Compatible Disc Burning Device for iMac (DV)

I have an iMac (DV) with 512MB SDRAM and 400MHZ Power PC G3 Processor. I am running OS X (10.4.3). Can anyone recommend a compatible disc burning device?

Hello There, I have an old indigo iMac (the same specs as yours) I bought it secondhand a few years ago and it came with an USB iomega zipCD 650 burner which works perfectly with OS 9 and OS X. I have recently bought a firewire Pikaone DVD +/-RW which was just plug and play (no hassle) - as you need a firewire device to enable you to actually boot from an external CD/DVD player. Hope this helps, I'm sure there are lots of devices out there that are suitable but I can't afford new swish equipment and just but secondhand from eBay, so far I've been very lucky.

  • Project Backup Help! No disc burning device found?

Hello, I have a iBook G4 with a SuperDrive and Iam trying to backup a iMovie project. The version of iMovie is 6.0.2. The problem is that iMovie for some reason is not realizing that the SuperDrive is there. I go to File>Burn Project to Disc..., and I get "No disc burning device found, if you have an apple supported drive check your connections." I know it is an apple supported drive because it works with all other iLife programs-including iDVD. I find this annoying especially since I need the project backed up to put on another mac. The drive I have supports DVD-R(RW) & DVD+R(RW). I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance!

    Hi-
Forrest, you're absolutley right about Tiger and DVD support, but, Patchburn will more fully allow utilization of the optical drives abilities, and provide better media support (broader compatibility).

  • Is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for iMac

is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for my imac?

You can simply google for that; I'm sure there'll be plenty - just make sure it specifically states that it is compatible with Mac and the OS version you are running. I've had a LaCie for a number of years; it is self powered with FW port (they no longer make this one unfortunately); here is their non-Bluray option they have now:

(Personally, I prefer self powered instead of bus powered). They also sell Bluray burners.

  • Compatible external hard drives for iMac running 10.2.8

Greetings. This is my first post. My iMac is 7 years old, has 256 MB of memory, and runs on 10.2.8. It has gotten very slow. Perhaps, if I transfer the music (iTunes) and picture (iPhoto) files to an external hard drive, the operating speed may improve. However, the hard drives at the Apple store are compatible with 10.4. The salesperson said it would work. However, I am skeptical. I do not want to spend $150 or more, find out it doesn't work and cannot locate the same sales rep to get my money back. Any suggestions on what to do?

    redbar1, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Get one like this from a Mac supplier.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/usb/eliteclassic
Get the one for a firewire 400 & USB connection. The FW400 connection will be much faster than USB 1.1. Any size hard drive can be used. Suggest you get one larger than your current hard drive & then backup your entire internal hard drive.

  • HDMI capture devices for IMac

I noticed that blackmagic design are moving on to less expensive USB 3.0 in their HD video capture devices so I did a bit of lookin around to see weather the Imac or mac book pro could somehow be outfitted with usb 3.0 connections. It turns out that the mac book pro will work with a usb 3.0 card. Unfortunately though, black magic still does not doesn't show any signs of addressing support issues for apple and the usb 3.0 device compatibility issue. Does anyone know which way apple is leaning on the whole usb 3.0 thing. I'm pretty sure it offers exceptional increases in speed over even fw800. Or at least the potential for those increases as a matter of spec. And why not jump on the blueray-r while were at it.

No, there is not. HDMI options on capture cards didn't arrive until after MacPros were released and G5s were discontinued. The only capture cards that work on G5's do not offer HDMI inputs. The Intensity series are PCIe only...AJA Kona line with HDMI are PCIe only....Matrox MXO2 line are PCIe and Express34 only. And your G5 has PCI-X slots.
The AJA Kona 2, Kona LH, Decklink HD cards...things you can only find second hand...do not offer HDMI inputs. You are on a machine that was discontinued 4 years ago, HDMI support was not invented yet.

  • Max burning speed for iMac drive?

Internal SuperDrive is MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875
    Should I burn at 8x or 16x?
    Alexa

    Hi
In iDVD up to version 6 You can't set burn speed.
    In iDVD08 and 09 - You can
If You use Roxio Toast™ - You can
Apple Disk Util tool - You can set here too
If You don't select iDVD sets speed acordingly to DVD disk eg x16
As faster - as many write errors
I use x1 when able to select
On older iDVD I use DVD x2 disks.
    I would
    • Use iDVD to do a DiskImage
    • Use Disk Util tool or Toast™ to make the burn at x1 speed
Using iDVD 4 - then You need a Hack to make it able to do the DiskImage

  • My iMac does not recognize its own disc burner.  What should I do?

I've had trouble in the past with the disc not ejecting, so I am leery of giving the drive anything to swallow that it does not ask for.  I usually tell iTunes to burn a disc and the wait for it to tell me to insert a blank disc.  But now when I go to burn a disc in iTunes (get into the playlist I want, select the proper command from the File menu, and then make the settings in the window that comes up to be the way I want them, instead of prompting me to insert a blank disc, it tells me that no disc burner or software can be found.  And system profiler reports that "no disc burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it’s connected and turned on."  I burned a disc without a problem earlier today.  Do you think that was my last one?

