Compiz Standalone, annoying screen flicker with OpenGL apps

I am using the Nvidia proprietary drivers.
Whenever I'm running an OpenGL app, such as virtualbox, and I try to change viewports, the screen goes black for an entire second or two.
Help?

Bump.
I have tried every combination of --indirect-rendering, --loose-binding, SynctoVBlank, etc that I could think of.
I'm guessing there is some misconfiguration of my nvidia driver or X.

• Applet Screen Flicker with JRE 1.5.0_02 Onwards

Hi, I have a problem with an Off-The-Shelf product which utilises a web-based Java Applet.
When it was originally installed in the days of JRE 1.4.2 it worked fine but as the JRE's have been updated it has now taken on a screen flicker.
After some lengthy investigations this seems to be as of JRE 1.5.0_02 (or JRE 5 Update 2), and after some reading I believed it was due to the update() of the repaint not including double-buffering, but as the problem does not exist before 1.5.0_02 I am bit confused.
Obvioulsy rolling back the JRE for a lot of users is not a desired solution and as I do not have the source code I understand there may be no solution...
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks in advance,
Ashley

Have you contacted the creators of the product, the ones with the source code? If it's popular enough, than many more will have experienced your problem and likely they have or are working on a solution.

• Screen flicker with 10.7.2

When I upgraded to OSX 10.7.2, I started to immediately get a lot of screen flicker on my old 27" LCD Cinema Display (c.2003) connected to a Mac Pro. I am hoping that an upgrade to a newer Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel) might fix the flicker - any thoughts?
Note. The Mac Pro (2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon) just pre-dates Thunderbolt so that type of display isn't an option
The old LCD Cinema Display uses an Apple DVI to ADC Adapter to connect to the Mac Pro and the Mac Pro has a ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB graphics card fitted as standard. I have tried lowering the resolution from 1920 x 1200 and have tried reinstalling the OSX 10.7.2 combo, both haven't fixed the problem.
The timeing suggests the problem is more to do with the latest Lion update rather than that the graphics card is about to fail - as the flickering might suggest - because the picture is completely stable when in full screen mode with Elgato EyeTV (i.e. using the LCD Cinema Display to watch TV).
Is it time to put the old 27" LCD Cinema Display out to grass?
Patrick

HI PAT:
HAPPENING to anyone that has the old Acrylic Cinema displays that use the ACD-DVI adapter.
unplugging the adapter and replugging solves the issue bu it only last for one session if you reboot the flickering comes back so you have to unplug and replug again. is a Pain in the B.
lot of people complaining about it. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16357859#16357859http://
Hope this helps

• Will warranty cover 1 dead pixel and an incredibly annoying screen flicker?

Problems:
1) I have 1 dead pixel on my iPod Touch and it's very annoying as it sticks out because the entire screen is black, and there is just this dot of light
2) I sometimes use my iPod Touch in the dark, so this means that I keep the contrast at the lowest level, as it being too bright hurts my eyes. The problem with this is that the screen flickers between contrasts slightly and it ends up making me feel dizzy.
I've tried turning the auto brightness option to off to prevent the above, but it doesn't make any difference. I've also tried turning the contrast slightly up too, but still it flickers slightly.
Any advice?
Thanks

The warranty will cover a dead pixel and the flickering screen. But before we get drastic, let's do some troubleshooting. Try a hard reset by holding the home and sleep/wake button at the same time until the Apple logo appears on screen. Skip the slide to power off screen.

• IMac early 2008 occasional screen flicker with external monitor

I am experiencing flickering with my early 2008 iMac when driving an external monitor. My Thinkpad is flawless when pushing out to the monitor.
It will be fine, but occassionaly (every 5-20seconds) the screen gives a little flicker, about 1/4 of a second in duration.
Also, sometimes, there is no flickering, it depends on what is being displayed, which makes me think video card. I am using the 2400XT and my software is up to date.
ROM Revision: 113-B2250H-259
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.259
I am thinking about trying to source a 2600pro that came on the more high end version of my iMac and swap out the graphics card. I also want to drop a 2TB hdd in it, so I figure I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone, or kill 1 iMac with 2 simutaneous upgrades if I am unlucky! (o_O)

iMacs are not designed to have the graphics cards upgraded. If your old card is bad and you feel competent to exchange it for the same one that's really your only GPU option. Apple never said the iMac GPU's were upgradeable and frankly I've never heard of anyone successfully upgrading an iMac GPU.
As far as the adaptor well you could bring your system into an Apple Store and have it checked out by a Genius, it's a free service. I don't know how to make a reservation in Japan but I'm sure you can from the Japanese Apple site. The link in the US is:
http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
I'm providing that so you can look for something equivalent.

