Completing import/previews with unreadable files

I was just importing last night's job of 2500 images shot during a theater production into lightroom 2.6 - 64 bit on my 8 core Mac pro tower running 16 Gigs of RAM. As I often do after such a production - I return to the studio - move all the files from the cards into a single folder on my desktop then import them all into lightroom creating copies of the RAW files and the catalogue itself onto redundant hard drives. I also always create 1:1 previews for quick and easy viewing at any point in time. It's usually late in the evening, and I set Lightroom about this task while I go home to sleep, then begin my edit in the morning with catalogue built and previews made.
HOWEVER-- after the catalogue was imported but BEFORE lightroom began making previews, lightroom posted a dialogue box on my screen advising me that a file was somehow unreadable -- either corrupt, or the wrong kind of file, COMPLETELY STOPPING THE TASK OF BUILDING THE PREVIEWS.
So I returned in the morning, no previews were made -- and two hours later I'm not even 1/2 way through building the previews. SO-- ADOBE people -- or any lightroom users out there -- is there any way for Lightroom to continue building previews instead of waiting for me to respond to this dialogue box first. Lightroom assumes apparently that I at my computer to respond to this dialogue box.
It seems like such a horrible waste of my time when I'm under deadlines to get this work done. I'm happy for the reminder that one of my files was a movie file or a corrupt file or whatever -- please lightroom... sequester these file on my desktop somewhere and finish the job!
Does anybody know if there is a preference I can click on or off to prevent this from happening. Trying to edit large files that are 10- 21 megapixels and waiting for 1:1 previews to open takes a long time of and by itself -- but waiting and extra 4 hours to have previews built that should have been made while was asleep is something that should NOT be happening. I'm about to make two changes that should speed up my workflow i.e: install a fast ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB of RAM, plus upgrade to snow leopard to take better advantage of the 8 cores of processors that my machine has. But even these upgrades would be for nought when Lightroom STOPS the process in it's tracks.
HELP-- SOMEONE -- PLEASE!!!

thanks for the note Bill -
I also posted my question to the forum for new features in the next lightroom iteration. Seems like once the import stops and before the previews are made -- that's when the dialogue box opens stopping the previews from being made. I'm not an engineer and I don't write code, but it seems to me the software could and should continue with the task at hand ( import AND build previews) for all the image files that it has correctly imported, while it segregates and does not import -- and later confirms the unreadable files.
Actually I don't think that Lightroom actually imports the disputed files at all -- if they are .mov files I don't think they can -- if they are corrupt files, they advise me of the camera given file name - not the re-named file that my import menu would give it, leading me also to believe that they were not imported into the catalogue or moved into the assigned destination folders. I would love to get some clarification from adobe on this.
I would imagine that this is a matter of overlooked scriptwriting that has not yet come to their attention... or a script that could be made better if enough people had a problem with it. I was very much hoping to get a response from someone at adobe to my query -- but nothing yet -- hopefully the response will be the elimination of this roadblock in the next version or update. Often it's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, and maybe there are not as many people out there as myself who have run into this problem, and posted inquiries to the forum. Theater shooters like myself who might shoot 2,500 to 3,500 images in 2-3 hrs, event photographers, sports photogs, wedding photographers and fashion photographers are all the kind of people who can shoot thousands of images in a day or a matter of hours. Unless we are sitting at the computer when the import finishes, we will be waiting for previews to build - be they standard or 1:1 previews - until after we have read and checked the warning dialogue. hopefully this will be fixed soon or we will get some sort of explanation.
I have a lot of admiration for the folks at adobe, their genius, their talent, their accomplishment and their responsiveness to our issues, so I hope this problem gets addressed soon - I cannot be the only one out there who was STOPPED at this point in the workflow.
cheers, and best of luck

  • Can lightroom 3 complete 1:1 previews when unreadable files are detected

when lightroom 2.6 detects an unreadable file, be it a .mov or a corrupt file, it stops the process of creating 1:1 previews until I answer the dialogue box that pops up after the import and before the previews are built. Can it please allow the process of building previews to continue, while sequestering the questionable file, moving them to a folder to be dealt with later. Can't this be some kind of checkbox in the import dialogue or a simplified feature that is automatic? My understanding is that you are now thinking of simplifying the import dialogue box for the less informed, while I'm hoping it can still provide us with more detailed options to speed up our work. When I build a catalogue of 2500 to 3000 images that I just shot on deadline, and want to ingest that material overnight and get back to my edit in the morning, this little glitch makes life IMPOSSIBLY SLOW.
    see my story below:

No one's harmed as we all know this since forever.
It is wel documented on the forum.
By not saving it with the pdf option check reduces the size a great deal many users use it to save master files and then do a save as with the option turned on when they place it in another application.
In case you are not familiar with this option turned off and printed to a postscript printer the file will print properly even if it does not display the right way.
At least that is my understanding.

