Compatible video camera with imovie

Does anyone know what video camera are or are not compatible with imovie. I looking at purchases a new Sony HDD(hard drive) video recorder but read that some are not compatible with imovie. I have a mac book.

iMovie 7 allows over 100 more camera file formats and connections than any previous version.
Most hard drive storage cameras record to MPEG-2 format which is now supported in version 7.

  • Most compatable video camera with iMovie 09 ?

    Please help !
I love iMovie but was very disappointed using it with my Sony Handycam - apparently they did not speak to each other !! I used Steve Mullen's book and still didn't have any luck so I sold my camera ! Now I am hoping that Santa will bring me a new video camera and I need to tell him which is the best one for my needs. The JVC GZ-HD300 has been suggested and I have checked the compatibility on the Apple register and cannot even see it listed. I would like some true advice from real people please - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My main requirements in purchasing camera are recording in HD, HDD storage and memory card back up. Thanks

You have euro camcorders I don't know. Assuming the sr8 is our sr7 -- I havent heard anything bad. But, if you shoot where there is loud sounds the issues are:
    1) is the mic itself overloaded?
    2) does the mic overload the camcorder circuit before the gain control?
    3) if the answers are NO, then IF one could adjust camcorder gain -- then that is the solution. But, if the either 1 or 2 is true, then being able to adjust gain will not help.
Seems like the Sony suffers from 1 or 2 because if it didn't you would have already adjusted the Sony gain -- or the Sony has no gain control.
If you want to keep using the Sony you might try an external mic.
Mic output levels typically range from –40dB to -60dBu. (Bigger negative values are softer than smaller negative values.) You want a mic with less output than the built-in Sony mic. But, since you don't have its spec., it's hard to shop for a different one.
That leaves trial and error, or trying out different camcorders. Since you know at least one Canon camcorder works, I would start with Canon. I'd look for one with an external mic input AND an adjustable level. If not a level control -- a menu item to switch in "attenuation."
PS1: check if your Sony has a menu item to switch in "attenuation."
PS2: This is a wonderful example of how in 90% of the talk about camcorders, audio is never mentioned. Yet, if you talk with pros they spend more $ on mics -- often buying several -- than they do on their camcorder. In the situations you shoot at -- audio is more of a worry than video. You are recording VERY loud sounds that can overload anything but a really good mic. (Or, if the mic works -- it may out out a bigger signal than a camcorder can accept.) Which makes me wonder about buying a mic mixer and some good mics rather than a new camcorder. This would be a one time investment. In fact, you could also buy one of these stereo mic-mixer-digital recorders. Record to SD card AND pass a signal to one camcorder. It also opens the door to recording bands. Just a passing thought.

  • How can I connect a Sony DCR-PC110 video camera with iMovie and import my videos?

How can I connect my Sony video camera DCR-PC110 with iMovie in order to import my old videos?

    Hi
This Camera has three types of ports.
    - Analog-out
    - USB
    - I.Link = FireWire = IEEE1394 = Digital in/out = DV-terminal
And Your Camera only can send Photos via the USB-connection - NO VIDEO.
So You Must get a FireWire Cable and eventually a ThunderBolt/FireWire converter Cable to get Import to work.
There are no real way around this.

  • FCP 7 compatible video camera ?

Interested in knowing the most compatible video cameras with FCP7 ?

we can go back and forth on this at a semantic level:
So was it the footage and codec that were incompatible?
Or are we talking about machine control? (the inability of the computer to connect to the device, in this case a camera, and control it via rs 422 or firewire?
Or is it AVCHD which is incompatible.
There are a number of codecs and formats that are not "native," to Final Cut, or any of the editing systems. In which case a rather large number of consumer level cameras will have to considered incompatible, as well as a number of professional devices. I really believe that it's a matter of workflow: there are some that work and some that do not. There are definitely incompatible workflows. These do not, it is my belief, condemn the cameras involved to the status of incompatible and therefore not useable. Incompatible is a highly charged term in my estimation.

  • List of compatible video cameras and codecs for iMovie 1.2.2 (iOS)?

Is there any official or unofficial list of compatible video cameras and video formats/codes published by anyone?
By the way, I successfully managed to import .mov (motion jpeg) from Panasonic DMC-FT1 to iMovie for iOS5. The AVCHD setting (.mts) does not work however.

Not that I've ever found. I tried to research on the Apple site before I bought it but found nothing.
I will say that SD cards are pretty universally compatible and I've not had an issue plugging htem into my iPad. So if your camera has an SD card, you should be good to go, and you can sync without running down the battery on your camera (I honestly never sync my camera with its cable since it does little more than kill the battery, I always do it just with the card, but everyone likes doing things differently)
What might be more helpful, search your camera manufacturer's information. It might be easier to find your camera company saying it's compatible iwth the CCK than it is to find a list of all cameras. Or maybe you can post your camera model here and maybe someone else has the same model and can tell you.

