Compiz Shadows Question

First, thanks in advance to the community for your help.  (And thanks to the Arch Devs!)
Anyway, I am using Gnome and Compiz.  I have the window decorations and such set up the way I like them.  But now a question.  How do I change the color of the window shadows?  They are red/pink right now, as can bee seen from this screenshot:
http://www.bigpony.com/linuxscreenshots/redshadows.png
Now, whenever I go into either Compiz configurations OR Emerald configurations, my shadow colors are set the way a I want them (a dark black/blue color).  When I boot up, the red shadows are there.  When I go to mess with them, they just disappear.  When I reboot, the red shadows are back.  Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this and how to change the shadows colors?
Again, thanks in advance.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same problem.  Like right now I have a little orangy-yello glow around my windows.  That's cool -- I set it that way.  But I'll bet you the next time I log out and log in OR reboot, there's a 50/50 chance I'll have no window glow/halo.  Sometimes The halo is a nice CYAN color I didn't set.
The problem (at least for me) is that the halo is configured correctly, but it only shows up sometimes and other times it does not.  Check out my video in posting #3 and see what I'm talking about.
I never had _this_ specific problem, but a lot of times I had upgraded compiz and then some plugin changes its configuration or stops working. Compiz is beta software, so when its development change (and changes a lot), something get broke on the gconf, it happens all the time.
So, even its another problem you are having, you can try fixing it by cleaning up the old config and starting again (of course, considering isn't the plugin itself that is borked).

  • Thin white line around black .ai logo and drop shadow question

    Hello,
There's a very thin white line all around a black .ai logo I made when placed on a color background. It shows up in printing and acrobat (PDF % compatibility) too. Also, is there any way to get a transparent drop shadow (no white boxes) when saving as eps.
    Thanks
Running OS10.4.11 In Design CS3, intel mac.

Is the logo rasterized in Illustrator? It sounds like something was antialiased against a white background.
    >Also, is there any way to get a transparent drop shadow (no white boxes) when saving as eps
No. EPS does not support transparency. If an area is not fully transparent (because nothing is drawn there) then it is fully opaque. PDF and AI support transparency.

  • Openbox-svn crashes and shadows question

    Hi,
I installed openbox-svn visibility-svn obconf2-svn from smoons repo, and everything seemed to work fine at first...
Then I messed with the themes and now everytime I try to acces the RMB menu openbox crashes and goes back to slim?
I've tried to to remove all above programs and their config files then re-install but the crash remains.
    Any help?
Also seems that some ppl (ht) have window shadows in openbox so how to enable these?
Ps, might help to try if some1 could post fully working openbox-svn: themerc.xml, rc.xml, menu.xml or any other needed file.

Specifically, which VDI operating systems can be shadowed using Windows Server 2012 R2?

    Hi  Don ,
The shadow feature returns with Windows Server 2012 R2.  Shadow allows server administrators to either view or take control of RDP sessions.

  • Drop Shadows Look Too Solid When Printed

Designer newbie here with a drop shadow question.  I am working on a project using vintage-style square photos with a white stroke and a drop shadow.  It looks great on the screen but I just got a page back from the printer and the drop shadows are way too solid-looking on the paper.  They almost look like grey boxes around the photo.
This is a personal project and every time I print, I have to go to FedEx Office to pick it up, so I don't want to just fiddle.  I'm hoping you can help me.  How do I get them to look more subtle?  I tried lowering the opacity and they just looked like lighter gray boxes around the photo.
I am using Adobe InDesign CS 6Here are the settings I am using:
    Thanks!

The High Quality Press preset exports color unchanged so a default drop shadow will export as CMYK black percentages. I'm assuming that the FedX printer is some kind of composite copier and it might not color manage device CMYK values very well. By default ID documents are set up for US SWOP web press printing, which the FedX printer is not.
I don't think there's an easy answer for you, but I would build a test sheet with a dozen or so boxes with different shadows. It's not unusual for composite digital printer to have trouble with CMYK values, so try some shadows with RGB as the color and export with the PDF/X-4 preset.
Also set your document's RGB profile to sRGB :

