Complete loss of photos

hello all,
Any help would be greatly appreciated here.
Am running an iMac with Os x 10.4.11. I had approx 2000 photos in my iPhoto '08 library.
One day, I notice all the thumbnails are blank and the library meta data tells me I have hundreds of events and 2000+ photos - yet it is not possible to see any of these. This happened four weeks ago.
now realising the photos are in trouble I now set about finding them. I have followed these steps;
Disk utility found an error on my disk - ran Utilities from the boot disk and repaired the main drive. Repair was successful.
Created a new library in iPhoto - no improvement, meta data says library is empty.
Downloaded iPhoto Library Manager - no change, pictures still missing.
Downloaded Stellar Phoenix 3.5 and set a sector by sector search. Found 700+ jpegs including album art & mac images, some pictures recovered. No other jpegs1,2, or 3 to be found.
I am assured the photos were not deleted maliciously by another user and suspect the work done in repairing the drive may have impaired my chances of recovering the files.
I would like to know how this happened and more importantly if there are any options available to find the missing pictures, and No, I don't have Time Machine yet.
Any help appreciated.

Then I'm afraid your photos are gone.
The question is what removed them from there?
This wasn't done by iPhoto
... the library meta data tells me I have hundreds of events and 2000+ photos...
as iPhoto thinks they are still there. You need to search out a 3rd party culprit - human or software - for this. I'd start with any back up software you have running on the machine.
You can also check for recovering the files from the HD using an app like File Salvage

  • I'm at a complete loss...

I'm using Windows 7.  Recently installed 11 and seemed to have lost all my audiobooks and hated the new format.  So, I decided to revert back to an older version. I unistalled itunes and reinstalled 10.7 but then all my books were gone.  I called carbonite and they restored my books.  Two days later, I was unable to restore them back given the instructions from carbonite.  After a bit of effort I found I needed to "unhide" each and every book under "add folder to library" in the file menu.  It seems to be working, but my books are not set up the way they the used to be. I used to have a nice three column block under my menu.  It contained, "Spoken or audio" in the first column, Author/Artist in the second, and in the third each book the author wrote was listed.  I could choose one book, put it into my play list and then to my ipod.  Try as I might I can no longer sort like this and at a complete loss what to do.  Right prior to downloading 11 everything was fine and grouped just the way I liked it.  If anyone has any ideas, I would be grateful.  I've tried the sorting by artist and that doesn't set it the way it used to be.  Thank you in advance.

    Hi someotherguy,
Can you help me with this problem?
I hit enter to stop the normal boot and then appear a window to select different options:
    - F1: Enter BIOS
    - Another one I don't remember
    - F12: Select bootable device
Any of the menus I've tryied to enter I got a message afterwards saying:
    "Intel Boot Agent GE v1.3.81
    PXE 2.1 Build 091 WfM 2.0)"
And just stays there. Nothing happens.
After pressing F1 or F12 or other, I got a small message saying press CTRL+S to enter the setup menu. If I press it, I enter in a menu just to change the amount of time that message appear and if I want it or not.
    Can you help me?
I need to activate the virtualization on the BIOS in order to setup virtual machines!

  • At a complete loss. Worried data is gone for good. Trying to fix disk by booting Disk Utility from installation DVD but disk ejects. Help!

    Hello Comunity,
I'm at a complete loss and I hope you could help me.
The machine I have is I believe an early 2006 iMac model. (Model identifier 4,1 if I recall correctly).
Awhile ago I installed Snow Leopard on the machine but have since begun encountering serious problems (but I think it's due to the hardware and it's age rather than the software, Snow Leo was running smoothly) and now the computer won't start - I'm faced with a grey screen and a flashing folder with a question mark on it. I tried booting using the various key combinations and as I understood it, my last resort at fixing it myself would be using Disk Utility on the installation DVD.
    This is what happens:
I boot the computer, insert the disk, press down and hold C (also tried Option). I hear the computer trying to read the disk, but after a considerable aount of time holding down the key and a grey screen, the disk ejects and the flashing folder returns.
Could anyone offer an insight or advice?
At this point I'm not even that interested in fixing the machine, but there are some extremely valuable files that I need to recover (the machine gave out just days before I got my extrenal HDD to back them up).
I'm worried about taking the machine down to the Genius Bar - I'm a completely self-supporting student and I imagine the recovery cost would be huge (if anyone could provide any information on the potential cost of the repair and/or recovery that would help).

