Compiz and kde kicker panel

Hello, I am having a problem using compiz with kde's kicker panel.  I have my kicker set on auto-hide and when I enable the option in CCSM "unredirect fullscreen windows" my screen flickers when the kicker panels is raised.   This problem dissapears when I again unmark the CCSM option.
I am using kde 4.6.2 and nvidia 270.41.06-1
Any help or workarounds would be appreciated.

From the Compiz Fusion wiki:
Should programs be allowed to draw directly into a fullscreen window, bypassing the compositing process? This can significantly increase the performance of fullscreen games and videos, but may also cause visual glitches. If you don't know which setting is right for your use case, it's safer to leave this option disabled.
Seems like this is an expected issue, since Plasma renders itself independently of other apps and windows and therefore wouldn't comply with Compiz options (accept those found under "KDE Compatability").  I'm not sure how much of the issue would be your video driver and how much would be the window manager.

  • Compiz-Standalone, KDE...ERGH!

I pretty much can't decide between the two. I can set up a complete desktop environment with each one, but each has their own pros/cons....I can't decide which would be better if I were allowing others to use my computer (simply b/c they find it convenient to use a computer that's already on, so I created a guest account)...so far, here's what I've gathered from my current Compiz-Standalone setup & KDE setup:
    Compiz pros:
KUPFER (helps since I can easily browse my files w/o thunar open)
    lightweight
    more eyecandy
    cons:
I need TWO apps for changing my gtk+ theme completely
    KDE pros: easy usr switching
    plasmoids
    auto-tabbing
    easy configuration
    cons:
fsrunner breaks consistently, which is the only thing I'd need to work in order to kick kupfer out since I'd be able to pull up most files by typing their names
recent documents only uses KDE accessed documents (I don't know if there's a way around this)
it froze when I had the extensions dialog open for OO.o, dunno why
Also, can someone tell me the pros/cons vs Geany & kate? From what I've seen in their plugins, they seem to share the same feature set except for HTML/XML completion.

True, although my mind irritates me with "If you aren't using KWin, remove it from the system!" But removing Kwin from the system w/o taking KDE along with it is impossible.

Right. This isn't hard to do at all. I have Compiz running nicely in KDE 4.4 because KWin was choppy. I just set Compiz as the default WM via System Settings -> Default Applications -> Window Manager. There's a slight flicker during KDE's splash while it loads, but it loads before the DE itself. There are a few drawbacks though.
    - Wallpaper plugin doesn't work
    - Desktop activities don't work properly (you can still manage virtual desktops via CCSM)
    - Plasma animations and window previews don't work (but you can use Compiz plugins)
I believe there's going to be a Compiz release that's more tightly integrated with KDE4, but seeing as how KDE4 is 2 years old and the latest version of Compiz has been "looming" since September '09 who knews when or if that might happen.
I can do that, but as I said before, it sort of irritates me that I can't uninstall Kwin w/o taking the rest of the KDE w/it (otherwise I'd be fine w/either setup). Having the wallpaper plugin not working is fine for me since I have Plasma handle that if I'm in KDE. As for desktop activities, I don't really use them either, so that'd be fine too. I'm sure there was a plugin in Compiz that said "enable KDE Compatiblity" for fixing the thumbnail problem. Reinstalling KDE quickly to see if that fixes the thumbnail problem you mentioned.
[EDIT]: Reinstalled KDE and turned on that plugin I mentioned in Compiz. Sometimes my auto-hiding panel at the bottem doesn't pop up and it's animating the logout dialog.
[EDITEDIT]: Turned off built-in thumbnails and auto-hiding panel seems fine now. I let the system idle for a few minutes and wrote down the amount of RAM for each window manager + my plasma setup. Here's the numbers:
    Compiz+KDE setup: 230.8 MB
    KWin+KDE setup: 234.2 MB
It doesn't seem that different from each other. (I also now opened the extension manager of OO.o after reinstalling the plugins I had for it, it doesn't seem to crash KDE now)

  • [SOLVED]How to get a kicker panel like this?

I want my Arch/Chakra KDE to have a transparent kicker panel like http://pclinuxos.com/wp-content/uploads … minime.png I tried various permutation and combinations of existing themes i.e Air, Air Netbooks, Oxygen. Tried few themes like Glaze etc but none of them work. I don't want a complete transparent panel like in Bare Naked Theme(which does not work/come in KDE 4.4.2 BTW) but like shown in the above image with slight white hue but not more. Perfect as in the image. Does anyone know how to get it?

Like I mentioned above, * Naked theme is not available for 4.4.2 becoz I could not download it via the built in kde theme manager maybe it is in compatible. Is there a way to remove those ugly round shapes from AIR theme. modify .svg of air how?

