Compatible HD Camcorders

I am in the market to purchase an HD Camcorder and can't figure out which ones are compatible with IMovie'08. Think the best is Sony since it stores in MPEG-2 format but does anyone have any suggestions? I want a seamless interface with IMovie. Thanks!

I'm not quite sure if you mean a High Definition or a Hard Drive camcorder. I'm thinking because you like the Sony that records in MPEG 2, you are talking hard drive, but MPEG 2 is usually what DVD cams record to. Hence the confusion. Just a suggestion, but you will get better quality video from a minDV tape cam and it will also allow you to work seamlessly with iMovie 06, which you may decide you want to use, instead of 08, after you find you want to do a more serious editing job on your video. Buy a top of the line tape cam and you will never regret it.

  • A list of compatible digital camcorders for imovie 6.0.1 (255)

I'm looking for a list of camcorders that are compatible with imovie 6.0.1. I have a JVC GR-DVL9500U and it will intermittently work, what I mean is on a fresh install of the application and reset of the camera imovie will recognize the camcorder, the application will work with the camcorder for a few minutes then the application locks up and it forces me to do a hard restart with the power button, when the computer reboots the camcorder is no longer recognized. Does anyone have a list of supported camcorders or a solution to my problem?
    Thanks

Most camcorders which have a little FireWire/DV/i.Link connector are pretty much compatible with iMovie, although different models may have different quirks.
Long ago Apple said that it wouldn't or couldn't test every camcorder with every new release of iMovie, but the latest list of camcorders ..which is never complete or up-to-date, should be here, but - as you can see - it just leads to different manufacturers' own web-sites nowadays, as Apple just can't test every single cam which is on the market.
Apple's info and suggestions about getting camcorders to be recognised by iMovie is here.
Essentially, it involves trying every permutation of camera off, or camera on, before connecting to or starting iMovie ..or starting iMovie with the camera already connected and playing ..or not!
Things you might try include throwing away iMovie's Preferences ..i.e; a file called "com.apple.iMovie.plist" which is stored in <your user name>/Library/Preferences.
Dan's excellent "Unofficial iMovie FAQ" also has possible answers to this and many many more iMovie questions, here.

  • Mac Compatible Consumer Camcorders

Is there anyone who can provide a list of consumer camcorders compatible with iMac G5 and iMovie?
Also can anyone provide specific specifications one should look for when purchasing a camcorder so that it is compatible with the Mac?
    Thanks so much!

asking for camera recommendation is a very common topic on this board, Carrie, please make use of the forum's search-feature...
and you will not find a 'complete' list, camera manufacturers work too fast .. ;))
    basicly:
    * any miniDV is compatible
    * make sure, your camcorder is attached via firewire/dv-in, out/iLink/IEEE1394 (=different names, same thing....)
    * record in SL mode, not LP (longplay)
    * set audio to 48kHz/16bit (not 34/12bit or whatever...)
    * stay away from harddrive, flashmem, dvd, mini-dvd, solid-state, whatever devices... NOT compatible with iM!
    * rely on big brand names as Sony, Canon, Panasonic...
    * some Canons don't accept any other device (as an ext. harddrive) on same firewire bus..
    * 3ccd is sometimes better than 1 ccd.. read reports on camcorderinfo.com etc.
    ... and get a tripod ..

  • Compatible DV Camcorders

Is there still a list on camcorders which are compatible with iMovie 2, on the Apple Website? I am particularly interested in the Canon MVX 460. Will this work easily with iMovie?

that is NOT true...at least not for me. I am so irritated that after spending over a thousand for this camera they fail to tell us that the ilink cable is the only way to get film into the computer or any other recording device.
Both my G5 and 5 month old DVD burner will only read the signal from fire wire momentarily then loose the signal.
Through I movie the camera is seen but no image is available--just a blue screen
    Any suggestions?
After getting an Ilink cable it looks like I will also have to get a card for my Mac to to read it too!
Anyone who has one please let me know before I return the camera. I am not too interested in upgrading hundreds of dollars for this camera when there are others that work fine.
    Thanks

  • Compatible cheap camcorders - under $500.00

    Hello List
I am looking into purchasing a cheap camcorder, that are compatible with Final Cut Pro. Tape or Card I don't care. The important thing is that I can easily edit the footage without having to do any conversion or ripping.
There used to be a supported cameras list for earlier versions of final cut. Is there one for Final Cut Pro 5?
any advice or receommendations are much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Regarding HD versus SD in the under $500.00 camcorder pricerange, what is your opinion regarding workflow and image quality? I understand that with a cheap HD'ish camcorder you'll get more pixels but in an 'inconvenient' delievery format that needs to be converted for FCP. Is the final image quality compareable to an uncompressed miniDV image that is smaller yet not compressed?
What about the workflow, how much of a pain is the additional conversion from mp4 or mpeg4 ( or whatever format these camcorders output ) to a dv quicktime movie?
Any insight or advice much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Can you recommend a camcorder that is compatible with iMovie 08?