One thing to try without needing the install disk: reboot holding down cmd-S. It should reboot to a black screen and text prompt. Type the following, with spacing exactly as shown, hit the return key after each line:
    mount -uw /
    fsck -fy
    Then type
    reboot
    and see if that helps.
Do you have any other Macs in the household (or cna use a friend's) that you can try connecting to it with a Firewire cable? If so, reboot the iMac holding down T, you should see a large Firewire symbol moving across the screen. Connecting to another Mac with a FW cable will show you the iMac's hard drive mounted to the other Mac's desktop.
You can also try Diskwarrior, which fixes drive filestructure problems. It's around $100.
Professional data recovery cost would depend on a) whether the hard drive is actually at fault, b) if it's physically damaged or just has a filestructure problem. A physically damaged drive can go into the thousands of dollars for data recovery; a drive with filestructure issues usually costs a lot less to recover files.

  • Loss of photos due to error message - need to recover

After downloading some photos on holiday and refining them in iphoto, I received an error message saying it was shutting down. On restarting I noticed a number of events empty based on work I had just completed within them. As I am travelling have had no chance to back up. Any advice on how I can recover the photos. See some software out there but surely this is not needed. Any help will be appreciated

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Loss of photos- is compensation appropriate?

I'm curious if others think that Apple might owe me some compensation for upgrading to iPhoto 11, and through no fault of my own, lost many, many of my priceless photos.
After using Data Rescue 3, provided by Apple (complementary) I estimate I still will have lost more than 1000 photos and another 1000 photos need to be reimported (from rescue file) and then organized and then reedited.
I'm guessing it will take 5 to 8 hours to reimport and organize photos. This is in addition to the more than six hours I have spent actually on the phone with Apple and another five or six hours doing busy work they recommended to restore the iPhoto library… with little success.
I haven't, as yet, bothered to read the licensing agreement and for all I know I may be entitled LEGALLY to no compensation…
Notwithstanding that, for all the hours and most importantly, for the loss of my precious photos… do you believe Apple owes me some restitution. What would be appropriate?
    TIA
    gofig

Well what would you like? Personally I don't think they owe you anything. I have 198,000 pictures in my libraries and have them backed up on several drives because in my experience there will be a catastrophe at one point or other in your days of usage. I could not get my libraries to upgrade either and so I imported them into Aperture 3.1 which took 8 days but they are there and all albums etc intact. It took me much time and effort to get to where I am but so be it. Software is what it is and when you are dealing with photographs that have meaning to you you should be extra careful with backups. I don't know the statistics of how many IP 11 copies where sold but I suspect most people did not have issues. I was not so fortunate. I did work with Apple Tech for 10 days but could not get it to work. So my option was to us IP09 or move to Aperture. So figure out what you think is appropriate and ask Apple to give you the bone you speak of. I feel that they should at least return your money for the software that does not meet your needs.

  • Loss of photos in iphoto 6

    hello all,
I have read around but can't see anything directly relevant, so apologies if this has been answered before.
I opened iphoto 6, which crashed almost immediately, resulting in the photo library corrupting. Since this has happened (many times) before, I had a copy, so (after copying that) I renamed the file and opened iphoto again. This seemed fine, until I began importing pictures, when the thumbnails showed only empty spaces where some of the new photos should be. It then became stuck, so I had to 'Forced quit', and when I restarted my computer and opened it again, all the photos were gone. Now, even if I replace the library6iphoto with an old version claiming to have 100mB or so of content, when I open iphoto, I get a dialogue box saying I have to update the thumbnails. No matter whether I press the '`later' or the upgrade now caption, the upgrade takes 1 second, as i seem to have no photos in the file.
I have various library6.iphoto copies, but every time I have tried to open them, the files have reduced to 4kb in content and no pictures are there.
    Any ideas?

