Compatible dvd burner iphoto 6

I'm about to buy an external dvd burner for my G4 12" power book running Panther10.39. I want to burn dvds to archive IPhoto 6, 900 pics for 2005, all about 3mg and maintain albums.
In Iphoto help there is a statement "To see a list of external CD/DVD drives that work with Mac OS X, look on the Apple website." I've spent much time trying to find this list but cannot locate it! Can anyone help? I've ordered a Lacie firewire dvd burner.
Many thanks!
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Halifax,
I am using the LaCie DVD burner at this very moment on a 12in Powerbook with Tiger. It works great. DVD quality with iDVD has been excellent.

  • Compatible DVD Drive problem on Satellite U200

I am over in Iraq and my commander's cd drive quit on the Satellite U200 laptop. The drive that was in there was UJDA765 which cannot burn DVD's. The problem with that drive is it quit seeing DVD's and the CD part only worked sometime and then it made noise.
I looked for a compatible DVD burner to replace it with and found UJ-822B. Several sites said it was compatible and I found people that say they were using it. Can anyone tell me if it really is? I already had the drive shipped here. Is there something that I need to do to get the laptop to see it? It does not show up in the hardware section, but it has power and opens and closes correctly. I have moved to the point of considering flashing the bios, I have done that many times but do not see any benefit as the changes in the new BIOS.
If I was wrong, can someone tell me a DVD burner that is compatible?

    Thanks Barrie,
I ordered the 765 and installed it, however now I am getting the pxe driver error on bootup and the drive is not found. I checked the in the bios and saw no problems, I did change the order of bootup and that did not resolve the problem as I found that recommended on several sites.
I removed the battery and checked the connections but the plug it plugs into is soldered to the board so that is not a problem. The old drive had a cd/dvd (755 model), it is still found but only the CD works, the dvd does not.
I thought about replacing the laser on the drive itself, but now that I have the new drive and it still is not working I am not sure. I am going to replace the bios with the newest version but other than that I think this laptop is just shot.

  • What are third party compatible DVD burners?

I can't seem to find a clear answer to this question: What is a "third party compatible" DVD burner that I can use with iMovie/iDVD?
I don't have an internal DVD burner, so I'm thinking of picking up an external one. Problem is, I don't know which ones will work. Is there a list somewhere?
Do I need a firewire burner or can I use USB 2.0?
    Thanks.

LaCie Firewire External DVD burners are good and they include Toast software.

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

  • Can anyone recommend a  New DVD burner compatible with Retrospect?

I'm hoping some more experienced users can help me find a new DVD burner for my trusty old G4 (Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 - mirror doors).
My original Superdrive still functions, but has become a little erratic at times (and is a tad slow - like me), so I'm considering a new external burner (Firewire preferred). I've located a new LaCie drive (22x, DVD-DL, lightscribe, etc etc) model reference 301484U, but I cannot determine if it is Retrospect compatible.
As a Graphic Designer, I've built up over the years a very large Retrospect archive of all my work & clients files (several hundred CDs & DVDs), to which I must retain access. I checked the EMC (Dantz) web-site, but the burner is not listed, so I don't know if it is or is not compatible, just not tested.
I decided to go with an external/firewire drive in the hope that when I do buy a new Mac Pro I can switch it over to the new machine.
I suppose as an alternative, if I could find an external version of whatever model Superdrive is included in the current Mac Pros, that would more than likely work with Retrospect.
I would appreciate any suggestions/comments or recommendations

In the past year I have bought a Pioneer for my old G4 and a LG for my MacPro at Best Buy when they have been on sale. No problems, easy installs. If you need more detailed/user experiences check out the drive database at:

  • Playback movie burned to DVD from iPhoto

When I burn a movie to a DVD from iPhoto I get an error message on playback that says "the movie contains an invalid data reference and will not playback". Any suggestions?

Also, the movies don't appear on the DVD when I play it in the DVD/Blue Ray in the other room.
You can't burn a DVD like that with iPhoto. You need an authoring application like iDVD or Toast to correctly format the disk.

  • Burned DVD from iphoto but pics are black

I burned a DVD from iphoto that contained a large file of pictures. Upon opening the disk I could see the pictures. However, after scrolling through a few of them, my iphoto became extremely slow and then the pictures would not come back. Instead of seeing a picture I see a black box with a dotted frame where the picture should be.
The DVD worked when I opened APSE and I edited my pictures that way.
But why is my iphoto not cooperating with a disc that was created with iphoto?
Is it because I created the disc using an older version of iphoto?

Has something to do with me renaming the rolls of film.