  • Gkrellm and KDE

I have recently been having problems with Gkrellm and KDE.  I have gkrellm set to be dockable.  However, when I move gkrellm to the right of the screen and it docks there, the KDE panel shrinks in width a little bit, and shifts to the right.  Any ideas why this is happening?

When you open up Konsole (or whatever terminal program you are using) it logs you in automatically for the terminal session. So you are logged in to KDE and also Konsole. As a test, open up more Konsoles and see how many users you have.

  • Compiz and weird window placement

I just installed Arch and KDE.  It all works fine except for compiz, which works, but any window opened goes to the top left hand corner and the title bar is hidden so I can't even move it.

Start the CompizConfigSettingsManager (ccsm) and check if the window decorator plugin is enabled if you have no window boarders.
There is another plugin for windows placement (don't know how its called because my settings manager is in german).
Maybe you have to active a lot of other plugins before compiz works how you like it.

Since installing LTR 5.4, which I've now upgraded to 5.6, I've encountered repeated slowness and malfunctions in operations, especially when using the Compare View function and the Tab key to open and close the right and left side panels.  Such problems never arose during two years of using LTR-4 and nothing else has changed on my computer.  I have a pretty simple system with only a few plug-ins, which are usually not in operation.  I have 12GB of RAM in my Windows 7 PC.  I could illustrate these problems with screen shots if you would tell me how to submit screen shots.  Otherwise I will try to describe the problems in words.
The problem is clearly cumulative, growing worse as usage time passes.  Compare View feature gradually slows down and eventually seems to choke as my work session proceeds. If I Exit LTR and re-enter and start all over, things will work normally for maybe 30 minutes, but then the Compare View feature begins to become very slow to respond.   In a recent example with my screen full of thumbnails in Library mode I highlighted two images to compare. LTR started to open the Compare View screen by first having the top row of thumbnails disappear to be replaced by the "SELECT" and "CANDIDATE" words in their spaces  (but no images), but Compare View never succeeded in gaining control of the screen. After some seconds the top row of thumbnails reasserted its position and the Compare View windows disappeared. But LTR kept trying to bring them back. Again the top row of thumbnails would go away, Select and candidate would reappear, try again, and give up. This went on for at least 2-3 minutes before I tried to choose File and Exit, but even that did not initially want to respond. It doesn't like to accept other commands when it's trying to open Compare View. Finally it allowed me to exit.
To experiment I created a new catalog of 1100 images.  After 30-40 minutes, the Compare View function began to operate very slowly. With left and right side panels visible and two thumbnails highlighted, hitting Compare View can take half a minute before the two mid-size  images open in their respective SELECT and CANDIDATE windows. When the side panels are open and two images are in the Select/Candidate spaces, hitting the Tab button to close the side panels produces a very delayed response--25-30 seconds to close them, a few more seconds to enlarge the two images to full size. To reverse the process (i.e., to recall the two side panels), hitting Tab would make the two sides of the screen go black for up to a minute, with no words visible. Eventually the info fields in the panels would open up.
I also created a new user account and imported a folder of 160 images. After half an hour Compare View began mis-placing data.  (I have a screen shot to show this.)  CANDIDATE appears on the left side of SELECT, whereas it should be on the right. The accompanying camera exposure data appears almost entirely to the left of the mid-screen dividing line. Although the Candidate and Select headings were transposed, the image exposure data was not, but the data for the image on the right was almost entirely to the left of the line dividing the screen in two.
Gurus in The Lightroom Forum have examined Task Manager data showing Processes running and Performance indicators and they see nothing wrong.  I could also send screen shots of this data.
At this point, the only way I can process my images is to work 30-40 minutes and then shut down everything, exit, and re-start LTR.  This is not normal.  I hope you can find the cause, and then the solution.  If you would like to see my screen shots, tell me how to submit them.

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.

  • [solved] Issue with conky and Kde 4

I have a small issue with conky and KDE 4.2. I start conky with a script which I stored under ~/.kde/Autostart. The script is simple and looks like this..
    conky -c ~/.conkyrc_kde4
This works fine. But when I restart the first KDE and check with ps, I have 2 instances of conky running. The instances keep on growing with the number of restarts.
I think kde tries to restart all the apps which were running when the session was terminated. Is there a way to change this behavior in general or all the programs or for only a specific program like conky ?

