Complaint about search within MSDN

My complaint involves the really SUCKY search facility on MSDN.  Come on, guys, really?
I was trying to locate this page, about MCSD Certification:
www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcsd-certification.aspx
and to start with I was on MSDN, entering search terms like “MCSD” and “certification”.  And there were semi-relevant results, but nothing to the point of the page above.  A lot of “social.msdn.microsoft.com” pages for Forums etc.  I didn’t
go past the first page, as it seemed things were getting less and less relevant.
So where did I find the page I was looking for?  I had to go to Bing.  I put “MCSD” as the search term and got my desired result as the second item in the results.
Either the Certification web team needs to see that its pages are better indexed on MSDN, or the MSDN web team needs to freaking FIX their search functionality.  I suspect the latter, as I usually find that searches within MSDN leave
a lot to be desired.

Yep, the forums search feature isn't all that useful. It doesn't allow you to use AND within a search.
There's a thread going on in the Suggestions forum asking for this tool to be fixed, you may want to add your voice (and vote) there:

  • Where can I find details about searching within my history / bookmarks

I'm looking for things like using negative (-) to exclude items from search, using AND, OR, other tricks, details like that.

    You can't do that in Firefox.<br />
In the library and sidebar you can only do simple AND type of searches and search the title and location field.
You would have to export the bookmarks and history to an HTML or CSV file and open that file is a spreadsheet or other program that allows such more precise selections.

  • Tip of the Day : Search within the log window

    hi
Recently my JDeveloper 11g (11.1.1.0.1) showed me a Tip of the Day about "Search within the log window", as shown in tip-of-the-day-search-log-window.png.
It read : "You can search within any of the contents of log windows. Click within the text of the window and click Ctrl+F. A search window appears so that you can enter your search criteria."
The tip also shows an image of a "Messages - Log" panel with a transparent "Search Messages Log" dialog on top.
If I try this on the "Messages - Log" panel, I get the transparent dialog. But if I try this on the "Running: DefaultServer - Log", I don't get the transparent dialog (although search seams to be possible if I just start typing after pressing Ctrl+F).
Not very consistent, or what exactly is the intended behaviour here?
    many thanks
    Jan Vervecken

    fyi
This seems to have improved in JDeveloper 11.1.1.2.0 (see also log-search2-select.png in the context of forum thread "11.1.1.2.0 : log search : no match found").

  • IFS WITHIN and ABOUT search operators

From the WebUI, how do you use the WITHIN and ABOUT search
    operators?
From the File Contents field, I enter "ABOUT water" and I get
IFS-22012: Search Failed. Invalid Query may have been specified.
Ideally, I would like to use the WITHIN operator to search on
content in a specific XML tag. I think it should work like this:
    water WITHIN <para>
    Thanks for your help.
    Robert

    Try: water WITHIN para
Take away the tag brackets. In other words if you need to
search for the string 'water' within the <para></para> tag set
use the above in the File Contents search box.

  • Search in MSDN forums

I need to search a MSDN forum like "Windows Embedded Compact Native Application Development". Let's say I want to search for "project properties". I've selected the forum at the left pane. Now I entered the search phrase in the field
    "Search forums questions".
All I get as answer where any forum posts that contain either the word
project or the word properties but nothing with "project properties". Is there any sensible approach to qualify the search?

    Hi,
Currently there is no way to use AND in the search feature. There have been plenty of complaints about this, hopefully we'll get an updated search feature in the future.

  • Adobe Reader X and searching within PDFs in Outlook 2007

    Hello,
Is it possible to search within pdfs attached to emails in Outlook 2007 via the search box in Outlook?  I currently have Adobe Acrobat Reader X installed and Outlook 2007.  Is there an iFilter available for this functionality within Reader X or would I need to either go back to Reader 9 or upgrade to a newer version to have this capability?
    Thanks.

This may help a few of you here.
    I'm running IE 8 and Adobe Reader X on a WIN64Bit  system.
Reader X wouldn't open an embedded  PDF with IE8 64BIT. AR X seems to like an older version of IE.
Go to your START menu and you should see "Internet Explorer" and "Internet Explore (64-bit)".
Open a window with the "Internet Explorer", not the (64-bit).
In the IE8 window you'll see a "?" on the tool bar. Open it and click on "About Internet Explorer".
You should NOT SEE "64-bit Edition".
If you don't see "64-Bit Edition", go and try to view the PDF again.
It works for me and it seems I'll have to live with it until there's a patch for 64-Bit.

  • Wish you could search within a podcast page.

Here's my suggestion for Apple: Be able to search within a podcast page on the iTunes Store. So if I'm on a podcast page and I wanted to find that episode that talked about the XYZ Widget, I could search for it only in that particular podcast.

Hmmm, you're right. I always assumed that searches went through the entire listing of episodes of a podcast. But it looks like it only searches the titles and descriptions. Maybe Apple should have an "advanced" option for searching of podcasts episodes titles and descriptions. Mike

  • SQL error for searches within Arch forums

    Hi guys,
Since last night, when ever I try to run a search, whether it be a pre-defined search like New Posts or last 12h, or a keyword search within the search page, I get an error:

These two have to do with Firefox update, they override your home page for one restart and should be unrelated to your problem.

