Complete newbie looking for direction

C# developer for Windows - have been doing Outlook-based addins for a while. Looking to port something similar to Mac. Need plug-in (or something similar) integration into Ical, mail and the contact address database. Can this be done? Want to a) add UI (like buttons and forms) b) get events and c) create and populate items.
Any directions/pointers would be very welcome....

• Mac Newbie looking for short answers to multiple questions...

My computer experience started with the Commodore 64 in the 1980's and progressed to building my own Core Duo PC with 4 GIG RAM running 64 bit Vista Ultimate and several flavors of Linux. My only Mac experiences happened when I visited my elderly parents, who insisted on only using Mac's, generally ancient Mac's that they bought on eBay.
I was not interested at all in Macs and found the GUI very confusing to use. All that changed when my dad showed me the Mac Mini he bought. Instead of the hulking, slow, underpowered behemoths he usually used, this little machine was amazing. I had to have one, and yesterday bought a Mac Mini with superdrive and 512 MB of RAM, along with Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. This was amazingly easy to set up, just starting with all of the PC stuff I have lying around.
Now, I need some one-line opinions from people who use Mac's, nothing complicated, just opinions. I don't need help configuring this machine, I just want to know what I can do with it. I find most people enjoy giving opinions!
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
Please don't flame me or tell me to read the manual. I am looking for opinions, not instructions. I am also not interested in running Windows software on my Mac - I have had mixed results trying to do this under Linux, and I also have plenty of Windows machines to operate Windows software. Remember, the more people like me who are interested in switching over to Mac's, the better and cheaper the platform should become. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Glad you found your way to the Mac in the present incarnation of MacOS. Earlier flavors of it were perhaps somewhat less elegant, though I have always had a liking for the relative simplicity and the integration of features which tend to make some work more easily accomplished than on the PCs I have also used.
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
Yes, the memory upgrade is very worthwhile. A stock mac mini runs perfectly well, but when taking into account the RAM used by the on board video, and the possibility of using Rosetta if you're using any non-native software, 512Mb is really not enough for smooth operation. Indeed, you'll tend to get pauses which can become annoying, particularly if you want to run multiple applications.
The salesman really should have pointed out that while the procedure to upgrade RAM isn't really all that difficult, the mini is not intended to be opened by the user at all because there are no user serviceable parts inside. However, RAM is readily available from third party suppliers and with a little on-line research, is a fairly simple job to undertake. Two things to watch for: 1) that the memory comes from a supplier who will swap it without question, because Macs are rather more fussy about RAM than PCs tend to be, and 2), when completing the memory upgrade, ensure you reconnect the tiny fan control cable - failing to do so will leave the fan running at full blast all the time. It's an easy omission, and even the experts forget it sometimes!
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
Depends on what kind of editing and image adjustment you generally do. The mini comes with iLife, which includes iPhoto, which has all the usual array of adjustment tools for brightness, contrast, color balance etc, plus a useful one for tilting images to straighten them if taken at an angle, but it doesn't include the filters and effects of a true image editing application. Photoshop Elements on the other hand is feature rich and easy to use, though at a cost. Personally, I don't like iPhoto much and use Photoshop Elements, though there is also a truly excellent shareware application called GraphicConverter, which started life as a tool to convert images from one format to another (hence the name) but is now a very feature-rich image processor in it's own right. Worth a look and can be tried out for free. Have a look at http://www.lemkesoft.com/xd/public/content/index.cGlkPTE5Mw.html
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
No experience of this personally, but I'd check those reviews and any others you can find to see what it is the writers liked or didn't like about using the software, and see if that helps you. There are always unhappy customers though, so reviews in magazines may be more objective.
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
You can use your FAT32 formatted drives with the Mac though you are limited to files of 4Gb maximum.
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
It IS worth doing, yes. I use SuperDuper! which is first rate and free for making complete duplicates of a drive, or $29 for the paid/registered version to allow incremental backups. Works like a charm. If you use a drive partitioned in the GUID scheme (as the mini's internal is) you can even then set that drive, and the cloned copy of your system to boot the mini.
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
Personally I'd say yes. ClamXav is open source (thus free) and reliable, has a marginal hit on CPU load and helps ensure you don't inadvertently pass on infections (it can also spot types of malware such as phishing scames). As yet, however, there are no known viruses/worms/trojans that affect MacOS, so it isn't critical at this time. However at some point it is likely there will be - in my view it's better to be prepared than to be left to react at the time.
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
Yes. Like all open source projects, there are some good and some bad, but by and large the open source community for MacOS based systems is active and effective. Both Open Office and Gimp work well for example.
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
X-Plane springs to mind.
There really are very few people you'll find in Apple Discussions who would flame you for asking such questions. Indeed, answering such things is one of the prime reasons we're here, and while there's always value in reading the manuals, it must also be said that in many ways getting useful information out of them means you have to know enough already to be able to work out what information you need from all the stuff available. Questions are easier to ask and pertinent information easier to give as a result!