  • Importing problems with MP4 files.

A friend of mine wanted me to make a DVD  with some media files that they sent me (all with .mp4 extentions). I've just purchased CS6 Premuin Pro so I thought I'd try ENCORE to do it with (previously I've been using DVDStyler). However I had problems with importing the mp4 files they sent. Some of the files import OK, but with others I get this error:
Couldn't import file FILENAME, Quicktime and/or the appropriate codec do not appear to be installed.
Now I did have Quicktime Alternative, along with the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack installed. Did a bit of searching and found advice to remove the K-Lite pack and Quicktime Alternative, and update with Quicktime and another set of Codecs (I've installed the Windows 7 codec pack v4.06, as I'm using Win7). However, I'm still getting the same error message when I try and import some of the files. I don't know their origin or what created them as such. However, I did download a copy of MediaInfo and got the following for each type of file.

Just what is the problem here? Why will the first type of file import OK, but the second not, and what can be done about that (do I need to load an extra codec, and if so what)?  The odd thing is that using a program like DVDStyler, I can load those files and actually build a DVD. And yes, I know that's an entirely different program, but it just seems odd to me that an open-source program seems to do something Encore can't (and I'd much rather use Encore to build DVDs). No doubt this is something obvious but I'm a novice with Encore and Premiere, so I'm missing it anyway.

Codec packs, even the "better" ones, do not typically provide codecs that Premiere and Encore can use.
The "problem" file is a flash format (whether it is an mp4 container or not).
"Consumer" type DVD authoring/burning applications, and even more so, all in one apps like windows movie maker etc, may be more "powerful" when you are trying to take a large range of formats and create a DVD with relatively few options. This is not Encore's strength.
Encore will reject almost anything that has flaws it isn't able to handle, but more importantly (once you get to this step), it will treat as noncompliant (and  re-transcode) anything that is not DVD compliant.
My guess is that you need to get  the flash into something that will work better for transcoding to DVD compliant.
I would first try to bring one of the problem files into Adobe Media Encore, and see if you can export an MPEG2-DVD file.
Not that, while there are some less known DVD resolutions, I assume you are going to end up with 720x576 PAL. I wonder what the quality will look like....
If you are just looking to get the files onto a DVD to play on a DVD player, just stick with DVDStyler.

  • Import issue with CR2 file, Lightroom 5.3 & OS X Mavericks

    Hi there,
I really hope someone can help. I've just switched laptops and installed LR 5.3 on to OS X Mavericks. Upon import I get an error message saying that the CR2 files are unreadable. So I took the same card and tried to import them on the old cranky laptop that is running Lightroom 5.2 and on OS X Mountain Lion and it imported without a problem (12 photographs took a long time but they were all readable and in LR) This is crazy frustrating. Does anyone know of a way around it? Have I done something wrong? The camera is a Canon 6D and Ive had no issues prior to this with Lightroom 5 on the old lap top.
    Thank you!!

    Kim,
When LR tells you the file cannot be read, what it really means is that the file cannot be written to the folder that you specified for your Copy or Move operation on import. (Yeah, it's a stupid message.)
Generally, this means that the folder you're writing to is set so that your user ID doesn't have permission to write there.
Try repairing permissions and make sure you have write access.
    Hal

  • Unable to import/preview any video file using Lightroom 5/5.2

    Hi,
I am a fairly new user to Lightroom (around 4 months), and have been fascinated by the capabilities of this software when it comes to photos. From the start, I used to notice (but chose to ignore) that lightroom would not be able to import any of my video files successfully (all in supported formats such as avi, mov, mp4, usually mov from my Nikon DSLR). Recently, I have started digging around to find a solution for this and fix this issue of not being able to preview or import any video file. I have gone through most of the related posts around the interwebs about this (including installing QuickTime, checking my AntiVirus, checking specific processes whether they are running or not). As a last attempt to resolve this, I am hoping to get some expert help on this form. As a sample of the error message which I get to see everytime is attached below. Also given below is my system info. I can provide further debugging information if required, but I really, desperately want this to work and be able to import videos. Thanks a bunch!

  • Import VM with snapshot files

    hi ,
a customer send a VM folder  , it has two snapshot drives
Once i import it to hyper-v 2012  , the snapshot is empty   (Snapshot are not imported)
how to import the VM with its snapshot files?

