own and this would be a once in a lifetime purchase that would have to last me "forever". i heard an ipad user say something about the first gen ipad becoming "obsolete" and that you cannot upgrade an ipad; you have to buy a new one. is that correct? if i could get an ipad 2 (i'd *love* the retina display but cannot afford it - so just the standard ipad 2), will it be useless at some point - a few years from now?
are there many *free* apps? such as, can i install a Netflix app to watch on the tablet for free? or listen to a free radio app? or is there a cost for *every* app? forgive me, i have limited use of my neck and cannot hold my head up or use my arms much, so this post is all i can do. i cannot go searching through available apps.
bc of my physical disabilities, i am desperately in need of something extremely lightweight that will last me a very long time. in addition to the cost of apps, are there any other operating costs, other than my internet service, for which i need to be aware of before diving into All Things Apple?
if there are any charities or foundations that assist people, disabled or not, in obtaining an ipad 2, please give me link(s) and/or info. due to my disablities and financial situation, a very good tablet is my only option. i cannot sit up vertically at all sometimes, or if i can, for only a limited time. i cannot turn my head to view a monitor. ergo, i need something that can be used in a very reclined position. that rules out everything but tablets.
i *think* that SIRI would be a good way to do things via voice recognition. i'm not sure of "her" capabilities, however. is there voice recognition accessibility built into iOS? i cannot always use my arms, so i need to be able to speak to do communications. some of my doctors *only* communicate via their secure email service. they will not accept calls to the nurses at all. this is a huge problem for someone that cannot look at the screen due to its position, or type the email. i really need voice recognition so i can communicate! if it's not built into iOS, is it an app? what price?
i would also need the smart cover and a keyboard. i have to have the stand, as i am unable to hold the ipad up - remember that i am in a reclined position at all times. i would likely put the ipad w/ the cover as a stand on my knees (bent and upward), and then need a keyboard on my abdomen. are the keyboards wired or wireless? if wired, how long is the cord? i would need about 2.5-3' in length to do this.
i have an HDTV that was a gift (THANKS!). does the ipad 2 come w/ a standard HDMI or other connection cord to connect directly to the tv? or does one need to purchase "apple tv" or some other type unit to view and use on the tv screen? (in which case, a keyboard w/ cord would not work, would a wireless keyboard work about 8-10' away?).
if my old printer works, i will have to connect it to the old pc - running windows. will i still be able to print w/ airprint, even tho the printer is connected to a windows pc? very much need ability to print, especially for medical and financial concerns. do not have wifi printer and cannot afford one. will it work?
can i use my google account and its settings - will apple sync w/ chrome?
how much is the warranty and for how long may i purchase it for? I would want the longest one. i was able to see that it said you can make 2 warranty claims. is this correct?
can i upgrade iOS? is there a charge for it, as in windows? can i use other programs such as photoscape (freeware vr of photoshop) or another browser (such as dolphin)?
does it have GPS? may i use it at no charge? i'm homebound, so this is not a big issue, but if i survive the many major surgeries, i *hope* i can get out again!
i really need some help. i cannot communicate with people! i'm new to apple and do not know anything about these things. please forgive me for the very lengthy post and so many questions. any and all information would be quite helpful! please remember that i *cannot* go searching around sites to find this information. this post alone has taken over 2 days to write.

