Compatible software - Canon Rebel XSi DSLR?

Hi,
I have a Canon Rebel XSi that i purchased in 2008. I'm trying to pull photos all of it, which I was successfully able to do once since purchasing my new macbook pro (with Lion), but now when I connect my camera to my laptop, it doesn't recognize the camera. I don't think that i still have the original CD for the camera - can anyone help?
Thanks!

So you're saying not even the built in software available does not work?
Your old macbook also ran Lion (you purchased Lion for it?)
Which Canon software are you talking about?
A card reader is $15 or less.
Not knowing what happened during your transfer of files and/or any other problems with your system, it's difficult to guess why it no longer works. At this point, I'd hate to suggest a complete reinstall.
However, since you say your MBP is new - why don't you simply take it and your camera to the nearest Applestore - you're under warranty. Take advantage of it!

• CR2 files from Canon Rebel XSi won't open in CS2

Ok, so I have a powerbook G4 with Tiger Mac OS X and CS2 student version. I am basically computer illiterate so feel free to state the obvious here.
I bought a new Canon Rebel XSi and have been shooting raw CR2 files. I have done this in the past with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and never had a problem... now the error window pops up saying my file is unrecognizable. I did the only things I know how to do which was to check for updates and verify permissions in disc utility - this did not help.
Still thinking it was my computer or the software I backed everything up and wiped the hard drive clean by erasing and reinstalling the original discs and then reloading CS2 and again doing all of the updates - this did not help.
I have spent 3 days reading in these forums and trying to clear caches and download DNG's (by the directions into the right library) and still it does not work. I even downloaded trial versions of CS3 and CS4.
Now I'm sure my computer is a downloaded mess and I still have no access to my raw files!
Please Please Please help me!

You're welcome, Nikki.
>what do you do with the paper with a hard drive icon on it when you download something?

I assume you mean the
disc image file with a ".dmg" extension.

Personally I keep any such disc image file if its contents prove successful and discard it when a new version comes along that also proves to work OK. Otherwise, I delete them right away. It's your choice. I prefer to have the dmg file around in case I have to install its contents again for whatever reason without having to download it again.
That being said, I don't keep anything on my desktop,

• PSE7.0 displays some canon rebel xsi raw camera files garbled

Greetings,
I have PSE7.0 running on Vista SP1. I have upgraded the raw file plugin to version 5.2 but still some files display with garbled output. Needless to say Canon provided software is able to view it correctly. Similarly the camera displays it correctly. My camera is Canon Rebel XSi.
Please let me know what I can do to solve this issue.
Thanks.

First, verify that you installed ACR 5.2 correctly by doing Help > System Info in the editor and scrolling down to Camera Raw -- does it show version 5.2?

• Canon Rebel XSi and OSX - How to copy files from camera?

How do I copy the files from my Canon Rebel XSi to my Mac? I can "import them into iPhoto but is there a simple copy/paste option such as the camera appearing within the Finder?
On Vista it comes up as a Camera device within Windows Explorer.
Cheers
Rex

You might not be able to mount the Canon on the desktop unless it has a setting in the camera menu to switch it to USB Mass Storage mode. Many camera brands can do this, but many Canon models cannot.
It's still pretty easy to get images off it, though. In addition to iPhoto, you can use Apple Image Capture to select and download images to any folder, or any other software that supports the XSi like Canon EOS Utility (included) or Adobe Bridge/Photoshop/Camera Raw. If the XSi doesn't turn up in those apps, make sure you've got the latest versions.
I don't have the XSi, I have an older model, but according to reviews, the XSi still doesn't have USB Mass Storage support. Without that support I don't think it's going to show up on a Mac desktop.
You may be seeing it show up for drag-and-drop on a Windows Vista desktop, but the link above says that drag-and-drop in Windows only supports JPEG files, not RAW files. Are you getting just JPEG files on the Windows desktop? If so, and if you intend to use the superior RAW format, then basically you don't have drag-and-drop on Mac or Windows, if the review is correct.

• Updated to latest ACR 6.6 but still can't open CR2 files from Canon Rebel XSi

I updated to latest version of Adobe Camera Raw 6.6 but still can't seem to open my CR2 files in Photoshop. Can't open them in Lightroom either, no preview in Bridge or OS.
I'm running OS 10.7.2 and Photshop 12.1 x 64 which is CS5.1 I suppose.
I've downloaded Canon's EOS utility hoping that would somehow do something as well but nothing.
The images were shot on Canon Rebel XSi which is certainly supported by the newest version of ACR. So I have no clue as to what's happening... I previously downloaded these images onto my old laptop about a year ago and everything was fine, however now I'm not even getting a preview in OS. Do I have to revert to an older version of ACR (perhaps the same one I used originally?) to open these files again? These files have been stored on a hard drive, so I'm not downloading them directly from the camera-again, this probably has nothing to do with it but not sure what to do. A lot of the posts I've seen recommend downloading the latest version of ACR to fix the issue, but again I've done that and as a matter of fact the camera (Rebel XSi) has been supported for some time now...
In OS, when the image is selected no preview:
Lightroom error:
Bridge, no preview:
Photoshop error:

