Complementary still camera to use with my camcorder for use on my mutimedia projects

Hi, I use a Canon XA10 camcorder for my movie work. The XA10 also has an impressive still photo image capability, but I also need a smaller sized still camera for capturing stills without gathering the attention like camcorders sometimes do. So I need a smaller point-and-shoot for this kind of still work, but with similar capabilities (e.g.. excellent image quality, colour quality, point focus, depth of field, etc) offered by my XA10. What would a suggested choice for a small still camera to complement my great XA10?
Many thanks!

Did your search find this one:

I don't have it and am suspicious of how well a $20 inspection camera will function, but it was the very first one I found with a review from a Mac user.

  • Suggestions for Still Camera?

I am thinking about getting a small megapixel Still camera. Igor's work with Stills has inspired me.
If you have an inexpensive still camera (not part of a camcorder) that you are happy with, let's hear about it. I realize there are various price ranges, but I am leaning towards a sub $500 model.
    Steven

    Steven,
My wife and I really enjoy her Canon PowerShot S230 Digital Elph.
It's a 3 megapixel model that is the size of a pack of cigarettes. Largest image dimensions are 2048x1536.
The optical zoom (I think it's a Zeiss lens) is the 35mm equivalent of a 35mm - 70mm lens. It has an LCD screen and an optical viewfinder that follows the zoom.
It uses CompactFlash media. It has multiple manual and semi-automatic modes and settings, including White Balance and +/- 2 EV exposure compensation. It has 2 light metering patterns and an extremely effective "intelligent" autofocus system. It can assist you with multiple shots if you want to stitch together a panorama or you can change to macro mode and photograph that huge bee on the flower, just before it stings you.
    Etc.
So far, not having a longer telephoto lens capability hasn't been an issue at all. We still have my old pro Pentax LX film camera for the long shots. We've even switched to the Elph for our family portraits.
I never thought "convenience" would win out over "versatility", but it has. My wife takes the darn thing everywhere she goes. And the S230 isn't missing much in the versatility department, either.
    Jeff
EDIT: I forgot to mention the price. We got ours for right at $400 from B&H.

  • Ipod touch 2nd gen Still camera fail??

So i have this crappy computer as a temp while my better one is getting fixed. I plug in my ITouch and nothing happens.... it doesn't charge.... it does nothing....except, on the computer screen it says that the new hardware is being installed. I wait and then it says fail to install still camera and i can't connect my ITouch to my computer... though i just tried it a couple times and it says "still camera installed successfully" then 2 minutes later it says the same as above... any one else have this problem?? or is it just this sad computer?
    P.S. I hate Vista....let that be known ^^

Those KB articles probably won't help. I have the same problem with my 4G iPod and my XP computer. I was on the phone for two hours today with Tech Support. They couldn't solve the problem but promised to get back to me in a few days. Just for diagnosis: open up Device Manager > Scanner and Cameras (or similar in Vista) with the iPod connected. Do you have the Digital Still Camera listed with an "!"? If so, read the error. Is it Code 38? If so, it's the same problem I have. While you are there, you could try to Uninstall the Still Camera and then do a scan for new hardware to reinstall it. Didn't work for me, but perhaps it will for you.

  • Having problem with Premiere CS2 not recognising AVI from a still Camera?

Wow, My first time back to the forum in 3 month and it's all new!
Since I found "the" answer to a new problem I've encountered I'd like to share it.
I filmed part of a wedding with a little canon still camera (S3IS) on a 4 gb SD card and when I tried to import some of the clips (AVI) in PP2 it failed. A msg told me that my clips were either on the wrong format or corrupted! Strange because I have done it b4 whithout problem and also the first 20 clips were ok. as for the others they opened normally on windows media player and also played ok on movie maker. I also tried to load them into SceneAnalyser Live but without success. However I decided to make a movie out of my problem clips on Movie Maker and ended up with a MVW file that loaded ok into premiere!  I tried to change the extention to this format but no go! I wonder if I converted all my faulty AVI files in this format wether it would work, most likely I imagine as I think this is what I actually did, but the long way around.Anyway it's quite a relief to know I will be able to use my clips.
    I'm sure someone knows what it's happening here...Eddy r u listening?

and edited them in iMovie and then burned them onto a DVD using iDVD.
I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally
    and vertically.
I shoot with a camcorder Canon Vixia HF10. The camera has been set to deliver HD quality (1920x1080). But I have accidentally filmed with a frame rate of 60 (?).
When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

