Compatible Laptops with Solaris 10?
Hi,
I want to buy a laptop that will be compatible with Solaris 10, but since it's still beta, they don't have any test suite certified systems on the list yet.
Can anyone suggest a cheaper laptop that is compatible with 10? I assume any laptop that works with 9 will also work under 10.
I'd like to get one with minimal configuration...I don't really want to have to edit text files and install xfree to get things working. It will be a dual-boot system with windows, and I anticipate having to re-install Solaris here and there since Windows is territorial when that needs to be re-installed...
If anyone has any suggestions, please reply.
Thanks in advance.
A good starting point is Linux. If the laptop runs Linux very well out of the box, and you use stable distro such as JDS (this is based on Linux 2.4.19), then you have a better chance.
Another point is Xfree86, since Solaris 10 now bundles it.
I'm using Dell 8500 with nvidia. Don't use it, since you don't want to search for drivers. I had to manually get the ethernet working.
hope it helps

I had an early version of Photoshop (2.0 I think) that worked perfect on windows vista. I bought a new laptop with windows 8.1 and the Photoshop won't install. Which version of Photoshop compatible with Windows 8.1 is closest to the older Photoshop?
I think you mean Photoshop CS2. Photoshop 2 is from around 1992. The old Adobe activation servers were taken down. CS2 is about a decade old Adobe made a new download for old customers that legal customers can download and install. Download Acrobat 7 and CS2 products

Cs5 compatible laptop video cards with hardware acceleration
Is there a list or does anyone know of laptops with compatible video cards for cs5 hardware acceleration? This would be for a windows 7 64bit system.'
Thanks!its not so much a space issue as a power issue, but space is a concern too. I suppose I was looking for a list of laptop compatible cs5 cards. I know that there are cards out there that are and it would be wonderful if adobe compiled a list like they have for standard video cards. And yes you are right, a lot of the video cards listed on that page also have mobile counterparts but are not always compatible since they use different drivers.
Does anyone have laptop experience with getting full hardware acceleration support?
Thanks. -
Install Solaris 8 on Gateway Laptop with Windows XP
I have Gateway laptop with Windows XP pre-installed. Now I want to install Solaris 8 without removing the Windows XP. I wanted to use dual boot option. Can any body advice me if there is any whit paper on this subject(with step by step insturctions). I have partition magic but it can only partition and format to NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and Ext2 (linux only).
Thanks for your help.
ramboIt can be done but the biggest stump is the network interface. I've an Acer 350 series with a built-in NIC. I also use XFree86 because the Xsun doesn't recognize the video card. The biggest problem in getting Solaris x86 working is getting the network interface to work, since the PCMCIA support is horrible. You need to be sure the the components on your laptop conform to the HCL. As for X, just use XFree86.

Hi,
Are CVS 1.11.21 and PVCS 6.8.10 compatible with solaris 5.10 Sparc Unix server.
Thanks... haven't a clue.
You've asked a software question in a hardware forum.
The question is beyond the scope of these forums.
You may need to try somewhere else, perhaps somewhere that is
more focussed on the software or the OS you hope to use with it.
I tried a quick Google search on each, and found:
http://ximbiot.com/cvs/manual/cvs-1.11.21/cvs.html
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=649671&messageID=3823547
I didn't bother to go beyond the first Google page of results from each search. -
Suncluster 3.0 binary Not Compatible with Solaris 8
I am not sure if anyone experienced the same problem. But I downloaded the latest Suncluster 3.0 binary from http://wwws.sun.com/software/cluster/get.html
Once extracted there is a file that saids "SOLARIS9ONLY". But I took a chance and tried installing it on Solaris 8 anyways. There is a great deal of problems once it finished installing. Solaris 8 experiences serious "no dump services" and other filesystem problems. Possibly previous patches such as 110648-25 will fix this, but this will obviously never install. Since the files in this patch are dated much earlier than the files found in the cluster3.0 patch.
Basically I am coming to the general conclusion that there is no "solaris cluster 3.0 binary" available for solaris 8 to the general public. I know in the past in my previous company we have installed older versions of cluster 3.0 with solaris 8 no problem. Anyone know where we can download older versions that work?Hi I am facing the same problem as mentioned above. I wanted to know the location from where I can download Sun Cluster 3.0 for Solaris 8.
Can someone point this out asap ?