  • Fvwm colorset question

Ok, this is one of those really stupid questions that a google or forum search should answer in a second, if only I knew the correct magic keywords to search for. :-D
I'm working on Metisse (the client for which is basically a slightly hacked fvwm) and want to customize the configuration to my liking. I thought of copying an existing fvwm theme (maybe a clearlooks theme), but I really ought to understand the configuration I was provided with and each of the options I change as I change them rather than clobbering it.
Now, that simple silly problem I've got. No matter what I do, I can't seem to define a colorset that doesn't put some kind of highlight or shadow around the font in menus, titlebars, etc. If I don't specify highlight and shadow, it generates one for me. If I try to make it the same as the fg, it makes the letters look wide and blocky.
Its gotta be simple, what am I missing?
Also, Is there a difference between 'fgsh' and 'sh' in the colorset specification?
    Thanks,
    Dusty

for your shadow question, this (from the fvwm man page) may be of help:
    FONT SHADOW EFFECTS
Fonts can be given 3d effects. At the beginning of the font name (or just after a possible StringEncoding specification) add
    Shadow=size [offset] [directions]:
size is a positive integer which specifies the number of pixels of shadow. offset is an optional positive integer which defines the number of pixels to offset the shadow from the edge of the character. The default offset is zero. directions is an optional set of directions the shadow emanates from the character. The directions are a space separated list of fvwm directions:
    N, North, Top, t, Up, u, -
    E, East, Right, r, Right, r, ]
    S, South, Bottom, b, Down, d, _
    W, West, Left, l, Left, l, [
NE, NorthEast, TopRight, tr, UpRight, ur, ^
SE, SouthEast, BottomRight, br, DownRight, dr, >
SW, SouthWest, BottomLeft, bl, DownLeft, dl, v
NW, NorthWest, TopLeft, tl, UpLeft, ul, <
    C, Center, Centre, .
A shadow is displayed in each given direction. All is equivalent to all the directions. The default direction is BottomRight. With the Center direction, the shadow surrounds the whole string. Since this is a super set of all other directions, it is a waste of time to specify this along with any other directions.
The shadow effect only works with colorsets. The color of the shadow is defined by using the fgsh option of the Colorset command. Please refer to the COLORSETS section for details about colorsets.
Note: It can be difficult to find the font, fg, fgsh and bg colors to make this effect look good, but it can look quite good.
As rasat pointed out before, you can also change your font shadow color to the same color as your title bar color.
For the gaim question, with some effort you could probably solve it by creating your own focus policiy (probably you will need a focus policy for the gaim conversation window)

  • PDF files and address books

I am no longer able to open any PDF file. When I try to do so the screen on the PDF file is black and I cannot view the content of the file.  Also, I am unable to open my address book.  There is a shadow "question mark" image over the book.  Any help on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated.  I did check another forum which suggested uninstalling Adobe Reader to solve the PDF issue.  I have uninstalled this program however, it has not helped. Thnx.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Kde with compiz, but no shadows

    Hey together!
Does anyone know how to get shadows with compiz on kde? I use compiz instead of kwin, because its faster for me, but my kde windows have no shadows. Chromium has them, but not my kde windows. I activated the decoration plugin with shadows, but there are no shadows. Any tipps? I use KDE 4.7 with compiz 0.8.8.
    Best regards!

    A couple of questions...
How are you starting Compiz? Or rather, what's the output of
    ps axuw | grep compiz
when Compiz is running? If you are starting Compiz with the ccp plugin, then all configuration happens via ccsm and you can ignore the bits about GConf.
Which window decorator are you using? Is it Emerald, kde4-window-decorator, or something else?
If you use Emerald (from pacman: emerald), then drop shadows are the responsibility of the Emerald theme, which can be edited with emerald-theme-manager.
If you use kde4-window-decorator (from pacman: compiz-decorator-kde), then drop shadows are drawn by the KWin theme you've selected from systemsettings->Workspace Appearance->Window Decorations. The only default KWin theme that draws drop shadows is Oxygen, so if you're using a different theme, that may be the reason you have no shadows. As far as I can tell, the shadow-related settings from Compiz's Window Decoration plugin have no effect on kde4-window-decorator.
It is also possible that you have no window decorator running at all (i.e. your windows have no borders), in which case Chrome would be the only window with a drop shadow because it draws its own window border.
Finally, everything I've written above presumes that you are using Compiz 0.8.8, so if you are using a different version, please let me know.

  • Follow Up Question about shadow Images

    Hello!
A couple weeks ago I asked about drop shadows set with images
    and I was
    given some helpful
advice. Something came up and I wasn't able to get back to
    putting the
information into application until a couple days ago. Forgive
    my ignorance
but another question has surfaced. Many here advocate that a
    serious web

    been making
significant headway in both. Some unanswered questions
    persist and while I
    can ferit it out

    to ask
the question that is effecting my immediate situation. I have
three images - top, center (this one repeats), and bottom -
    that I am trying
to place as a background. Here is the CSS that I
have written for the accasion, based on the advice given here
    on this forum.
The problem I am having is applying the div tags in the
    correct manner that
will give me the results I am looking for. Here is how the
    code renders
    through IE 7:
    http://www.ors-llc.com/AboutORS/experiment.html.
    As you see
the images are not one continuous background image. Obviously
    I have
something wrong here; can anyone advise?
    Thank you in advance.