This camera is NOT on Apple's list of supported cameras to use with iMovie 11. Nor is the camera Canon SD3500 as mentioned by you, I thought ...
Do you think I could use the Coolpix S8100 camera as well with iMovie 11 ?
    Or could I meet a problem ?
In my opinion, the camera will work with iMovie '11, HOWEVER....
I have a Canon SX30IS bridge camera [that is, not a camcorder], and the HD videos work absolutely fine on iMovie with one - for me - important problem.
As my camera is also not supported, when any number of short video files are loaded in together, iMovie will not understand the sequence they were taken in, and MAY load them in a fairly random order into a project.
This is not a problem where one or two files are concerned, but where there are more, it can be a major problem if you want them used in sequence.
You either have to load them into the project one by one, manually, or be able to identify clearly from the thumbnails which is which, or the order will be all wrong. It IS possible to relate what you see as a thumbnail back to the original file, but only one file at a time, so you can't use the thumbnails to work out the order, if the images shown don't do that for you.
I have used videos from 5 unsupported digital cameras, and even an 8mm cine conversion file quite successfully, so I have no doubt that the Nikon will also work.

  • Best camcorder for use with iMovie 08?

Yes. I have done a search.
I would like to find a good quality camcorder, preferably hard drive, that I can also use to record directly onto iMovie 08 (like you can with the built-in camera).
Help. Any ideas would be welcome.
Sadly I bought a Sony DCR SR85 60GB HDD Camcorder because my videographer friends told me not to buy anything but a Sony.
I was astounded to find out that I was unable to record directly onto iMovie. Oh well. Further iMovie has to convert the file after it is downloaded from the camera's HD. I'm disappointed. It's on eBay now.
PS: I have now seen the list http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1014#2 Thanks.

You can do that with any FireWire camcorder - well, certainly in iMovie HD 6 and previous ..I haven't tested that in iMovie '08.
Sony aren't really in direct competition with Apple, as Apple don't make camcorders ..and you may remember that the head honcho from Sony burst onto the stage during SJ's MacWorld address the other year (2005..?) and was introduced by Steve as he announced iMovie HD, because Sony was overwhelming happy that iMovie could import hi-def material from Sony's new hi-def Z1 and FX1 cameras. Apple and Sony worked together to ensure that iMovie could handle hi-def video shot with Sony camcorders.
But perhaps I'm not the best person to respond here, as I don't think much of hard disc camcorders; the compression's higher than with miniDV tape, a head crash can mean that you lose your entire discful of video, it's often more finicky to import ..the only time I use a hard disc for recording video is if I use a 'FireStore' piggy-backed onto a miniDV camcorder.
A computer with a spinning hard disc inside is a fragile thing to use as a monitor, if your rig has to be moved: it's only sensible if you're in one fixed spot while you're recording. If I'm shooting with the camcorder on the end of a pole, I just run a video-out cable from the camera to a mini monitor (..or even to video glasses!..) so that I can see what I'm shooting with the remote camera: drop your Mac and you're really in trouble!
To use your Mac as a monitor, you should also first calibrate the Mac's screen so that its colours and brightness ("gamma") match that of the camcorder, otherwise you might adjust the camera to match what you see on the Mac, and end up with over-exposure, or the wrong colours.
So maybe you might rethink why you want to use your Mac as a monitor. And continuous capture to a Mac's internal disc while shooting may put too much strain on the system (..as the Mac will want to do various 'housekeeping' jobs while the video's coming in, such as indexing files, swapping memory to and from disc, etc). It may be better to capture to an external disc ..which Canons don't like to do: they like to be the only FireWire device in the circuit. But as you want to capture to a hard disc camcorder, maybe capture straight onto the Mac isn't what you have in mind.
So, all in all, why not think again about what exactly you want to do, and why. And Sonys work perfectly well with Macs, in my experience..
P.S: Any hi-def camcorder will need to have its video 'converted' during import into iMovie, as hi-def video is severely 'compressed' into a non-editable format, and it has to be uncompressed during import so that it can be edited. That's not just Sony camcorders; that's every type of hi-def. The conversion takes a lot of 'horse-power' during import, so shooting hi-def and simultaneously importing it in real time into iMovie can be difficult.
(..Maybe that's what you're trying to do, as you said "..I was astounded to find out that I was unable to record directly onto iMovie. Oh well. Further iMovie has to convert the file after it is downloaded from the camera's HD. I'm disappointed.." ..all hi-def has to be 'converted', standard-def miniDV tape doesn't, but standard-def AVCHD, as from a hard disc camcorder or a camcorder which records to internal memory chips or onto a miniDVD, does need conversion during import..)

  • Can anyone recommend a compatible DV camcorder for use with iMovie3?

