Compatible video cameras

Recently I enjoyed taking my old 8mm video movies and editing them on my iMac G5 als. Shortly, a bunch of our friends will get a "favorite cat clips" video chronicling 12 years of our feline friends. Don't mean to go astray of this "iMAC Use" forum, but everyone who has seen this iMovie iDVD DVD is impressed with how sophisticated it looks. This positive Apple experience has rekindled my interest in making home videos (ok, I admit to loving the attention).
What would a good guide be for identifying video cameras that work well with OSx? I also would like to know if USB is the way to go for connecting or should one hold out for a Firewire device?
BTW, I transferred my 8mm videos from DVDs which they were been burned to previously. This process worked pretty well using DVDxDV. But am not plugging that program, there may be others out there as good or better.
Also, I used an external USB DVD burner (I love having two DVD drives). iMovie and iDVD had no problem recognizing this external device.
I posted to this usage forum thinking it would attract more viewers/answers on what is basically a hardware question.

Firewire seems the way to go after further investigation.

  • List of compatible video cameras and codecs for iMovie 1.2.2 (iOS)?

Is there any official or unofficial list of compatible video cameras and video formats/codes published by anyone?
By the way, I successfully managed to import .mov (motion jpeg) from Panasonic DMC-FT1 to iMovie for iOS5. The AVCHD setting (.mts) does not work however.

Not that I've ever found. I tried to research on the Apple site before I bought it but found nothing.
I will say that SD cards are pretty universally compatible and I've not had an issue plugging htem into my iPad. So if your camera has an SD card, you should be good to go, and you can sync without running down the battery on your camera (I honestly never sync my camera with its cable since it does little more than kill the battery, I always do it just with the card, but everyone likes doing things differently)
What might be more helpful, search your camera manufacturer's information. It might be easier to find your camera company saying it's compatible iwth the CCK than it is to find a list of all cameras. Or maybe you can post your camera model here and maybe someone else has the same model and can tell you.

  • FCP 7 compatible video camera ?

Interested in knowing the most compatible video cameras with FCP7 ?

we can go back and forth on this at a semantic level:
So was it the footage and codec that were incompatible?
Or are we talking about machine control? (the inability of the computer to connect to the device, in this case a camera, and control it via rs 422 or firewire?
Or is it AVCHD which is incompatible.
There are a number of codecs and formats that are not "native," to Final Cut, or any of the editing systems. In which case a rather large number of consumer level cameras will have to considered incompatible, as well as a number of professional devices. I really believe that it's a matter of workflow: there are some that work and some that do not. There are definitely incompatible workflows. These do not, it is my belief, condemn the cameras involved to the status of incompatible and therefore not useable. Incompatible is a highly charged term in my estimation.

  • Compatible video camera with imovie

Does anyone know what video camera are or are not compatible with imovie. I looking at purchases a new Sony HDD(hard drive) video recorder but read that some are not compatible with imovie. I have a mac book.

iMovie 7 allows over 100 more camera file formats and connections than any previous version.
Most hard drive storage cameras record to MPEG-2 format which is now supported in version 7.

  • QuickTime compatible video camera?

In frustration with Apple's dropping of the iSight Cameras and no word of a replacement, I looked desperately for a web-cam solution for my PowerBook 15 and my Mac Mini.
I will be working away from home and the ability to video chat with the family will be wonderful, IF I can find a substitute camera that will WORK with the Mac's. My MacBook allows the family to see me in all the methods we have tried, but we need to "turn the camera's on them" so to speak.
In some forum (here? TUAW?) I read that a digital video camera with firewire and "QuickTime" compatibility will be a great substitute, but what is meant by QuickTime compatibility? I have a new Panasonic video camera, and wonder if it will work.

    Hi BrianDubya,
Any Firewire DV output (6 pin to 6pin) Camcorder
    Any Firewire Web cam
Any USB cam that has Mac drivers and this Utility

The chances are that any USB cam is going to have
Windows drivers (if you need them for a Intel)

    I love Macs.
I came in from out of town and tried all three of my computers, 2 PowerPCs Macs and one Intel MacBook with the video camera and all I have to do is plug the camera in.
Bada Bing!! The Panasonic PV-GS250 works everytime with Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and iChat.
After the 2-1/2 hours I spent "connecting" a new HP Laptop and new HP printer and getting it communicating and on-line (THAT's TWO and A HALF HOURS!!) I am glad I discovered Apple Inc products.
Thannks for your help in this!

Firewire or USB 2.0 will be fine, look for 'Mac/OSX/Univeral Binary' if the bundle has software included.

  • Looking for a sports video camera that is compatible with the mac

Looking for a video camera that can record sports well and is also compatible with the mac. I've been using iMovie to edit videos for a highlight reel of my highschool soccer games that I coach.

