"complicated" internet question

Hi there!
I have a iBook G4 that i use to wirelessly connect to the internet. i have a desktop in my room, with windows XP home, and i want to use the g4 to connect wirelessly to the internet(the modom is connected to my moms comp on the other side of the house)
i bought a cross-over cable, and connected them, and went to "share" in prefrences and activated internet sharing. The PC says its connected, but it wont get on the internet. what am i doing wrong??

First, only the computer directly connected to the modem can share an internet connection. Second, you don't need a cross-over cable. Third, you should use a router, preferably wireless so you don't need to connect any cables, rather than using Windows internet sharing. But if you continue to use internet sharing then you will need to use a switch to connect other devices. Because a switch is not wireless you would probably need to get a wireless access point to connect to the switch. A wireless router (4-port) would be much easier. A good choice would be a D-Link DI-524 (should be less than $70 USD.)

Setting up a local Ethernet network
Equipment needed:
Cable/DSL modem: usually supplied by the ISP
Gateway/Router: at least a 4-port router, but you can get them with more ports if you need them. (Alternatively, you can get a switching hub to provide additional ports.)
CAT 5 Ethernet cables: one cable is needed for each device connected to the router plus one to connect the router to the cable/DSL modem.
1. Connect the Cable/DSL modem to the router's WAN port using an Ethernet cable (CAT 5 for 10/100.)
2. Connect each computer to the router's LAN ports using Ethernet cables. If you have network printers, etc. connect them to a LAN port on the router. If the router doesn't have enough ports, then you will need to purchase one with more ports or connect a switching hub to the router.
3. Now, for each Mac open its Network preference pane. Select the Built-in Ethernet port for configuration. In the TCP/IP configuration window set the connection/configuration to DHCP from the dropdown menu. Set your Location dropdown menu to Automatic and the Show dropdown menu to Built-in Ethernet.
4. Shut everything off. First, turn on the Cable/DSL modem and wait for the connect lights to indicate it has connected to the ISP. Next, turn on the router and wait to see if the Cable/DSL modem's communication status light starts to flicker. Also, if there is a status light on the router it should show a connection. Last, power up the computer. If all is well the TCP/IP control panel or Network pref pane should indicate an IP has been obtained from the router, usually in the 192.168.nnn.nnn range. If it's 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you don't really have a connection.
5. If you have network printers connected each printer will have to be assigned its own unique IP address in the router's address range (usually 192.168.nnn.nnn.) Assign the printer(s) IP addresses above the number of computers that will be connected but within the router's DHCP address assignment range. Consult the router's documentation for that information. Consult the printer manual for how to assign an IP address to the printer. When you install the printer driver and/or Add the printer you will add it as an IP printer or LPR printer and use the IP address you assigned to the printer.

I had my itunes software on my laptop with the songs on a portable hard drive. The laptop was stolen, the portable hard drive was not. I installed itunes on the new laptop and pointed to the music on the portable hard drive and it is telling me I am not authorized to play certain songs although I have authorized the computer. Also when I try to snyc my iphone it is saying it is going to erase all the songs on the iphone and replace them. I have purchased songs on the phone that are not in my itunes.
    How do I resolve this?

Have you tried to play one of the songs in iTunes? It should then ask you to authorize them.

  • A few DVR / Internet questions

I am holding off buying a WD DVR Extender until the release of IMG 1.9 (Bucks County, PA). I have a couple questions about using external storage:
    1. In what format (.avi, .ts, .mpg, etc) are the recordings ?
    2. Can the recordings be off-loaded to my computer for storage there ?
    3. Will it be possible to move DVR recordings from the internal drive to the external one ?
As far as internet goes, I have 35/35 now and want to upgrade my wired network to gigabit. I understand Verizon won't issue the gigabit router unless you pick their top plan (150gb) which is mucho-expensive. Is there another way to achieve a gigabit network ? My actiontec router is fed with coax instead of CAT5e.
    Thanks in advance,
    Glenn