  • IPhoto 5 crashes at start of DVD burn

iPhoto 5 crashes at start of DVD burn.
Share>Burn disk works with CD and DVD for a smart folder of 300 pics= 330 MB.
However, reproducibly, when I try to burn a smart folder of 3649 pics, 3.3 Gb "used" 1.1.GB "available", iPhoto crashes when the "preparing to burn" progress bar is completed

This happened to me again, after it was "fixed". Apple support gave me the "fix" - "temporary workaround" is a better description. They also suggested ugrading to IPhoto 6 - "now uses the same burn routine as the Finder".
Rebuild the iPhoto library- make a copy first. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107947
The second time, I also checked the option "Rebuild the iPhoto library database" - do not know if that was necessary, bit I can burn 4.1 Gb - for now.

I am reading this post in the iphoto for iOS forum. The iPad does not burn photos to a DVD. Perhaps you'll get some assistance if you posted in th general iPhoto forum.

  • Burning iPhoto Library to DVD

I had a lot of new photos and wanted to back up my iPhoto Library. I burned the library it to a DVD in iPhoto. Over 2600 photos. All seems to have gone fine, but it took over 1/2 hour. Is that about right? I didn't expect it would take nearly so long (although I really don't know why I think that).
In the future, am I okay not burning the whole library---just the newly added photos not on the DVD I burned today? I did lose the whole library a few months ago and gratefully had backed it up.
    Thanks.

It mostly depends on the speed of your DVD burner and the media it is using, but does not sound unreasonable to me!
I agree with the first response that an external HD is a good idea. I have and older "mobile disk" external hd case which has firewire 400. It works great with a 120 gb WD HD, and runs cool.
Periodically, I use "Super Duper" to clone the HD every month, and every week copy the iPhoto library over to it as an additional file. If my iMac hd fails, the HD could be used as a external boot drive and I would only be a week out in updates. If the iMac needs a new HD I could either install the one from the external case or duplicate it to a new HD in the iMac.
I have just started using RAW images and keep them in a separate folder from iPhoto. Once, I have gone through these RAW images and exported the "keepers" to iphoto as JPEG's the original RAW files are periodically transferred to a DVD for archiving. I always have the original image to work with, like keeping the "negatives" from a film camera.
Well...that's my strategy anwyay...and I am sticking with it!!!

  • I am using MacBook Pro OS 10.6.8. I need a compatible CD/DVD burner. Can someone recommend one?

Can someone recommend a compatible CD/DVD burner for a MacBook Pro? I have returned two burners, so far, that were not compatible,.

True to the extent that out of the box they indeed will not work with Macs other than Airs and Retinas.  However a minor modification WILL make them compatible with other Macs.  Here are the instructions:

  • Problems with burning iPhoto library to DVD

When I try to burn my iPhoto library to a DVD, iPhoto eventually always crashes.
iPhoto will prepare to burn and the window to select output drive, spee, etc. will com up. After clicking on "burn", iPhoto is always end.
    What could be wrong?
Is my iPhoto library maybe corrupted?
If yes, can I do something about it?
    Infos:
iBook G4, 640 RAM, HD 30GB (3.72 available), OSX Tiger, external LACIE d2 DUAL DVD+-RW DRIVE, iPhoto library: 3.53 GB
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi iRose,
Thanks for giving all your info. Your free space on your hard drive is not enough to do a successful burn of the entire iPhoto Library. Do you have an external drive? Is your drive supported for iPhoto burning? usually on the internal that comes with the computer is supported.
Try instead to burn the entire iPhoto Library folder in the Finder using your external burner.
    Close iPhoto
    I can't burn a Cd or DVD
The next info is from iPhoto FAQ on the Apple site
Question 5: Can I burn a CD or DVD to back up my iPhoto library?
Answer: Yes, you can easily back up your iPhoto library by using the CD burning capabilities of Mac OS X. Simply insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use iDVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac.

  • Burning a windows DVD from iPhoto 09

Dose a Windows DVD burned from iPhoto have the information on board to allow printing of the photos, I seem to recollect one had the choice of including this info prior to the burn, but cannot remember from where.

It worked for me and I'm using iPhoto '08. I was trying to see how to make the MAC created DVD readable on Windows. see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2135626
Thanks for the simple instructions. You made my day.

What external dvd burner is compatible with my 2007 mac mini running OS X 10.5.8?

I have an LG GE24LU20 and works great with either my iMac or Mac Mini.

plus it is way faster and less finicky than the superdrives.

  • Burn iphoto 11 slideshow to DVD

is there a way to burn iphoto 11 sldeshows to DVD on my macbook pro (2012) running mountain lion. thanks

Export the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.
    Other options:
    Burn: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn
    Toast: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/6351/toast-titanium
But there are lots of others too. Search on the App Store or MacUpdate