• Newb looking for advice...

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've never worked with wireless before.
Currently I'm on my Powermac G5, running ethernet into a linksys. Also have a dell laptop hooked up (with wires) through the linksys.
I just picked up an older ibook G3 yesterday, and I'd like to be able to connect wirelessly with it.
Could someone just give me a breif rundown of what exaclty I'd need (again, I'm a newb, so sorry).
The G5 does not have airport, and right now, neither does the ibook. I'm not looking for speed, just would like to be able to connnect the ibook wirelessly.

The G5 does not have airport, and right now, neither does the ibook. I'm not looking for speed, just would like to be able to connnect the ibook wirelessly.
As a minimum, you'll need an original AirPort card for the iBook G3, and the April 2005 and earlier Power Mac G5s are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. The later Power Mac G5s are not. Instead, these models require a special combo AirPort/Bluetooth card which must be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).

• I am looking for direction on beginning a project.

Hello all, this is is a brief and likely frustratingly generic message.
It has been well over a decade since I have worked with Adobe products (I last built a web page with PS 5 and Macromedia Dreamweaver).
All of the new tools available to us are astounding but, for someone partially familiar with the tools but unfamiliar with the new workflows, the Creative Cloud can be daunting: there is simply so much.
I have two projects I would like to work on, the first is a blog that will incorporate videos of recorded shows, and host essays and writing on creative criticism, the second is a web page for a tutoring and academic writing service.
What I am looking for isn't a hand to hold while I do all of this, but a bit more specific a vector for where to begin my learning. I am used to the old method of designing, slicing, and fighting with pixels and tables, and having to manually set styles on static portions of web pages; CSS is a new ball game for me, as it was only in its infancy when I was doing this years ago.
Should I be using Dreamweaver, or Edge Reflow these days, if I am more of a designer/writer than an artist? What about Muse; though I find that Muse doesn't render graphics very well and content becomes blurry (like blurred 1px lines rather than crisp images like in PS)? I'd like to be able to repackage my blog in a mobile app one day, likewise for the tutoring service, but that one much farther down the road.
So, I guess, I've put on my blindfold, and am ready to pin the tail on the donkey, but I need someone to give me a spin first. I know there isn't much detail in this post, but I don't want to start rambling about things that don't really matter yet; but I do have the projects outlined and ready for green lights, so I can fill in more details as required.
Best,
Jared.

I only use Appleworks 6 to create documents. The printer is Photosmart 3200 all-in-one

• Ubber Newbie Looking for Basic Samples

Hello- I've spent the last 3 hours or so trying to create a very basic calculator in Flex (aka: add a couple input cells). Spent time looking through videos, reading documentation, etc. Much of it assumes programming background or web development experience of which I have little.
So, wanted to find some very basic application samples I could take apart and learn from. I found some, but they are pretty advanced and most depend on communication to/from the internet (tons of facebook and photo apps).
I'm just looking for a simple calculator/mortgage calculator application I can take apart and learn from.
Anyone know where I can find examples for super basic users?
Thanks!
- Mr. Bill

Here is an extremely basic example of one way it can be done. You of course would need more operators, conditional code to handle those operators, and several other functions and formulas - especially for mortgages - but hopefully this will get you started on the basic method.

<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" height="208" width="444">
<mx:Script>

private function BasicCalc():void
var CalculatedValue:Number=Number(TextInput1.text) + Number(TextInput2.text);
ResultText.text=String(CalculatedValue);

</mx:Script>
<mx:TextInput id="TextInput1" x="24" y="41" width="50" textAlign="right" text="1"/>
<mx:TextInput id="TextInput2" x="24" y="71" width="50" textAlign="right" text="2"/>
<mx:Text id="ResultText" x="44" y="101" text="0" width="30" textAlign="right"/>
<mx:Button id="CalcButton" x="82" y="41" label="Calc" width="57" height="52" click="BasicCalc()"/>

• Total Newbie Here. Looking For Directions

Hi everyone,
I'm completely new to everything except photoshop which I'm still learning. I want to create a printable fitness journal, but I'm unsure which program I would use. I just wanto use my company logo, add lines for journal entries and a few pages that would have a food and exercise tracker...sort of like a calendar. Can someone please direct me to the right program? I was thinking it would be Indesign, but a few Google searches suggested Illustrator.
Thanks in advance.

If it's one page only, either one of Photoshop or Illustrator or InDesign would do just fine. For anything more than a single page and containing a mix of images and text, one typically would use InDesign.