As far as moving the expander drive, if I unplug it and hook it to my computer will that mysteriously cause it to self-destruct ? Why would this require my DVR to re-format again after hooking it back up ?
I'm trying to understand - that's all. I see you're a "Gold Contributor" but does that mean you work for Verizon ?
You misunderstood my statement.  If you hooked the drive up to a DIFFERENT DVR it would have to be re-formatted (the content is coded somehow to the specific DVR on which it was formatted).
And no I am not a Verizon employee. Being a gold contributor just means I have been here a while (since the forum started), been helpful in trying to answer users questions, and in general help other subscribers.  That is also why I was one of the first group invited to be a part of the group known as CL (Community Leaders) - a recognition for a fellow subscriber's contribution to the community.
I don't know that any of the information regarding encryption, formats, etc. has been published on any of the public boards.  I signed up for and was accepted into the beta test for 1.9 and was told by the developers during the testing that encryption and locking to a specific DVR were requirements by the content providers to allow the removeable storage.  I have not tested or verified this just as I have never tried to to find a way to break the QAM encryption.  If you wish to try and crack the sytem then that is up to you.

  • Ipod touch internet question???

    i have two questions:
    1. can you view videos online on a ipod touch that are on websites using safari (excluding youtube)like movie6.net, ign.com, tv-links.co.uk or google video.
    2. as well does it cost to use the internet on a ipod touch my friends say that you do have to pay to use it.

In no way are there fees linked to Apple or AT&T for internet use on the iPod Touch. As Trey said, you may have to pay to use a public access point, but this is very rare and costs little, when it costs any at all.

  • Internet question...

I would like to get an ipod touch for Christmas.
See, I live in a small town, where iPhone service will not arrive until late 2009...so until then, I would like to get an iPod touch. So...
I have a few questions...I do not think there is a wifi "Hotspot" very near my house.
I DO have a wireless internet router for my laptops internet though...will that work with the iTouch's internet?
Secondly...what happens when I am no NEAR a wifi area...like on a roadtrip...will I be WITHOUT any internet?

I DO have a wireless internet router for my laptops internet though...will that work with the iTouch's internet?
Yes. There is no technical difference between a home wireless router and a public wireless hotspot.
Secondly...what happens when I am no NEAR a wifi area...like on a roadtrip...will I be WITHOUT any internet?
    Yes.

  • Complicated upgrade question

ok, here's the deal. i have an iphone 4, not eligible for a fully subsidized 4s. my dad is eligible for an upgrade for his 3gs. he gave me his blessings to use his upgrade to get a 4s for myself. we're on separate at&t accounts, and he does not live in the same state as me. how do i go about utilizing his upgrade while maintaining his service on his 3gs?
an apple store employee told me he has to be there in person to purchase the phone. since he's out of state, what if i order it online for him and have it sent to me. could i then put my sim card in it, and just start using it? his 3gs sim card won't be shut down, will it? the apple store employee told me his sim card would be deactivated if he bought it in-store. do i just have to make sure NOT to activate it with the new sim card in it?
if i'm over-complicating this, any suggestions on how to go about this given my circumstances? thanks in advance for your input.

