Complaint about DVD writer...

i think the weakness point of apple product especially macbook is on their DVD writer... i have been using Macbook since macbook unibody white colour, then change to Mac book pro 2.5 gb, then now i change again to macbook pro 2.9 ghz... and all of them my problem is always on the DVD writer... they stop functioning after like 1 year i owned each of my macbook... this happend again and again... i thought i have a bad luck with the dvd writer for my 1st macbook.. then after my 2nd macbook it happend again i still thinking it's a coincidence... but now not again !!!! my 3rd macbook dvd writer giving up again.... I am not an abusive type especially in using my DVD writer bec i didnt burn cd frequently... i didnt listen audio with cd/dvd....or i also didnt watch movie through dvd .... so i can consider myself not a frequent user of this dvd wirter but still it broken easily means that the quality of the DVD writer in Apple macbook is very very bad quality... can you do something to fix / change the manufacturer of ur DVD....i really really disappointed....
thank you

Thats because youre either
A: filling them with dust
B: mistreating them in loading a disk
The superdrive is made by Panasonic actually, and is very reliable.
new ones are only $39, by the way
Apple doesnt put DVD burners in ANY current Macbook , so its not even a concern  (except for still carrying the older model macbook).
means that the quality of the DVD writer in Apple macbook is very very bad quality.
Actually having opened many of them, 9 times out of 10, its a dirty lens / dusty.
Theyre made very well.

I put in a blank CD-R and iTunes tries to read it, then ejects it and say insert a blank CD.
Diagnostics report says it's a chip issue?? Only iTunes is having an issue. If I put in a CD-R that is already written to, then iTunes can read it fine and copy in the files from the CD.

    Drive is empty.
The last failed audio CD burn had error code -128(0xffffff80). It happened on drive E: HP DVD Writer 740b on -128(0xffffff80) media at speed 0X.

I have been through many threads on here about the superdrives not burning any DVD's.  It doesn't seem to be a matter of brand.  Whenever I use Toast or Disk Utility to burn files/images, etc, the drive always fails with an error.  Many posts have said the drives are bad, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  I think there is some problem with Mountain Lion because until I upgraded, I didn't have any issues.
    Reasoning:
    1) I had no issues with snow leopard or previous issues
    2) I have a windows VM under parallels which burns DVDs perfect and rather speedily, no errors whatsoever and I have burned over 20 DVDs with no problems, so it's not the hardware.
Not that I want to always have to fire up my windows VM to burn DVDs, but that seems to be the answer for now until Apple addresses the issue with burning software under Mountain Lion

  • Qill my mac accept any IDE/ATAPI interface DVD writer?

    Hello,
I'm currently seeking to upgrade my Quicksilver's 1x Superdrive to a newer, faster DVD writer. I was looking at a Lightscribe 20x DVD writer to transform the painfully slow burning sessions into quicker put-on-DVD archival making.
+(RAW files take a lot of place on a HDD and slow burning sessions are now the weakest link in my workflow — a new DVD burner is a must until I change my whole computer somewhere in the following year...)+
Now since most online retailers provide only minimum information about their products, you generally know which versions of Windows will support the drive, but when it comes to Mac OS X... usually, there's nothing to confirm that the drive will work on a Mac or not!
Now the question is: will any IDE/ATAPI interface DVD burner fit in my G4 Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz or do I need to look for a drive that specifically supports OS X? (Like an external USB / Firewire drive, for instance).
Any feedback on that would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Need to replace DVD writer - available options for 2010?

    Hi guys,
Usual problem, my old DVD writer Pioneer DVR 106D is starting to get choosy about what it reads. I've seen the 112D and 116D as recommended replacements and I've read a lot about installation. But these are old models now. It seems the 118L also works, though installers document some strange problems, and even that is being phased out.
I'm in the UK - what model or models should I buy to install in my G5 (OSX 10-5-8)? would like something predictable and proven to work!
    andy

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
A drive that meets your requirements of "predictable" (reliable) and "proven to work" is the Samsung SH-S series drive.
The drives get good reviews, and Mac users have no problems with the drives.
They are also readily available in the UK.

  • DVD writer trashes out at 3/4 - 7/8 done - L505D-S6947

    L505D-S6947
Win Vista 32 bit w/ service pack 2 and all updates installed
Has 6GB as 4GB Crucial and 2GB Samsung, so I am wondering can memory >4GB and a 32 bit OS be somehow causing this?
The DVD writer is making coasters.  It will burn about 3/4 of the way to the dege of the disk, then quits with an error message, and a question about is the disk is scratched or dirty.   This has happened repeatedly.  I ma using Memorex DVD-R  16x  and have tried burn speeds lower than 8x and still the ame thing.
The DVD drive has been used very little, so I'm sure it's not dead from over use, haha.  Does it need cleaned?
This is the first time I've used Memorex. I had a stockpile of old DVD disks like Maxell and then all worked fine.  I want to back up my data and also make ne new set of Restore disks before I wipe and restore this computer.
Has anyone seen this problem before?    The disk is formatted, some of the file folders are readable on another machine and the Toshiba L505D.  Other files appear to be corrupted.  So, I am getting partially successful burns, and succesful formats.
eta:  I found and tried http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

I "recovered" this computer to factory install, updated all Win Vista OS and Toshiba files.    Tried burning Sony CD-R disks, and made the 4-DVD recovery set without a hitch.    The problem was any or all of:
--  bad or inconsistent quality media
--  corrupted OS (what I really think it was)
--  dirty laser  (not very likely)
L505D-S6947 runs much smoother after the complete "housecleaning,"  haha.

