Completely dead iPod Nano

My iPod Nano is dead. I was trying to get it to work with iPod Updater and iTunes (both weren't seeing it) So I reset it (at a full charge) After I reset it, the screen changed to black and white, then I reconnected it to my USB and Windows recognized it, but iTunes and iPod updater didn't, so I unconnected it. Then I turned it off, and now it won't turn back on. I've got it connected to my wall charger right now and it still won't respond (hold switch IS off). My 40GB iPod Photo works with the same USB slot and was recognized by Windows (XP), iTunes AND iPod updater, so i'm about 99% sure it's not my computer.

hmm. do what you did to get windows to recognize it, then wait at least a minute before you disconnect it. it may need some time to read the ipod in itunes. what does it say when you try to use the ipod updater?

  • Completely dead iPod Video

My daughter has an iPod video, it's approximately a month old and it's dead. She's tried all the self fix suggestions found here and it still doesn't work. It does work when connected to her computer, as soon as she disconnects from the computer it's dead. Of course Circuit City won't do anything for us because it's over 14 days since date purchased. Any suggestions? This iPod was to replace the mini she ran into the ground. All this money spent and she can't enjoy it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

First of all you should be able to return the units to CCity if you’re having a problem with it.
I return 2 IPOD shuffle twice and on the last exchange I even upgraded to the NANO, with no additional charge because prices fell. The store return policy should be 30 days of purchase; the 15-days usually applies to computer software etc.
You should contact the store manager for a replacement before the 30-day period takes effect; make sure you have your original receipt.
In addition you can try doing a manual reboot by pressing Menu and Center button; at least 6 seconds simultaneously and see what happens.
Also make sure your HOLD button on top of IPOD is not ON.
    Try for starters.

  • Completely dead iPod... I think?

I'll just start from the beginning.
Saturday morning, while visiting with my father, he handed me his iPod and asked me to fix it for him... his words were "It's no good, it won't even power up, see what you can do." So, I brought it home, and plugged it up to my computer (running windows xp pro).
The iPod is a 3rd gen - the one with the 4 buttons in a line under the LCD. I got the monochrome battery charge screen, and figured i'd let it charge. 12 hours later, after I had left and came back home, the screen was blank, with no charge symbol.
I tapped the play button, got the apple logo, then instead of the monochrome, I got the battery with the exclamation point. That is all the iPod would do... apple logo, exclamation point battery, then die. I decided to let it sit for around 10 hours, then plugged it into the wall and let it charge for around 4-5 hours.
When I checked it again... nada. No apple logo, no battery symbol, nothing.
That was last night. I've been up all night now. I've completely disassembled the iPod, cleaned out the inside, and tested most of it's components with another iPod I have laying around - they all work.
After reassembling it, I now hear a faint whistling noise, but only when I put the iPod right up to my ear. That is the only thing i'm getting out of this iPod now.
Does anybody have any suggestions (other than the obvious throw it away or take a 12lb sledge hammer to it)?

I had this trouble with mine recently. I was able to take it into the Apple store and they hooked it too a firewire plug. It recharged the battery enough to get it to charge. Only thing is now (about 6 months later) the only way to charge it is a firewire and now it won't register that its hooked up on the regular usb so I'm stuck with the same 150 songs.

  • Successfully recovered from a dead iPod nano

This is just to encourage others with similar problems not to give up prematurely.
I was downloading my daily podcast update when it suddenly stopped and reported that it couldn't write to the iPod anymore. I tried everything to recover from this ... Disk Utility ... wouldn't allow me to fix it ... iPod Updater ... could not write to it. I was about to give up and send in to Apple for service but the excessive mailing charges (for service after 6 months) caused me to pause.
I decided to do the last thing on the list of things to do and drain the battery completely. This took over 5 days with me intermittently wakening the iPod by clicking on the wheel. It would display the "Use iTunes to Restore" message for about 20 seconds and then go back to sleep. I figured I had to wake it up frequently to speed up draining the battery.
Earlier today when I clicked the wheel it did not wake up. Eureka ... so I started the iPod Updater and attached the iPod. This time I was able to restore it and then connect to iTunes and download all my music. Right now it is charging.
I hope that nothing more happens but for the time being I am very happy.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If the computer does not see the iPod there is no way to get info off the iPod except a Data Recovery Company might be able to do it.