This will be my 1st camcorder and only need to know if certain brands will/won't work with iMovie3 for simple family use. Any help will be much apprieciated! i'm on an Emac G4. thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions.
iMovie 3 is the buggiest version ever. See it you can get hold of iLife '04. iLife '04 contains iMovie 4 and iDVD 4. iMovie 4 is much more stable than iMovie 3. iDVD 4 has better picture quality than iDVD 3.
For both iMovie 3 and 4, you must have a "DV" camera that uses mini-DV tapes. None of them comes with a Firewire cable, so you must purchase one separately. Firewire is also called i.Link, IEEE1394 or DV.
You can buy any currently selling DV camera as they will all work.
If you are looking on the "used" market, avoid Samsung.
Finally, don't ever empty iMovie's trash in iMove 1-4. You may lose your project.
    Good luck.

  • Control Digital Still camera with Applescript?

While Canon (for example) provide an app to tether their cameras and make them take and upload pictures to a Mac, it does not appear that I can use Applescript to control that program.
I need to write custom script to take picture with a High resolution still camera, so I can call that script from a FileMaker Pro database application.
What High quality still camera have an API I can control form AS: or what other approach would work?

If an app has a scripting dictionary it will be in the list if you go to File>Open Dictionary, I personally don't know any but I think it is highly unlikely for a developer to bother with this kind of app.

  • Footage captured with a still camera

A friend recently captured a small video clip with a Kodak ultra-zoom still camera (5 megapixels, camera is a few years old) but the video needs to be rotated. Can iMovie 2009 do this? My friend has an older version of iMovie than I do. (I also have Final Cut Studio and QuickTime Pro and X). My friend reports that the video needs to be rotated (presumably 90 degrees) but he "Can't do it with regular Quick Time - I've tried - says I need to purchase Quick Time Pro in order to do that kind of editing!"
    Can iMovie help here?

Yes. Import into iPhoto. Then open iMovie. Let it generate thumbnails for iPhoto.
Then create an iMovie Project. Drag this clip from the iPhoto Event into the Project. Then use the Rotate tool.
Finally, you need to Share your movie.
There are good tutorials for all this available in the Help menu.

  • Importing videos shot with a digital camera (consumer still camera)

    Hi all,
I am having trouble with having to render any part that's changed even by a frame. I've got a Fuji F30 digital still camera that I used to take some 320x240 videos that I wanna just splice together. I've tried all kinds of sequence profile changes to the Audio/Video Settings (Photo JPEG compression, Movie A, None, H.264, and all kinds of audio settings) and testing each one by converting the file in FCP's Media Browser to match. Always the red "unrendered" bar.
Am I missing something? Or if it came from a digital still camera, am I just "stuck"?

Ok, I answered my own question thru trial and error. The answer, for anyone stuck like I was, is that once you have a sequence open, the A/V settings of that sequence are not changed by "Audio/Video Setup." You have to right-click on the Sequence in the browser and change the "Settings...", or click on the Sequence and choose "Sequence > Settings..." from the menu.
Silly newb. Do I get points for answering my own question?

  • Can I use iSight as a still camera?

    Hello!
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 17". I wish to know whether I can use iSight as a still camera or not.
Actually, when I was setting my MacBook up and came to the setting where it asked for my display picture, I hastily clicked a very unusable picture of myself and proceeded with the rest of the settings. I thought I would change it later. I then installed Microsoft MSN Messenger and it displayed that stupid picture as the display picture. I changed my User Account picture after that to a better one but MSN Messenger still is displaying the same picture as the difault picture. How do I change it? I don't even know where Mac stores the User Account picture. So, I wanted to click another picture of myself with the iSight camera and store it in the pictures folder so that I could change MSN Messenger's display picture. Is it possible? If not, how else can I change MSN Messenger's picture to the User Account picture on my OS?
Sorry for the huge rant and please do reply ASAP!
    Thank you!

    Hi Cool 'n' Casual,
    Sort of.
You have PhotoBooth on there which will give a warning before it click the pic and flashes the screen to improve lighting when it does.
It can be a "normal" pic rather than any of the specials.
iChat itself can take a snapshot. It can be done from the Buddy List and clicking on your current Buddy pic and following the buttons. Or from the menu bar in Video.
Photobooth stores the pics and can link directly to iChat to post a pic.
Your Recent Pictures are stored in Users/(your account)/Library/Images/Recent iChat Pictures.
It is likely that you will have to navigate to this folder if you want MSN to display the same pic.
By default iChat will display the Pic you selected for your Mac user account when you set the computer up as seen in the Address Book for your Me card. It is probably this one that MSN is displaying.