  • Setting up video camera with iDVD

I am very new to iDVD so please forgive me. I have read the manuals and what they don't tell you is how you go about linking up your video camera with your mac.
I have an old Mini DV JVC video camera (one of the first digital cameras available). Do I need to buy some sort of cable to link it to my iBook (as it only has audio and video cables and scart adpater). Also, do I need some extra software in order to import footage to my iBook from the mini DVs on my camera to allow me to use the files in iDVD?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I no longer have my video camera handbook.

    Sparkley,
Try going to JVC's website, and see if you can get a new manual.
Odds are you need a firewire cable, and many camcorders do not come with them. Most use a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire (also called 1394 or iLink) cable. Be sure NOT to get a USB cable, it won't work.
Check and see if there is a small port labeled "DV" on the JVC somewhere.
As long as your camera is "DV", you should need any other hardware (besides the cable) or software outside of iLife (iMovie/iDVD). I recommend that you use iMovie to start for importing - I'm not a fan of "OneStep" in iDVD.

    Hi,
Are you talking about your computer which has no firewire port ? If YES you can have one of two options:
    (a) Use FCI - Firewire card like this (preferred)
    You can buy from this:

Below is an image of what my screen looks like when I try to drag the video across to my iPod:

You can only sync with one iTunes library. If you sync with another one the iPod will be erased and its contents replaced with what is in the library of the second computer.
However, you can manage music among multiple computers. See:

  • Best Affordable Reliable Video Camera for imovie

Does anyone have suggestions for the most affordable and reliable video camera for imovie? I have tried to use an older model Samsung (w/mini-dvd), but, at best the uploads are 'quirky'!

    Hi Sheila,
You still need to buy a miniDV camcorder if you want to capture your video into iMovie, without going through some conversion software, which will cause loss of quality of your image. Then just burn it to DVD, although the editing process can be a whole lot of fun, plus you can add music to your movie, if wanted.
Check out the Panasonic line of miniDV cams and for lots of helpful info on all Panny cams, go to the following website. I don't work for Panasonic, by the way, just the proud owner of a superb GS-500 (discontinued- sorry).

  • QuickTime compatible video camera?

In frustration with Apple's dropping of the iSight Cameras and no word of a replacement, I looked desperately for a web-cam solution for my PowerBook 15 and my Mac Mini.
I will be working away from home and the ability to video chat with the family will be wonderful, IF I can find a substitute camera that will WORK with the Mac's. My MacBook allows the family to see me in all the methods we have tried, but we need to "turn the camera's on them" so to speak.
In some forum (here? TUAW?) I read that a digital video camera with firewire and "QuickTime" compatibility will be a great substitute, but what is meant by QuickTime compatibility? I have a new Panasonic video camera, and wonder if it will work.

    Hi BrianDubya,
Any Firewire DV output (6 pin to 6pin) Camcorder
    Any Firewire Web cam
Any USB cam that has Mac drivers and this Utility

The chances are that any USB cam is going to have

    I love Macs.
I came in from out of town and tried all three of my computers, 2 PowerPCs Macs and one Intel MacBook with the video camera and all I have to do is plug the camera in.
Bada Bing!! The Panasonic PV-GS250 works everytime with Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and iChat.
After the 2-1/2 hours I spent "connecting" a new HP Laptop and new HP printer and getting it communicating and on-line (THAT's TWO and A HALF HOURS!!) I am glad I discovered Apple Inc products.
Thannks for your help in this!

  • I an trying to do video editing with iMovie 11  9.0.8, i have no sound. OS X Lion 10.7.5 is my operating system any suggestions Please.

I am trying to do video editing with iMovie 11  9.0.8 .  I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5   I have no sound, any suggestions please.

This seems to have fixed the issue: on your desktop, hold down the [OPT] key and click on "Go" in the menu bar; holding down the [OPT] click on Library, find Preferences, and then delete all the files that start with "com.apple.itunes.XXXX.plist" where the "XXX" is whatever other things may exist - as long as they end in "plist". From my experience, preference files are rebuilt by the system after the next restart, so you have very little worry of losing any important data; the worst that could happen )and NOT in this instance, but for other plist files) is that you may have to reset the application "preferences" again when you next start it up, to act or appear in a "preferred" customized way for you.
Once you delete the .plist files, empty the Trash, and either log out or restart the computer. Once you're back up and operational, start iTunes and your iDevices should reappear in the sidebar (if that's open) and/or at the top of the screen (if that view is enabled).
Hope that helps. It definitely fixed my problem!