Something appears to be wrong with your files.
Are most of your images approx. 3.7 MB?
This is very small for a 12 MP image.
If you go back to the original file on your laptop, what is the file size?
Also the fact that the Mac OS is not showing the preview is unusual.
Perhaps these files got corrupted when they were moved to your new computer.
Can you open these files OK on your old laptop?
Is the OS showing the previews on your old laptop?
Also compare the file sizes between old and new computer.
Have you tried repairing your permissions?
Try Disk Utility in your Macs Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility to see if this helps.
Good Luck!

• Lightroom 1.4.1 won't read RAW or RAW+JPEG from Canon Rebel Xsi

I use Windows. I started with LIghtroom 1. Technical support said Lightroom 1.4.1 update would let allow me to import RAW and RAW+JPEG files from Canon Rebel Xsi into Lightroom. I downloaded the update. Lightroom still will not recognize RAW or JPEG+RAW photos taken with my Canon Rebel Xsi. Lightroom will read straight JPEG photos taken with this camera. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this (e.g. be able to import RAW and RAW+JPEG files)? Sorry if there is a simple thing to fix to this or if I could have found the solution somewhere else on this site. I am a Lightroom novice and have been struggling with this issue for some time now. Thanks in Advance.

Thanks everyone for all your help! I am now able to import the RAW files. Steve and Don especially thanks so much! I am posting my solution in case someone out there has had the same problem.
In the past, using the prompt generated from within LR, I downloaded the update and ran the install. However using Don's information I realized the splash screen indicated 1.1 and the number did not match the build # provided by Don.
Based on this information, I went to the Adobe site, reran the download via the Adobe site (not LR) and reran the install. Of note, this install process gave different screens from when I ran install from the files downloaded accessed via the LR prompt. The biggest difference is that this time I got Adobe directions for how to execute the update. I next confirmed that I had the update files on the hard drive, opened the file as directed by Adobe and the install updated. However I was still getting the LR 1.1 splash screen.
Based on information posted elsewhere, I determined that I needed to delete the LR icon from my desktop. I moved "LR 1.4.1" from the start menu to the desktop. I now launch LR 1.4.1 when I hit the LR icon and I have successfully downloaded a boatload of RAW files. Thanks All! You are geniuses!

• Canon Rebel XSi and RAW

I am trying to import my RAW+jpeg mix files and the jpeg's are fine, but the RAW images give me a message that says they are not in a supported format. I have a friend who has imported his RAW files into Aperture 3.03 from the same camera model with no problem.
I am using Aperture 3.03 with the Digital Camera RAW 3.02.
Thoughts?

I imagine you mean the latest update of Digital Camera Raw 3.2 and you are on the latest software updates for the Mac and the firmware updates for the Rebel XSi:
http://www.canon.ca/InetDD/downloadDriverOs.htm?sessionid=839096DB870DC92BA93594 EC6BA63816&Families=1&Lines=7&Products=0002200420&LANGUAGE=ENG&URL=http%3A%2F%2F canoncanada.custhelp.com%2Fapp%2Fanswers%2Flist%2Fp%2F13%252C498%2Fc%2Fr_id%2F16 6%2Fsearch%2F1rnflag%3DDD&act=&actiontype=&contrl=os#
Certainly RAW+JPEG has been supported since Snow Leopard 10.6.0 so I suspect there’s some setting on the camera that is recording something differently than your friend. I use RAW+JPEG in the Adobe RGB 1998 colour space on my Canon Rebel XT without a problem. Recheck your settings for the camera, ensure all Canon stuff is current, and review the Import dialog in Aperture to see if you are handling the import of RAW+JPEG correctly.

• New Canon Rebel XSI, and Aperture won't read the .CS2 files properly??

Hello all,
I have read through the posts but didn't fine one that answered my question. I just bought a Canon XSI and tried to upload my RAW files to Aperture, and first it showed the "unsupported image format" red screen. After messing around I could get it to see the images, but they were the size of thumbnails. It will read the JPG files fine. The Aperture site says that the CR2 files should work. I also tried deleting the rawfile in the system folder and re-ran the installer for 2.1 update, didn't change a thing. My Aperture version is 2.1.1. Any ideas?
Thanks,
John

Lucked out and figured out the real problem thanks to Mark Olson's blog:
http://markolson.ca/2008/07/17/canon-eos-450d-rebel-xsi-cr2-raw-on-mac/
It turns out that the problem was related to RAW+JPG. Mac does not import the RAW files properly and I should have suspected this being the problem when I noticed the RAW file size was way too small (exact same size as the JPG file).
Luckily I had not deleted the files from my memory card so I was able to go back and import the RAW images again. Now at this point I'm going to ask Steve to cover his eyes because I had to use Vista to download the files!
All seems ok now.