I purchased 3 Palm Pre Plus phones on a family plan over a year ago on one year contracts.  Then in Feb of last year I added another one to the family plan but as a 2 year contract.  My first three phones all show that they are eligible for an upgrade now, and the one purchased in Feb. says "full price upgrade".  My plan says it's expiration date is 1/26/11. This doesn't make sense.  If you signed a 2 year contract in February 2010, your contract should end in February 2012.  Are you perhaps looking at the end date for this billing cycle?
So, I'm waiting for the Palm announce on 2/9/11 and I'm planing on upgrading all 4 phones to the new Palm phones and adding a line at the same time w/ another one.  After reading all of the posts about the early upgrades, N2Y upgrade (on 2 year contracts), and changes to the upgrades (for new customers - grandfathering any existing contract terms), my question is this:
    1. I think I can use my 3 "upgrade now" upgrades just fine and pick a 1 year contract again. Yes.
    2. Then, sometime (or when I call in?) I should be able to do an Annual renewal on the add a line w/ the 2 year contract - like in Feb after the 10 months have past. Only primary lines, and lines on individual plans with a calliing package value of $49.99 or higher qualify for an annual upgrade.  If this line is a secondary line, it will not be able to upgrade until 20 months of the contract have been fulfilled.
    3. Does the plan expiration date of 1/26/11 indicate that I will lose the annual upgrade on the 2 year plan add a phone since the phone plan expires 1/26/11 after the 1/16/11 date?? The changes coming on 1/16 only impact NEW customers and NEW contracts signed on or after that date.  So nothing will change until you sign a new contract.  I'm not sure where this 1/26 date is coming from, but it doesn't make sense as a renewal date for that line.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!  Ed

  • Printer/internet question

Can I get my printer on my main internet account and my guest internet account at the same time?

Hi, if your printer is a HP ePrint capable model it will have it own unique e-mail address that you can use to send content to for printing from any device capable of sending an e-mail.
Have you enabled your printers web services function to connect it to the internet? This would most likely have been done during setup of the new printer but can be done anytime after. Here's a link with more information on how to do that ePrint - Getting Started

  • Looking to buy an iphone (internet Question)

    Hi all
my phone is on its last legs and ive been looking to buy an iPhone
Im with o2 on my current phone and would like to keep it that way
My question is... What happens with the internet on an iphone? do you connect randomly to wireless signals? or do you have to pay say o2 to be able to use the internet for a certain time period?
    any information much appreciated

With an O2 iPhone contract (which you need to buy an iPhone from O2 unless you go PAYG), you get access to 'The Cloud' and "BTOpenzone" wireless hotspots where ever you are, as part of the monthly contract fee.
You're also free to use any free WiFi hotspots that are available where you are, such as in coffee shops, McDonalds etc.
Where there is no WiFi you connect to the internet via 3G or EDGE over the mobile phone network - also included in the monthly contract fee.
All the details are on the O2 web-site: http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/iphone.html

  • Macbook Internet Question

Hey guys, new Mac person here so if I ask an obvious question that's why. I recently ordered a new Macbook for school purposes and was wondering something about the internet connection.
My family uses a linksys wireless router for our computers. I was wondering if my Macbook would be able to connect to this router and use the internet off of it.
And if not, if the Airport Express would be able to connect and work with our main computer which is a Windows machine.
    Please help me! Thanks!

"Yeah, I trying to make a point to some people that they think Macs use some form of Alien technology..."
    Clearly they are - LOL!
It is the fault of ignorant people who think that Macs are not PCs. The industry as a whole as moved towards more standardization for the sake of manufacturing simplicity. Fewer proprietary parts means more people can use the same components.
You would never believe what I hear everyday at work about how USB and Firewire do not work with Macs and that there is no MS Office-like program for the Mac. One guy even tried to tell me that you needed "Apple-compatible" speakers for Macs - whatever that means.

  • Internet question about getting FiOS

    Hi,
    I had a quick question,
When I get FiOS (haven't ordered yet), how would they make one of my desktops wireless? Do they supply a wireless adapter in the computer setup fee?
    Thanks,
    aj