thank you so much IIP glad to hear someone vouch for a refurb. youre right, i cannot afford anything apple. i was hoping to find a foundation that helps disabled ppl that need to communicate. i really REALLY need to know if there's voice recognition in the iOS, or even a good free app.... idk. as you said, i looked at refurbs and even the same model as the cheapest new ipad 2 was $400. :/ only diff i could see *i think* was that it was wifi and cellular - and i only need wifi. perhaps the reason the refurb was as much as the new w/ only wifi?
prob w/ laptop pc - cannot use arms much, esp to pick up a laptop, and cannot carry one around. even an ultrabook (which is a trademark) or other light weight is over 3lbs and i cannot do that. i can barely do 8oz (for a drink). ergo laptops are out. ultras / light weights are way too expensive. they also come w/ friggin win8. the starting range of those are much higher than the starting range of ipad.
i guess i'll have to look into a samsung galaxy 2 tablet, android, upgradeable, if i cannot find a way to get the ipad. advantage of tablet pc over apple / ipad is big time w/ warranty. so that is my 2nd choice, since the price just went down tonite actually at my WM. (no lectures! i have to buy there, cannot afford local biz's!)
i'm using a laptop now, old one, borrowed, win xp. i cannot move it at all. it's soooo heavy! i've not weighed it but would not be surprised if over 5lbs. ergo my posts take forever to write and it's very hard for me as i cannot be in a reclining position to use it. due to my spinal diseases, it's complicated. i have to move around at least every 20-30min while awake, or 45-60min while trying to sleep. not to be confused w/ mobility or ability to hold head upright/ at all, or use of arms. spinal disease is entire spine now. just found out that peachy news recently.
so you see a laptop wont work. i've spent months and months trying to find a laptop that i *could* use. not possible.
pro's of tablet pc: less than 1/2 the price, and no q's asked, no charge, 2-3 yr drop/spill/anything accident or manufacturing defect. will get one w/ android, upgradeable. tons of free apps.
cons: much less performance, and nothing near the quality of ipad in any way. even the cases are not as durable as ipad. wont get anything w/ windows on it, so have to make sure it's an android. many android models *do not* have VR (voice recognition) installed. hard to find *free* *good* VR app. have to use mSD card. hard for someone w/ very limited use of arms and would have to mess around w/ that little tiny thing w/ messed up dexterity.
pro's of ipad: DURABLE, still unclear how long it'll last as far as upgrading iOS and available apps. great OS and software/apps. compatible in many ways w/ pc. *better* features in all ways than tab pc.
cons: no idea if disability accessibility w/ VR installed or free app that is *free* and *good*. price more than 2x as much as decent tablet pc. warranty is crap. i cannot afford it and it's only 1 yr and doesnt cover accidents. have to buy more expensive compatible accessories like case/cover/kb.
either way, i have to find help for purchase of either kind and accessories and prob good VR software/app. at some point, i will be 100% quadriplegic and unable to communicate - that's an absolutey firm prognosis. at this time i am 80% incapicated - meaning 80% of a 24hr period i am completely incapcitated. i wanted to get VR set up on pc, but cannot sit, even in recliner, and look at monitor due to position of body and therefore having to turn head, hold weight of head on neck, and entire spine issues. so i was going to set it up, as i thought i had no choice (which i wont have likely sooner than expected), and then i got laryngitis and had *no* voice at all for 35 - THIRTY FIVE!! - days! been ~2+ mo now and it still goes out. crazy! advice: if you lose your voice, SHUT UP or you'll never get it back. i'm not kidding!
so things arent working out well at all for awhile. *shrugs* such is life.

thank you IIP! tablet pc is back in my options. that choice was just made a few hours ago when my "servant" (lol, my bff, he's so sweet!) came by and went shopping for me so i could get some food! yummy! there are too many cons to tablet pc, but it appears, at this point, that it's going to be my only choice.

Worst experience yet and it's only getting worse...

2 weeks ago I dropped my beautiful smart phone and the screen died. Being the honest person I am I told them I dropped it and I knew I would have to get a new one. I thought my early upgrade was in November but was told no it was February. If it was Nov. I was just going to wait and use an old blackberry for a month to get by. That's fine I said, and then we started going into details... My new in two plan doesn't really get me a new phone every two years... It get me $50 off. Which according to the math of the sales rep is $50 off of $200 equals $100... WHAT?! Not complaining I like your math but really... Then she tells me that I can order a phone online and get $50 off for shopping online. Okay. I figure I can shop around, not have to deal with a mathmatical idiot, I'll get the discount plus my corporate discount. NOT SO!! Yes I got the $50 off for whatever reason, but I did not get my corp discount. During checkout it tells me that my New every 2 plan is no longer avail with my plan. Whatever, I am thinking at this point. I check out and call V. They discontinued that plan, NOT THAT I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A NEW PHONE IN FEBRUARY ANYWAYS!!! Considering it's only actually $50 off. So okay whatever moving forward. Get the phone and then realized 15 days (key dates here) after I ordered thru verizon, that I could get the same dang phone for FREEEEEEE with a different corp partner Wirefly. I call V and they very nicely give me the phone for $35 (restocking fee if I would have returned it), because I have paid my bill on time and even though I have only had the phone for 12 days... I ordered it 15 days ago and was therefore outside of their 14 happy period or whatever they call it. HAPPY moment, for a minute I was grateful for V saving me the time and hassle all because I am an upstanding cit and PAY MY BILLS on time.