• Canon Rebel xsi/450D: Intervalometer app for ios?

Hi,
Any good recommndation for intervalometer app on ios (preferably free) and what kind of cable do i need to connect with Rebel xsi/450D?

That camera is so new that you're just going to have to wait for RAW support. Your option, in the meantime, is to use the Camera Raw conversion.

• Can't import RAW files from Canon Rebel Xsi (450d)

I have to use an Adobe Camera Raw program to convert to DNG files and then import into iPhoto 08'. Not sure if I like DNG file and if there is any loss from converting. JPGS work fine. Love the Camera, shoots great photos. Does anyone know if Apple or another program that will convert into a Raw format from the Canon that iPhoto will take? Or will I just have to wait for a driver? I can import directly into Photoshop CS3 just fine.

• Photoshop Elements 6.0 locks up deleting pictures from my Canon Digital Rebel XSI

I'm a long time user of Photoshop Elements and have never had one issue with it. I just got a Canon Rebel XSi and when I connect it to my PC, PE offers to download the pictures. That works fine. The pictures come into PE. Then it offers to delete the pictures from the camera and this is where the trouble begins. I click "Okay" to begin deleting and then the little dialogue box never goes away and the program just stays hung up.
HELP! What is wrong? Why is this locking up?

It's really not a good idea to let elements delete the photos in any case. Your camera has its own directory structure that the computer doesn't fully understand. It's preferable to just reformat your card in the camera or delete the photos directly in the camera, rather than letting a computer do it for you.

• Replace built-in battery for Rebel XSI

Hi, My Canon Rebel XSI just stopped working. Would not turn on at all. I tried re-charging the battery and it still didn't work. A friend said that sometimes the clock battery needs to be taken out and put in again. I tried to find it. My manual says that the battery is built in. What can I do?

Even a bad internal "time/date" battery should not prevent the camera from working off the main/removable/rechargeable battery. (Date and time just need to be reset each and every time the camera is turned on... Tho it probably can be used without setting them, in which case the info in images would be wrong.)
The cameras that have a non-replaceable "date/time" battery seem to use one that gets recharged by the main battery each time it's used.
As you have already been advised, most likely you just need a new main battery, though a failing charger is another possibility.
However, has the camera been sitting a long time unused? I have seen batteries go so dead, that you need to run them through a half dozen or more charge/discharge cycles before they come back up to full power. First time charged, the camera might not come on at all or might turn off in seconds. 2nd or later charges each power up the camera a little longer, until finally it works more normally. I don't use the LP-E5 batteries, so am not sure if they do this the way some other batteries do.
Camera's die for other reasons, too. It would be great if you could borrow a known-good LP-E5 battery from a friend to try, before going out and buying new.

• Canon EOS Rebel XSi Software update won't install in Snow Leopard

I tried to install an update to Canon's EOS Rebel XSi camera software using downloaded images from the Canon website. Image loads, but when I start the installer I receive the error message "Don't have enough privileges to install. Log in as administrator and try again." I am logged in as the administrator and have no issues loading other programs or program updates. I tried installing the same software from DVD with the same results. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm new to the discussion thing and didn't update the entire profile from my last visit. I'm using a Mac Pro and am more concerned about not being able to install/update software because the program doesn't think I have admin privileges. I found the privilege thread in this section so that's where I posted the question.
I know the Canon software works in Snow Leopard because it's running on my laptop.
I'll try the Picasa software option you suggest.

When I try to open the EOS digital solution disk ver 24.1 for my new Canon Rebel T3i camera on my Mac 10.5.8 a notice "this software is not supported by the CPU you are using" comes up
You need to contact Canon - or read the software specs - it sounds like the software you got form them is not supported by your computer
Do I need this software?
Probably not - exactly what about it do you want?
Can I just download the pictures to my Mac without using the Canon software?
Probably - if you are shooting JPEG - launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto preferences set action when a camera is connected to launch iPhoto and connect your camera - iPhoto should launch and you should be able to import
Some cameras need to be set to mass storage mode - read your camera manual for details and procedures
If you are using RAW then your camera needs to be on this list and you need the versions of software noted - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757 - for older OS versions you can use google to find the list of supported cameras
