Complete novice needs advice

Hi, Im a guitarist (bit of an old rocker at heart) and would love to get started with GB ie; recording my guitar and voice etc. I have a Imac Power PC (2005) with GB2. Could anyone recommend a decent book to buy in order to get started. I am in my 50's and to be honest find the programme fascinating but extremely daunting! Is it worth buying ilife08 in order to upgrade?
Thanks.

Hi ddossot
Saw your note about using a proper IDE unfortunately I am obliged to use the one provided by my UNI. Reason being the markers of my project may not be up to date with other IDE's. Though I may be allowed to use a newer version of JBuilder. I am waiting to hear if I have permission to do so.
Here's another thick question. from what I remember, when studying Java last year, it has a number of libraries that can be imported to a project. When I download the HTML and XML stuff are they just added to the libraries already in place and if so how is it done.
ps hope they also have tutorials with them for the coding :o(
One last question; am I in the right forum for this sort of query or is there a novice one for thicko's like me? :o)

    Hi folks
    I hope you can indulge me. I am a mature student studying with the Open University in the UK. In order to complete my degree I have to produce a (small) project (doesn't have to have full functionality) based on a Network application. I am limited to using Java and to some extent the software provided for me, which in this case is JBuilder3.5 (yes I know it's old!). I can, within reason download further software providing my tutor is ok with it but here's the rub I have no idea what I actually need. There is so much to read through and I am feeling a bit thick because I cannot pin anything down.
    This is where I would appreciate any help from you experts. My project subject is a browser which can interpret web pages and then configure them to be displayed in a fromat that is prefered by the user not the author. I can build the GUI but I am stuck when it comes to building the functionality behind it. ie what packages do I need to download that can recognise XML/HTML tags in order to rearrange the display? Am I even on the right track? Is it actaully possible?
    Because the project is only worked over a small period I don't need full functionality but have elected to deal with input/output fields, text placemnt/display/font (infromationl), graphic placement/deletion. I may also be alowed to update my version of Jbuilder.
    I would be so grateful if somebody could at least point me in the right direction. I need to add here that I feel so stupid that I need replies in very plain english :o)

  • External HD novice needs advice

    Hey folks,
    I have a PowerPC iBook G4 from around 2005 or so. I am planning to buy a new MacBook, but want to keep my iBook as a backup. It has all my iTunes and iPhoto items on it, as well as a number of other files I don't want to lose to a HD crash.
    My question: i want to get an external HD to preserve my files, pics, etc. instead of losing them all to a HD crash. I don't know the first thing about external HD's. I'm not even sure what one would look like. I have seen discussions about some external HD's themselves being unreliable and they aren't all Mac-compatible and it has me nervous.
    Could some kind soul make a recommendation about a good reliable external HD to back up my iBook? I've seen something about cloning, but I don't know what that is or if I want to do it. I do not seem to have the install disks for the OS. If they came with my iBook, I don't know where they went. Can anyone point me to a previous discussion about how to back up or clone my hard drive or whatever I need to do?
    I am completely clueless, so any helpful advice would be enormously appreciated.

    You're welcome!
    Let me add a little bit more for you to think about, and do feel free to post back with any further questions once you've done some research.
    Many drives come formatted for PC's running Windows rather than for Macs. You can reformat the drives for Macs using Disk Utility.
    You can use a single external drive for more than one computer, but you will need to partition it so that there is a separate partition for each computer. If you also want to use Time Machine to back up your new MacBook, then there should be a separate partition for that.
    There is another factor to consider if you want to make a bootable clone for both the iBook and the MacBook. The iBook uses a partition scheme called the Apple Partition Map, and the MacBook will use the GUID Partition Table. The external drive has to be formatted with one partition scheme or the other. So if you want your clones to be bootable, then you will want to get two external firewire drives and format one for the iBook (Apple Partition Map) and the other for the MacBook (GUID Partition Table).
    In terms of size, the bootable clone can be the same size as the internal drive. So if your iBook has a 120 GB drive, you could use a 120 GB external drive to back it up with a bootable clone. If you decided to buy a 250 GB drive, you could partition it and use half for the bootable clone and the other half for something like large media files or other storage.
    Good places to comparison shop for drives are Newegg and OWC, as both frequently have specials, as do Office Supply places. I personally like Western Digital and Seagate drives. For backup I have 3. They are all WD notebook drives in OWC's firewire Mercury on the Go enclosures, all of which have the very reliable Oxford chip sets. One drive is for the iBook, one is for the MBP, and the third is a redundant clone and archive.
    Since your immediate need is for the iBook, a good strategy would be to get a drive suitable for the iBook clone and get your data backed up ASAP. When you actually get the MacBook, you can think about a drive for it.
    Good luck!