That suggestions were probably made by Illustrator users.

• Looking for direct download links for Creative Suite trial versions?

Trial versions of Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop Elements, and Adobe Premiere Elements are downloaded using the Adobe Download Assistant — a small application that is meant to improve download reliability and avoid issues that commonly occur during large downloads, such as frequent disconnects.
What do we mean by "large downloads"? Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop Elements, for example, are each over 1.1 GB. The approximate download times for files this size are:
• On a cable connection (3 mbps): 50 minutes.
• On a DSL connection (1.5 mbps): 1 hrs. 39 minutes.
The Adobe Download Assistant helps most people manage the download of these large files, for example by enabling pause/resume of the downloads, and checking to ensure the complete file(s) are downloaded before actual installation begins.
While we strongly recommend you first attempt to download trial versions using the Adobe Download Assistant, we also realize that some people just prefer to manage their own downloads directly, using a web browser. For those of you who do, please follow the instructions carefully here.
Update 5/5/13: Please utilize the Photoshop Elements page at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_elements&loc=us to set the trial cookie to allow the links offered at http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html to function successfully.
Update 5/17/13: The Prodesigntools site - http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html has been updated. Please follow the Very Important Instructions section to complete the download process.

I was trying everything I could think of on my end to download the InDesign trial from this link:
http://prodesigntools.com/trials2/AdobeProducts/IDSN/8/win32/InDesign_8_LS16.exe
I must have tried it a hundred times using every browser, download manager, login, logout, whatever. At one point the server sent me a 1.2 MB file that was corrupt, but on all other attempts it just errored out. The current response entity is:
Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/IDSN/8/win32/InDesign_8_LS16.exe?" on this server.
Reference #18.6daeacd.1343153129.1c78627
When I switched to the 7zip file and after many more attempts it finally downloaded. The exe link never worked.
I don't know if this is a security thing or a failed server but it is not a good way to distribute software either way.

products and their physical attributesThere are a couple of ways you can approach this. If you are coding to JavaFX 8, you could possibly use the new TreeTableView control. I haven't used that, and the documentation is not (yet) complete for it.
The other approach is to define two tables, one for products, and one for physical attributes. Update the itemsProperty of the physical attributes table when the selectedItemProperty of the products table's selectionModel changes. A similar question was posted in {thread:id=2516138}

• Newbie looking for advice on spry tabbed panels for record view/add/edit

I have just got CS 5.5. Although old hand at IT this is fist use of DW. Have been through "The Missing Manual" and I am now trying somethings out.
I have an SQL DB and some "management" tables. I thought that in the admin section I could use the Spry tabbed panel to create a List, Add, Edit and Delete panel.
linking on a row in List will set the value of a variable (unique column) which is used by the Edit and Delete tabs. Add is just the wizard.
I am only trying things out. Is this is a sensible approach or should I look to have a page for each of the 3 functions which are linked from the list of rows. As given in the example in the book?
Regards

Thank you for this. I see that spry is now dead but I have the bit between my teeth for working this out. Partly because it helps me understand the way things are put together. So although Spry is not important. Understanding the system that I will then adapt into other circumstances and other variants is. So please bear with me.
So if anyone out there has some SPRY experience you may be able to tell me what knowledge I am missing here.
So at the moment I have a tabbed panel within a tabbed panel.
Header tabbed panel is called "TPMain"
Sub TB is called "TPAges"
TPAges has 4 tabs "List", "Add", "Edit" and "Delete"
"List" being the default tab.
Link style 1
Playing with forms and links, I have worked out that I can create a repeat region in the list and add a column with 1 hidden value (the id) and a submit button to set the value of the id, but the code to end up showing the Edit panel is not functioning. This is the form code in the table of the List Tab

<input type="hidden" name="EditID" value= <?php echo $row_rsAges['oid']; ?>/>

In the edit tab I have the code

<?php echo "*".$_POST['EditID']."*"; ?>

The page reloads but on TPMain and on the first tab (people) and not the second tab (Ages)
The value is correctly shown but with teh slash (/) character at the end?
Link style 2
I thought I would try and access it via an href. From googling I came up with this on one of the columns. I know it doesn't set the variable but I wanted to know if I could make it show the panel.
<?php echo $row_rsAges['description']; ?></a
No errors just does nothing.
I'm off to hunt for jQuery tab as osgood suggests but would like to crack this out of sheer bloody mindedness.
Regards

