Compiling custom kernel

Hello,
what are the minimal requirements for a custom kernel to run arch linux?

Just use the .config-file from arch-linux, and do a circle:
1. Deselect Options you think you don't need
2. Compile Kernel
3. Install Kernel
4. Boot into Kernel
5. If everything works good, go back to one and deselect more options. If not, you deselected one option you needed.

    As far as I can see it seems that your patches are actually doing something to sched_bfs.c, so it's probably their fault.  eldragon's advice could verify that.

  • Custom kernel breaks bootlogd - but why?

    I have an arch system which works fine when booting a standard kernel, but using my custom kernel all boot messages cease after it launches bootlogd from /etc/rc.sysinit. The file /var/log/boot is created as normal, and has all of the output from sysinit and rc.multi you'd expect to see, and no errors show up there or in any other log file which would explain why bootlogd fails to write to the console. Before and after bootlogd, the console behavior is perfectly normal. I have already made sure to enable the most relevant-looking kernel config options, including:
    CONFIG_VT=y
    CONFIG_CONSOLE_TRANSLATIONS=y
    CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y
    CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE=y
    CONFIG_VT_HW_CONSOLE_BINDING=y
    CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
    CONFIG_DEVPTS_MULTIPLE_INSTANCES=y
    CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS=y
    CONFIG_LEGACY_PTY_COUNT=256
    CONFIG_TTY_PRINTK=y
    CONFIG_HVC_DRIVER=y
    CONFIG_HVC_IRQ=y
    CONFIG_HVC_XEN=y
    The full kernel config is here. Any advice? Thanks!

    Maybe, but the last couple of days I have had a lot troubles getting a right setup for initcpio.
    Just workout what modules you need for filesystem and ide/sata then you should be able to set those to MODULES="" in mkinitcpio.conf.  More complicated configurations will need more effort.
    I have tried that, but I can't boot nevertheless. I can't even use the 'autodetect'  hook.

    Hello,
    I'm kind of a noob and am trying to get follow the directions from the Nvidia wiki on installing on a custom kernel.  I'm trying to use the abs method to install on kernel26rt version 2.6.33rt.  I followed directions exactly and am getting an error that I didn't find on any other posts.  Can you please take a look?  Here is my terminal:

  • Strange error compiling a custom kernel...

    Here is the error i get when compiling a custom kernel (i tried both 2.6.22 from core and 2.6.23 from testing):
    init/built-in.o: In function 'start_kernel':
    (.init.text.0x836): undefined reference to 'early_populated_rootfs'
    make: *** [.tmp_vmlinuz1] Error 1
    i have no idea of what it the problem, the config file it's the same i've used for all my 2.6.22 kernels, any idea?
    Thank you.

    This kind of error is when you forget to add a source file to gcc comand line during compilation. I think that problem might be in one of broken Makefiles in kernel tree. Maybe some patch messed with them. Try to download fresh kernel sources.

  • Custom kernel manually compile nvidia module

    I have a working custom kernel.Now when i compile the standard NVIDIA....run package the compilation begins.However when i first extract the nvidia package to a source dir and try from then on to compile i get an error message saying i haven't compiled a kernel or can't find the kernel headers.
    Any hint about what i could do next?

    Do you have kernel headers for your custom kernel?  Check if your kernel build script has the following near the end:

    eval "package_${_p}() {
    _package${_p#${pkgbase}}
    done
    I downloaded the 3.8.2 vanilla kernel and patched it with grsecurity. The kernel install was traditional make && make modules_install ....
    Are header files required when you have a full source tree btw?

  • Custom kernel compilation with abs..

    Been trying out custom kernel compilation with abs, since i only know the regular make menuconfig style, thought that this would be a good thing to learn.
    here is my kernel pkgbuild (showing only the part that i changed):
    # Contributor: dibblethewrecker <dibblethewrecker>
    pkgname=kernel26
    pkgver=2.6.17.13
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="The Linux Kernel 2.6.x.y and modules (IDE support), built with ... patchset"
    url="http://www.kernel.org"
    depends=('module-init-tools')
    install=kernel26.install
    ##### if you are using a single patch from a patchset you can add the name, without it's extention, below
    patch=2.6.18-rc6-mm2
    ##### add the names of any patches to this section, ensure you have the correct extentions!
    source=($patch.bz2 config ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-$pkgver.tar.bz2 )
    I want to install the 2.6.18-rc6-mm2, so i downloaded that patch and put it in the same folder as PKGBUILD.
    I copied kernel26.install and put it in the same folder as the PKGBUILD.
    when running makepkg it asks for a config file.. So i copied the config file in /var/abs/kernels/kernel26/. But this will build with an old config file.. how can i as when doing the manual way, do a make menuconfig and enter the settings i want for this kernel??
    thanks

    I'd say it does too, and I think the problem is here:
    jinn wrote:I copied kernel26.install and put it in the same folder as the PKGBUILD.
    Did you just copy the install script, or did you edit it to create an image with a unique name? The script is hardcoded to create an image called kernel26.img i.e. the image name required by the stock kernel, so if you ran it as it is, you have overwritten the images for your stock kernel with images for your new kernel.
    You might still be able to boot your new kernel with kernel26-fallback.img, but if not you will have to boot your stock kernel using the initrd image, which will have been unaffected.
    Once your system is running again, you need to regenerate the kernel26 images using mkinitcpio, and then you can start debugging the problem with your new kernel.
    Of course, if you've already edited kernel26.install for your new kernel, ignore the above, and I'll start again.

  • [solved] Compiling A Custom Kernel W/ Same Config

    I apologize in advance if this is repetitive but i am just a little confused with a few questions.
    What i want to do is be able to pretty much just have the ability to add a module or compile somthing on top of the default linux
    kernel. I guess the only way to do that is to recompile a linux kernel with this guide:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … ild_System
    My questions:
    In the guide it says to change PKGBUILD and change:
    # pkgname=linux-custom       # Build kernel with a different name
    to
    pkgname=linux-test
    I understand that. it also says to disable conflicts if you want two kernels.
    is that just comenting "provides" , "conflicts" and "replaces"
    like:
    #next lines give you problems with nvidia drivers which depend on kernel
    #provides=('kernel26')
    #conflicts=('kernel26')
    #replaces=('kernel26'
    Also when i select or uncomment menuconfig and lets say not change anything at all is that going to be the same configuration as it would be if i were to install the kernel with pacman. It should be the same thing i have right now? right?
    So i can say add framebuffer support or something like that and compile and install and have the exact same kernel now plus FB support.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    1.
    What i want to do is be able to pretty much just have the ability to add a module or compile somthing on top of the default linux kernel.
    You would need linux-headers to do that like this (more or less):
    cd your-src/kernel
    make SYSSRC=/lib/modules/${current-kernel-version}/build module
    If you want to customize your kernel further, change its config options, modify default features, etc., then you need to recompile it entirely as described in the Wiki.
    2.
    is that just comenting "provides" , "conflicts" and "replaces"
    Yes. You also need to create a custom linux-${your-custom-kernel-name}.preset in order to generate initramfs. Of course, you can as well use the default name and change the settings in the config file (via menuconfig, nconfig or whatever tool you choose the achieve this). Then nothing has to be changed as all the add-ons will follow the naming convention reserved for the default kernel.
    3.
    Also when i select or uncomment menuconfig and lets say not change anything at all is that going to be the same configuration as it would be if i were to install the kernel with pacman?
    Yes.
    4.
    So i can say add framebuffer support or something like that and compile and install and have the exact same kernel now plus FB support.
    Basically yes, though I'm wondering for which video board you need extra FB support...

