Complicated Issues With Intel iMac

So here we go:
Recently, after updating my QuickTime I restarted my iMac to a continuous "setup assistant" loop which from further research I came to find out that I wasn't the only one with this issue. So my solution to that was to go to the Apple Store and get an erase and install because I couldn't boot from my disk when the computer would start up.
Currently, my computer is hit or miss on startup. Sometimes it goes into the system like butter and times like today my computer LITERALLY takes 10-15 minutes to load fully. Upon load the computer functions at a fine speed but I don't understand why it would take this long to load the system. I do have an external HDD to use with Time Machine and often thought that that would be the problem on startup (getting confused about the startup disk or something) so I typically unplug it before startup and it still takes 10-15 minutes to reach my desktop. In addition, after the erase and install it never goes to the loading Leopard screen with the blue bar that goes around the screen right before you get to your desktop image.
Several things about this made me feel like resetting the PRAM was a good idea, however, whenever I restart the computer hold down OptionCTRL+PR it's like my computer ignores that. I do it right when the computer turns on and before the gray screen like the document says and the computer just skips it altogether and goes to the apple with the loading wheel. I have no clue what's wrong with my computer and wish it would function like the day before I updated QuickTime!
Any help?

Use the Command key, not the Control key to reset PRAM (Cmd-Opt-P-R).
That said, it appears you have no data on the new iMac to save, so why not proceed with a clean installation? Turn off your iMac, take the gray Installation DVD that came with your iMac and insert it in the DVD slot on the right side of your display case. Hold down the C key while pressing the power button, and let it startup from the DVD. Select English as your language, then select the Erase and Install option, and let the default configuration setup proceed. After about 45 minutes (unless you elected to let it install all the available foreign languages (Options button during setup phase)), it will finish and reboot your Mac.
After restart, answer the questions so it can setup your user account and connect you to the Internet for registration and software updates. You may want to proceed with the Install Bundled Software package on the Installation DVD at this point to get the iLife '08 suite installed, as well.
It would probably be wise to use Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) to erase your Time Machine external FireWire HD so it can start with a clean drive, as well. You don't want to save the damaged stuff that's surely on that drive if you used it for Time Machine previously. Then, go into System Preferences/Time Machine and select the erased FireWire drive to use it.

  • SERIOUS lag issues with Intel iMac

    Hello everyone,
I'm pretty frustrated right now. I've been having this serious lag issue with my new iMac for the past few days. I think it may have started after I ran the last security update.
    What happens:
When switching between apps, the system will hang for 1-3 seconds between doing anything. This includes typing, mouse requests, etc. It's VERY frustrating. I have activity monitor open currently, and I am seeing both Safari and SystemUIServer hogging up the CPU resources like CRAZY. I've even seen Safari recently give a CPU usage of 120%, right before I loaded this webpage. tis isn't just centralized to Safari too.... I have the following apps running:
    Adium 0.89.1
    FoireFox 1.5.0.8
    Safari
    Activity Monitor
    My Memory stats currently are:
    175MB Wired
    708MB Active
    618MB Inactive
    1.47GB Used
There should be no reason I'm getting these lags with just two web browsers and a chat client open.
Has anyone else expierenced the lags?? Any suggestions? I'm almost ready to reinstall OS X and not run the last security update. Thanks

    Hello Matthew
Are you running any maintenance scripts on a regular basis?
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
I would manually run this script from The X Lab, and my load times would improve greatly. The problem was, I would forget to run them untill I noticed web pages loading slow or iTunes and iPhoto taking for ever. It wasn't untill someone here in discussions suggested Anacron that I saw the light. WOW what a difference Anacron has been making in my overall system speed. My iMac has not been shutdown for 11days 5hrs 34mins (sleep or use only) and opening new App's, switching App's and web pages load as fast or faster than after a fresh start up. If your system is operating properly and you are having only what seems to be a slow or sluggish issue Anacron will make a difference.

  • Strange issue with Intel iMac

We have no issues accessing sites from most computers at our workplace. However on the iMacs (Intel based) some sites will not load. I get the error message:
Safari can’t open the page “web-site here” because it could not connect to the server “server here”.
Again all other computers on the network can access them fine....and this computer can access other sites fine....
    I have tried:
    1.) Resetting Safari
    2.) Re-installing the OS
All to no avail. Any ideas or information is welcome!

As nerowolfe said, you might check your hosts file. Open your finder window and then Go>Go to Folder and type in "/etc" (without the quotes) and you should be able to browse to the hosts file. Make sure it doesn't have any extra hosts (could have happened if the iMacs were installed using a remote install or some sort of cloning system).
Following is from my /etc/hosts file and may not reflect yours, but you're going to be looking for things with the exchangebankonline.com in them. May not solve your problem but it's a place to start. Let us know if this wasn't the problem and we'll go from there.
    Cheers.