• Annoying screen flicker on my Y2P

I purchased my 13" Y2P earlier this year and am satisfied with it except for this one annoying problem. Every now and then the screen turns off for a few seconds and comes back on. This will happen two or three times every incident it happens and then it'll go away. Occasionally it'll get so bad and not come back on at all until I reboot.
I have updated all my drivers and have EM set to high performace mode and turned off auto screen dimmer in both PC settings and the Intel graphics card properties.
Any place I can check that could be causing this? What drivers should I look at?
Thanks

If you're having heavy flickers and screen blanking then that could easily be the result of "Panel self refresh" option from Intel graphics panel, Power options.
Yoga's stock display driver doesn't have this option, but the ones from Intel do have it. It's a power saving option, that, looks like, isn't completely compatible with Y2P, probably because of higher power demands of Yoga's display.
If it's enabled it will make a good difference in display's power drain, it adds almost an hour to battery life.
BUT, the result is that it causes heavy flickers and blankings for a few seconds, every 2-3 hours (in my experience).
I use this option when I need to stretch my battery life as long as possible.
BTW, if the screen turns off and doesn't come back on, you can just close the lid to put the laptop to sleep, and open it straight away. That will bring the screen back to normal. No need to restart Windows.

• Screen flicker with multiple monitors

I tried plugging an external monitor into my laptop and though the second screen came up it caused both screens to flicker continuously with horizontal lines going across. This happened both when I used xrandr manually and when I used the Gnome control panel. It's been a while since I used an external monitor so I'm not sure if a particular update broke anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Try to run all displays in the same resolution (the settings of the less advanced, smaller display, not the other way around). Additional displays require additional processing, close other applications. Unplug the 23" for now, try it when you've got everything else running. Restart connected computers after you've changed settings on any detectable display. Make sure the bandwidth is sufficient for screen sharing on both ends. (I would use Spaces on the remote computer to create speedy access to applications.) When this works, try to connect the external display.

• Screen Flicker with new Retina Display iPad?

New iPad Retina Display seem to flicker when scrolling through Aps when I am downloading an Ap. This does not occur with either my iPad 1 or iPad 2.

jbthree: I can pretty much confirm this is a OS issue as I exchanged my Retina Display for the iPad Mini, some thing occurs so it is a glitch in Apples OS that needs to be fixed. Ironically the iPad mini seemed to work better especially the WiFi, Apple should have put a Retina display on this device and kept the same price and they would have sold more IMHO. I think it is the OS with the new units hardware not working together, so it's very hard to say if it, is one or the other just yet. I have 14 days to return this one, and if Apple doesn't release some thing that fixes it, I will return it and wait. On the Mini it only happens when I am in the App store and nowhere else, where on the iPad Retina display it happened App Store and other areas. Maybe the first batches are affected it will be interesting if anyone else sees it as an issue or not.

• IPhone screen dim in OpenglES app

I have written a small app to show off an animation in OpenGLES but after a while the iPhone screen goes dim (power save mode?) is there an event I can handle to stop that from happening because at the moment the user keeps needing to tap the screen which is undesirable.

\[UIApplication sharedApplication\].idleTimerDisabled = YES;

• I fixed my screen flicker with HDMI by...

I went to system prefs -> then screen -> change resolution to 1080p and it fixed the problem. Before my monitor was on 1080i.
I have Version 10.7.5

I looked over a number of mac forums and I can say that there are two separate flicker problems:
1. Continuous flicker, obvious on a blue/gray wallpaper when dimming the brightness. Flicker not visible on full brightness, growing while dimming the display. At 50% brightness the display is very usable, flicker visible only if you are actually looking for it. My take this is a software problem (found few people saying the flicker is gone in Windows XP in bootcamp, but present in OSX).
2. Random flicker, ranging from almost visible to flashing screen. Comes at random times, with or without the power adapter plugged in. Can appear in all sorts of combinations/situations. I do not want to assume anything here, but I feel this is a hardware problem based on the YouTube clips I saw.
My case was the first one, thank God and hopefully it will stay like this, although I saw MacBooks on display with no flicker whatsoever.
On the second case, I think a trip to an Apple Service Center would fix it. Unfortunately there is no known faulty module that changed is fixing the problem for everyone with the random/continuous flicker. Everything from logic boards to invertors to displays were changed with mixed results. But it seems the invertor is being changed in most cases and most people are happy with the result.
My 2c.
Have a nice day!
Cristian.