  • Completely dead ipod

This one, doesnt respond to resetting or restarting, does not show on my computer or any other, does not respond to charging, trough usb or ordinary power source. what is left to do other than gettin help from nearset retail office?

If the cost of the battery is more than half the cost of replacing the iPod, replace the iPod.
Otherwise, the battery is the way to go, but I would only do this through an authorized Apple Service Center at your local Apple store, just so they can diagnose the problem and make sure that it is only the battery that needs replacement.

  • IPod Nano completely out - battery dead?

My iPod Nano (4th generation) suddenly stopped working as I was listening to music, and I could not turn it on again. Is it possible that the battery went dead? Can the battery be replaced?

  • IPod nano 4G completely dead? Already?

    Hi,
yesterday I did some running with my new iPod Nano 4G -which a bought a couple of months ago- and the Nike+ sensor. Suddenly, the iPod fell accidentaly on the road and didn't do anything anymore since then! I'm a bit surprised, as this is the first time this iPod fell (I dropped my old iPod 3G countless times in the past and it never stopped working). Isn't there any procedure I can follow to get it working again? My PC doesn't detect the iPod neither anymore..
    Thanks in advance..

Okay, finally managed to get it working. Kinda.
Basically, what happens is that I'm able to do play one song. As soon as the iPod goes idle (i.e. locks, holding the 'play' button to try and go into standby, etc.) it freezes up and nothing else is possible.
If I want to do anything again, I have to reset it with the menu and centre buttons. But then it becomes a case of rinse and repeat the above.

  • IPod Nano (2nd Generation) Screen Is Completely Blank

    Hi,
When I tried turning on my iPod Nano, it didn't work. The screen was still black and it wouldn't turn on. So I tried toggling the hold button and pressing the center and menu buttons simulatneously but that wouldn't work either. A few nights ago I had accidentally dropped my iPod into the sink and everything but the forward button was working fine. I'm wondering if that has something to do with my iPod not working. It was working perfectly fine up until now..
    Please help.
    Thanks

Hi, it seems as if you are having the same problem with yours that I am having with mine. My screen is completely blank and my ipod doesnt turn on or anything not even when I hook it to the computer. I have reinstalled everything ad still nothing. I have toggled with it and still nothing and I am getting very annoyed lol. It doesnt even come up on itunes either. I havent dropped in water or anything. Last I knew the battery went dead and something about a corrupted file, while i tried charging it came up. It has worked fine and just today it stopped wowrking and I dont know what to do and hoping someone can help me out.

My touch screen on my ipod Nano, Gen 6 has gone completely white. It had started going white the day before. I tried resetting it but to no avail. Does anyone know how I could fix this. Also I have 2 other ipods that I am no longer able to sync. It comes up with a message (best I can remember) something to the effect that my itunes version is not compatible with my ipod. Please help. I'm tired of buying new ipods when the new hasn't even worn off of them!!!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod 40 gb click wheel completely dead!

I bought an iPod (40gb click wheel) in September 2004 for the grand sum of £299 – so it isn’t even 2 years old! It has totally died. Firstly in June it refused to be identified by my Dell computer; then it corrupted a part of the software in my computer which identifies my DVD/CD drive. I had that fixed by Dell – thank goodness it didn’t do any further damage! As a result of not being recognised by my computer I was unable to add additional tunes to it. The iPod was still working but then started to make lots of noises. It then stopped working altogether and produced the folder with!. I phoned the support line in early July and was told that there are several articles on the web site which could help – I followed the recommendations and it still continued to try to re-boot itself. I was also told that getting it fixed would cost me £166 as the one year warranty had run out !!!! (Surely it should last longer than that – also I can buy something new which is more reliable for less than that!) The last stage was the final appearance of the apple logo, a black screen and now it is completely dead. It refuses to charge up with the battery and I’m absolutely livid. It doesn’t warrant being fixed. I hearby plan to return this lump of rubbish to Apple as I was on the verge of throwing it away but didn’t want to pollute the environment with whatever nasties lie within.

I've got the same problem mate. The clickwheel started to ge dead in places like around skip forward track area, (which was annoying to say the least.) But the other day it completely died, now it tries to start up showing the apple logo, then you can hear inside the hardrive spin up then a loud click then it tries this again about 5 times before showing the support website.
Ive probably had the ipod for about 2 years.
Annyoing since its a 40gb ipod and i've barely filled up 13gb. I might take it into see what the shop says but i sort of know its gonna be not worth repairing. Plus the video ipods are looking really good.
