Comping multi-Track multi-take Drums

Hi everyone,
In the last days I recorded a set of drum tracks. I'm looking for a good way to comp them so that a crash that was hit in take 1 can fade out while take 2 is already starting to play. I thought that might be possible to do wit hthe comping feature but I know think I was wrong about that, it obviously wasnt intended to do that.
So I unpacked the comps resultung in multiple tracks with only one channel strip (which is what I want). Unfortunately, only one of the unpacked tracks can be heared when i hit play. The regions on the other tracks are greyed out, also displaying a blue circle on the top left of the region box.
However, when I take the very same region out of the "bin"-box and put it in this second track it works! I could do this every time now but obviously I am quite sure that I'm missing something here. And help is greatly appreciated.

Well, turns out those regions where muted. Who knew you could even do that, I didn't. Thanks anway.
Well, I did! But you answered your own question very quickly, so you didn't need us to tell you about muting... And we didn't have the time to react...
But you are not exactly the first to have stumbled over unintended muting... that default keycommand 'M' (mute/unmute selected region) is just too easy to hit unnoticed, when thumbing the spacebar...

  • Problem with multi take drum tracks not working with group selection editing

    HI All
Ive recently tracked drums into using 7 mics and doing multiple takes layered on top of each other, the 7 takes belong to the same group and i have enabled group editing in the settings.
I think i changed the comp options at the end of the track and as a result audio tracks 1 and 2 edit between takes together fine. I.e. when i choose say take 5 with track it does the same selection for track 2.
Tracks 3-7 work in the same way fine, im just wondering if anyone knows how to get them as a complete group again so that when i choose take 5 for example on the one audio track, it will make the same selection for all of them!
    thanks

    Colin,
I did a multi camera edit of Act 1 of a taped performance and all went well. Moved on to Act 2, which ran longer and each camera needed a tape change. So I matched the clips from each camera on each video track and tried to move on to the sync & then create a multi camera sequence stage of the project. That's when I hit a road block. I could not sync the four video tracks. So I consulted Adobe's on line help and this was all I could find about my predicament:
Note: Adobe Premiere Pro uses an overlay edit when  synchronizing clips. Take care not to overwrite adjacent clips if you have  multiple clips on the same track.
So what was I to do next? I found your post and now know exactly what to do. Thanks for a great explaination and saving me a lot of head scratching.
Why couldn't Adobe explain it as well?
    Thanks,
    Angelo

  • Comping several tracks at once... how can I use quick swipe edit?

    Hi Guys,
We've just recorded a piano over two stereo tracks, now it's comping time.
We don't want to comp the tracks seperately... is there a way to link the two tracks so the swipe-comping we do will be reflected in both?
I'm sure there's an option for this for comping multi-mic drum situations... I just can't find a reference to it anywhere in the manual....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Jim,
Just discovered this! Thanks for the reply though - I had only used grouping for volumes previously, now I've seen all the options that you can include and exclude in a group, it's fantastic!
    Cheers,

  • What do you think of the new multi-takes feature?

So the new multi-take feature seems to be the way it's done in ProTools - they layer on top of one another and you can click on the region to select the appropriate take.
Personally, that had confused me a bit, because things were hidden. I liked seeing everything I had, so I really liked the way Logic worked it, allowing multiple tracks tied to the same audio object. I would then comp takes by separating regions and leaving good takes unmuted. That way I can still see the takes that I didn't use for the comp. Make sense?
I'm curious what you guys think are pros and cons of the two approaches.

After using it for an hour it s totally unusable for me.
When I comp I often have to nudge bits of audio to get the feel right.
You cannot do this at all and also auditioning the takes is also very painful.
So is this for clicktrack-guided single tracks then? Can this be used when you record simultaneous multiple tracks (think orchestra with a main stereo pair, spots on woodwinds and several others - say 12 tracks at once). Then another take of the whole piece (without click means slightly different tempo in places). Then another... Can the comping feature assemble the best pieces from each take like cut/splice a virtual multitrack tape? Or is this feature something more limited?