• Screen flicker with temporary lockups

System:
1.4 G Athlon
Asus A7M266 motherboard
MSI 8831 Geforce2 Pro Video card
Sound Blaster Live!
I-Will SATA RAID controller card
2 x 120 Gig Maxtor Diamond Max Plus HD
ethernet card
I recently upgraded to the 2 maxtor hard drives. And since my motherboard doesn't support RAID I bought an I Will SATA controller card to do the job. I installed Windows XP without a hitch and got the latest drivers for all my devices. I started to notice that occasionally the screen would turn off and then immediately turn back on, like it wasn't getting a signal for a split second. The screen would sometimes not refresh properly either. Then in every video game I tried my system would lock up for only a minute or two and then continue with the game. I also noticed that in the system log I was getting warnings about paging issues on my harddrives. I checked my IRQ list and discovered that all of my PCI cards(video, sound, ethernet, and SATA RAID controller) are on the same IRQ (IRQ 9). Could this be causing the problem? Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this problem? Thanks
Trevor

In my experience your Sound card and GFX card shuld not share the same IRQ, Never... remove your cards (via the normal route). Install your GFX card and drivers..... Then install the sound card and drivers... Check IRQs... they should have reallocated themselves, I'm concerned that XP has allocated the same IRQ??? The IRQ (interupt request) is trying to deliver sound/gfx/and raid on the same IRQ which It's like 4 people trying to get through a small door at the same time.... hence the crashing.
I this doesn't work, in your BIOS you can set Auto IRQs or Manual... if you are on Auto try setting up manually.
If it's on manual set to Auto....
Your sound card usually (NOT in all cases) is shared with your printer which wouldn't hurt....
But general rule of thumb is that heavy usage devices like sound/GFX/input (HD) device really need their own IRQs (away from each other), but in fairness the OS and Onboard Card bios/software should actually have helped with IRQ
allocation...
I do know that at least sound and GFX should be on their own IRQ but it's ok for HD (IDE controller) to share with GFX or sound. I read this ages ago and don;t know if it still applies with today OS like XP. I know it was a problem on 98se etc... I hope this helps.
Oh and make sure your XP has all SPs... I remember a SP for IDE controllers from early on.

• Annoying screen mirroring with Appletv

Hello,
The situation: i have just bought a Macbook and for quite some time already i have been a fan of using my AppleTV with my Ipad. Now, when sitting at home surfing and listening to music I prefer to use Spotify, Soundcloud etc with my Macbook. When i activate the ATV with the MB however, it always also mirrors my desktop screen to my television. When doing finances and stuff I prefer the ATV not to mirror my desktop activities.
Is there something like a method with which i can select only audio for the ATV?
Thank you for the reply!
Kind regards,
Peter

Hello, thank you for the reply!
I cannot select audio outputs however.. I've attached a screenshot to this email that hopefully clarifies.
Again, thanks.

• Temporary Solution for screen flicker r9 280x

After performing various tests I've fixed the screen flickering on my msi r9 280x, I hope this can be useful for all here with the same problem and with different patterns of R9 family, that I have running on my pc and I have not had even the slightest flicker playing youtube videos where the problem became acute.
1 open the task manager and end the process Catalyst Control Center: Monitoring program and also the Catalyst Control Center: Host Application.
2 Go to C: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE right click on the Profiles file, in the end the general menu select Read only, accept.
3 Again right click and select edit, and file searches within these lines
<Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_6798&SUBSYS_27751462&REV_00_4&320ACFF0&0&0010A">
<Property name = "Want_0" value = "850" /> CHANGE THIS VALUE OF 850 FOR 900 only
<Property name = "Want_1" value = "1200" />
This value changes the low voltage in 2d (resting) 0.85va 0.90v
4 then go to the File menu, select Save As, in writing profiles.xml nombe save.
5 Again right click on the profiles file saved on the desktop and select read-only
6 Go back to Go to C: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE and remove the profiles file.
7 copy or cut and paste into C profiles saved file to your desktop: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE.
8 Finally go to task manager and then click on file to run new task, we write MOM.exe there and ready, restart the pc for security.
to ensure that its voltage is at 0.90v use GPUZ and check the end of the sensors tab.
note that if we use the application msi afterburner not enable Unofficial Overclocking mode option because in themselves to have it on and change the clocks video card testing restores the voltage 0.85V.
when I play some games I use msi afterburner like msi Gaming app since I have experienced that without the Gaming app clocks fall then at 300mhz after making this process voltage, I recommend you use to see, as an example in msi afterburner I apply the core clocks of vga 1100 and Gaming active app one of the two profiles, the Gaming mode or the mode Oc down and watches only parameters selecionados 1020 mhz or 1050 mhz vga respectively when accelerating up to 1100 mhz selected msi afterburner.
I hope this is useful that I share as many as we can not believe that to date no actions are taken to this problem taking into account the value of the video card. Maybe this and many what they knew, but there will be many who do not and those like me tried in many ways to carry it out and not succeeded because that's how I achieved step by step and fully functional, sorry if some way I can not explain to clearly as I do not speak English and I'm using a translator, and hopefully serve them again, I just do it to help them all and hopefully once and for all of the annoying screen flicker go ...