  • Wake issues with 24" iMac

I am having the issue with my iMac lab. Units will go to sleep and when a student tries to use the unit there is no response from keyboard but mouse will respond. They need to be restarted to resolve the issue but should it go to sleep again we start the process all over. I have 17 in this lab and have been sending them in for repair two at a time. They replaced the DC/SATA cable on the first two and it resolved nothing. Resetting PRAM and PMU also did not correct the issue.
    Any ideas? Hardware? Software?

I have a computer lab with 25 with the same problem. I found this happened after they keyboard update. Has anyone really solved this problem with the keyboards not responding after the computers go to sleep? We have to restart several every day, every hour. What is apple doing with this?

Hi , I suhail khan from india and i am user of iMac system 10,1.These days i am facing the sound enabling issue with my iMac system I am not able to hear sound in my iMac system. So kindly suggest me how to enable sound in my iMac . Please no the needful.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. If you've recently plugged anything into the audio-out (headphone) port, plug and unplug it a couple of times.
    2. From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Sound ▹ Output
Check the settings. The internal speakers should be selected as the output device, the Mute box should not be checked, and the volume slider should be at least halfway to the right.
    3. Look inside the headphone port. If a red light is coming from the port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a headphone mini-stereo jack of the proper size.Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
    4. Boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime. It will take much longer than usual. You don't have to log in; just reboot as usual (without holding any keys) when the login screen appears. (Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.)
    5. Reset the NVRAM.
    6. Reset the SMC.
    7. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data as a precaution. You won't need your backup unless something goes wrong.
    8. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • IMac isn't loading a specific website (can't connect to that server), regardless of browser, though the same website will load on other computers on same network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?

Our iMac isn't loading a specific website (we get a message saying it can't connect to that specific server), regardless of browser (I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox). However, the same website, which is for a major medical provider, loads without any issue on our other computers on the same wireless network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings? All other websites seem to be loading without issue on the iMac.

... Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?
Possibly. Make sure you are not using a proxy server. Look in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > "Change Settings..." This will take you to the applicable Network Preferences. Make sure that nothing is selected in the "select a protocol to configure" list. It should look like this:
    Still not working?
Locate your Terminal app. It is in your Utilities folder. Open Terminal.
In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
This will produce a list of all your account login items.
While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.
Post the results of the above.

  • Are there any known issues with Yosemite (iMac/Intel)?

I have seen reported issues with Wi-Fi, Interrnet connection, and ethernet.  Are these still valid concerns at this point - or has the OS been updated?

Those never were valid concerns. A very small percentage of users had issues but by and large most of us have had no problems whatsoever. However before upgrading you should always make a backup of your entire system in the event that you want to downgrade to your previous state. Make sure that you have at LEAST 4gb of ram and more is better. Also check to be sure that applications you depend on are compatible or upgradable for Yosemite.

  • HP Color LaserJet Problems with intel iMac

Can anyone give me advice on the following:-
When I try to print from my wife's new intel iMac 20" to our HP Color LaserJet 2550L, it doesn't work and print center gives me the following error message ... "The process "hppostprocessing" terminated unexpectedly on signal 5" .
The printer is connected directly to the iMac via USB. It's not on a network.
I ran the HP Color LaserJet installer from the original CD that came with the printer and when that didn't work I downloaded another (latest) Color LaserJet installer (dated 2004) from the HP website. Still getting the same error message from PrintCenter.
When I look at the HP installer log, it appears that the installer tried several times without success to install plugins into the PPD folder (HD->Library->Printers->PPD).
After trying installation and checking out my PPD folder (above) there is nothing in it.
This printer has been (still) working fine with our older 20inch iMac.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Same happened with my photosnart. Here is part of the email from HP
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand from your email that you are not able to print to your
photosmart 1218 printer from your new imac.
I believe you are correct when you mention the glitch between the new
    Intel processor in the iMac.
I have checked the Apple website and noted the pre-installed printer
drivers that ship with this operating system, do NOT include drivers for
the Photosmart 1218 printer. There are Gimp print drivers available for
the Photosmart P1000 printer. They may work, but provide only basic
printer functionality. (see the Apple document listed below).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303057#hpdrivers
I understand that our engineers are investigating the driver issue with
the Intel-based Macs, however, I cannot provide you with an expected
date of resolution. Your printer was manufactured in 2000, and the most
recent drivers are from Aug 2005. These drivers were created before the
    Intel based macs were available.

  • Adobe Acrobat InDesign Crashes with intel iMac

I have been having numerous InDesign crashes with no apparent pattern (sometimes it happens when I use key commands and other times it just shuts down). Any ideas/help? Thank you.

    Hi!
Not sure which version of InDesign you are using; and some applications
had issues when they were not quite ready for use in both Intel and PPC
Macintosh computers. An older version may cause a problem in a new Mac.
There may be several things not quite right; but there are several things
that you failed to mention (best stated in forum linked below) and those
could be: model, processor, RAM installed, OS X version (10.5.x, etc.)
[Something as basic as using Disk Utility (see folder in apps) and choose
it to run "repair disk permissions" may help; but it may be more involved.]
The question you have may be better and more accurately addressed in
    this Intel® iMac forum: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
Hopefully someone there more acquainted with these issues specific to
your hardware and the software you are attempting to use, has detailed ideas.
    Best regards!