  • Multi-Take Cycling Audio Missing Revisited...

Apologizes for all the typos in a previous email on the multi-take recording audio missing. I have since done some research and have better terminology to use so I'll restate. I believe this could be a bug and want folks to be aware of it at the very least.
Someone else posted a problem with the "cycle multi-takes" saying that after using pieces of several takes on one track, as done in the instruction video shown in the link below from Apple, his problem was the audio showed up but was not playing at all. I have done the same thing, but the audio just disappeared in 2 out of 10 of my takes, nowhere to be found. It played perfectly while I previewing and deciding what to use, and all takes are still appearing in the drop down list, but when you select them, they are empty. Tried to post a picture of my screen, but can't figure out how to do that!
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/music/garageband08.html#tutorial=multitake
The only thing I did different from the video was to make a new track and copy the multitakes to it, decide what I wanted where and copied it back to the main track after splitting it appropriately.
Thanks to all that offer help on this discussion board!

I believe I have the same problem. When I record multiple takes and then CMND+T to split the track and use different takes, they disappear, re-appear, and sometimes are lost again for good. This is the worst sin a software developer can make--losing a musician's best takes.
I am furious at Apple for this, particularly since Apple Care has consistently claimed ignorance. Apple if you're reading this, you have made a mess of several nights work on several occasions for me. Thanks a lot.

  • Quick swipe comping multiple tracks?

recently upgraded to Logic Studio from logic pro 7...I'm loving the quick swipe comping feature!!
anyone know if there is a way to use the quick swipe comping on multiple tracks simultaneously? for example, comping multi-track drums?
I've tried grouping the tracks, but can only get comping to work on one track at a time...

Hi all. I've searched the forum a bit for an answer, but couldn't find one. Here's the deal:
I finally need to do drum comping in Logic 8. I understand groups and enabling the edit feature, but man, am I getting some screwy results! (I have used the comping feature before on non-grouped tracks and it's worked fine.)
I can select whole takes, and every so often I can quick-swipe another take, but logic seems to erratically "undo" all my previous comps sometimes. Other times, it won't let me quick swipe at all. I'm in version 8.0.1.
Any ideas? Man, this thing would be a great tool *if it worked correctly*! I know, I know, no whining. But you gotta know how it feels when you're in the middle of a session.

  • How do I make separate tracks into takes in one track?

I want to know how to use quick swipe comping on separate tracks. If not possible, how do I merge those separate tracks as takes in one track so I can use quick swipe?
I am using logic pro X and finding comping very slow when trying to comp multi tracks.

Lasso-select (in one swoop) and/or cmd-select (one by one) all regions you want to include into the take folder, then control-click any of them and choose Pack Take Folder from the contextual menu.

  • What is the "old school" way of doing multi take recording?

I have been experimenting with the new to logic feature of quickswipe comping. I both like it and don't like it. It has flaws. In other threads I have seen people talking about just using the old method. What is this old method? How is it done? I would like to try it out and see which I prefer.

I've yet to meet anyone who does like or use the quickswipe feature in Logic 8, but despite everyone's protestations it appears here to stay... even Pro Tools & Performer have jumped on the bandwagon. Logic does however appear to have the simplest implementation (though there are known issues with it).
The 'old-skool' method was a lot easier before Logic 8 insisted that all takes recorded in cycle mode should be placed in a comp folder. Granted you can unpack the folder or use the 'Replace Mode' button in combination with the 'New for Overlapped Regions' function... but a) This takes longer than it should, & b) The 'New for Overlapped Regions' function is applied to all regions within your arrangement (not just the most recent recording) - annoying if you have any overlaps elsewhere.
Once you have unpacked your folder into a block of takes, it can be useful to temporarily colour each take before editing (so you know it's source). Then set your two edit tools to 'Pointer' & 'Scissors' (top right corner of the arrange page) - and by holding the 'cmd' key, you can alternate between these two tools. Thus you can quickly chop & move sections of regions to a master comp track. (Some people use the 'Marquee' tool, but I'm a 'Scissors' man)...
You can then delete or hide unwanted takes or sections. The beauty of this method is that you can set individual fades (rather than global) - essential in my books. Although it might sound more convoluted than the quickswipe method, in my experience, it's a lot quicker, a lot more flexible, & definitely more reliable. 'Old-skool' perhaps... 'tried & tested' - no doubt!