  • Problem with Drag and drop in panel dashboard

    Hi
I am having problem with drag and drop in panel dashboard.
I will explain what i am doing.
I am using Oracle three column template in First region i am having a table that showing all customer.
I drag one record from my table and drop it on customer info (CIF) page on second region it is working fine.
my CIF page has a dashboard with 6 panel box. i am showing 6 different jsff in 6 panel box.
I put drop target in each jsff
    <af:dropTarget dropListener="#{backingBeanScope.backing_customerinformation.handleItemDrop}"
    actions="COPY">
    <af:dataFlavor flavorClass="org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.model.RowKeySet"
    discriminant="CustomerSearchDnD"/>
    </af:dropTarget>
when i put drop target my panel boxes moves only when i drag it to another panel box header not entire part of panel box.
if i remove the drop target then panel box move normally as the example given on: [http://adfui.us.oracle.com:7778/faces-trunk/faces/visualDesigns/dashboard.jspx?_afrLoop=2021391022520156&_afrWindowMode=0&_afrWindowId=null] but in taht case i am not able to drag and drop my data

You must be an Oracle employee as you're referring to a component in the upcoming JDeveloper version which has yet been released to the general public. Oracle employee's are, I believe, directed to post on internal Oracle forums.

  • Can a Mac Pro support 5 DVI panels and 1 HDMI panel?

I'm deciding between getting a Mac Pro or new PC. I have 5 DVI panels and 1 HDMI panel to support. I know a variety of PC motherboards support a variety of video cards that will support those display requirements.
Does anybody know if the video options for the Mac Pro will also support those display requirements?

To do this with 5770s you would need two of them and at least 2 "active" adapters. It might be more cost effective to use the 5770 it will come with and 2@ 2600XT cards.
A simple rule of thumb for video cards, ATI/AMD cards ALL work on ALL Mac Pros (if they are Mac cards)
When looking at Nvidia cards, you need to be aware of which model Mac you have. Some Nvidia cards will be "EFI-32" only, and some will be "EFI-64" only. New Mac Pros are all EFI64.
    http://macvidcards.com/macpro/which-mac-pro-do-you-own/
Whatever card you get, be sure it is specifically listed as being for Mac Pros. Only with Nvidia cards do you need to worry about which model.

  • Gnome and KDE 4.1 without mixing?

I'm running Gnome and love it, but wanted to give KDE 4.1 a chance so I installed it too. When logging in (GDM) I choose whether I want to run Gnome or KDE 4.1,  but when I boot KDE the kde menus are full Gnome stuff, and when I boot Gnome, the menus are full of KDE stuff. It's a mix I don't like. Either I run Gnome or KDE.
Is there a way to stop the Gnome menus scanning the KDE apps and the KDE menus to stop scanning the Gnome apps?
Besides that, when I'm in Gnome and open a nautilus bookmark from the "Places" menu, Konquerer starts up happily and makes me think, "What a mess. Is this the way it's supposed to work?"
If I want to run Gnome only and KDE only, do I need to make a dual boot with two separate Arch installations?
Last edited by thunderogg (2008-08-01 08:54:02)

The menu "problem" is due to both desktops using the standard menu item location (Freedesktop.org, I believe defines this).  If you want completely separate, you don't have to dual boot with two separate Arch installs, just create a new user and make a shared data location that your KDE and Gnome user can access.  For example:
/home/thunderogg could be thunderogg, your Gnome user
/home/kthunderogg could be kthunderogg, your KDE user
Create a new /home/shared folder with permissions for both users and save your documents there.  That's the only way that I know of to have both installed and not have a menu mess.

  • Wine and KDE shortcuts

Using the Window-Specific workarounds I'm able to disable KDE global shortcuts.  For example, in Diablo 2, ALT-F2 does not bring up the run dialog.  GREAT!
My problem is that there are occasions that I want my full-screen wine application to loose focus or minimize; for example to make a Skype call.  When someone calls me the Skype dialog and KDE taskbar pop to the front allowing me to minimize my wine application.  However, I have no way of making a call without exiting the application.
I'm kind of at a loss here.  I don't want to disable the KDE global shortcuts but I'd like some way of minimizing the full-screen wine application.  Does anyone have a creative suggestion?

  • XFCE and KDE question

Would there be any conflicts if XFCE and KDE were both installed at the same time or would it be wiser to remove KDE before installing XFCE?

You'll probably be fine. Both programs can edit desktop files which can effect the other. I'm not sure how KDE handles mime types though. If it uses the same database, that could cause one to effect the other.

  • XFCE and KDE Menus on same machine

I'm planning on installing both XFCE and KDE on a laptop and was wondering if there was any way to separate the KDE and XFCE programs in the menu.  For example on KDE when I go to Multimedia under the K Menu I would see K3B and under a subfolder called XFCE or GTK2 or whatever I would see Brasero.  I'd like to do the opposite in XFCE, with the KDE apps in a seperate subfolder.  I seem to remember seeing this on another distro but can't remember what it was.  Is there any way to do this automatically?  Thanks.

As far as KDE goes, right click anywhere in the menu system or on the KDE button, and you can get into the menu editor. From there, you can do anything you want. Of course, when installing new programs, they are going to end up where ever the packager wants them.