  • Complete novice needs answer to AWE64 qu

    hello
    i've just bought an old 90's programme of KOAN generati've music on a floppy. the programme plays the soundcard like a synthesiser but it was designed to be played with specific soundcards, namely Creative Labs AWE64 / AWE32 / SB32, or else it will sound completely wrong.
    because these soundcards are obsolete, can anyone tell me what soundcard i should get (for a laptop pc) that will reproduce the sound exactly the same as the above soundcards?
    sorry if this sounds like i haven't got a clue but the truth is, er, i haven't!

  • Complete Novice Needs Some Basic Help

    Hi!
    I'm sorry to clutter up the discussion with such basic questions, but what I want to do is get something from a cassette tape to my iPod. I'm told I can do this through GarageBand, and I have an audio cable that the guy in the Apple store said I would need. I'm not even sure where to plug this cable in. So any help in where I plug this in, or what I do next would be tremendously appreciated. If someone could even tell me where to look for help that would be great (when I look in GarageBand help its saying something about MIDIs and I don't even know what that is). Eternal gratitude for any help....

    Oh man, this is frustrating and I might give up soon!
    So in System Preferences, Sound I have 2 things,
    Internal Microphone (port is Built-in) and Line In
    (port is Audio line-in port). I can't seem to
    select one or the other, they're just there.
    Yeah, there is no "apply" or "OK" or anything like that. Just click on the Line-In so that it is highlighted and close the system preferences. That takes care of that. My PB G4 automatically detects when I plug in my line-in now that it is set up.
    Then in GB preferences, I only have the option of
    Built-in Audio, there is no other option.
    Built-In audio is correct in GB prefs.
    I also couldn't find where you were saying to
    double-click...what's the track header? I've clicked
    everything and can't find a monitor drop down menu
    option.
    The track header is the left-hand side of the track where there is a small speaker or instrument. For what you are doing, you need to create a new basic track. (Under "Track" in the menu bar, click "New Basic Track") You should have a new blue track that is labeled "No Effects." Double click on the speaker image and a dialog box will appear. Right in the middle of this box there are options for Input, Volume, and Monitor. You can turn on and off monitor abilities here.
    On the plus side, the connector I have seems to
    work...its male/male 1/8".
    Perfect.
    Thanks again and if you want to bail out, I
    completely understand!
    Hang in there. We were once all newbies to this digital recording stuff too.

  • Complete novice needs help getting SQL Query into Crystal Reports XI

    Post Author: MissMarnie
    CA Forum: Data Connectivity and SQL
    So I was given an intro level web course and a monster reference guide in prep to format a report. One of our developers wrote me everything I need for the report into a SQL Query and now I'm supposed to format it in CR XII literally do not know what to do from here. I'm able to set up the correct server as a datasource, if that's useful, but I don't know how to make the querey into a bunch of formattable fields in  CR. If anyone can walk me through this, I'd be so grateful. I've attempted to look up SQL query in both the help and the book but I keep hitting a wall. The help dialog says things like "press this button" with no reference to what "this button" is. I'm sure it's obvious to the knowledgeable but I'm in a complete fog. Thanks in advance

    IF you're trying to get assistance with setting up a query as the source for a report, try posting your Crystal version and the database type.
    Different software works differently.
    In CR 9 and above, under the connection to the database you'll see Add Command. Select that and you can paste the query in.
    As for not knowing how to generate a report, that requires experience, there's no generic solution of course..