  • Some questions b4 i try to compile my first custom kernel

    Hi all, i'm tempted to try and configure my own custom kernel but i need to ask a few questions before i try...
    http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … ompilation
    the first 5 instructions on this wiki were to do this:
    # cd /usr/src
    # mv linux-2.x.x linux-2.x.x.arch
    # mv /lib/modules/linux-2.x.x /lib/modules/linux-2.x.x.arch
    # mv /boot/vmlinuz2x vmlinuz-2.x.x.arch
    # mv /boot/System.map2x System.map-2.x.x.arch
    # mv /boot/kconfig2x /boot/kconfig-2.x.x.arch
    if i just want to compile a new, seperate kernel from my current one, why would i need to do this? if i followed these 5 commands, i wont be able to boot up back into my old kernel unless i use a rescue disk to copy the files back into their original locations, not?
    also, what other steps would i have to take to ensure that i dont accidentally overwrite my old kernel? Or other things i should look out for, for a first timer

    [LONG POST]
    There are two different kinds of people : those who prefer the /usr/src way, and those who use dibble's PKGBUILD.
    To my opinion, someone who's never compiled a kernel should first try to do it the manual way. What is PKGBUILD for if you don't understand what's in ?
    pacman -R kernel26
    cd /usr/src
    wget ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.11.8.tar.bz2
    tar -xvjf ./linux-2.6.11.8.tar.bz2
    ln -s linux-2.6.11.8 linux
    cd linux
    make menuconfig # some tips below
    make && make modules_install
    # Don't do a make install
    cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/linux
    cp System.map /boot
    cp .config /boot
    nano -w /boot/grub/menu.lst
    # I assume your / is on /dev/hda2 and /boot is on the same partition
    title Arch Linux [/boot/linux]
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/linux root=/dev/hda2 ro # lapic devfs=nomount
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,2) #Windows on /dev/hda3
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
    If you use lilo :
    nano -w /etc/lilo.conf
    boot=/dev/hda
    prompt
    timeout=100 # =10 seconds
    default=linux
    image=/boot/linux
    label=linux
    read-only
    root=/dev/hda2
    #append="some options like devfs=nomount or lapic"
    other=/dev/hda3
    label=windows
    If you use lilo, DO NOT FORGET to run 'lilo' after editing /etc/lilo.conf.
    Kernel Options
    - Enabling an option generally does not hurt so if you are not sure, enable the option.
    - Compile as modules only what you do not use, for removable devices, and things you would not like to be automatically loaded ( a NIC on a laptop for example)
    - Try googling around to see what modules are needed for some of your exotic hardware if you have to.
    - Know you hardware (run lspci,lsdev, use hwd)
    To answer to what you said, a self-compiled kernel is not that much faster... However, it is surely not bloated anymore since it probes only for the hardware you actually have. Hotplug wont desperately try to load uncorrect modules for hours(and you wont have to blacklist them), and you have the options YOU chose, for example use udev as default.
    Compiling the kernel also enables to patch it for example with reiser4 support(fastest fs on earth), -ck speed improvements, -nitro patch set.
    I suggest you google around and see what patches are available, though I would not do that if you never compiled a kernel.
    To patch :
    cd /usr/src/linux
    patch -p1 < /path/to/xxx-patch.bz2
    Oh, I nearly forgot to say that if you compile the kernel yourself, binary modules provided by pacman do not work anymore. You will have to recompile them too(for example ipw2100, nvidia, etc). This is made easy with ABS.

  • Compiling nvidia driver for custom kernel

    I have a Toshiba M200 tablet PC running Arch Linux (which I love, btw) and it's running fine, including the tablet.
    There's an irritating bug with suspend-to-ram (suspend-to-disk doesn't work with the nvidia driver) where the tablet pen stops working after resume.
    There's a patch slated to be in some future kernel, but I compiled my own with that patch included. It boots fine and all seems to be well with it.
    However, I need to compile the nvidia driver for it, since the binary does not work. So I copy /var/abs/extra/nvidia and modify the PKGBUILD and nvidia.install files per the instructions on this wiki page, and run makepkg -i -c .
    I get a big error message early on, saying
    If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure
    you either have configured kernel sources matching your
    kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
    on your system.
    If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
    you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
    installed on your system. If you specified a separate
    output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
    the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
    directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
    the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
    Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
    kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
    their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
    the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
    *** Unable to determine the target kernel version. ***
    I've checked everything I can think of.
    $ uname -r
    2.6.25-tablet
    ls -l /usr/src shows linux-2.6.25-tablet, and linux is a symlink to it. /lib/modules/2.6.25-tablet/build is also symlinked to the right kernel source tree.
    So I'm out of ideas for why the nvidia makefile can't seem to find the kernel source.
    Thanks in advance.