    LN
Thanks for the quick reply, but as yet no joy.
I have the iphoto library folder, - shows about 12.5 GB. Inside is the library6.iPhoto database file (claiming to have 4mb content) and various copies I made as backup - which claim around 100 mb of content. The photos - modified and original - all seem to be there. Previously, I was told in a shop to fix this problem by removing the corrupt library6 file and renaming a previously made copy. This has usually worked fine. Not, however, this time, as all this does is reduce the renamed copy to 4 mb.
I tried "depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library option to be sure you are pointing at the library that we just verified had your photos" but no photos materialised! I then "launched iPhoto while depressing the option and command (apple) keys - selecting the first three options of the rebuild library dialogue" but still no photos appeared.
I have downloaded the iphotolibrary manager, but it just crashes every time I open it, so haven't been able to do much with that. I have around 5GB of memory available - could this be the problem?
Rather more worryingly, I then tried to create a whole new library from scratch, reloading selected photos from a disk. They seemed to load fine - all the thumbnails flashed through as it imported and so on, but when it came to actually seeing the library, heaps of the pictures were merely blank dotted squares. More of them had disappeared when I restarted my computer - from about 500 there are only some 3 left now. When I check the original photos in this new iphotolibrary folder, they cannot be opened there either. So, I checked the photos were okay on the CD - they are. Yet, when I uploaded them to the computer merely into a desktop folder, several seem to be corrupted or a file format that preview doesn't recognize.
I have a complete back up of my iphoto library folder on an external disk, but am rather worried about trying to reload from that incase I have something more sinister happening with my mac, since when i restarted a moment ago, my dock 'lost' various files...nothing really was gone, so it was easy to put the icons back, but I am wondering if I have a wider problem.
Sorry if this all seems garbled nonsense!

i have an ipad an a iphone im selling my ipad and wanna erase all the content but was wondering if i erase everything will it take that stuff ofmy phone to? i dont want to loss my photos

Be sure your photos and any other important data/media/pictures
are backed up - iCloud, DropBox, some service of your choice.
If your only copy is on the iPhone and the iPhone is lost/stolen/broken,
    you lose your photos, etc.

  • Loss of photos resulting from rebuilding the iPhoto library?

On behalf of myself and Susan Pease: Can following the directions to rebulild the iPhoto library (by holding down the option and shift keys while opening iPhoto) result in a loss of the photos? Is there some precaution we should take to make sure that the photos are not lost?

Hi, aag. I didn't make myself clear, at least not to you. Inside your personal Home folder on your hard drive is a Pictures folder, and inside the Pictures folder is an iPhoto Library folder. You can see this folder structure by visiting your Home folder in the Finder. What I was advising against in my prior post is opening that iPhoto Library folder in the Finder and adding, deleting or moving any of its contents. Don't do that.
When iPhoto is open, what it displays is the contents of that folder. It expects to find them exactly as they were the last time you closed iPhoto, and it counts heavily on finding them structured exactly the way it structured them the last time you ran it. If you have changed anything in there while iPhoto wasn't running, you're going to have trouble: iPhoto won't load the library, it won't display all your pictures, some of your albums may be missing or incomplete, etc.
"Nobody has any business in there except iPhoto itself" means that the only methods you should use to tweak, edit, delete, import, copy, export or organize the photos in your iPhoto Library folder are the methods offered by iPhoto itself when it's running†. When iPhoto isn't running, leave your iPhoto Library closed and stay out of it.
† Note that, at least in iPhoto 4 (I'm not familiar with iPhoto 2), these allowable methods include the designation of a different application for use in iPhoto's Edit mode, allowing you to use Photoshop, GraphicConverter, etc. to tweak your photos without removing them from iPhoto's control. But under no circumstances should you import a photo from your camera into Photoshop or GC and then save it in your iPhoto Library folder without opening iPhoto and importing it properly. And similarly, you should never open one of the photos in your library with another application, make changes to it, and resave it in the same place (or worse, a different place in that folder) without going through iPhoto to do so.
If you can train yourself to think of the iPhoto Library folder as a locked box to which only iPhoto has the key, you'll be doing yourself a big favor.

  • Can't complete or cancel photo download

My download of photos (from Canon Power Shot to iphoto version 8.1.2 424) is stuck halfway. To transfer your photos:
Transfer and erase the Camera Roll:
Connect the iPad to your computer and launch Image Capture, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Select your iPad in the Devices list and click "Import all".
When the import finishes, you can erase the contents of the Camera Roll, if you want. That would be the quickest way, but deleting it on the iPad in the Photos.app would be safer, but more work.
Delete photos and video clips you synced to your computer using iTunes: Connect your device to your computer and, in iTunes, deselect the photos and video clips you want to remove from your device. Click Apply, and click Sync.
    Delete the Photo Stream contents:
How do I delete photos from My Photo Stream?
You can delete photos from your photo stream the same way you delete other photos from your iOS device or Mac. Just select the photos you want to remove, and tap the trash can icon or click Delete. On your PC, select the photos you want to remove from your photo stream, right-click, and then select delete. When you delete a photo from Photo Stream on one device, iCloud will automatically delete it from the Photo Stream album or view on your other devices. Learn more about deleting photos.

