Compatible Digital Voice Recorders

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a digital voice recorder to record lectures mostly. I need to transfer these files to my Mac, but I can't seem to find any recorders that are compatible with Macs. I have an RCA one which is good but I have to use my mom's PC to transfer the files which are in .VOC format, convert them to .WAV, then transfer to iTunes and create AAC versions. This all too much just to hear my recordings.
Anybody know of any digital voice recorders that transfer painlessly to Mac for about $50 max? Any help is much appreciated.

So you are wanting to do this through your iPod correct? Well, finding the right digital recorder does depend on what iPod model own. Just make sure when shopping around to verify that its compatible before purchasing.

Mac compatible Digital voice recorder

I'm looking to buy a Mac compatible Digital voice recorder for interviews (I'm a journalist). Needs are one that is easy and basic, where I don't need to download any software if possible. I'm going to be doing lengthy interviews and need something that can stand up to travel & length of time (about 2-3 hrs per interview). Thanks for an input. Apple store couldn't help.... thanks!

For a high quality portable audio recorder, I've been very happy with the Olympus LS-10, but it is more expensive that the ordinary voice recorder, on the order of $250USD. If you want quality, this has it. I am disappointed at the sound quality of the voice recorders I have tried. It's stereo, about the size of a pack of cigarettes (if anybody remembers that). The built-in microphones are not perfect for music (reduced bass and boosted highs), but are excellent for voice. The device records about 10 hours continuously on 2 AA batteries. It has tiny speakers and earphone jack, and an iPod-easy menu system. It requires no software to transfer files. You connect the USB cable to the Mac, and the recorder shows up on the desktop for you to move whatever files you wish. You can record in WAV, MP3 or WMA formats at several bit depths and sample rates to balance quality with file size.
There are many competing products (Sony, Tascam, Marantz, others) that have some similar characteristics, but I have no experience with them - except some Zoom products I tried were poor.

The Olympus DS series of Digital Voice Recorders work with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
I recently researched this question for another person who already had an Olympus DS and was looking for Tiger-compatibility information. I learned the following by making direct contact with Olympus technical support personnel.
The Olympus DS series voice recorders ship with an application called DSS Player which is used to access, download, and convert files from the recorder to your Mac.
The short answer is that if you install the DSS Player application that comes with their digital voice recorders, and then install the "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) V6 Update to V6.0.4" — which can be found using their Support - Downloads Web page — then the DSS Player software will work with Tiger.
They are planning to update their Web site to reflect this as well as provide a FAQ. The basic instructions are the following:
• If your Olympus digital voice recorder comes with DSS Player V6, you simply install "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) V6 Update to V6.0.4" using the instructions in the Read Me file.
• If your Olympus digital voice recored comes with DSS Player versiion 1.xx, you first install the "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) Upgrade from version 1.xx to V6" using the instructions in the Read Me file, then install "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) V6 Update to V6.0.4," again following the instructions in its Read Me file.

To go from speech-to-text, which I presume is your main use as an author, one would also need to install software for speech-to-text conversion. According to the documentation I've read on DSS Player, the software will work with IBM ViaVoice. Another option is to use iListen™ from MacSpeech. According to this old technical note re: iListen, you'd use DSS Player to convert the .dss audio file to an .aiff file for use with iListen.
Given the choice of ViaVoice or iListen, I'd go with iListen: it's compatible with Tiger and is a supported product. Development on the ViaVoice product may have ceased since Nuance acquired the distribution rights. IBM sold the worldwide distribution rights for its ViaVoice product to Nuance (nee ScanSoft) in April 2003. While ViaVoice works under Tiger, Nuance notes some issues in this support document on their site.
Therefore, iListen would be my choice for speech-to-text.

Digital Voice Recorders

Hey everyone. As a freshman college student, I was looking into purchasing a digital voice recorder to record all of my lectures for reference. I haven't been able to find any digital voice recorder that specifically says "Mac compatible". I was wondering if anyone here might be able to suggest one, or know if any can act like a flash drive perhaps where the file would save on a flash drive in the recorder and be able to plug into any computer without software. Thank you all for your help!

I'd rather not make specific recommendations, since I use none of this gear.
As for finding this gear on the innertubes, web searches for variations of the following can be used:
"voice recorder" "mac os x"
"digital voice recorder" "mac os x"
Again, USB and MP3 and the ability to transfer files without requiring host software (for Windows) is a pretty good indicator the widget will probably work with Mac OS X. Or wander over to your local BigBox store with your laptop, and try a few of the display models and/or ask questions.

Mac compatible - Digital Voice Recorder Advice

There's many portable recorders on the market now but I've yet to find something better than Sony's products if you're looking for quality.

Zoom are interesting but the build quality is always on the cheap side.

I am looking for a voice recorder to speak into - for writing a book. Olympus' website offers a few, compatible with OS X to 10.3.

I found your question interesting, so I did some research. I eventually wound up speaking to a technical support person who works for Olympus. Normally, questions like this should be addressed directly with the vendor.

Detailed manual for the Digital Voice Recorder ICD-PX333?

I've found great detailed instruction manuals on line for older Digital Voice Recorders but not for this one.....
I've found a site that makes me search for a word to learn what I want, but I like it the way it was earlier; arranged by chapters and or topics; quite often well over 100 pages at times, depending on the model.
Where is it for the ICD-PX333?

Here's a no-brainer: Use the manual for the ICD-PX312--as far as I can see, it is the identical unit, with the -333 having 4 gigs memory built in, while the -312 has (only) 2 Gigs.

Once again, great machine. I cemented a plastic block to the battery door with a 1/4" tapped hole--this way I can use it on a stand/clamp/tripod...