So I start shopping on the VW store. After some confusion and having to dig pretty deep to find COMPATIBLE accessories. I find a car Window Mount and a new Docking station. This is where I get SUPER PISSY! Online the Mount is coming up as free, the dock shows as 29 with my discount and I am getting free 2 day shipping. Yippee! However after I enter in my credit card number and confirm shipping address it will not go thru. Not a payment issue, something wrong with the site issue. So I call V, #1 Cx Svc chick very nice, but can't help get transfered, #2 cx svc dude nice but wants to charge me $80 and doesn't even find the dock that I found, transferred cx svc chick #3 nice, told her I am getting pissy, she can't help, transferred cx svc #4 chick... She finds the correct parts, she don't know why the mount shows up as free. I tell her I can send her a .pdf of the order or a screen shot whatever... She says she can't help me. She doesn't know why it's doing that but they can't match the price. REALLY!!! F'IN WALMART WILL MATCH A PRICE!!! It's advertised for a certain price, I have a .pdf of the freakin order with the price, but you can't give me the price... **bleep**!!!

the corp discount is negotiated with each corporation. it rarely applies to discounted devices

So I start shopping on the VW store. After some confusion and having to dig pretty deep to find COMPATIBLE accessories. I find a car Window Mount and a new Docking station. This is where I get SUPER PISSY! Online the Mount is coming up as free, the dock shows as 29 with my discount and I am getting free 2 day shipping. Yippee! However after I enter in my credit card number and confirm shipping address it will not go thru. Not a payment issue, something wrong with the site issue. So I call V, #1 Cx Svc chick very nice, but can't help get transfered, #2 cx svc dude nice but wants to charge me $80 and doesn't even find the dock that I found, transferred cx svc chick #3 nice, told her I am getting pissy, she can't help, transferred cx svc #4 chick... She finds the correct parts, she don't know why the mount shows up as free. I tell her I can send her a .pdf of the order or a screen shot whatever... She says she can't help me. She doesn't know why it's doing that but they can't match the price. REALLY!!! F'IN WALMART WILL MATCH A PRICE!!! It's advertised for a certain price, I have a .pdf of the freakin order with the price, but you can't give me the price... **bleep**!!! take the pdf in store and see what happens, the online system has had issues since the iphone launch, the ifolk broke it

Hooking up Iphone to TV

I was hoping someone could help me out with this problem I have been having lately. For the longest time I would download TV shows or Movies onto my iphone and then hook up my phone to the TV and watch them through my TV. Then just one day out of no where it stopped working.
Everytime I plug the cables into the phone and TV it says that this device is not meant to work with the Iphone and if I would like to turn on Airplane mode.
It does that everytime and I have not been able to watch anything anymore. Does anyone know what the problem may be? I don't think I have changed any settings. Im thinking about maybe buying new cables for it and see it that might be the problem.
Any advice would be greatful.

Suggestion on a good external drive for imac

I just got to the point of having no memory space. I am looking for the best approach to picking a solid, cost efficient external hard drive. Any suggestion on where to get or possible prices.

Robert and BDAqua gave some links to OtherWorldComputing (OWC) a reputable vendor of Mac-compatible accessories and upgrades. I don't represent them, just another satisfied customer over the years.
I think FW drives are in general better performance than USB drives, but there are many variables like how many other devices you have connected, etc... I think most folks would recommend FW drives over USB.
Your model info still doesn't quite narrow down the potential list enough to know if you have FW 400 or FW 800 ports, I think it depends on the display size, only the 24" had the FW800, I'm not really sure.
In your Apple Menu Bar, select the About This Mac, then in the little window that pops up, click the More info button. This will launch System Profiler. You will see a window with lots of info about your computer hardware, click on the FireWire triangle and see the info displayed about the Maximum Speed of the channel.
So for example if you have FW 400, this means the max theoretical speed is 400Mb/sec, if you have FW 800 then your max speed is 800Mb/sec. Neither of which you will probably ever attain this quoted Max speed, but why spend more on a FW800 drive if you only have FW400 ports on that iMac, unless maybe you plan to use it with a future machine.
You definitely need to free up space on your primary internal disk, free space is needed for temporary files and virtual memory as you use your computer, it can lock up if you lack sufficient free space.

What Graphics card is the best choice?

Still Aperture stalls and sputters. Its not a smooth experience.
Currently I rather D-tour through Canon Photo Professional to convert my RAW's to JPEG's and organize them in iPhoto than put them in Aperture (2.1.2) in a managed library.
Will a new Graphics card make the difference?
Currently I am using the stock NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256MB ram.
And its just no fun.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I don't get it why there is so little to be found about the importance of a good graphics card for Aperture.
Meantime I have read good things about the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT witch is the official Apple recommended product.
For now I will wait with the purchase of a new Graphics card and wait a few more weeks to see what Apple will announce at Macworld. Since I really like the new 24" cinema display that's currently only compatible with the Unibody Macbook and MB Pro's. I hope that Apple will finally renew their line of display's. And if they are going push the mini display port I will also expect new graphic cards...
Oh boy' this makes me think about my investment in Firewire compatible accessories...