  • IPod novice needs advice

    Okay, I'm a novice at this...I simply wanted a shuffle for running at the gym....hubby bought me a 20gb iPod because he thought it was better. In any case, I have only been using it since the end of December (it was purchased in October 2005) and it freezes, skips songs and the display does some funky split screen thing. I have been looking at the different postings and am saddened to see that these are very common issues (especially since I just purchased a nano for my daughter). I thought I just had a lemon. So my best plan of action is to reinstall the software/updates and cross my fingers? Thanks for any advice!

    If you do a lot of running with your iPod you could be doing damage to the drive. It's a hard drive based mp3 player. It's possible when the iPod is loading a song into it's memory (drive is being accessed) to damage it. If you problem comes back, send it back to see if Apple can find anything else wrong with it and it might be a good idea to consider a Shuffle for use when you are jogging since it's a flash based mp3 player.

  • Complete Novice-Need to know how to replicate these effects

    Hey,
    I am currently making some instructional videos for work where we help disabled students with computer software. I write all the scripts, get the audio done and create the videos but used to get another guy to produce them and add the finishing touches. He no longer works for us and I desperatly need to get more done but can't figure out how.
    It is the transitions and effects on the video etc. that I can't figure out. I have attached a sample of what I am talking about. It is the transition from the logo to the video that I need to know as well as how to get the logo in the bottom of the screen and the title of the video coming up then fading out. More than happy to pay for this knowledge as I have loads of these to do.
    Please have a look at the sample and let me know if you can help me. Much appreciated.

    It looks like a 'zoom blur' transition,
    but from the looks of it, my guess is that it was done inside a motion graphics program... probably After Effects.
    There is no default transition like this premier pro but there are 3rd party plugins that may offer this transition (as well as many others...)
    http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/extend.displayTab4.html#ABSoft
    The last transition listed on FxFactory Pro is a 'Zoom dissolve' which looks exactly what your after ...but unfortunately they are only compatible with after effects at the moment

  • Complete novice needs ftp help

    HI All,
    I'm a first time user of iWEB but reasonably confident with using macs for other things - particularly use imovie/photo/tunes.
    I tried searching the forum (I use it a lot and usually find answers) but couldnt find anything that goes right back to basics...
    Anyway, I have made a site using iWEB for my business and have a domain name and hosting space . I have downloaded Captain ftp but cant seem to get it to upload my site. I have host name, user name and password. I just opened Captain ftp and clicked on remote, quick connect. My domain name appears in one of the windows in red and the stripey blue and white bar at the bottom just kept moving and it said 'getting folders' but it never did (30 min later). the other window says my mac and shows hard drive icon under name
    Can anyone offer an idiots stepwise guide for me? I'm feeling a bit frustrated at the whole thing. I tried to get through to the host tech support but they didnt have anyone who could help me with mac/iweb problems.
    Thanks in anticipation

  • Need advice on Career in SAP after completing 9 yrs in IT mainly in Telecommunication Domain with BMC Remedy Tool knowledge

    Need advice on Career in SAP after completing 9 yrs in IT mainly in Telecommunication Domain with BMC Remedy Tool knowledge.
    Which Module of SAP I can learn and get into as I have Tool based knowledge in BMC Remedy and fair knowledge in SQL, as I come from non-IT background. What are career prospect after completing  any SAP module now will my previous experience will be taken into account?

    Prashant,
    One of the reasons nobody has replied to you yet is that, this is a question with so little information provided.
    - There is no mention of your education background.
    - Your work background is very vague.What exactly did you do in Telecommunication Domain?
    - What exactly did you do in BMC Remedy? Where you just an end-user or did you do any background support work?
    - What exactly did you do in SQL? Did you work on it or did you just attend training?
    - Why do you want to jump into SAP? And what precisely you want to jump into in SAP?
    - What are your interests? Technical or Non-technical?
    - What's your career objective? Where do you want to be 5 years from now?
    Without providing these information how can anyone help you? Picking a module and going with it makes no sense. What if you spend an insane amount of time and money learning a module in SAP (based on some random suggestions given here) and realize that this is not what you were looking for, or there is little scope for that module in the market? What then?
    It's your career that you are planning. It definitely deserves more thought-process and planning to go into.