well  i have a belkin n adapter and its my second one - it likes to cut my internet off so thats why i was wondering if verizon offered anything good!!!
That might (or might not) be the adapter's fault. Is this the only wireless attachment you currently have? Have you tried any other wireless device(s) and not had the problem? Do you have the latest drivers for the Belkin adapter? Have you tied changing the channel (lots of things can interfer with the signal, wireless phones are famous for that)? I had a Belkin USB wireless adapter on my wife's PC for a long time and it worked very well (it was a G adapter, not N).
Here is another thought: why do you use the desktop wirelessly? Is it in a room where you have a TV that is going to be using FiOS TV service? If so, you can go to eBay and buy a Motoroa NIM 100 and split the coax into two connections, TV on one, NIM on the other, and hook the PC to the NIM via Cat 5 or 6 cable and have a wired connection. I did that for my wife, works great (except I didn't need to buy the NIM, I already had it from my initial FiOS installation - Verizon no longer uses those, although I understand some techs still have them on their truck, if the idea works, you might ask). Just another option...

  • Complicated Scripting Question

Here is a little background before my question-
I have been making DVDs that basically consist of a main menu and a chapter menu. I have only one track in my project for the video. When the viewer selects "play video" from the main menu the entire video track plays then returns to the main menu. When they select a chapter from the chapter menu the same video track plays from whichever chapter marker they selected.
I wrote a short script so if a viewer watches the video from the main menu and presses the menu button they will be brought to the main menu, and if they are watching the video via selecting a chapter they will be returned to the chapter menu when the menu button is pressed.
I did this by having a prescript for each menu (mov GPRM 0, Current Item)
and assigning a script to the menu button (Jump Indirect GPRM 0).
But..now I have to make a DVD which is just like this except it must have double the menus (one set in english, one set in portuguese). They will both share the single (bilingual) video track.
So I need to make a first menu which lets the viewer select their language, once they select that they need to be brought to their language's main menu.
My first question is can I write a script so that once they are brought to a main menu based on what language they chose, whenever they press the title button they will be returned to this main menu and not the language selection menu or the wrong language's main menu.
My second question is how would I write a script so when a viewer presses menu while watching the video they will be returned to the last menu the came from (main menu or chapter menu) keeping in mind that there are 2 sets of each menu.
I'm still new to scripting and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around all the different menus. If any one has the time to throw out any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
    Powermac G4 Dual 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.4)
    Powermac G4 Dual 450   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You know, there's times when stories are just dandy for sorting the problem, and there's times for scripts... this seems like a time for scripting to me! Drew - your solution will work, but it seems so long...
What I would do is this.
From the very first menu make each button to select the language go to a script - and then on to the correct 'main' menu:
    mov GPRM0, SPRM8
    div GPRM0, 1024
    Jump EnglishMenu If (GPRM0 = 1)
    Jump FrenchMenu If (GPRM0 = 2)
    Jump SpanishMenu If(GPRM0 = 3)
(I am assuming three buttons, and these three languages... you could have 36 different buttons and languages, of course.)
The next question is do you need to set up a particular audio stream? if so, I'd add it to the script above as a line before each jump statement.
Now that you have a value in a GPRM to identify the user choice, you can use it over and over. When you press the 'title' button, point it to a script which does this:
    Jump EnglishMainMenu If (GPRM0 = 1)
    Jump FrenchMainMenu If (GPRM0 = 2)
    Jump SpanishMainMenu IF (GPRM0 = 3)
Of course the name of your menus will be different, just select the correct one when writing the script.
Now for the menu call - this is assuming that you have a series of sub menus within each language choice. All I would do is set another GPRM each time I go to a different menu. So, assuming we are on the main menu for English and want to go to a chapter selection menu in English, I would go via another script:
    mov GPRM1, 1
    Jump EnglishSubMenu
For each other menu I would go via a similar script but set a different value each time. That way we know the language (value in GPRM0) and the correct menu (in GPRM1)
The menu call goes to this script:
    goto 4 If(GPRM0 = 1)
    goto 7 If(GPRM0 = 2)
    goto 10 If(GPRM0 = 3)
    Jump EnglishSubmenu If(GPRM1 = 1)
    Jump SecondEnglishmenu If(GPRM1 = 2)
    Jump AnotherEnglishMenu If(GPRM1 = 3)
    Jump FrenchSubMenu If(GPRM1 = 4)
    Jump SecondFrenchMenu IF(GPRM1 = 5)
    Jump ThirdFrenchMenu If(GPRM1 = 6)
    Jump SpanishSubMenu If(GPRM1 = 7)
    Jump SecondSpanishMenu If(GPRM1 = 8)
    Jump ThirdSpanishMenu If(GPRM1 = 9)
The goto commands are looking to see which language you are in and the jump commands take you to the correct menu as long as you set these values up when you moved between the menus. This entire script could be simplified further, but as it is it serves to illustrate the process you need to go through.
There we have it, two main scripts and a bunch of stand-alone scripts to set values... you will be able to easily stay within a branching menu system for a single language with this.