• How can I reproduce my screen flicker so they'll believe me?

The intermittent nature of the annoying screen flicker on my Macbook makes it difficult to show a tech that it is a real problem and not some figment of my imagination. Does anybody know of a "sure fire" way of reproducing it? I have been able to recreate the rapid dimming and brightening of my Macbook screen by moving the brightness indicator all the way to the left and then bumping it up one click. This only works sometimes and it only works when I do it by clicking and dragging on the ball on the display screen in system prefs. It doesn't work by using f1 and f2. I made a video of my screen while it was flickering and put the video on the desktop. I'm sending it in as soon as my box arrives on Tuesday. They're also replacing my stained top case. I hope they will look at the video and at least test the inverter and cable to see if they're the problem. Any help with how to encourage them would be greatly appreciated.
macbook Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I am the victim of this problem also. The screen flickering & brightness of the screen suddenly fade to low intensity. The screen flickering happened everytime I use my MacBook.
May MacBook was the initial Jun 2006 version.
I already get those problems (a) sudden shutdown (replace the logic board), (b) palm rest area discoloration (change the bottom case), (c) power adaptor pin contact problem (replace the new one), (d) poor performance of battery life (awaiting confirmation from local Apple support, 180cycle max. charge only 50% of initial capacity) & (e) screen flicker issue (today just send in my MacBook for them to do diagnostic).
I really lost confident with my MacBook.
Should I request a replacement of entire MacBook?
My warranty period will be expired mid of next month & the are asking me to purchase the apple protection plan. But, I claim that the unit is poor in initial build quality & why I should considered the plan. It is unfair to me.
If the MacBook is in good condition then I will consider the plan for support another 2 years (fair), not in this reverse way.
Anybody please guide me how to pursue this matter.
I previously own an iBook G4 & PowerBook G4 TI don't have these problem at all.

• PDA screen flicker when updating control properties

Hi all,
I'm developing a mobile application for Windows Mobile 5 using LabVIEW 2009 SP1 and the Mobile Module. After coming to terms with many of the limitations, I've got a simple menu driven interface working. The interface consists of a transparent 240x320 picture control to which I draw the menu item text using the Draw Text At Point VI, along with an icon representing the menu item. Behind this picture control is a second picture control which contains the selection graphic to show which menu item is highlighted.
The problem I'm now facing is an annoying screen flicker every time a control property for the selection graphic is set. Specifically when the user navigates the menu using the up/down arrows on the device, the menu selection on the screen is moved using the Position->Top property to move it to highlight the correct menu item. Whenever this property is set, the whole screen flashes white and redraws.
Presumably this is due to the top level picture control being redrawn when the underlying control is updated (which makes perfect sense), but I wish it wasn't so noticeable.
So a couple of questions:
1. Is there any way to enable double-buffering of the display from the Mobile Module or on the device itself?
2. Is my picture control behind picture control design flawed? I would use a system listbox for the menu but it's a bit ugly, and doesn't support icons/symbols under the Mobile Module. Other limitations of the Module Mobile (like string controls that can't have transparent backgrounds) led me to use picture controls as the best overall solution.
Cheers,
Michael

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
I just did a day's worth of testing using C# and .NET for Windows Mobile (in Visual Studio 2005) and was able to reproduce the same interface without any flickering issues. Not having to poll the device's hardware buttons is also a positive
The key is to override the main form's OnPaintBackground() method.
From "Crafting Smartphone User Interfaces Using .NET Compact Framework":
OnPaintBackground
This method needs to be over ridden to prevent the OS from repainting the background each time the user navigates the ListView, causing flicker. If you don't need a background then just override this method but provide no implementation.
So it looks like I'll be doing things in C# for this project. As the mobile device won't be used for data acquisition, the Mobile Module isn't a necessity. I just hope .NET's serial functionality is as good as LabVIEW's!