  • A complete novice- still need help please!

    I am a complete novice, any help would be appreciated. I have written this short programme to display two buttons in a window on screen and with a little help from Lee i have incorporated the ColorButton subclass (see below for code).
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class ButtonExample extends WindowAdapter{
    private Frame mainFrame;
    private Panel topPanel;
    private ColorButton buttonOne;
    private ColorButton buttonTwo;
    // constructor
    public ButtonExample(){
    mainFrame = new Frame("Button Test Example" );
    topPanel = new Panel();
    buttonOne = new ColorButton("I'm button one");
    buttonTwo = new ColorButton("I'm button two");
    mainFrame.setSize( 300, 75 );
    mainFrame.addWindowListener(this);
    topPanel.setLayout( new FlowLayout() );
    topPanel.add(buttonOne);
    topPanel.add( buttonTwo);
    mainFrame.add( topPanel );
    mainFrame.setVisible(true);
    // close the frame when clicks the close button
    public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {
    System.exit(0);
    // Main program started
    public static void main( String args[] ){
    new ButtonExample();
    I am trying to familiarise myself with subclasses and want to create a subclass of java.awt.Button to override the background and foreground colours and have come up with this
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class ColorButton extends Button{
    public ColorButton(){
    super();
    setBackground (Color.red);
    setForeground (Color.yellow);
    On modifying the main programme to incorporate ColorButton it will not change the background color, only the Button color and will not display text in the buttons themselves, any suggestions would be appreciated

    If you use the constructor:
    buttonOne = new ColorButton("I'm button one");you have to write it:
    class ColorButton extends Button {
       public ColorButton(String text) {
          super(text);
    }

  • Newb, needs advice about landing page

    Hey guys, I am very new to Dreamweaver. I was asked by my
    boss to create a landing page. She asked me because I am the
    graphic designer for all print material. She is well aware (as am
    I...lol) I am no web developer....But I would LOVE to learn and I
    have plenty of time to figure it out.
    only requirements are: Dimensions are 950px by 475px. must
    use divs, and be centered. I don't need to do anything fancy script
    wise, basically this is a welcome page with a summary and 2 links
    and whatever aesthetic design i come up with.....(in short, it kind
    of looks like a postcard) I am familiar with CSS & html coding,
    but I'd say as far as layout structure and professional web
    standards, I'm a complete novice.
    I will be creating the layout in photoshop.
    Would you recommend that I slice up the photoshop image? and
    play with the CSS that photoshop generates?
    Or would you recommend that I FIRST set up the "container"
    div and the rest of the layout in Dreamweaver, then slice photoshop
    and place each image individually..
    Again, I am very new to web stuff....But I would love to
    learn the web standards, best practices, what structure is best to
    use, etc...
    Any advice would be greatly appreciate...thanks a lot, Take
    care...

    > just out of curiousity, why never use the code that
    Photoshop
    > generates?
    Because Photoshop (and any other graphics app that writes
    HTML) are *TOO
    GOOD* at what you have asked them to do, and that is to
    create HTML to
    exactly produce the graphic layout you have designed. To do
    this they have
    to drastically merge and split cells, filling the table with
    col- and
    rowspans, and producting a completely inflexible and
    monolithic structure
    that breaks apart as soon as the shape of the contents
    changes (for example,
    when I change the browser's text size display). Crash/bang.
    Furthermore,
    the resulting mess is simply impossible to troubleshoot.
    Now - for HTML emails, you will usually need to use tables
    for your layout
    since email clients cannot be relied on to properly display
    more
    contemporary layout methods. But for web pages, you'd want to
    move beyond
    this very poor layout structure created by the graphics apps.
    > people love that PS generates code for them
    Only those who don't understand could go in this category.
    That markup is
    good for prototyping, but lousy for production. But look at
    the web - 80%
    of what you see there is prototype-level stuff.