  • About to make the switch internet question

    Hey,
I am just about to make the switch and get a Mac Pro and I have a question that needs answering. I have two Linksys routers a Wireless-G and a Wireless-N. I need to know if I will be able to use either of these routers with a Mac? What I wanna do is hook the mac up directly to the router (Wired) as the main computer on my network and have all my windows computers hooked up to the router on wireless. I wanna get this figured out before I spend that big of a chunk of money.
    Thanks

Yes. A router is not platform specific (mac vs
windows). The only thing you won't be able to do is
upgrade the router's firmware, which requires a
    windows machine.
You most certainly can upgrade the LinkSys firmware from OS X. It doesn't work with Safari, but you can use Firefox, SeaMonkey, or Netscape (possibly others, though I have not tried it with any others).

  • Complicated easy question - ray tracing

    Hello,
i am working currently on one project - i have an optical system (some prisms, some lenses etc) and i want to make a VI to calculate propagation of a light ray - something like ray tracing.
I know that labview is not the perfect platform to deal with this issue, however i still would like to try.
My problem is as following: i want to calculate the propagation of a ray through a lens. I have the ray with some coordinate (y=const) and a plano convex lens - the front of a lens is a piece of a sphere. To calculate the propagation (using snell law) I have to find an angle between the ray and the line which is tangent to this lens-sphere in the point where my light beam hits the lens.
My procedure (on the piece of paper):
1.i know the coordinates of a center of a sphere (let's take (0,0)) and its radius r (x^2+y^2=r^2). I know the value of y=y_0 for which the ray enters the lens.
then i can calculate the x_0: x_0^2+y_0^2=r^2. Now i know the point where light enters the lens (x_0,y_0)
2.then just the usual procedure of finding equation for a line tangent to sphere (y=a*x+b):
i put y_0 and x_0 to this equation:
    y_0=a*x_0+b
and i can remove one unknown value (for example b): y=a*(x-y_0)+x_0
3.then i put such equation into the equation for sphere (x^2+y^2=r^2) and this is the quadratic equation which has only one unknown value x and one free parameter: a.
4.beacause i want to have tangent line, so it should have only one common point with sphere - so the quadratic equation should have determinant equal to zero (only one solution for x). This gives me an equation for a. I should find the value of a which satisfy this equation and then i know this tangent line and have the solution! uf....
Unfortunately i still didn't find a solution to implement this in labview (and i'm motivated beacuse most of the work for this project is already done). I was trying with the formula parsing and so on, but i didn't succeeded.
I will be really grateful for any hints or help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    helmik,
LabVIEW does not do symbolic math.  Once you have the equations solved on paper or reduced to a set which can be solved numerically, tehn you can program it in LV.
When I look at your math in the first post, I see that in (3) you describe an equation in x and a. However, this is not a quadratic equation but a fourth order polynomial with terms like a^2*x^2 and 2*a^2*x*y_0. So this is not so easily solved.
Is not the tangent to the sphere at right angles to the radius at that point? The angle of the radius can be calculated from x_0 and y_0 and the center of the sphere. Then add 90 degrees. One arctangent and no complicated equations.