Olympus Digital Voice Recorder (VN960PC)

I have an Olympus Digital Voice Recorder (VN960PC). On the Olympus site they have no Mac OSX software [though they do have it for the Dark Side] that will allow me to download the audio files onto my mac mini [PPC].
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there any software that might enable me to do this outside of going to Boot Camp or Virtual PC?

1. With the particular digital voice recorder you have, I suspect you are going to be out of luck. Olympus offers DSS Player for Mac OS X for their higher-end units, i.e. their DS-series digital voice recorders.
2. I presume you've tried connecting the VN-960PC to your Mac via USB cable and found that its built-in storage does not mount on the desktop. True?
3. I suspect DSS Player is not going to work with your VN-960PC, but if you hada DS-series recorder, here's how I'd advise you, based on having previously researched this question for a person with a DS-series player:The short answer is that if you install the DSS Player application that comes with their digital voice recorders, and then install the "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) V6 Update to V6.0.4" — which can be found using their Support - Downloads Web page — then the DSS Player software will work with Tiger.

There are some other, open-source projects for getting Windows to run under Mac OS X, but Virtual PC is probably the "gold standard" in that arena.
If your 20-inch iMac is Intel-based, in lieu of Boot Camp you could also try Parallels Desktop for Mac. This leverages the virtualization technology of the Intel chips, permitting you to run Mac OS X and Windows simultaneously.

Mac-compatible digital recorders?

Hello all,
I"m a college student going back to school in a few days, and I'm looking for a digital voice recorder that will let me record lectures and then play them on my Mac, preferably in iTunes.
I've seen a bunch of different recorders on the internet but none seem to be Mac-compatible. Some of the Olympus recorders claim to be compatible, but customer reviews say that they don't get all the computer-based features that the company promises. Additionally, I've seen recorders that attach to iPods, but I'd prefer to not carry my iPod to every class. Has anyone found a digital recorder that ACTUALLY works well with their Mac?
I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance!

I know Olympus makes one as some of our employees use them but the model number escapes me at the moment. Visit their website and you'll probably find them.

Digital audio recorders

Are there any digital audio recorders that are compatible with iTunes for Windows? (No, I don't want to stick an accessory on my iPod.)
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The one I have records to unprotected WMA files and those drag / drop in fine to iTunes — though I do tend to use the application that came with it to convert them to WAV first and then drag them into iTunes. Most audio recorders should do something similar.
Mine is a Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder and I've been happy enough with it. If you're looking to do a podcast on the road, it's been good enough for that — though I bought a good mike to go with it.

Are there iMac-compatable voice recorders?

I'm looking for a portable digital voice recorder to record meetings, interviews, etc. The only ones I can find are only Windows-compatable. Does anyone make one for the iMac?
Please excuse me if I posted this in the wrong place...my iMac is the computer that I would download the files to (as MP3 files?), so I thought this would be the most appropriate forum.
Anyone have any experience/ideas/suggestions?

Paul, I just ordered an Olympus DS-2200 YESTERDAY, after months of research, to be used in interviews with corporate executive to help me writing speeches, as well as for some casual dictation. I had some specific needs (fast and slow playback), substantial recording time, and the ability to send files to transcribers and clients in standard formats who are in the Windows world. Also, the form factor (small and lightweight) was important to me.
I discovered a few things that might be useful to you:
1. Olympus is the only major-brand digital recorder that is Mac compatable (and none yet for Tiger). However, not all their recorders work with Macs. You have to read the specs carefully.
2. Olympus has a regular line and a "pro" line. The difference primarily is one of removable media (a photo-memory card) in the pro line, and additional features (number of folders, etc.). That's what I decided upon, even though it was a little more expensive than the consumer model.
3. Olympus has a wide range of Mac-compatible models, at various prices, depending on recording time and features. Olympus has a pretty good Web site for comparision, but I found it kind of confusing with all the choices.
4. I was unable to find a retailer in LA carrying either the full line of recorders, or with any knowlegeable sales people. (Don't get me started on this.) I really wanted to see them in person, but after a while, I gave up.
5. After six months of research (and frustration), I ordered mine from novuscript.com, a company that specializes in transcription management, rather than just an electronics retailer. Brett, the president of novuscript, was incredibly helpful on the phone, and his prices were very competitive. He says that the DS-2200 is the most popular model with his writer customers, and after downloading all the manuals, brochures, etc., on different models, I came to agree with him.
6. My recorder will arrive next week; I will post a follow-up on my experience with it when I get it set up and working.

Digital Voice Recorder for MAC?

I recently switched from PC to MAC and am very happy I did.
I just have 1 thing that still need to use my PC for - I use a digital recorder almost daily, and then email the recordings to different people.
I use a Sony so I can't use it on my MAC.
I am looking for a digital voice recorder that is as easy to use as my current one, I just plug it into my PC, open the software it came with, and it converts it to MP3 and then I attach it to the specified email and away it goes.
I tried an Olympus but the effort it would have taken to convert it to MP3 was ridiculous.
I would love some suggestions...

I use an older Olympus myself, rather similar to this one, and though it records in WAV format rather than mp3 it is really pretty simple converting the files if you wish. The ones that Dave Sawyer links to look better for your purposes , though.
Sony make Mac compatible recorders which record directly into mp3 these days, too, though. See here, for example. Or this one.
eww's suggestion looks good , too.
There are a lot of choices out there. The best selection depends on what quality level you require for the recording, how important small size is, whether you will be using external mics, how much storage capacity you need, how much you are prepard to spend, etc etc. Might be easier to refine recommendations if you could provide a bit more info about such things.