I will try that if it happens again.  What I did, after restarting a couple of times and finding that the problem persisted, was open terminal and type "drutil poll" (and a couple of other "drutil" commands--but "poll" seemed to be the one that was doing something--if you just type "drutil" you will find a list of possibilities and their descriptions).  Then I restarted, and it worked fine.

  • Installed 10.3, Now no Disc Burner Software

    Hello all,
I reformatted my entire drive due to several issues with my PowerBook G4. I installed 10.3 from scratch and no longer have OS 9 in my startup disc. I have upgraded to 10.3.9. Whevever I put in a CD, it just kicks it back out. Even brand new software discs. When it does stay in the drive, it is not recognized by the PowerBook. I also noticed that I no longer have the Disc Burner software on my Mac. Any thoughts on how I can reinstall Disc Burner? All the online help has the Disc Burner software for OS9 only which will not install since there is no OS9 folder. I am guessing this is the reason the disc gets spit out everytime. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Peter,
disc burner is not part of MacOS X. Burning capability is built into the system, no seperate application needed.
Furthermore: your problem is not the burning capability but the recognition of the optical media. I suggest you first run the Apple hardware test and the reapply the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9.
Do not forget: Repair permissions before and after an update!

  • Why Won't Apple Announce Fix for 'No disc burner...'

Odd that Apple won't post publicly what "Jeff" from iTunes support says is official fix for this error - downloading and installing 8.1.1. Anybody had problems with 8.1.1? Transcript of my discussions with iTunes support is below for your reading pleasure:

    Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store. I understand that you are seeking "official" word from Apple. Now because the information given to me is directly from Apple, you can consider the resolution official. You can rest assured that the issue has been resolved with the release of iTunes 8.1.1.
I hope this clarifies your concerns, Rich. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, and I hope you have a great weekend.

    Jeff:
Sorry. I guess I wasn't clear. I was asking for a link to this official news from Apple. If it is official, it seems like Apple should declare that publicly. My guess is that they probably have, but I can't find it.
Since I already have installed, removed and reinstalled the prior version so many times, I just want to see something from Apple first. Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store. Well I have great news for you today! Our engineers have released the official news that the issue you have been experiencing with CD burning has been resolved in iTunes 8.1.1. This being said, please install iTunes 8.1.1, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
Furthermore, I have issued an additional five song credits to your "[email protected]" iTunes Store account, for the inconvenience and your tremendous amount of patience and understanding. You can use these to buy the individual songs of your choice from the iTunes Store.
When you next sign in with this account, the song credits will appear by your account name (in the upper-right section of the iTunes Store). The next individual song you buy from the iTunes Store will use one of your song credits instead of your primary form of payment (until all credits have been used or have expired). Please note that song credits cannot be used for purchasing songs that are listed as "Album Only."
If you don't see your credits, refresh your account information by signing out and back in to the iTunes Store. You can find both "Sign Out" and "Sign In" within the pull-down "Store" menu. If you don't see this menu, you should need only download the latest version of iTunes from our website for free:

If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know and I would be more than happy to address them for you. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, Phil, and I hope you have a great day.

Thanks, but I am going to wait until Apple tells me it has discovered a solution to this problem caused by the previous version of iTunes. As you say, you have engineers working very hard on this now, so I am hoping this will not be much longer.

    Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store. Wow, very sorry for the "Marlene" mixup, it's been a long day! In response to your question, our engineers have not released an official fix at this point. However, I don't like to see customer's unable to utilize the application to its full potential, and therefore I wanted to provide you with every last bit of information that may prove helpful.
I am not promising that upgrading to 8.1.1 will work, however some customer's have been able to resolve this issue by doing so, and therefore I felt I should pass the information along to you.
Once again, I apologize for the mixup Rich. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know and I would be more than happy to address them for you. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, and I hope you have a great day.

    Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store again! Now although this issue has not officially been resolved yet, I have some new information which may help. It appears that some customer's have been able to resolve this CD burning issue by downloading and installing the new release of iTunes 8.1.1. It can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
I would like to ask that you try downloading this new software, and then responding to this email to let me know how you make out! You may also be automatically prompted to upgrade to iTunes 8.1.1 when you open the iTunes Application, which will lead you through the same process.
I have retained your request to ensure that I receive your reply and can make sure this gets resolved for you, Marlene. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, and I hope you have a great day.

    Jeff:
Thanks, but as you might imagine, I am reluctant to download another version of iTunes when the last one led to these problems. My CD-DVD burner doesn't work properly since the last download. In fact, I had just imported some old 8mm videos of the family, and was going to burn those to a DVD for my father-in-law's birthday. Couldn't get it working, though. It's too bad, because I had been considering replacing my five year old PC with an iMac. However, I could get this kind of functionality with Microsoft.

    Dear Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store. Please note that you still have full access to your purchased music, and can still transfer your purchases to an iPod if you have one. I am very sorry for the inconvenience, however Apple's engineers are working very hard towards a resolution for this issue.
I cannot offer a refund for the purchases you have made this year, however I have taken the liberty of issuing five complimentary song credits to your iTunes Store account "[email protected]".