I like Sony HD MiniDV (HDV) Handycam Camcorder - HDRFX1000, but I have also used several older Sony (DCR-TRV17 and DCR-TRV70) and Canon (VIXIA HV20, VIXIA HV30, and VIXIA HV40) tape-based Firewire-equipped camcorders with good results.
I prefer tape-based Firewire-equipped cameras because of their IEEE 1394 transfer speed, compatibility with iMovie HD, and ability to serve as the source recording directly into iMovie when desired.  If none of these characteristics is important to you, other Mac-compatible camcorders with suitable zoom ranges and lens speeds for the light levels you encounter should also do nicely for recording at your games.
You do not say which iMovie version you are using, but you can find about known compatible camcorders by searching for the info in a search like this one.

  • Compatible digital video camera

hello, i own 2 mac laptops and i'm interested in buying a video camera. i have had a difficult time finding a product that is compatible with mac. can you recomend a good quality video camera that works well with imovie? i already have a great still image digital camera, so i basically need something to do great videos. Please help. Thanks.

I can recommend Canon products. I've used a GL2, which is a higher end camera, to feed a PB, and it works just fine. Basically, you want a camera that supports Firewire output (as opposed to USB only), and is tape-based, ie mini DV. The DVD-based camera's I've seen tend to have USB-only output.

  • Can recommend a slim/mini video camera that is compatible with FCE ?

    I have some technical problem.
My video camera is too big in size to film in between spaces. My friend has build a model of a few cluster of flats. He wants me to help him film the spaces between the flats from the bird's eye perspective. By bird's eye perspective, he meant to say he wants me to record what the bird can see if the bird fly surrounding the flats & between the flats & then make turns surrounding the buildings.
My present video is too bulky to squeeze into those small models.
I think the only way is to purchase a video camera that is so slim like a shape if pencil so that it can go in between the blocks.
Where can I buy this ? Will this type of video (if exist) records video in good quality & compatible with FCE4 ?
    Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You should look in Radio-Controled airplane model equipment. There are mini camera that mount on the model and broadcast the video on the air to a receiver that can be connected to a camcorder. You can connect them on any VCR
    See example:

  • Digital video camera compatible list

hi, i cant seem to find the list here for compatible digital video cameras with mac.
i really like the JVC hard drives, but have read here there is a loss of quality, and they are hard to work with IDVD?????
    thank you

    general rule:
    any firewire connected, miniDV
camcorder has access to the simplicity & convenience
    of the iApps...
This is not absolutely correct. I have personally suffered a great embarassment when I tried to showcase iMovie HD on my PowerBook G4 17" to a colleague who had a couple years old Samsung MiniDV camera with him that day. iMovie wouldn't even recognised it. And he uses it with Adobe Premiere on a PC with no problems. We then tried some JVC camera lying around and it worked perfectly. Being PC user he took it for granted but I was really shocked.
I have immediately Googled for that camera model and, apparently, it is incompatible with iMovie at all. I can't remember the model now but if you search the net for it you'll find out.
Since that time I am more cautious about making bold statements.

  • What video cameras are compatible with Final Cut Express?

I live in Japan and was thinking of buying a Victor " Full High Definition" video camera (1920x1080). The only thing I was warned about by the salesperson is that unless I have a Blue-Ray DVD recorder/player, I will never be able to enjoy true Full HD after burning my video to a DVD. I guess regular DVD recorders/players can't support it yet.
I have searched to find a page that tells me what video camera is compatible with my iMac G5, but no luck. Any ideas on how to find out before buying a video camera? I would appreciate anyone's advice.
    Thanks, Larry in Japan

You want to stay away from recordable-DVD and hard-disk camcorders,
    ...snip...
Hope you don't mind me asking why? - As long as they've got a F/W connector how does the source media make any difference? - In fact, I would think that shuttling around would be faster with HD's or DVD's.....
I also believe the salesperson was trying to say that he's going to need a BluRay deck in order to be able to view his HD material on an appropriately equipped TV - Which is correct, no?
Thanks in advance for any comments,
    Cheers,

  • Video camera compatible with macbook pro

Can anyone recommend a mid-priced video camera that is compatible with a macbook pro? Will be used for family videos with iMovie.

Visit the online Apple Store and any online store that sells Mac products.  You will see a lot of goodies to choose from depending on how much you want to spend.
I personally have a Kodak EasyShare camera which I purchased from MacMall.

  • What video cameras are compatible with mac without having to download software

What video cameras are compatible with mac computers without having to download software?

Did you try connecting your camera to the computer USB port via the supplied USB interface cable instead of plugging in the SD card directly?
No driver is needed to connect your computer to your camera.
    http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/consumer_camcorders/consu mer_camcorders/vixia_hf_r52#DriversAndSoftware
Regardless of whether or not you 'like' downloading and installing software on your computer, Canon DOES HAVE software available for your specific camera and it IS compatible with recent versions of the Mac OS X operating system. Maybe try that instead of whining here about it not being compatible.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use iMovie. There's an iMovie Support Community where everybody uses iMovie. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie
