Complicated Hypothetical Set-Up, AEBS, AX, WRT54G

Hi everyone,
Today I successfully replaced my WRT54G with a new AirPort Extreme base station. But I was thinking of putting my WRT54G back to use.
I have an 802.11n card in my MacBook Pro. I have 2 Macs that are connected via 802.11g. (An iBook that has a card, and an old iMac that connects through an Airport Express).
As we know, to provide backwards compatibility, 802.11n suffers so the g's and b's can work.
But what if I selected the 802.11n 2.4GHz radio mode on the AEBS and connected my WRT54G to the AEBS via ethernet? That way, the AEBS would put off N signals, while the WRT54G could put off B+G.
Is this at all possible?
Brent

I also have a similar setup, to separate out my new N MacBook Pro 2.2GHz from an older iBook and PowerMac G4. I am having problems getting good performance out of the airport disk.
Here's the setup:
-Airport Extreme (N) connected to cable modem, wireless N only
-Belkin wireless G router connected to ethernet output of AE, wireless B/G
-500GB USB hard drive connected to AE
The two B/G computers connect through the Belkin router setup as an access point, no firewall. This allows them to access the airport disk feature. The MBP is the only computer using the AE wireless and I tested both 2.4GHz and 5GHz modes. Using 5GHz proves to be not much faster and reduces the range to almost useless in my house.
Here are Xbench 1.3 disk scores
iBook alone on Belkin (B) 1.0
G4 alone on Belkin (G) 3.0
MBP alone on AE 2.4 (N) 3.5-4.5 depending on location
MBP alone on AE 5.0 (N) 3.0-4.9 depending on location
G4 ATA-100 Drive 39.2
MBP SATA Drive 30.7
I was under the impression that running a new MBP with the Airport Disk feature of AE would provide fast hard drive speeds over wireless N. I'm not seeing this to be true, which totally messes up my plans of housing a Lightroom library on the 500GB drive and using it from the MBP and G4.
What kind of disk speeds do you get with N? Any suggestions?
MBP 2.2, PM G4, iBook 3 Mac OS X (10.4.10) Airport Extreme (N)

Having trouble setting up a linksys WRT54GS router with verizon DSL using a westell 6100F modem. the modem works fine by its self  but the router will not connect  to the internet when installed like the cd tells you to.
online help and phone help has been less than helpful,  anyone have any Ideas?

Ok I found " Installing the liksys wireless router with a westell 6100 modem" in the verizon troubleshooting guides. printed the instructions so I would'nt forget. step 1 open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address field.  PROBLEM it comes up with a login screen that I don't know how to sign into. tried the obvious stuff. cannot get past the login screen. I knew this sounded to easy to be true. anyone have any ideas?

  • How to set up AEBS dual band as single network?

As I have it now, when I open Network Prefs and click on Advanced, I see two networks listed: my 5GHz network and presumably, my 2.4GHz nbetwork. The problem is that although I've listed my 5GHz network as my preferred network, it continually chooses the 2.4GHz network? Or that is what I see when I cherck my wi-ifi status in my menu bar.  I'm not sure why that is, but I've read that if I create a single network, my AEBS will automatically choose the appropriate network? If this is so, I'ds like to eliminate ther 2.4GHz network.

so I thought if I was able to merge both bands, then I could eliminate this happening?
You cannot "merge" both bands....they will always be separate signals....but you can assign the same wireless network name to both bands. That is the default setup for the AEBS, and the setting that most users should use.
Your Mac will connect to either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band automatically.
Your Mac will connect to the band that it thinks is the best quality.
Best "quality" does not necessarily mean the faster speed band. The Mac is looking for the best combination of speed, signal strength, low noise, interference and other things that Apple engineers won't tell us about.
Try removing the check mark in the box next to 5 GHz network name in AirPort Utility and test things out. You may find them better, or worse.

  • Any way to set an AEBS to auto-restart?

If I don't manually use the Airport utility to connect to the AEBS once a week or so, things like my Slingbox, and other network access gets extremely slow, and once the AEBS is restarted, things return to normal. Is there any way to have the AEBS automatically restart, given a specific time period?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

You could connect the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to a Christmas light timer or something similar.
Thee AEBS doesn't have a setting to force that to happen.

  • Why did the setting for my Linksys WRT54G router change spontaneously from encrypted to open mode?

I unplugged power to my Linksys WRT54G (802.11g) router for about six days.  It had been set for WEP 128-bit encryption.  When I replugged it, it identified itself as an open (non-encrypted) network.  I could use it by setting up a new network connection (unencrypted) on my PC, but could not access it using the original (encrypted) PC network connection.
After reinstalling the router, and setting it for WEP 128-bit encryption, it works fine again.
Can anyone explain why the router spontaneously went from encrypted to non-encrypted mode, as a result of being powered down for several days?  (Is this a bug or a feature?

Thank you.  As noted, I reconfigured it & it works fine again.  But do you have any idea why it "lost" its encryption setting by being powered-down?
In particular, is this likely to happen in future if I power-down Linksys?

  • Help- set my AEBS to IPv6 local, now the menue to set it back is DISABLED

Hello Genii, please excuse my engrish, I am no native speaker.
    Here is the deal.
Due to the fact that my AEBS was flakey, I followed the various threads here and
finally set my settings via "Airport utility" to IPv6 "local".
It helped stability, but now my connection seems slower ;-(
Now here comes the strange consequence:
I cannot revert the setting, since now the menue button within Airport utility
    is INACTIVE/unresponsive.
I switched firmware back to 7.1, still no dice.
Anyone has a link or location of Base station firmware 7.2 ?
    Please help
    thank You!

You can use this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212  to restore the device, but  please note that everything that hasn't been backed up without a code (purchases excluded) will be lost.
    Good luck

  • Web-based Set up page corrupted WRT54G

I have a WRT54G router. I want to go in and change the password and a few other administrative things plus upgrade firmware. The web-based page is corrupted or something. The fields have very limited text and there are no tabs or html links visible. I tried other addresses but the default seems to be the only one that will even bring up the sereen. Is there another way to upgrade the firm ware and make administrative changes seperately from the web-based page?

To view the router's web pages:
Use Internet Explorer, it usually works.
    JavaScript must be enabled.
Use a computer that is wired to the router.
In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall. If you are using Zone Alarm, right click on the ZA icon in the system tray (lower right corner of screen) and then click "Shutdown ZoneAlarm", and see if this fixes your problem.
If you are using Noton Internet Security with the Add-on Pack, also be sure to turn off the Pop-up Blocker.
If you cannot get anything at 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ? Point your browser to the "Default Gateway", then login to your router.
If all of the above fails, power down your entire system, unplug it from the wall, wait one minute, then power up and try again.

  • Setting up WCG200 and WRT54G together

I have a WCG200 router connected to my internet provider cable
and I have multiple computers connected to a WRT54G router.
Is there a way to connect these two linksys wireless routers to
    access internet by my computers?
    Thank you.
    M.-A. Cantin

what you are looking to do cannot be done using a wireless connection. The WCG has to be hardwired to the WRT for it to work the way you want.
Also if you could be a bit more specific as to what it is you wanna do exactly.

  • Complicated email set up. Please help.

    Hi there.
I have been using a yahoo email address that sinks with my iphone for both friends and business. But recently I've started to use my domain email more for business ([email protected]) but can't give up the yahoo one as a lot of old contacts still only have that.
My solution has been to set up my yahoo account to send and receive from my @domain email, and that works fine.
The problem starts with the iphone. It won't download domain emails using my yahoo account unless I've first downloaded them into my inbox via the web. Once they are there I then can't send from my domain email via the yahoo account on the iphone.
So... I then set up a separate account on iphone for my domain email. I could download my domain emails but couldn't send them. However even if i could send them, they wouldn't then all be in my yahoo sent folder.
If you're still with me I guess what I'm after is a way of having both my yahoo and domain emails come to the same online email client that can sync with my iphone, and with all my emails stored in one place be able to send from both accounts on my iphone and have the sent emails stored in the same folder.
Any help would be highly valued.
    Ta

I don't believe you can end up with all your email in the same folders on your iphone from two different accounts. I just forward all my email to a single IMAP account and use that one on my iphone. Maybe someone else has a better solution?

  • Set up linksys wireless wrt54g to macbook

I am getting internet directly from the router that my isp sent me. I hooked up the linksys router and still get internet. When I go to the linksys website to set up wireless, it is not letting me save anything, saying it unexpectedly dropped from the server. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? Any good websites or instructions I can follow?

Well, there are several options for you.
I believe the Embarq modem is actually a rebranded ZyXel modem/router, and has default private IP address 192.168.2.1. When you connect the Macbook directly to this unit, check your Mac's IP address in Network Preferences and confirm that it is 192.168.2.x (x could be any number from 2 upwards). If it's 192.168.1.x (eg 192.168.1.100) you'll need to reconfigure the Linksys, because 192.168.1.1 is the Linksys' default IP address too. Both units cannot have the same IP address.
As I said above, you have to configure your units so that only one of them acts as the router/DHCP server. It doesn't really matter which one you choose. Here are your options:
    1) First, you can actually have the Linksys router do the DSL login for you. In this case, the modem acts purely as a passive bridge. You would have to attach the modem directly to your Macbook and configure it into bridge mode according to its directions (either through a web interface or through the "telnet" command in Terminal). Once it is in bridge mode, you would set your Linksys router to perform the DSL connection. Contact your internet provider to get the connection values (usually a user name plus password, and you need to know whether your connection uses PPPoE or DHCP).
    2) You can have the modem make your DSL connection, but disable its routing/DHCP functions.
    3) You can have the modem do the DSL connection and routing/DHCP. The Linksys would purely be a bridge and wireless access point, probably using a static IP address on the ZyXel's subnet (eg 192.168.2.200, so that you can easily access its web interface).
You can of course replace the Linksys with another router, but you would still have to make one of the above choices. Your ISP (CenturyLink?) should be able to give you some assistance too.

  • I need Help Setting Up Wireless Router WRT54G on NTL

Hi, I've managed to setup a few home wireless networks in my time but I'm having problems with this. My gf's ISP is NTL and it is connected via a cable modem (rather than the set top). I registered my laptop using the installation software and the internet connection is working fine. I attempted to setup the router and I could connect to it, however I could not connect to the internet through the router. Previously with other routers I found an option where you could input the user/pass so that the router was automatically connected to the service, but I could not find this option. Does anyone who has setup this wireless router with an NTL setup / or anyone at all have any idea how I go about setting it all up?
    Thanks in advance

I also found this thread which helps by showing when to clone the MAC address.
Using run cmd from XP's start menu and typing ipconfig /all will show the MAC address of your machine's NIC card, if you need it.

  • Setting AEBS for Stealth mode?  Is it possible??

    Hello,
I have a Airport Extreme Base Station and I currently have all the default settings for it. I know that the AEBS has a firewall, but I don't really know how to configure it. When I test it's security level by going to a website and running port scans etc... (I go to www.grc.com) I'm getting responses that the ports are responding but are "closed". Is there a way to set the AEBS to have a stealth setting??
I used to have a SMC Barricade router before I got my mac and the AEBS and when I ran these types of tests before they always came out as stealth on all my ports.
Does anyone out there know how to set this base station to show up as stealth?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I've asked this question before, too by going to an Apple Store to ask one of their Geniuses what to do about this problem. The response I got was basically that I didn't know what I was talking about and that I was stupid for asking. Usually the Apple folks are cheerful and happy to help; must have been a bad fruit in the lot.
Past messages on this board (I searched for "stealth") mention a similar stance: don't worry about ping, just make sure your ports are closed and/or services disabled.
The objective of stealth mode is to make sure hackers don't even know we exist so that they won't have reason to port scan our IP in the attempt to hack in. —When I ran a development web server for a while I monitored log files via Console seeing all kinds of external hack attempts!!
What I'm looking for is `stateful packet inspection` with all ports `stealthed`. Better yet, the AEBS needs to provide a configuration wizard for customers both who just want to run it out of the box AND include expert options (i.e. LinkSys, NetGear, D-Link, ...) so that we can fine-tune the firewall to our needs!
The main reason for my reply was to show that others have the same concerns and to solicit a meaningful response from Apple that satisfies this concern.
    ~Cheers
PS: I've also used grc.com to test my vulnerability from the outside world as well as asking external SysAdmins to port-scan my system.

  • Airport Extreme and Linksys WRT54G v8 set up in WDS mode not working

Hi, I am trying to set up my Linksys WRT54g v8 router with DD-WRT v8.0.0.6 firmware as a WDS remote to my Airport Extreme Base Station set up as the WDS main, with WPA2 personal encryption, and it appears that they are talking to one another, but when I plug in a mac with ethernet to the Linksys, I can hit the linksys router to program it but it won't go out to the internet and gets a self-assigned IP.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Duane posted a list of known WDS compatible devices about 6 weeks ago and the Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS were shown as compatible, but not v5. Your post indicates that you have v8, so this may not be possible.

  • Trouble with WPA in WDS between AE and WRT54G

Hi folks, I've have WDS with my AEBS as a remote base station and a Linksys WRT54G as the main base station. I've be running smoothly with 128 bit WEP encryption for about 6 months, so last weekend I tried upgrading the network to WPA personal .
As soon as I go to WPA the AEBS stops talking to the WRT54G. My G4 powerbook can get an get an IP address directly from the WRT54G (when it's in range) so I'm confident the WPA password is correct. Other than changing the wireless security settings I left the AEBS configuration the same as was working for WEP.
I'm running Airport Admin 4.2 and I've tried both firmware 5.6 and 5.5.1 -- same problem in each case. No connection between AEBS and WRT54G.
I had hoped the AEBS would send and error messages to the system console, but so far I have found no useful diagnostic to debug this problem.
Anyone out there get WPA encryption working for a wireless distribution system between AEBS and WRT54G ?
    Thanks,
    David

    Thanks for the reply Henry.
    Hmm... I'm running WRT54G firmware version: v4.20.6, May. 26, 2005.
The SSID's are the same (WEP still works) and personal WPA in the WRT54G is set up using a pre-shared key and TKIP algorithm.
And yet still with DHCP turned on I see that my AEBS is generating "local" IP addresses 256.xxx.xxx.xxx rather than getting an address from the range served by the WRT54G. Since this same configuration work using 128 bit WEP I'm assuming the issue is that the AEBS and WRT54G aren't talking properly.
Do you have a pointer to the previous discussion that suggested WPA on an Linksys AEBS WDS is possible? ... maybe I can contact the author directly.
    Thanks again,
    David