  • DAQmx multi taks meassurement

Refering to the LV 7.0 example ContAcq&Graph Votage Ext-clk Dig Start(file attached), in the generated waveform array the dt value does not change if you change the frequency in the Dig Start signal. The value of dt seems to be rather a random value.
How can I get, additionally to the AI-voltages (i.e. at the same time) the real dt of my signal?
Can my DAQ device 6034E read both signals at the same time (two tasks)?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hello Grivilla,
    you´re right,
the value of the dt is sometimes incorrect if you use external sample clock.
In your example you set the maximum expected sample rate you want to use to the configure sample clock vi (sample rate).
If this value matches your real sample clock, your dt in the waveform is right.
On the other hand, if you set this sample rate to 1 kHz and your connected signal have only 995 Hz, you´ll get an incorrect dt value in the waveform (0,001 instead of 1/995...).
1.) Make sure that the sample rate you set matches the real sample clock you connect external.
2.) Measure the frequency of your sample clock and give this value (1/sample clock) as dt to your waveform.
For a simple example of it, use the DAQ assistant for creating a "measure F
    requency" task.
You can run the AI and the frequency measurement in parallel.

  • Wierd Audio Behavior suddenly, stereo tracks now take up 2 mono tracks?????

So I start a new file, or open an existing file and all my tracks that have setero information all of a sudden take up 2 channels on the mixer, so if the audio is on track 1, meters for track 1 and 2 move. If I make track 1 a stereo track, track 2 disappears and says "Controlled by Stereo object "track 1-2""....now all my routing is messed up as this effects busses and everything...what gives? Is there something in my preferences that got changed? HELP!!!!!!!!

What the heck, tbird? Are you able to bend the parameters of time now, too? There was no post here when I replied with mine. Please, do share your secrets!

  • Weird Panning issue when comping stereo tracks

    Hi
I keep getting this again and again, when I record a guitar amp (for example) with 2 mics on separate track and then comp together a good track by selecting the same parts on each track (still with me ?), on playback I have the tracks panned left and right, but when it gets to an edit both parts sound like they are in the middle, after the edit they go back to panned. If I solo the 2 tracks you hear it clearly, but if you solo just 1 track nothing happens. Any ideas what I am doing wrong or what's going on ?

    2 mics on separate track
In the future you might find it easier to create the recording on one stereo track, where you have each mic assigned to its own channel (L/R). If you do it this way, I think you will avoid the problem you described.
But do you also need to fix existing material? Then it would help to have more information. What version of Logic are you using?

  • Which track to take for DBA OCA:    11g     or     12c?

    Hi,
I want to do become an Oracle Database Administrator Certified Associate (OCA).
Which of the 2 options should I take?  11g or 12c?
I am actually a developer (Forms & PL/SQL) trying to become a DBA.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards

I want to do become an Oracle Database Administrator Certified Associate (OCA).
I am actually a developer (Forms & PL/SQL) trying to become a DBA.
Why? How will having an OCA certification bring you closer to your goal?
Which of the 2 options should I take?  11g or 12c?
    Take the 12c path -
    1. that is where everything 'Oracle' is headed.
    2. companies will be increasingly upgrading/installing 12c as time goes by
    3. people will knowledge about 12c will be more and more in demand as time goes by
    4. people will knowledge about 11c will be less and less sin demand as time goes by
    5. the 12c knowledge you gain will become more and more useful to others (e.g. DBAs and your manager) at your company as they consider when, or if, to upgrade their databases to 12c.
    6. 12c knowledge will likely make you more valuable to your current company even before you get your certification. Managers like people that take the initiative to learn something new especially if that 'something new' is a skill that will be useful to the company.
    7. the exam costs for 12c is the same as for 11g
      For 11g see - http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=458&get_params=p_track_id:Datab11g
      For 12c see - http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=458&get_params=p_track_id:DBOCA12C
    8. you can freely download and install 12c for learning and practice just as you can 11g
The only downside I can think of is that there are fewer people you can turn to for help with any 12c-specific questions or issues you may run into. But there are plenty of books and online tutorials/articles that cover the bulk of those.