  • Inherent ground Loop/audio hum issue with Intel Core 2 duo?

Has this ever been resolved? I can't find a definitive solution:
We're a recording studio and have put a 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo,
667Mhz running OSX 10.4.11 into service for a second workstation.
The audio I/O device is an Apogee Duet Firewire audio interface.
The Mac delivers a continuous 60 hz hum to the audio signal on the
    output.
Tried a ground lift which did not resolve it at all.
Audio is clean on the headphone-out of the interface btw.
Based on searches, discovered this is a known/reported issue with
a number of Mac models - tho i've not found specific fix for this
    particular model if any exists.
Apparently a Mac defect. Any suggestions?
We are a pro audio facility and things like cables and external devices
have been tested and ruled out. All definitely points to an internal
    issue w/ the machine.
There are numerous old threads about CHUD developer tools(?)
But, NO version I've downloaded (i think we installed/deinstalled
'em all) has offered this "Nap" processor-adjustment option that is talked
about as having "fixed" this hum issue for MDD G4 and Intel G5 model users.
Love to hear from anyone who can help on this...Hate to have to dump a nice
Imac for this. (Everything's perfectly quiet about it except the audio out -
    that kinda blows ; (

Hi, checking back in on this. OK, running a Macbook in place of the IMac with the same Apogee Duet firewire audio interface, the hum is not apparent on the output.
The iMac has a ground lift. All suggests that this is a known internal intel iMac problem and hope any fellow users could give me some idea of how to correct it before I must relegate this one from studio to office use. (we simply have to have clean hum-free audio monitoring...don't think that's asking too much eh?)
Again, there've been posts going back over the years about some form of developer tool adjustment that enables putting intel machine processors into a "Nap" mode.
Is there a version of the CHUD tools that will offer this option on this model?
    (intel 2.16 core duo - 10.4.11)
    Thanks for any other ideas
    Mike

  • Bootcamp issue with new iMac

Hi - I just purchased a new 21.5 inch iMac with Intel Core i7.  I used Bootcamp to partition a new drive, and I installed 32bit Windows 2007 Home Premium.  Everything worked without a problem, until I tried to install Bootcamp in the Windows environment.  It says that "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running".  I searched the forums for similar issues - I tried to re-download the Bootcamp update in OSX; I tried to use the command prompt to go right to the msi file, and nothing worked.  Unfortunately, I cannot connect to the internet through Windows until I instal all the drivers, so I am stuck.
Does anyone know if the Bootcamp drivers are supported on the new iMac i7?

Hi, ta know, they don't mention it here, but I'm wondering if 10.8 might not require 64 bit Win7?

  • Gameplay problems with Intel iMac

I have an Intel iMac with 2GB RAM and the 256MB graphics card. Despite this equipment spec, in playing Medal of Honor Allied Assault, I often experience some lag/framerate problems - in the "Day of the Tiger" opening mission, the game runs so slooooooowly that I become a standing target. What's up with this?!? Is it a Rosetta issue? Seems to me that with the hardware I have, it should run flawlessly, Rosetta or no Rosetta.

Yeah, just tried lowering the game settings so far that it looks like it's being played on an old 386 PC...and the @$% thing *STILL* freezes up solid in the first 30 seconds of the initial "Day of the Tiger" mission. The lag problems in the earlier missions were annoying, but not serious enough to necessitate lowering the graphics to cartoon level, or to disrupt frame rates to the point where the game is literally unplayable. I've already submitted a 2-star review for MOHAA on the Apple Store, so hopefully my experience will inform others...
Any recommendations re a WW2 themed 1st person shooter that actually WORKS on our machines?!?

  • Issues with intel ARD clients

Blithely installing ARD from disk to update the client on a new intel I seem to have hit a snag.
The machine is no longer accepting observe or control requests. Can see what's happening in the scanner window, chat and get reports etc but no control or observe.
    Tedious issue. Any ideas?

That may be your problem. The native ARD client for Intel (2.2.1, I believe) is, to the best of my knowledge, only availble on the install disks that come with the iMac and MacBook Pro. I think perhaps your installation overwrote the Intel-native ARD client with the PPC version, which is trying to run under Rosetta and failing to run correctly. I'd suggest reinstalling the ARD client from the iMac's install disks. I'm not sure if Pacifist, a utility to extract particular packages from the install disks, will work with the Intel Macs or not. If not, then you may have to reinstall Mac OS X.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
It really helps us help you when you identify your notebook with its complete product name or product number and include it in a post in you thread..
Remove the battery and look in the compartment where the battery was installed. You should see a printed part number and a product name (p/n). Post one or both of them (with all alphanumeric characters here).

Yep didn't work. Still get drops all the time, had to run a Cat 5E cable to my laptop from my modem, because I have Atheros Gigabyte Lan adaptor. Works Great. The Wireless still drops all the time. Has Microsoft let out the patch to fix this or is it coming in
