Component vs HDMI

Which is better? Component vs HDMI?

You would only need 1 HDMI cable as it will carry both video and audio.
HDMI cables can get pricey but I have read several articles stating that there is not alot of difference between more expensive cables and the less expensive brands. Now that changes when your talking about a cable more then 12 ft long or one that is to be concealed within a wall, but if  your dvr is going to be sitting close to the tv there are HDMI cables starting off at $8.99.
In my experience with HT I have also learned that an HDMI cable is recommended with tvs that are over 42" in order to take full advantage of the HD experience.

  • Component and hdmi issues

So I wanted to see if I could send the ATV signal from both component and hdmi outputs. Currently, I am using HDMI only to my Pioneer Pro 1120 at the 720 setting, but I wanted to send the signal to another tv (with component only) as well.
I could not output both signals, but when I went to output only the component signal, I could not get a signal (even on the Pioneer which auto adjusts the video resolution based on the input). Do I need to reboot when changing the AV output? I have tried the component on two different tv's. Do I have a bad component output on my ATV or am I missing a setting step somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Yes. I just had mine replaced today and it works nice!

  • Can i use both Component video and HDMI?

    Hi guys,
Im wondering if its possible to connect both Component video and HDMI on the ATV?
Its currently connected to HDMI on our main HD TV, however, the apartment we have has a strange setup in which you must send RF signals to a loop back in the main room to reach all other TV's.
We dont have the capital for either another flatscreen TV or a second Apple TV until next year - so currently we've got an older (see 2004) bulk of a CRT TV upstairs and my thought was i could route a signal to the RF loop back from the ATV and use my iphone remote to control what it plays to view upstairs.
For this id need a component to composite/rf convertor which ive found so sending the signal is no problem, but what would happen if i were to connect component cables as well as the HDMI, does the ATV output on both, or priortise the HDMI?

When both types of cable are connected to the tv at the same time, the HDMI connection will be on by default but the component is turned off... and what happens if the source to the HDMI cable is off - eg its plugged in but its got no where to send the signal, would it still not send to the component?.. You mean if the tv was off, same thing, HDMI would take precedence.
Are you sure about this, Winston? I have only 2 component (and 2 HDMI) inputs on my Panasonic HDTV. For this reason I invested in an Audio Authority Component Switcher (Model 1154A) a few years ago. When the TV device arrived I connected it directly to the HDTV via my HDMI-2 HDTV input and also connected the component video and optical audio to the switcher. I have no problem using the HDTV's input selector to switch back and forth between component and HDMI lines. While I admit I cannot split the screen between an HDMI input and anything else for simultaneous viewing, I can leave both lines plugged in and switch between the two lines. In addition, the activity light on the switcher indicates there is a signal present on the switcher even when I am watching the HDMI line. (Of course, this may simply be triggered by the switcher's optical audio signal since I normally watch the TV video via the HDMI line (with HDMI audio muted) and use the optical audio line to drive my receiver's AC3 decoder so I can enjoy 5.1 audio with my latest conversions.) Am, therefore, wondering if the OP may have the same capability and could then simply switch to a different input mode to "de-negotiate" his HDMI connection and allow access to whatever component device he needs as long as he doesn't need simultaneous viewing on both TVs.

  • Component video and HDMI at same time

Does anyone know if the AppleTV HDMI output and component video output are both active at the same time? (I want to send one to a plasma and the other to a projector, but I couldn't get anything out of the component output until I dosconnected the HDMI).

I think it would be too easy for us consumers if it worked as it should. I'd like to be able to set independent resolutions for Component vs HDMI AND have them both active, but it won't work like this. Bummer.
As to your problem, HDMI senses whether it is attached, and if it is attached, it takes precedence, disabling the component outputs. A simple albeit kludgy solution to your problem is to unplug the HDMI cable from the ATV when you want to use the Component outputs. (As your troubleshooting suggested... )

  • HDMI and Component Switching?

    Hello all.
I have an issue with my AppleTV that I'm unable to use HDMI or DVI (with a DVI convertor dongle). Usually with my Plasma TV I use a component cable, this worked fine, but now I've swapped my Plasma for a version with HDMI (and no component) and I can't get any video output using HDMI. I can't remember if there was a setting on the AppleTV to set the display type to composite or HDMI outputs. My AppleTV was upgraded to Take 2 before I changed TV sets.
    1) Is there a setting within the Apple TV menus to switch between component and HDMI?
    2) Is there a special key-press on the remote control to reset video settings? (as I don't have any way to view the video output at the moment)
    thanks in advance.

There's no way of switching between component and HDMI manually (HDMI will always take precedent over component), there is however a way to switch resolution which likely isn't but could be an issue I suppose.
You can cycle through video modes by holding down the 'menu' and '+' buttons on the remote for 6 seconds. (then to cycle use the '+' and '-')

  • Simultaneous HDMI & Component

Will the AppleTV simultaneously output both component and HDMI? I can test this, but with my system it's quite a hassle to get behind the system and attack the wiring. I'm hoping someone else has already tested this.
    Jim

    Hi,
Seems like it's not possible to use both outputs simultaneously. One must disconnect hdmi-cable to get anything out from component output. Sad but true.

  • HDMI Output to Component Cable setup

Will the new Apple TV work with a cable similar to a PlayStation that has a HDMI out cable that converts to a component/audio set. I have an older HD television that does not have HDMI inputs and only component input.