If the VM was exported and it contained snapshots - the snapshots should be there when you Import the entire folder.
You should be able to look at the source XML configuration and see if there are snapshot references in what they originally sent.
If they only sent you virtual disk files and not a configuration then you have differencing disks, nothing more.

  • Pb export/import keywords with psd file

While working with export and import of metadata, I found the following strange behavior with LR1.3.1:
    0) Initial keywords
    1) In LR, I modified keywords of a psd file
    2) Export of metadata
    3) Remove all keywords of the picture in LR
    4) Then, reload of keywords.
=> I should get keywords defined at the step 1
and I always get initial keywords (step 0). It appears than something is not working as I would expect when importing, just exported data.
Any help to understand this behavior or workaround would be welcome.
    Thanks all,
    PH

As Curt stated, the keywords are written to the file itself and will not be cleared using the clear and import function in Keywords.
Using the clear and import option is useful if you want to get rid of the default keywords or have a better new list for import at hand. If you already have assigned some of these old keywords to files and they are not present in your current list then they will show as italic in the keyword panel (usually at the bottom under "Other keywords") once a file with this old keyword is selected in Bridge.
When a keyword is in italic then you have the option to make it again persistent in your new list using right mouse click menu or leave it as it is. Using the find option in the menu should provide you with the result of all present keywords in the files you are searching in, regardless if they are in the list or not.

  • Final Cut X import issue with .fcpxml files

I am trying import an .fcpxml file into my Final Cut X, but am receiving the following error: "The document "File Name.fcpxml" could not be opened. Inavlid argument."
My editor created these .fcpxml files on a different computer, but none of the source files were changed or moved.
I greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.

here is a link to the first video files i exported. the quality of one of them was pixelated, it was pro res 422 but with h26 encoding . the other was something I can't remember.
as for the type of format of the picture I am filming, it is also a screen shot that gives you the info on the format of the film clip.
    hope that helps

  • Import problem with DMP file

    Hi all
I am using oracle 9i and I have problem in import problem.........
when i try to import the DMP file it gives me the error,
IMP-000200: long column Too larege for column buffer size <22>
can any body please tell me how to get out of this error....
actually I have a table in export file that has round about 2 lac rows....
The problem occurs on that table.
Any help will be highly appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Shayan
    [email protected]

The correct error code is IMP-00020 not 200
What's your current buffer set to when imp?
IMP-00020: long column too large for column buffer size (number)
Cause: The column buffer is too small. This usually occurs when importing LONG data.
Action: Increase the insert buffer size 10,000 bytes at a time (for example). Use this step-by-step approach because a buffer size that is too large may cause a similar problem.
As adviced, increase 10000 and try again.

  • CS6 After effects Pro Import AAF with R3D files

It can't find the footage, because it appends an ".mov" to the footage name it searches for.
Example: the file name ist "A001_C001_0616GK_001.R3D", but Pro Import searches for "A001_C001_0616GK_001.R3D.mov"
How can i fix that. Because replaceing 100 footage files is an idiot work to do.

UPDATE: I searched in the forum and throwing away the DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component seems to have been the solution for me! Running smotthly until now!
    Thanks!

  • Lost my Pictures with an update to 10.6.8  Says "unreadable file..could not be imported"

I have a MacBook. When I updated to 10.6.8 I went to look for my photos, I got the following message " Unreadable files : 1" underneath that heading it says " The following file could not be imported." (The file is in the iPhoto library folder.)  In a white box it has the following line: /Users/sophianecak/Pictures/iPhoto/Library/Thumbs64Segment.data
I go to the library and get the same messgae.
    HELP!

I had similar problems and I always avoid auto-updates.
If the original Snow Leopard works boot from the DVD and erase zeroing the whole Machine after a User Folder BackUP with Carbon Copy Cloner
If the DVD doesn't work or the DVD reader in the machine is dead.
Find a SL install copy a drive or a pendrive
1 Install snow Leopard from any Snow Leopard DVD in a hard drive or a pan without systems including Rosetta and Qtime 7
2 Download the 10.6.8 Combo package from Apple
3 Upgrade the new installed system in your drive or pen
4 Use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up "ONLY" the user folder with the various foders
5 Boot the computer from your Drive or Pen erase zeroing the whole machine it will take time but just erasing is never enough as a lot of dangerous stuff hides there,
6 With Carbon Copy duplicate the newly installed system in your GranPa computer or using the original disk and the COMBO upgrade
7 Back up the various files, pictures with CCC in the machine
This takes time but it works usually.

  • Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar, etc. Malware?