• Total newbie looking for some advice

I am looking into FCP or Final Cut Express. Cost aside, I'm trying to figure out what would be the better option. I have a 20" iMac now and a canon HG21 camcorder. I want to be able to edit my footage in a way that's a whole lot better than iMovie can do. I hate iMovie 09. The question is whether FCP or FCE is the best option. I don't want to go with a lesser product and then think, "Oh man, that would have been so much better." but on the other hand, I'm not making Citizen Cane here so I don't want or need to over shoot the mark but getting a product that is too much when I won't ever use 70% of it. I know most would say FCE is the way to go but I don't want to be short sighted if FCP gives me benefits that warrant the larger program. Can a low end user (someone not making feature films or something) use FCP and get enough out of it to warrant the program? Think of it as a user who maybe only uses e-mail and iPhoto buying a $3,500 mac. That would be a waste. At what point would I be in one camp (FCE) or the other(FCP)?
I also like the fact that FCP just got upgraded while FCE has not and no idea when that will happen. Does FCP work well with Snow Leopard? I haven't upgraded yet but if FCP works better with the new OS than FCE does that would be a big factor in deciding.
Also, this export of this footage would be a standard DVD so if that matters between the two I wanted that bit of info out there. So basically in a nutshell, what product would you go with and why? I'm leaning towards the new FCP but I want to make sure I choose right considering my needs and hardware (can FCP run ok on a 20" iMac or do I need a pro system?) to be happy with the end product.
Thanks for the help.

You can ignore this. I found out my answers. Looks like FCE is the program for me. If someone has something to add (maybe I'm wrong?) by all means let me know but it looks like FCE is the right choice.

• Looking For Direct Patch Update for FC6

Hi Gang
I'll have to reformat my system drive again, and rather than download the Update for FC6 from the 'Software Update' method, I'd like to downlaod the patch directly. I inadvertently downlaoded the new Safari, with all the JAVA updates (very problematic). I should have left it alone. No recourse but to reformat.
Could someone please point to the link for FC6 update from Apple? I'm trying to understand the process of avoiding these so-called 'Input Managers' which could add strange 3rd party add on's, (very problematic).
Thank you
Mike

I would recommend using the Software Update app method. That will scan your system and only display the necessary updates. Then after installing one wave of updates, run Software Update again until you've got everything installed.
For the record, it appears that Apple does have all of the ProApp updates available on their download servers for Final Cut Studio 2.
The reason for my keeping a personal archive was that our editing systems here cannot be updated every time an update is released. This is due to the many different third party systems/servers that need to be qualified/updated before applying a ProApp update. And since that cycle can take a while, it was important for us to be able to keep all of our editing systems on the same versions. For some reason, Apple would only allow the most current update to be downloaded separately, since older versions were no longer supported. That doesn't work well for an enterprise environment.

• Newbie looking for a few answers on upgrading

I have been a switcher for about 5 months. I have a mental block sometimes from Windows... I tend to make it harder than it really is....

My FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
2. will I loose my iweb internet site?
Not if you archive and install and save user settings and your system is healthy. There is no guarantee your system is healthy, which is why you made a bootable backup.
3. do I need to de-authorize my itunes account before install?
No.
4. How/can I bring my mail messages into the new mail......
They will not move as long as you save user and network preferences.

• Newbie looking for E-MU Manual

Have 200+ DAT tapes that I would like to archive to computer (internal or external) storage but recognize this would need to be via USB. Have capability to burn CD-Rs which could then be ripped to storage but this would be a huge task with wasted steps. Have two DAT machines, one with Toslink and the other with XLR/RCA digital ouputs.
It was suggested that E-MU 0404 could accept the available digital inputs and provide USB output to PC.
Trying to understand the details of the process since I am new to this. So, have a few questions...
1) Will the 0404 be a suitable interface?
2) Given its price, are there less expensive options that will do what I want since this may be a one-time transcription?
3) Saw a (much) earlier request for a 0404 Manual which was never answered and did not see one offered on the Support/Downloads location on the Creative website.
Thanks in advance for assistance.

Really? I've repeatedly used forms and email to contact E-Mu support since Jan 2015, and have received not even an acknowledgement from Support, except for an email the first time, when I'd used the European form. It said the same thing as the stickie thread you cite. No follow-up came in two days or two months.

• KASKhmerScript - looking for direction

Hello everyone,
I've been unsuccessful in finding the proper header and code file that would produce the Khmer language in Acrobat. Has anyone solved adding the kASKhmerScript and if you have what header and code file(s) did you use?
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the reply Irosenth. Yes, I need to produce Khmer text. We output the text currently but we still see vowel indicators in the PDF output text (Acrobat 11). When I embed the KhmerOS font Adobe replaces the font and reordering characters,shaping (substituting) glyphs, and positioning glyphs properly won't work. I've found DOCX to be successful with its shaping engine but in a realistic world I'll need to produce a postscript or PDF file so no modifications can be made to the final output. DOCX has many limitations and only one positive that is cleaning up the Khmer output properly with the shaping engine Microsoft built.