  • "Shadow" next to cursor question

    Hello.
Very basic question I'm sure but I only bought FCE as I couldn't adjust very well to the i-Movie change.....
Anyway, I was happily dragging clips into the Timeline, putting some transition effects on them, adjusting, rendering and moving to the next bit. Very basic but what I needed to do.
Now I must have changed some sort of mode as the cursor now has a small dark shadow to the right of it and I can no longer just grab a chunk on the Timeline and move it or adjust an effect in the same way as before.
Blowed if I can find what I did or even where to start in the manual.
    Any help appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Alastair

I tripped over something similar a while back. I will describe mine and see if it matches yours. I have dozens of clips scattered over a few video tracks. I can select an individual clip then click select it and the 4 way move arrow shows up. I can then drag his clip anywhere. NOW here comes the tricky part.
1 IF you choose to put this new clip on any particular track you will notice either a right arrow ( NOTE how your tracks are split into 2 parts by a long horizontal gray bar) if your cursor is above the horizontal divider the cursor showsa right arrow --OR a down arrow if your cursor is below that horizontal divider.
Right arrow means insert ie it will drop your clip right there and shove everything on every unlocked track to the right
Down arrow means superimpose - it will write over anything on the track you are dropping it onto. Nothing else gets shoved out of the way.
THe fact it showed up in the middle of a project is bogus --- it may have showed up after you added enough effects etc to have not enough space to put your clip neatly in without over writing what is under it . I jsut tried it and i always see the 2 arrows when i move things around .
In re only one frame transition i cant help you -- you can set those timers up in some place i cant find right now --
    -- ALso groping around ...

  • Compiz Fusion: Adjusting shadows on popups/menus.

I have drop shadows enabled in Compiz, and they're perfect.. But for some reason, the drop shadow under my menus and popups are always much darker, and they look horrendous.
    How do I adjust them?

I am running 64 bit arch.
This would probably be best in the 64-bit section then. Double-post there and a moderator can lock this one (and mods, if that was a bad thing to say, please do tell ).
On topic, I really have no idea, but /var/log/Xorg.0.log is generally useful, so try posting that. Maybe someone can go through that and find something interesting from there.

  • Compiz -- No shadows with new kernel?

I know there have been random posts about this, but I was wondering if anybody has had any updates, since nobody has said anything for a few weeks.
Basically speaking, I have the problem where nVidia 169.12 + 2.6.24 = no shadows or, occasionally, off-color, faint shadows that you can barely see.  All other aspects of Compiz work just fine--and in fact, the shadows worked fine a few weeks ago when I had 64-bit Arch installed.  However, I got tired of the hassle that was Java et al., and switched to 32-bit.  However, like I said, I have yet to see any shadows at all.  All other window decorations work--just not shadows.
Direct rendering, etc., is all working... hardware acceleration is not the issue.
I've recompiled the kernel, used both the Thinkpad kernel (kernel26tp) and the Zen kernel (kernel26-zen), but I still have the same problem.  Does anybody have a solution?
EDIT: Added my xorg.conf config file, for what its worth...

Sorry to double-post, but here are just a few posts--the last one is exactly the same problem, and neither the OP or I have found any solutions.

  • KDE4 question - Built-in effects compared to compiz/fusion icon/emeral

Hello i am new to the forums and i've been using Arch for a few months now, but i have a couple of questions.
I was a hardcore KDE user in the 3.X days, but when 4.0 first launched i was confused and shocked, so i decided to give Gnome a try and its pretty darn nice, and i have been using it for awhile now.  I just did a fresh install with KDEmod 4.2.1 to see if things have changed and i'm a bit confused.
    1. What is the relationship between the effects in kde4 and the old-school method still used in Gnome (fusion-icon, emerald, compiz-config settings manager)?  In gnome i managed to get 99% of everthing working with my Nvidia card on this same pc, but KDE4 i am confused about how to set these options from the CCSM.  These options were essential on Gnome to get the effects tear-free and to get video output tear-free.
    2. Can I use the old method on KDE4?  The old method has 20X more effects to choose from.  Any drawbacks to that method?
I won't hesitate to go back to Gnome if i can't get everything working, but it would be nice to use KDE again, as this release seems to be less buggy.
    Thanks!

They are not the same. Although many of the effects are similar, the native effects are provided by kwin and do not require compiz at all. Hence you can't use ccsm to set these.

Yes you can. In systemsettings under standard applications there is also an option for you to set whether kde should use kwin or another installed window manager (such as compiz) as the standard window manager. You can also use fusion-icon.
The drawbacks are that the integretation is not as smooth. You won't be able to get the same integrated miniature preview of launchers and open apps in the panel and the pager plasmoid doesn't recognise compiz workspaces. If your taskbar as sorted by desktops, that might also be problematic.