  • Satellite A200-10Z: How to know if my DVD writer support Labelflash

    Hi,
I have Toshiba Satellite A200-10Z that came with supermulti DVD writer model HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N, I don't know from which manufacturer this model!!
Does anyone know if this model support Labelflash?! ?:|

Googling around I found info that this drive must be from Hitachi. Unfortunately I didnt find any info about Labelflash.

  • MacBook Pro 17" appears to have 2x DVD writer?

I have just recieved my MacBook Pro 17". Burning a Dvd it could only run to 2x. Media is 1-8x so I went into the about mac window and it tells me that I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846: not capable of dual layer, or DVD +R That was the same as my old Powerbook. I transfered over firewire could the diagnostics software have got confused or have Apple fitted an old Dvd writer?

I also transferred over firewire. My DVD player
according to the profiler is MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846,
the exact same as you had seen. What is the model
intended for the new MBP 17?
That must be the correct model I think. However the capabilities was wrong, after zapping the pram it showed DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL before zapping the pram it showed only DVD-Write: -R, -RW
I have now sucessfully burn't a dual layer dvd, so I am happy for the time being.

  • IDVD and Lacie D2 DVD Writer

The Lacie d2 is an external dvd writer dvd+rw Dual Layer. It has both usb 2.0 and firewire connections. I am using firewire right now.
I reran another burn attempt last nite (all night!) and it is stuck/stalled, actually iDVD is stalled right now as I type this, at Multiplexing and Burning, "time remaining: about one minute" and says done, but the progress bar is just one hair away from being complete.
Clearly after two tests I can see that iDVD is doing everything but burning the disc. What is wrong?
I would rather not make a disc image because I tried and it says it needs way to much disc space to make the image.
Can someone help me figure out why iDVD will not finalize and burn dvds to completion? I ran two iDVD burn attempt and twice the program seems to stall, best way I characterize what happens since the program does not freeze. It says multiplexing and burning, and says under a minute left and even says done! But, both times I have cancelled, because it sat overnight waiting to finalize, and when cancelling the disks are coming out still blank with no data written.

How much available HD space do you have right now?
What kind of media and what brand are you using?
Find a way to clear more HD space. You can clear video files already burned to DVD-R media, burn your iPhoto Library to DVD to clear more space , or even consider clearing languages you won't need on your system with an app like Monolingual. No problems will be created by removing unneeded language files (however it's highly recommend you avoid removing architectures on any intel mac).

  • Why have my DVD-Write privileges changed?!

Yesterday, my system profiler showed me this below.
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:
    Firmware Revision: BP10
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
Today, it says I can only write to -R, -RW.

    DVD-Write: -R, -RW

How come?! Also, even with the stats from yesterday, I already couldn't burn to +R's anymore, meanwhile, my +RW's can still be read, erased, and re-burned. I don't understand what is going on. How do I go about remedying this situation? I am also unable to read any of my old burned copies of movies on +R's. All blank or burned +R's whirr a bit in the drive and then get ejected. Regular store bought movies can still be read. I have been burning to +Rs for over a year now with no problem and have gone thru like 200 +Rs without a hitch until a couple of days ago.
I've already gotten screwed over by Repairtech's fraudulent 3-year extended warranty and my Apple 1-year warranty ran out over a month ago.
    Please help!!!

ok, that changed the dvd-write privileges back to what they were in system profiler, but still unable to detect +r blank & burned dvds. what can i do now? or might u have an idea of what the problem could be? everything else able to be detected. i have tried hp, verbatim & mitsubishi +r's. can't detect my burned hp & verbatim +r's anymore & can't detect blank verbatim (anymore either) & mitsubishi (new brand i'm trying) +r's.
    your advice is much appreciated!

how about the HD DVD Burning .. should i buy HD DVD Burner or the mac pro DVD Writer will solve this problem? and it will burn HD DVD SL-15GB and DL-30GB ?
You cannot burn a 15 or 30 Gig DVD from DVD SP and it is not supported by DVD SP. You can build those to a hard drive for replication
also what is the basic steps to creat the HD project in HD DVD not the DVD 5 and compatible with the toshiba player?
    Best Regard.
You can make a HD DVD on the DVD 5 which will play with the Toshiba and it will give HD quality (and will not play on an SD player) video results, though you cannot author the extras that HD has (the new features in HD as compared to SD DVD), pretty much menus and playback of video. The steps above will create the DVD 5. Have not tried writing to a DVD 9 size for more running time

  • Two complaints about Behance

    Some complaints about Behance Jobs:
    (1) The filters don't work. I set the job filters to "United States" and "NY," and the first five results were in Alpharetta, GA; Cookeville, TN; Stockholm,  Sweden; and St. Louis, MO.
    (2) My second complaint is that not only has Behance removed the section where an applicant can attach or write a cover letter, but now they won't even let the applicant attach a résumé. So much for good UX! Now Behance Jobs is useless to me.