    @klixon:
    I think that may be the root of the trouble: I compiled the kernel on my desktop (C2D 2.8) rather than my wussy laptop (1.6 Centrino). It installed and ran fine and all that, but I only have the kernel source tree that was included in the package, not the one that really compiled the code. Would simply copying it suffice, or should I rebuild the kernel on my laptop? Also, the PKGBUILD is included below.
    @shazeal:
    I believe this is a subset of the problem I describe above?
    The PKGBUILD, somewhat customized from the nvidia ABS. I don't think any of the changes are overly shocking.
    I've tried dozens of different modifications of it now. The simplest one is just appending '-tablet' to pkgname and _kernver.

  • Missing extramodules in /lib/modules in custom kernel compiling.

    Hello.
    Im totally a newbie when it comes to compiling a kernel.And i have this little thing.
    I follow this guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … ut_ABS.And everything works fine and i do make modules_install.
    But when i look inside /lib/modules i see extramodules-3.1-ARCH from standard kernel there. I missing extramodules for my kernel. Should i not have one for my kernel??
    I wonder if i miss to tick something in make menuconfig and if so where should i look for it??(i must be blind) or is it something else that i do wrong?
    thanks
    freddie

    Look here.
    From what I remember, /usr/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build points to a kernel source which is indeed prepared to build external modules. Prepared in that it it's partially configured which is a requirement for building external modules.
    Vmlinuz is your bootable kernel.

  • [SOLVED] Macbook 2,1 Intel 945GM: no backlight property custom kernel

    Hi,
    I just finished compiling a custom kernel for my Macbook and for the life of me cannot figure out which option enables backlight control. I'm suspecting it might be CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT, but I can't actually find it via 'make menuconfig.' In other words, I can grep it from the raw config, but don't know where it is:
    $ grep -A10 -B10 CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT .config
    CONFIG_FB_CFB_IMAGEBLIT=y
    # CONFIG_FB_CFB_REV_PIXELS_IN_BYTE is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_FILLRECT is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_COPYAREA is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_IMAGEBLIT is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_FOREIGN_ENDIAN is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_FOPS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_WMT_GE_ROPS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SVGALIB is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_MACMODES is not set
    [b]# CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT is not set[/b]
    # CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_TILEBLITTING is not set
    # Frame buffer hardware drivers
    # CONFIG_FB_CIRRUS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_CYBER2000 is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_ARC is not set
    But menuconfig is like this:
    --- Support for frame buffer
    [ ] Enable firmware EDID
    [ ] foreign endianness support --->
    [ ] Video Mode Handling Helpers
    [ ] Tile Blitting Support
    It's hard to reproduce entirely here, but the point is that the config grep returns fb_backlight just above mode helpers/tilebitting, but above those are foreign endianness, and that's not where the backlight setting is.
    The card is the Intel 945GM; on the default Arch kernel I can use xbacklight to adjust brightness. With my custom compiled one, I get "no outputs have backlight property" with xbacklight and, indeed, /sys/class/backlight is empty.
    Would someone kindly tell me which kernel option provides the backlight property for this card?

    I don't see much there to wonder about. CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT only gets triggered if certain drivers are enabled. But I don't have any of those. I'm re-compiling right now with one of them, just for kicks, to see what happens. I have the right LCD backlight options set to match the default. On the ACPI front, we have this:

    Most of that seems about right, and the end stuff is all specific laptop drivers.
    I'll post back when this is done. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that I compiled in i915 and intel_agp vs. having them as modules. Should that make any difference?

  • Optimizing system for best performance/stability and a custom kernel

    I have ArchLinux running on a MacBook 4.1 (early 2008), and it's running very well so far. But I would like to optimize it for best performance and stability (but not at the cost of losing 'graphical interface' quality). I want to compile a custom kernel, and I actually did once, but didn't do it well (and removed it), so I need some help from experts to tell me what should I disable or enable when compiling a custom kernel.
    I will post dmesg and lspci (and rc.conf) here, but if you need any other information, please tell me.
    Thanks.