  • Working with drum designer drums - multi-output

    Hi all,
I am trying to create a software Inst. using multi-output drum designer - so I ...
    - create new software Inst. track
    - then set it to drum kit designer > multi-output
    - then choose a set - studio kit
    - record some midi drums
Q: How do I setup the drum track & mixer to have multi-output - so I can have separate mix tracks for hat - snare kick etc.

    I was told to :
Open the Mixer and use the + button on the instrument channel strip to start adding channels.
    and that worked well!

  • Can takes from more than one track be comped at the same time?

    Greetings,
I know that this question has been asked recently in this forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9527542&#9527542), but I don't think that the respondents completely understood the question... Or perhaps I did not understand the suggested solutions to the problem. I will ask the question in a slightly different way...
Suppose that I record guitar with 2 microphones (a pickup mic, and a room mic). The first microphone is recorded onto track 1, the second microphone is recorded onto track 2. Multiple takes are done in this manner. When it comes time to comp the tracks, how is it done? Can the takes from more than one track be comped together at the same time? I have tried to do this by grouping both tracks together, but it does not work.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

You had the right idea grouping the tracks together. You must make sure that in the group settings, the box titled "region selection (edit)" is checked. This will allow you to make the same cuts (or in this case, swipes) on all regions in the group.

  • Extreme Frustration: Logic Will Not Use Any of My Multi Cores Except One

Ok I am no novice User of Logic - I am not a supreme genius like David at LPH but I have been using it nearly every day for three years and I am a power user.
I am composing on a mac pro 8 core with 10 GB of ram.
I am suffering from the one core choke - burning slow --- pain ful death.... can''ttt compooooossseeee ...... after trying all the methods - I still get it
I compose via layers and then layers, its the only way I can get things to sound real-esque to my ears.
At first I thought I found an answer in bidule - but via rewire you can only use 1 (ONE!) core of 8 to run the whole bidule! So that makes it pretty much useless!
Then I thought I had an answer in assigning RAM friendly versions of Kontakt to instrument tracks (the mono timbral approach discussed a few months ago) but Logic still puts it all on one core! I had three software instrument tracks on Instrument tracks 8,9,10 with nothing else loaded and all the processing went on to my 8th core. the others didn't even move....hense a massive choke (I was playing Bach).
I get the same problem running the official multi timbral way
I mean truly, is Logic that dumb that it wont spread it out - I thought each channel strip gets its own core !?
This is just insane. Is my rig screwed up?
Here is the picture of the CPU monitor in logic pro 8
    http://vi-control.net/forum/uploads/attachments/picture7107.png
So, isn't it weird? It seems only the 8th line can shoot up, does it mean logic can't detect the other 15 parts of the whole CPU (8x2=16), or, logic indeed catchs all the CPU but there's only the problem from the CPU monitor?
I hope they can fix the bug soon, or the new 8 cores Mac Pro to me will not worth at all since I only use mac computer for programming music on logic.

That is... eh... remarkable. And weird.
Of course... this is a G5 so it doesn't spread the load out over cores, but processors. It is odd, I can get a few tracks going, keyboard, drums, bass... all Vi, check the CPU meters and it's one processor, do a few quick starts & stops and now the load is spread evenly. ??
One of the tricks for the OP is to create an empty audio track with no input, make sure that is the selected track before playing the project.