    Hello Duke,
Thanks for writing and sorry to hear that. To address your questions:
1 - can you try this again? Seems as though this was a fluke, since this feature is defintiely working - please see the below.
2 - You're correct that this has been removed - the focus is now on the work itself, so you will apply with your Portfolio of Creative Work when applying for a job.
Hope this helps and sorry to hear that you're frustrate! Let us know if anything else comes up.

There are tons of complaints about the WiFi interface on the iPhone, with errors and problems similar to what you're seeing on the iPad.

As a retired network device driver writer, I realize that the same device driver is probably running on both platforms. So more than likely, you'll see the same bugs on both platforms. Unless we're dealing with a hardware issue.
I would guess that the iPhone/iPad losing it's WiFi password issue is a software bug.

  • Samsung Portable DVD writer SE-208 & connecting it to my iPad & TV

First should say I live in England - tried to connect to A UK forum/discussion, site kept bringing me back to the USA!
The internal DVD drive on my  iMac suddenly stopped working, so I bought an external Apple DVD drive [for about $100] , which turned out to be incompatible with pre- 2011 iMacs.
Then I bought the Samsung Portable DVD Writer SE-208, ($30!)I plugged in, it played! Watched a DVD movie immediately. Perfect.
I wanted also to use it: (a) to connect  my iPad to a Grundig TV with a HDMI 1 socket (plus AV, scart, & universal sockets) to mirror the iPad, &
    (b) to connect the Samsung itself to the TV for playing DVDS.
Seemed simple; I'd need an iPad to HDMI adapter, & then an HDMI to HDMI cable, (pref gold plated, with FerriteCore)!
100s available, looked through reviews -  & found some people warning that sellers/producers are claiming their adapters to be compatible with all iPads & phones, which they're not, won't with latest iPad.
So... emailed a company that sells a wide range, & asked exactly which ones I needed to buy. Their 2 line reply wasn't reassuring!
They were vague about mirroring iPads, but were absolutely certain that the Samsung Portable definitely can't play DVDs through a TV. Not the impression I got from the tech spec when I bought it!
Any suggestions? (I know system's different in US, but I just saw a thread here about this model of Samsung - just wouldn't let me ask a question! )
Will I be able to mirror iPad, using cables I mentioned?
I know this isn't a Mac question, but just in case....is there any way to get this Samsung playing DVD through TV? If not, is there an alternative that'll do that & work so well with my iMac?
Finally, (phew!) I've always understood there's no way to connect an external optical DVD drive to an iPad - a friend just told me I'm wrong... in this case I'd really love to be!  Is it really possible?
Kind regards, and thanks for any help anyone can offer.

You do not need to put the DVD in the chain to mirror your iPod to your TV. You merely need the Apple digital adapter and an HDMI cable. You connect the adapter to the iPad, one end of the HDMI cable to that adapter and the other to an HDMI input on your Grundig.
You cannot connect the DVD to the iPad.
You really need to look at Samsung's forum for help with your drive.
There is no UK version of the ASC.
    Happy Christmas to you.

  • My DVD writer's drive on my Pavillion DV6000 stopped functioning. It's listed on My computer. Help?

    Hi,
The dvd writer is listed in My Computer (Vista Home premium) but it does not work. Pushing the eject button only flashes but nothing happens. The eject function from anywhere in vista does not work. I get an I/O error. Any ideas?

    Thank you!
I wouldn't waste the speed of firewire on only a DVD/CD Reader (ie a DVD/CD ROM) - if that's what you're talking about. I would say that it would be the Recorder/Burner and recording software that would benefit the most from the speed increase, since it's doing the hardest work.
Unless it was that you wanted to put the DVD/CD ROM (the reader) inside the Mac and you wanted to use the other burner elsewhere (then putting the Pioneer in the now vacant FW case). If not, then you already have two good drives, why waste money on duplicating what you already have. All an external Firewire anything is is an external firewire case with a drive of some sort inside it (whether hard drive or dvd/cd, etc), and I've often found that the quality of the internal drives of many external cases leave a lot to be desired. And you often pay more for a completed setup like that. I prefer to put together my own - I usually save money and as noted before, get much better quality overall. So just get yourself a good Firewire 5.25" case (the LaCie ones for example are beautiful and fast - but there are others). Just make sure that it can handle the DVD aspect though, some of the older FW cases can't. I'd recommend looking thru these discussions for other posts on this topic (chipset speeds too) - there has already been a lot of good input on this subject.
But whatever you decide, I'd definitely recommend having the burner in the firewire case.