  • Data loss -- managed photos mis-badged as missing referenced photos

I always import all photos as managed photos, and never use referenced photos. Yesterday, I noticed that the last 29 photos from a group of 96 photos imported Feb 18 were badged as "The referenced image’s master file has not been found."
Indeed, although I had worked on many of these images in Aperture shortly after importing them, I could now only view a large but low-res thumbnail.
Weirdly, when I right-click on one of these images and select "Manage Referenced Files..." I get a message that "The selection doesn't use any referenced files." I get the same message when I select "Manage Referenced Files..." from the File menu with the entire project selected.
Using the Finder, as well as the find and locate commands in the terminal, I have verified that the missing images are not on my main or backup hard drives (unfortunately, I use a simple rsync script for backup, and I didn't discover this problem until after the deletions had propagated to my backup).
The other 67 photos imported at the same time (same import group) seem fine, and, using the Finder, I can locate all of them in the Aperture library.
To test one user error scenario, I imported some test photos into the Aperture library and then relocated the masters to the desktop. I then quit Aperture, deleted the photos on the desktop, and relaunched Aperture. As expected, the test photos had the same "The referenced image’s master file has not been found" badge, but when I right clicked and selected "Manage Referenced Files..." I got the expected dialog, unlike when I select the same option for the missing 29 photos.
    Any ideas what went wrong?
    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thanks for responding...
It sounds pretty odd. First try to rebuild the
database...as was suggested (Option>CMD on launch of
    Aperture).
I will try this eventually. But I want to get some insight first, in case this could create more problems than it solves. I am also holding off on updating to 10.4.9 for the same reason.
This might help. If not, try to make an
adjustment on one of the images. This will force the
thumbnail to redraw. If the adjustments aren't
available for that particular image, then the image
    is really offline somewhere.
I am unable to make any adjustments on these images.
I assume you went into your Library "Show Package
Contents" to confirm they are missing. If not, try
    that.
Yes, the images are not in the folder with the other images from that import. Further, I used the unix 'find' and 'locate' commands to search my entire hard drive and backup drive, and the images were not found.
    Can you Export the image?
That was how I first stumbled on this problem -- I tried to export and got an error message that "Versions with unavailable master images cannot be exported."
The weird thing is that when I try and get the 'Managed referenced files...' dialog, Aperture claims that "The selection doesn't use any referenced files" -- that tells me this data loss might be the result of a bug and not user error.

  • Bouts of packet loss and complete loss of connection

Ok forum, I give up! I need your help.
I have an E1200 and am time out and packet loss issues. The internet connection is fine for 30 seconds to five minuets and then everything times out for 15-20 seconds. Although it’s only a minor incontinence to web browsing, it makes playing games and watching videos a nightmare. “Lost connection to server error.” and the like…
This is what I have done to remedy the problem.
I upgraded to a new router, the e1200 I am currently using, from my Tenda 10/100 N. The problems where the same that I am experience currently and the reason I bought it in the firs place.
When I directly connect to the cable modem, I have no issues and everything is fine.
I have run a trace route and the second hop, (the router to the modem) is the choke point.
I have cloned the MAC address
I have updated the firmware and hard reset
I have throttled my MTU to automatic, 1500, and 1472. None making any difference.
I have disabled NAT and all that does is kill my internet connection
I have disabled all firewalls router and windows, no change.
I replaced the physical wire from the router to the modem.
I have disconnected all devices except one computer, and no difference.
I ran a DNS trace and I have… non routable local internet address 192.168.1.1
    DNS-cac-lb-01.rr.com and DNS-cac-lb-02.rr.com
I am using windows 7 and my ISP is time Warner so-cal. Help me obiwan, you’re my only hope.

Sorry friend. I have not had the gaul to load the 1.0 firmware. I am 99% sure I have the 2.0 hardware. I did however unplug my modem for an hour and then try and reconnect. The result was a lossless environment for fifteen to twenty minuets (a long time for me.). But, I am right back still having the same problem. A friend gave me a new netgear router, I am going to try that and I am going to go to Timewarner and have them replace my modem just to make sure there is nothing wrong with the surfboard. I will report back with my findings.

  • At a complete loss.....problems downloading Java

I had Java on my laptop for ages and never had any problems until recently where it just wouldn't let me use it, kept getting an error message saying there were components missing...or something like that.
Completely removed it from my laptop (well I thought I had) and tried downloading it again. The automatic download would do nothing, but shows up when I do control-alt-delete in processes. Can't end the process though.
Tried manual download, same problem...when I go to run it by double clicking the icon, nothing happens but again shows in processes.
What am I doing wrong, and does anyone know how I can solve this?
    Many thanks
