Compilation folder - what is it?

Windows 7
iTunes 9
I just created a new Library and copied my albums into iTunes.
When I go to the iTunes Media folder in the C drive, then to the Music folder I see most of my albums. But some ended up in the sub folder called compilations.
Itunes itself is organized fine, but any way to clean up the Music folder in the C drive?

It's a folder that holds your compilation albums; such as those with many different artists like movie soundtracks or a collection from many different albums by the same artist like a greatest hits album. Don't worry about it...I'm the most OCD person in existence and after wasting a lot of time on that folder, I let it be and all is fine with how the albums display in iTunes.

  • Remove duplicates in "Compilations" folder

I have found a lot of duplicate files in the ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Compilations folder. Most of the discussions I have found ignore files in the Compilations folder. Are there any utilities to handle this chore, I have over 4,000 songs.
Also what is the function of the Compilations folder? I notice there is a scheme for naming files, e.g.
    X.m4a X 1.m4a X 2.m4a
Can I assume that the X.m4a version is the one used to link to a playlist?

It appears that if a song appears in both the Music Library and in the Compilations folder, the song in the Compilations folder can be moved to Trash to save space.

  • ITunes and Compilations Folder

When I am importing songs into my Library, I noticed that sometimes iTunes will put the album in a folder with the author's name and sometimes it will put it into a folder called Compilations. In order to keep my songs orderly, I will move the album from Compilations folder to the singer's folder, but then it will not play on iTunes nor can I transfer it to my iPod. Does anyone know why this happens, and what I can do about it?
    Thanks.

sometimes it will put it into a folder called Compilations.
Because the CD is marked a a Compilation.

Since you moved it, iTunes does not know where it is so it cannot play it or sync it.
You should not move anything in the iTunes folder. Let iTunes do it.
In iTunes, selct teh songs/albums, right click - get info.
Click the Options tab and uncheck *Part of compilation*.

  • How can I keep Itunes from wanting to put my music cd in the compilations folder.  Even a 2 disc set sometimes itunes will place one cd in a folder of the name of the band and the other disc in the compilations folder under the name of the cd

Two issues.  The first one is that when I upload some music cd's into my itunes library, itunes wants to place the songs in a compilations folder.  Sometimes this occurs even with a 2 or 3 cd set.  One CD will be filed under the artists name and the disc 2 may be filed in the compilations folder and listed by the name of the cd and not the artist.
2nd issue is that sometimes cd's are similiar, but with different artists such as 20th century Hits of Neil Young.  The CD is filed in the compilations folder.  Than I upload the 20th century Hits of Tanya Tucker and the songs go into the same folder with Neil Young.  The don't even mix as one is county and the other is rock.
I have moved these CD's out of the compilations folder and moved them in with the other cd's by the same artist, but Itunes keeps moving them back into the compilations folder.
    Is there a fix

Generally setting a common Album title and Album Artist will fix things.
For compilations that aren't, select all tracks, Get Info, and on the option tab set Part of a Compilation to No. If it already says No tick the box alongside, then click OK.
For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.

I have a ? on a file folder what does it mean?

    OK.
Folders can be added to the header of a Finder window simply by dragging them there; they are a special kind of alias, pointing to the originsl.
If the original is removed, the alias is then orphaned, The question mark indicates the OS can't find the original.
To remove it, hold down the Command key and drag it out of the window's header.

    Hi @saharhamdastpour -
    I'm Dan from Viber.
Unfortunately Viber does not officially support Mac OS 10.6.8 - Viber is compatible with Mac versions 10.7 and above.
Note that you can find the list of supported platforms and OS versions here: http://helpme.viber.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/472/0/supported-platforms
If it is your wish, upgrading your Mac OS version should solve the problem and allow you to install and enjoy Viber.
    Thanks,

  • Don't want compilations folder

    Hello -
How can I get iTunes to stop creating a compilations folder for my cds? These are not cds with various artists. I want the artist to have their own folder.
Another question: if I import 2 different cds by the same artist will it create 2 separate artist folders or will it add the 2nd album in the same folder (which I'd prefer).
    Thanks in advance,
    Wy

If the CDs are being incorrectly identified as compilations then change the information against them either before or after you import the CD and the album will go into the Artist folder. iTunes gets the information on the CD from an online database, quite often this will identify greatest hits packages or single artist best of collections as compilations. You can change the compilation marker before you import and then the songs will go into the artist folder. Insert your CD and when it shows in iTunes click on the first song then go to Edit>Select all. Right click on the selection and choose Get Info. You'll get a message asking if you want to edit multiple items, say yes. If you are using iTunes 8 in the box that opens go to the Options tab and change "part of a compilation" to no and choose OK. (In iTunes 7, the compilations setting is at the bottom of the multi-item page). Import the CD and the tracks will go to the correct artist folder.
To change the marker on albums already imported click on the first track to highlight it, hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight all the songs in between and follow the instructions above to change the info.
If you import more than one album bay an artist each album will be in it's own folder inside the artist folder.

  • Best strategy to deal with Compilations folder

    Hello,
I just moved my music folder to an external USB drive and I went back into preferences and used the Advanced tab to change the location of the folder. iTunes worked for a while and it produced 263 folders in the Compilations folder full of single song folders.
Now I can attest to the fact that I always checked not part of a compilation checkbox and stated No in the drop down, each and every time I ripped a CD.
How do I revert all of these songs in the folders that they belong into?
    Thanks for any help.

  • "Compilations" folder

When I use "Add Folder" to add a music folder to the iTunes library, iTunes moves the whole folder to a folder it created called "Compilations." I thought it was supposed to leave the folder in its original location and just add "pointers" to the music files. How can I stop iTunes from doing this? Thanks, BZ
    Dell   Windows Vista

You can't (normally) lose music by changing the "Part of a Compilation" tag from Yes to No. So either you did something else or in addition that causes the music to get lost, or you are not clearly stating what you mean by "lost some music" (e.g. do they still show up in iTunes but you can not find the tracks in your folders? Did they disappear from the iTunes library? etc.).

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • 32GB "null" file in User folder- what is it?

I decided to see what was using the majority of my disk to free some space, and found this. Can it be deleted?

That file belongs in the system /bin folder. If you have a copy of it in your home folder, you can delete it, at least as far as the system is concerned. Don't delete the original or anything else in /bin.

  • SC info folder, what is it?

Unable to view rented movies, so an iTunes representative told me the problem might be solved by deleting the SC info folder. It took a while to find it but I did. And now I'm a little bit leery, I don't know what the significance of that folder is, before I go ahead and delete it. Does anybody know if it would cause any problems to the iTunes library. Thanks in events to whoever replies.

It holds the authorization for the entire PC. Your itunes has a limit of 5 PCs authorized at one time.
And it got seriously messed with in iTunes v7 and v8, people not being able to play files they purchased.
You can't just log into a different Windows account and authorize a new library. That is the whole authorization foe the entire PC.
Go look at a thread named "Billing Loop", but if you're at v8 and can't play a new free downlaod of the week, you need to contact Apple.