AMD/ATI driver problems on a Dell laptop with attached dual monitors
I have a Dell Precision M4800 laptop with a docking station for two additional monitors. I'm shooting for a "big desktop" setup, with my laptop display and the two external monitors forming one large multi-monitor X screen.
When deciding which video driver I'd need, I did the usual:
$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Venus XT [Radeon HD 8800M Series]
Which is weird, because the M4800 isn't shipped with 8800M cards. Rather, it's shipped with the AMD FirePro M5100 Mobility Pro (see above link) (also, too many "Pros", AMD...).
I tried the open-source driver, but I couldn't get both my external monitors working in tandem, so I went with catalyst-test, since the non-beta version of the proprietary driver doesn't support the 3.13 kernel (or my alleged 8800M series card, for what it's worth).
My display setup using catalyst-test is still far from ideal. My dual (horizontally adjacent) monitors reset to cloned/mirrored desktops after every reboot, and my machine refuses to show three monitors (dual monitors + laptop display), even with the 2GB of dedicated RAM in my graphics card (see above M4800 link). There's other miscellaneous annoyances as well.
Using hardinfo, I see that my VGA driver thinks it only has 256MB of RAM... which doesn't align with the M4800 specs. Is there a way to change this value?
Just today, I found the catalyst-firepro driver, which I think might be the correct driver for my laptop, at least given the specs on the M4800 from the website.
There's also the option of not using my AMD card at all, and just using the Intel graphics on my laptop. (I had to disable hybrid graphics in my BIOS to get any AMD-specific drivers to work). I'd like to steer away from this, due to the performance loss, but I'd be willing to make the change if the pros outweighed the cons.
As I see it, I have a few options:
AMD/ATI open source driver: Can't seem to get two monitors working, much less three...
catalyst-test: Any two monitors will work together, but not three. Other annoyances.
catalyst-firepro: Have not tested yet.
Intel open-source driver with AMD card disabled: Have not tested yet.
Can anyone who has had similar issues and/or hardware offer a best course of action which has worked for them? I know we're supposed to avoid "opinion" questions, but I think this is grounded enough in the scientific method to merit some helpful responses.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!clfarron4 wrote:
The last option to me is screaming catalyst-pxp at me, because that's one of the few options if you have integrated graphics and a discrete graphics card.
Let me get this straight: Can you disable the either or both of the Intel/AMD graphics in the BIOS settings? If so, but don't want to disable either, you might want to look at the hybrid graphics section of the wiki.
I know about powerXpress and I think I'd like to avoid it. My experience with hybrid graphics on other Linux distributions is that it's rather unstable or just plain unsupported. If someone can convince me otherwise, given their experience with hybrid graphics on Arch/Linux, I might reconsider.
I'm fairly certain I can enable either of my GPU's separately, but I'll have to check for sure next I reboot my PC.
The last option I mentioned because I thought the Intel drivers might be more robust than the AMD drivers, which have don't have a sterling reputation when it comes to supporting Linux (compared to nVidia anyways, who I know in the past have had good Linux support). -
I have a sony laptop with window 7 64 bit initially which I upgraded to windows 8 64 bit. But due to formatting later, I had to reinstall the windows and this time I installed windows 8 32 bit. Now I have tried installing iTunes for 64 bit windows 8 as well as 32 bit Windows 8 but none of them is getting installed. The message I get is, "this programme is not compatible for your pc" (or words to that affect since I dont remember the exact words but this is the meaning).
Can some body send me the link to the right file please. I need iTunes to transfer files from my iPod and iPhone to my laptop.
RegardsHi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

Laptop with window 7 won't print to network HP printer
purchased a Toshiba Laptop and cannot get it to print to my HP PSC 750 network printer. I have downloaded the drivers and made sure it was compatiable with that printer. It installed the printer with no problem. It shows "ready" but when I send a test print or any other type of document to it it will go to the que and shows "printing error" When I troubleshoot it shows that there are jobs in the que and needs to be cleared....but when I do that and try another test page I get the same scenario. I have also turned off the firewall to my desktop and tried to print. I have a desktop with XP home and 2 other laptops with XP and all three of them will print to that printer. I contacted the Geek Squad and they don't have a fix either. Is it something with the new Window 7? HELP! I have spent about 10 hours trying to get this printer to work and about have given up!
Many Vista driver are compatible with Windows 7, have you tried installing these? Then, have you tried to make windows search for new drivers? It has even compatible ones, they could work. You can force your windows to search for new drivers even pluggin your printer directly to your pc, once the're installed, you can make the connection procedure to the printer in LAN.

Is solaris 10 compatible with iPlanet Web Server 6.x and jdk1.5?
In general, solaris is backwards compatible.
So if it worked in any previous version of solaris, it will work with solaris 10..
And Solaris 10 ships with jdk1.5 by default. -
How do I set up wireless printing of my Officejet Pro 8500 on a laptop with Windows 8?
How do I set up wireless printing from my all in one Officejet Pro 8500 printer to my laptop with Windows 8?
You can set up your printer for wireless pretty easily if you have the Full Feature Software installed on your computer for your printer. The setup is done as part of the installation.
Read through below, then select how you wish to proceed. There is a video to assist - see below!
Install Printer Driver / Software
If your printer stops working (and it’s not a hardware problem), it may be due to software or driver issues. There are tools to help you diagnose the problem and help documents to guide you to success.
You might just desire extra features for your printer, or need extra tools to help with scheduled maintenance.
In many cases, you can (re)install the Full Feature Softwarefor your printer to enhance its capabilities. The HP Solution Center is an integrated part of the FFS. For e-print, you will want the e-print software.
If you have the CD that came with your printer, use that to install your Printer software -- IF the CD is compatible with your current Operating System. If you do not have the CD, or if the software on the CD is outdated, then you can use the online installation tools.
(Re)install the basic driver or HP Printer Full Feature Software or other software for your printer:
Drivers control hardware connected to the computer (wired or wireless)
Software controls the programs that interact with the User
Go to the top of the forum page to Support and Drivers
Officejet Pro 8500 Series
Enter your Printer Model information, and then go to Software and Drivers...
Enter your Operating System in the Drop-down menu... Click NEXT and Scroll down
Look for category Driver - Product Installation Software
Select the appropriate Basic Driver, e-print, or Full Feature Software, as appropriate
NOTE: You may also wish to download the Print and Scan Doctor and / or other Tools from Category - Utilities
Save the *.exe installation package(s) on your computer
Pay attention to the name and the location of the file(s) when you save the file(s). The file(s) will likely save to the "Downloads “folder.
You may remove your existing printer software with the following tool. Fixit is of particular use when the existing printer software is being replaced due to severe problems with the printing program.
Fixit -- Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled
NOTE: If you have a recent working version of the Full Feature Software on your computer, you may opt to skip removing the existing printer software in the above separate step. During installation of your Full Feature Software, when the installer package detects the “old” printer software on your computer, the program will ask you to remove that old software: The program will then invoke an internal printer software removal program that is written to remove printer software. Once most of the old printer software is removed, you will be asked to Reboot your computer and log back in. After you log in, the final bits of the old printer program(s) are deleted and the new software will be installed. Depending on your system, the whole uninstall and install process might take as much as eight to twelve minutes.
Remember to Install the programs from Category Utilities first, if applicable, as these are smaller in size.
Install the downloaded Printer Software package last.
If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.
NOTES:
If using: Download and install the driver software before connecting a USB cable.
After the initial installation is complete, be sure to check for and install any relevant updates - check Category - Update. The Updates are important and can mean the difference between software that works as expected and software that does not work.
You may also wish to check for a Category named Firmware. Installation of any package in this Catagory is personal choice and must be based on the contents in the package and whether or not your printer is working as expected.