As you mentioned, the adapter cables won't work. There needs to be a conversion of digital (HDMI) signal to analog (component) which requires a device (converter box). (below are URLs that explain why these cables don't work - no endorsements implied)

With only the HDMI output the new ATV will likely enforce HDCP (digital copy protection) so some content may not output at all. The current ATV doesn't enforce HDCP per the discussion below.

  • New HDMI 37" Insignia With 5 Year Old Component Receiver

I purchased this TV yesterday at Best Buy and the salespeople said there was no way to adapt an older receiver (Sony - also purchased at Best Buy) with the newer HDMI TV. I was told I need to buy a new receiver.  There are multiple options online for HDMI to Component adapters.  WIll these work or is there a better way to connect the two together?  I had a hard time finding a modern receiver with a phonograph input and don't want to try and look for another.  Please let me know.  Thank you!

Pretty much any new receiver will still have analog inputs, my brand new Pioneer 820k has a plethora of them.
As for component to HDMI, I personally haven't seen any, but if you have multiple devices, that might end up costing as much as a new receiver anyway.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Apple TV on CRT TV (component to s-video)

    Hi all
newb here, so here's the story.
Apple iTunes film rentals have hit the UK, wohoo! The 160GB Apple TV is literally US$220 more in the UK. I'm off to NYC in 3 weeks so I'm going to get one there but I've we problem. My CRT Sony 32" TV (which I'm not replacing) doesn't have Component or HDMI inputs (which the Apple TV only gives ).
    I've figured 3 options:
    1. Buy a special converter box (found 3 so far), that takes Component and on the fly converts to S-video - all around £70/$140
    2. Buy a new AV Receiver/AMP that converts video signals on the fly (cheapest decent one is £400 Yamaha DSP-AX763, Denon and Onkyo do it too)
    3. Get a DVD Recorder that will accept Component and output s-video on the fly (£100+)
But all of these cost more than I want! Suddenly I remembered ye olde VHS VCRs! Does anyone know of a PAL VCR that accepts Component but will output s-video (or RGB Scart would be even better) please? Or any better suggestions.
Many thanks, and to the lovely forum facists: yes I've searched the forums before posting my question

    Sure man:

http://www.threedoubleyou.com/otherconverters.htm (2nd item down - this is the component to SCART RGB)
    http://www.howtoconvert.co.uk/howcomponent2rgb.htm (again SCART)
There's also an Australian company who make their own and a German one (from a well known company), but I can't remember either of them. Will post again if I find them.
But the best way and cheapest is the trick/hack that requires no hacking!:

  • Hdmi to compoent

I don't have hdmi ports on my tv, is it possible to go from hdmi to component. Because Have looked at some websites and they say its impossible. http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/component-to-hdmi-cable.htm

It is possible to go form HDMI to component, I am using a devise at my house. It takes the Digital HDMI in and converters it to analog video. I am using the item below its been working great for the last 3 months

  • Can I use the optical digital audio cable to connect INSTEAD of the hdmi?  My tv only has 2 hdmi ports, and they're both taken

Can I use the optical digital audio cable to connect INSTEAD of the hdmi?  My tv only has 2 hdmi ports, and they're both taken

I'm afraid that's very misleading and inaccurate.
Firstly an adapter won't work, it would need to be a converter and then if it's a compliant converter it won't let you watch HDCP protected content such as that from netflix or from the iTunes Store.
Secondly, whilst I'm not going to debate whether component or HDMI is better, component is certainly not better if it's been converted from an HDMI signal. You can't make anything better by simply converting it to another type of signal.

  • HDMI v. Firewire?

Recently saw through this site a Black Magic HDMI card that allows video capture from a HDMI equipped camcorder. Is the captured HDMI video so much better than Firewire capture that the card is worth purchasing? My camcorder has both HDMI and firewire ports.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The important thing is to read and understand what they are saying the benefits of capturing over HDMI are vs Firewire.
That being that capture over HDMI gives full frame resolution HD material as opposed to the squished HDV HD.
However this is only an advantage if you record into the computer using the card directly from the camera as a live source, not taped material. The card is a means of bypassing the cameras HDV conversion to tape process.
This card may be useful therefore if you have a broadcast source or deck that outputs full res HD over HDMI. It does not claim to improve the quality of "shot" material digitised from tape.
Its all there on the website.
As a sidenote there is no reason why as an owner of an HDV camera you could not connect to the HDMI card using a component to HDMI converter from the camera if codec preference is a requirement.

Does the TV have component inputs (Red, Blue, Green RCA jacks)?  You can still get HD that way and many say they can't tell the difference between component and HDMI (YMMV).  If you need cables, Verizon should provide them or you can get inexpensive ones at monoprice.com.

  • HDMI only output ( using HDMI as input )

    Hello,
I'm wondering if is possible to use the new MacMini for streaming.
If the HDMI port can be used as a video input then I can use it with Quicktime Broadcaster feeding from a video camera equiped with HDMI.
Is that possible or the HDMI port is output only?
    thanks in advance.

It's a pity.. Macs with HDMI input would be the second video revolution!

You can get an HDMI capture card for the Mac Pro, but obviously this will not fit in a Mac mini! See http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/
It is not clear whether this will work with sources using the ghastly HDCP content protection.
There is also the Elgato EyeTV HD which will record from a component (not HDMI) source and this would work with a Mac mini as it connects via USB. See http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/EyeTV-HD/product1.en.html