    Specs:
    iMac 10.8.5
    3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, security software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar and are randomly corrupted, when I entered something in the Youtube searchbar (when it was still working) it send me to a site with sexadds.
I tried restart my iMac and when I was logged back in, my dock preferences were reset.
Also tried to download some security software to check my Mac for malware, but when I did, I tried several, I got a notification that said something like 'dumpfiles (don't know if this is the right translation...) damaged'.
I'm taking screenshots from all the weird notifications I get and even three quarters off the screenshots I took in the last three hours are already unreadable.
It started this morning when I tried opening a Premiere Pro file on which I worked the night before.
When I tried opening it, it said the file was damaged and could not be openend.
I tried opening it with AE or importing the file in a new project but nothing helped.
When I tried looking for autosaves, this is the really weird part, there were none.
Even though there are autosaves from my other projects, this one was completely gone.
It looked like the day before never happened on my computer.
Also when I openend Premiere all the recent projects had been wiped.
So at first I thought it was a Premiere Pro failure.
But than, later on the day, I tried loading some RAW files from my compact flash card.
This is where I would get an error (error -36) which said some data cannot be read or written.
I tried importing the files with a view different technics, from dragging to importing via Lightroom and I succeeded with Image Browser.
But when I tried moving the files to an other folder the same error occurred.
While dealing with this issue I wanted to put on some soothing music on youtube.
This is when the next weird thing occurred: youtube wasn't completely loading in Chrome. I refreshed a view times, checked the internet connection and still no difference.
When I tried in Safari it did work but when I clicked enter on the searchbar in Youtube, a page with sexadds appeared (I didn't install AdBlock in Safari...).
I read about this 'phishing' where you are redirected to a site were a possible malware installment can take place...
I don't know if it's connected to any of the problems I've been having but I just never experienced this on a mac, I have been a Mac user for 10 years now.
On top of it all, internet started working worse and worse and now it's not even working at all. I had to fill in the password over and over, normally it remembers.
Just like my system preferences, all the preferences I had with Chrome where also reset.
Also somewhere in between I got this notification: Mac OS X must restore library to run programs. Type your password to allow.
To me this is all very weird and suspicious. I have clearly no idea what's going on. Could this be another sort of trojan horse or malware?
Some background info which could be helpful for solving this mystery:
two months ago the one year old Fusion Drive in my iMac just broke out of nowhere.
I got it replaced by a qualified apple repair store.
When I got my computer back, all the files where gone.
I got on the internet without AdBlock installed yet.
A game or whatever it was, can't clearly remember, got installed by accident.
    I deleted it immediately.
Only two weeks later, I couldn't log in to my account. It didn't recognize my password and username.
So I brought my mac back to the store.
Here the repair guy said it was a minor thing and he just needed to reconnect my account. He also mentioned he found a downloaded game name Sparta and it probably had something to do with the error.
I asked him; could it be a virus? He replied no way.
I don't know why I couldn't be a virus, just because it's a mac doesn't mean it cannot be done.
So today I tried installing anti virus software (such as avast- was in a weird language looked like slovenian, clamxav - was in slovenian) but I couldn't install them.
PLEASE help me! I don't know what to do anymore, I work fulltime and I need my computer, I have no time to bring it in for repair, are there other perhaps easier ways?
Could this be the work of a virus or a malware? Or is it a disk permissions issue?

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Unreadable Files: cannot import files error message

I am trying to import old photos from a previous hard drive and get the following message-
    Unreadable Files: (# of files)
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
Then it will have the files and their locations that I am trying to open in the box below. These files can be opened with no problems using Adobe Photoshop Elements 3, Canon's Image Browser as well as Preview. They originally came in as digital photos from a Canon digital camera. They used to be able to open in iPhoto with no problem. They either have a [.JPG] extension or none at all. There are a lot of them. Could it be they were used by an older version of iPhoto and are unrecognizable in this one?
I am running iPhoto 4.0.3 Any suggestions?

    David:
You just reminded me of one more thing you can try. Log in to another account on your iMac and see if iPhoto will import as it should. If it does then it's a problem with your primary account. One cause might be another preference file that's in conflict with iPhoto. You can use Preferential Treatment to check for any corrupt or damaged user or system preference file. It's not foolproof however. If none are found and it sill won't import, then you can try the following method developed my another user:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Prefs folder (in its entirety) to the desktop. Start iPhoto. Determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up. Except for those items that are obviously not related, move the contents to the old Prefs folder on the desktop, replacing what had been there. When in doubt, move the item. The worst thing that can happen is a harmless "alert" message. Then, trash what remains of the new folder. Finally, move the old (but modified) Prefs folder back to the library.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the old one back to its original location.
If stlll no go, I'd try reinstalling the 10.2.9 COMBO updater followed by a permissions repair.