    This might not help you a lot, but if you want a stable system, try using packages from the repo wherever possible, look at the news before you update your system and don't mess things up (like bad configuration etc.).
    When it comes to performance, you won't gain much by compiling linux by yourself! Just use the linux package from [core] or if you want a bit more performance, install the ck-kernel from
    [repo-ck]
    Server = http://repo-ck.com/$arch
    (this has to go to the bottom of /etc/pacman.conf)
    (use that one which is best for your cpu (in your case this might be the package linux-ck-corex).
    Hmmm, Linux-ck-corex doesn't even load.. I am now trying to install the generic one. Hope it works.
    Edit: I will first try linux-lqx...

  • Custom kernel thoughts?

    so i managed to compile a 2.6.32-rc3 kernel yesterday with the zen patches. i actually spent 2 days compiling over and over again until it worked 100%. the only thing i have a problem with now is the virtual box module, but thats no biggie. but wow, once i started trimming it down, are teh compile times ever nice on my new phenom box. the final config was building inside of 3-4 minutes. this is my first functional custom kernel, all the ones i've done before, always seem to feel slower, or something ends up missing, or they just plain don't work
    but my other concern, i'm not too sure how to rely on these geekbench results. i suppose maybe its possible?
    this is before with the arch kernel, http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/168740
    and after with my kernel, http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/175088
    edit, to add score from arch 2.6.31 kernel. http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view?id=175199
    my other question, i was wondering if anyone who knows this stuff better than I do may have any suggestions for my config, anything that may help performance, or if i have something in there that i don't need. do i need initrd, i was looking into that one, but i wasn't sure, what i read was that if i built in ext2 (boot fs), i could remove initrd. i didn't want to break anything though.

    my other question, i had to enable the ide drivers. i have no IDE on my mobo. i was hoping to keep on sata and the related scsi drivers, but it wouldn't boot at all. i kept getting a kernel panic.....although in my mkinitio hooks, i only had sata, and now its pata and sata....i i removed the ide drivers, and set used scsi and sata hooks, any thoughts on whether it would work or not?

    @vit.
    i have conky setup displaying my cpu speed. and with the phc-k8 driver it shows the cpu speed changing frequently. and the big thing with it as well i believe is that it can handle voltage, im not sure if the powernow module could do voltage or not though, but on my asus board using the atk0110 sensor module with phc-k8 when i check the sensors i can see voltage changes between the available steppings, and not just the -/+3-5%, i see 0.1v increments kind of thing.
    edit// powernow_k8 can change voltages. i just booted into the arch kernel, and the voltages changed there....
    i believe the other thing thats better with the phc-k8 module is that its supposed to be able to handle multiple steppings, as in more than 4, or that it clocks by multiplier. so where for my phenom 955, powernow can run it at 800, 2100, 2500 and 3200. but as far as my understanding goes, phc-k8 is supposed to be able to handle it by multiplier, but with the current cpufreq utils its still using the configuration from the previous module, and when i do cpu-freq info, i still get the same info. ivers maybe its the more cpu specific steppings it doesn't support yet with the k10. as far as i can tell right now, they both seem to work about the same. except i think the phc driver is supposed to be more flexible. to be honest, i think it seems to be a little more responsive, in terms of adjusting frequencies
    here's something to show the voltage change according to frequency. from what i can find, default vcore for the 955 is 1.35v, im reading 1.38 at full speed, could be a give or take depending on bios/sensors/etc, it looks like its in line to me

    now i apologize for the big blurb, and please don't quote me on it, its only my understanding from what i've read so far, i could be terribly wrong, and if i am, i would love to know
    and @ tigtex
    thats what always happened to me too, every time i tried changing the flags for my k8, it always felt slower, i never really did benchmark it though, i should have. this time it seems to have worked for me though. i wish there was a database somewhere that had more info on what cpu options work best and for what application, ie server, general use, performance builds, etc. im sure specifying the cpu architecture isn't always enough unless you enable other options to take advantage of it. i don't know. i'm not the most knowledgeable, i'm still learning.
    i'm still looking for input from the more knowledgeable guys on my kernel config...unless its just that good as it is? i know i couldn't have done that well