  • [Desktop][Your Music] Search within Your Music only, much faster

If I want to jump to a song in my saved music (Your Music) I don't want to have to wade through all the other artists on spotify, playlists, profiles, etc. that you get when you do a full search. Furthermore I don't want to wait the minimum half-second round trip for the search results to appear. It makes the whole operation feel sluggish and puts me off using search. Try typing a word into iTunes search. The moment you lift your finger off the key it's already found the matching song. As far as I can tell that's simply not possible in Spotify. I'm not sure what the best design is. I think there should be a way to do either a global search, or a search within your music. The latter should be possible to run entirely on your computer/device to make it nice and zippy.

Also, Winamp had an awesome shortcut for this: the J key. It brought up a window where you could literally type a letter or two from any part of the title, artist or album that you want. Hit enter and it starts playing. Or hit alt-q and it's queued. See it in the search results but it's not selected? Press the up and down arrows to select. Total time required - about three seconds. That's the kind of search ergonomics I would like to see in Spotify.

  • Performing a search within multiple .as files

In Flash CS4 is it possible to perform a search within
multiple .as files, or an entire project?
    thanks!

I'm don't know if that's possible on CS4, but you can search
    using the OS searching tools:
I'm not sure about Mac OS, but on Windows, you can click on
Start, Search, and under the Containing Text field, you can type in
'trace' (without quotes). Then click on the drop-down box under
    'Look In:' and select Browse...
Browse to the location of your project and select it, then
click the Search Now button to begin searching through the files
    there.
It will at least tell you which file(s) have trace in them.
Once you know that, then you can search through the file using CS4
to find the actual command. It would be much more convenient to
have that as a feature in CS4, but I don't know if it is.

  • Search within iPhoto by any word or combination of words

    Hello!
I want to notice, and may be in the future (I hope soon), Apple will add a very useful improvements in the search within iPhoto.
When I search anything in iPhoto I need to enter the search condition the same as it was entered in the photo description or tagged a face. For example when I want to find all photos with someone's name "John Doe" I need to enter in search field John… and so on with big "J", but when I want to search just with "john" (with small "j" symbol) or by last name "doe" - the search returns nothing! Or when I want to search any combinations of words that I entered in description of the photo with any symbols register ("A" or "a") that doesn't work too! The same with Face tags when I want to tag someone I need to enter the name right the same way it entered in the address book, not any symbols that persist in the contact name.
Didn't think anybody it is useful feature must be improved?
    Thank you all!

    Hello Larry.
Of course I'm using this feature too. Generally I talk about search conditions/expressions. By the way in smart albums the same problem with search expressions. When I want create a smart album with my friend "Smith" for example and in the Smart album search criterias enter "smith" with small "s" then my friend doesn't appear in this album while I don't change the name as it witten in address book "Smith" with big "S".
    You see?

  • Who do I contact to file a complaint about wifi on my new IPhone5 and poor customer service at the Apple Store in Leawood, KS

I am having problems connecting to wifi at home with my new IPhone 5.  I got it replaced today at the Apple Store after dealing with a rude customer service person yesterday and today.  They simply would not listen to me explain all the troubleshooting I have done.  I also have an Apple Airport Extreme base station router, Macbook Air, two IPads, IMac and my husband's IPhone 5 on this wifi system with no problems.  After talking to Apple Care yesterday, they told me to go to the store today to exchange my phone.  The customer service person argued with me that I would have the same problems even if I exchanged the phone.  This has been a very frustrating experience and after being a loyal "Apple" geek for many years, I'm seriously thinking about returning my IPhone 5 and getting a Samsung Galaxy S3!  This is totally unacceptable!  Tech support at Apple Care was great yesterday and that person actually listened to me unlike the two individuals at the Apple Store in Leawood, KS.  How do I file a complaint about the hassles at the Apple Store?

    Talk to the store manager.
    Regards.

  • How can I adjust the search bar to search within a specific website?

I used to use Chrome (still miss it a little bit), but Firefox has continually grown on me.
One feature I do miss from Chrome being able to search within a specific website from the search bar. For example, I was able to type in amazon.com, then pressing tab, and type in a specific search term, such as "The Terminator." When I pressed enter after typing "The Terminator," Chrome would automatically take me to Amazon's search results for "The Terminator."
And it wouldn't just be Amazon either; pretty much any site that had a searchable database, Chrome would be capable of utilizing this feature. Is there any way to replicate that in Firefox?

hello crachor, probably keyword search can offer you a similar functionality in firefox: [[How to search IMDB, Wikipedia and more from the address bar]]

  • How can I lodge a complaint about Adobe Flash Player?

How can I lodge a complaint about Adobe Flash Player? When I updated Adobe Flash Player this morning it also installed a McAfee scanning software without any warning or notification. I find this totally unacceptable. But I cannot find any information on the Adobe website that will allow me to lodge my complaint. Which I also find totally unacceptable.
    Ho hum.

This is a an old complaint. I would have thoughtas much bad karma as Adobe has received would have stopped this practice espcially since it found that many time McAfeee either gets protection signatures wrong or cause more problems than it fixes.
I don't know whether mailto:[email protected] is still effective.
At one time a disgruntled Adobe products user created a FaceBook or twitter page. And many in past have claimed when there complaints got ignored or laughed at by Adobe. They suddenly got action whe airring their complaint on this FaceBook or Twitter page.
There should be a big warning Box stating:
Adobe is about to install a package Called McAfee  on your computer. If you do not wish to instal click checkmark here.
Do you wish have Adobe install Products not requested on your computer yes__  or no__ please use a √
And to adhere to wishes of the customer.