I looked at the list of compatible video camcorders with iMovie 08, but was wondering if anyone has a strong recommendation for a camcorder that is really working well. I'm ready to buy a new camcorder, but want to really avoid any
issues regarding conflicts with the software, etc...
Thanks for saving me a headache.

I like Canon MUCH better than Sony. Sony is a direct competitor of Apple and as such I think they support Apple with reduced enthusiasm.
Canon makes excellent equipment and their technical support people always seem Macintosh savvy (They were very familiar with iMovie).

I use my Canon with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. (and occasionally with iMovie 08)

I have just spent 2 hrs trying to connect my Sony HC-24 Handycam to i-Movie does not recognize the camera, any advice. ?.

    Fossils,
its odd, Apple used to list iMovie compatible digital camcorders on their site, but now its only digital still cameras. I would first make sure you are using the firewire ports, not USB (that Handycam has both, but iMovie only supports firewire for video I think)

  • Are the new Sony camcorders with a micro USB multi-terminal LANC compatible? (the ones under $800)

I've noticed that one of the Sony recommended accessories for some of the new camcorders on their website include the Sony wired remote with a zoom rocker. However it isn't specified if this connection is actually LANC compatible and, if so, could an adapter be used to convert from the micro USB connection type to 3.5mm standard LANC controller connection?

    Hi VideoGeek,
To check the compatible camcorders with this adapter,
pls see this link: VMC-AVM1 A/V R Adapter Cable
And just below the image of the product, click the "Compatibility" tab,
It will display the compatible camcorders.
If my post answers your question, please mark it as "Accept as Solution"

  • Compatible Camcorders for Mac

Does anyone have any ideas as to what camcorders are compatible with Macs? I want to be able to transfer video from a camcorder to my Mac. I haven't purchased a new camcorder yet and want to be well informed before I make a mistake.

My Sony Mini-DV works via FireWire. So, any Sony with iLink should work. I know it's not a camcorder, but the Flip Video imports easily as well. The upside to the Flip is that I just copy video files over, and the downside is no control over specific clips. Advantages to iLink, or Firewire, is that iMovie will control the camcorder, allowing you to fast forward, rewind, etc and get that specific part that you want (or skip the part you dont). There really isn't a downside, other than file size. Higher resolution camcorders will import with a larger file size.

  • Where can I find a list of Camcorders compatible with FCP X?

Where can I find a list of Camcorders compatible with FCP X?

    I'll modify that first word!
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/cameras/en/index.html?
However, be aware that Apple has neither the time nor the incentive to test every camera on the market, so there will be many more models, old and new, that will work perfectly even though they are not on the database.

  • Less and less camcorders compatible with FCE ?????

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm looking at a lot of the 2007 HD consumer camcorders and there are less options available for MAC users. Even those at the $1600 mark. Are we going to see a decline in FCE use because APPLE is not stepping up to the plate? I mean c'mon, the APPLE compatibility list is so old, can they at least look at some new models and stick them on the list? I eman it's not alot. Look at the new Panasonic consumer camcorders, not many in HD but are they compatible? I'm hearing that are not with FCE, whereas the older GS models and others were? Whats the true story with this?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
The compatibility list is obsolete, and in my own opinion it's give more confusion than information.
As prices go down for HDV consumer camera, the spec of camcorders going in the same direction.
Recording on hard disk or DVD allows to minimize the form factory of camera and the cost of the camera itself.
Push record, push stop, eject the DVD and watch the result on your TV: that's the consumer way to make movie.
In the vast majority, consumers do not edit movies ( do you remember plain 8mm film? "no editing" for the mass, same thing for VHS video) .
So camcorder's company focus on this mass of consumers: they simply don't need editing capability.
FCE is not used by the vast majority.
FCE is aimed toward prosumers and professional market: those persons do editing in an extensive way and the use prosumer or professionnal gears. Gears that use the reliable and mature system: DV (in all flavors) and HDV recorded on...DV tapes.
I'm pretty sure that the next generation of iMovie will support newer recording media (it actually support DV, HDV and mpeg-4(a mass consumers format) before apple PRO applications like FCE.
