Compositing stills and avi's to a DVD

I have still images from a show that someone created awhile ago but also 4 animations in AVI format.  The problem is the stills were moved to powerpoint to show on a TV but then the AVI's wouldn't run on the built in DVD play for the TV.  So they tried to use a laptop and it didn't work.
They want to redo it so we can pop the DVD in the TV and have it show all the stills and then play the 4 AVI's at the end of the still slide show.
What's the best way to accomplish this with CS5.
TIA!

Anthony, thank you very much - this works, though I thought I had tried your process previously without success. I've tried so many things who knows. I've had zero luck going with the Send to Compressor or Export Using Compressor Settings under the Share menu. I'm also finding Compressor 4 to be a real dog on my system even though I have a brand new quad core machine with 8G of RAM. Prior to receiving your post I did come up with a different work process. Using Export Movie from FCP X and then loading the result in Compressor 3 works flawlessly. Thanks again!

  • Convert & burn .avi & .wmv files to DVD?

As a relative Mac newbie, I would like to know how to convert .avi & .wmv files that are on my hard drive to DVD-burnable format. I generally use Toast Titanium 6.0.7 for all disc burning. An acquaintance suggested that I use iMovie for this purpose, but -- excuse my ignorance -- how exactly and in a simple way do I do it (go from having .avi and/or .wmv files on my hard drive to being able to actually and successfully burn them to DVD)?
Trying to add the files to Toast's "DVD Video" pre-DVD-burn setting just brings up black screen stills to represent the file, leading me to believe there is a problem, because other video files I've burned in the past have loaded into Toast with a video still frame grab before burning.
Windows seems to be able to perform this function easily, but could anyone help with simple, direct info on how to do it with Mac Tiger?..
Is this all a codec issue? If so, why should it be (on an otherwise tech-savvy and adaptable Apple OS) and how do I rectify it in a straightforward and simple manner?
I should add that I can view .avi files on my Mac by using VLC Media Player, and the .wmv files by using Windows Media Player for Mac, but I want to be able to convert these files to DVD-burnable format, so I can view them on a television set-top DVD player...
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Here's a couple more suggestions that I use .Not so elegent but they work.
    1. I use a VGA to TV converter box which plugs in to the VGA connection on the computer & gives S video or composite out & then plugin to the dv in from the camera. Then import to imovie for any editing & then burn away !Quick & dirty & it works eveytime. Of course you must have a vga connection at the back of your computer.
    2. On the PC side I use Cyberlink Power Director. This accepts .wmv files & will convert to other formats & also send to mini dv camera tape if I want to burn to standalone DVD burner.

  • Still and title transition problem

    Premier Pro 1.5
    Encore 1.5
    1H 52Min finished SD video
All video content SD DV, same settings, same camera, same master tapes
All stills 480 max or 720 max with a black video layer below
    All titles made in PP1.5
Many music tracks along  with native audio from the clips
Everything went great, all transitions, stills and titles look good in the timeline. All looks good in the single file avi export from PP1.5 as played with windows media.
As soon as I import the avi into Encore 1.5 to author the DVD, a few transitions between stills and/or titles get scrambled. It happens on about 3 random transitions out of maybe 50 - 100 of them. Sometimes a transition effect (fade) is involved, sometimes there is no effect. An example is 2 stills or titles adjacent to each other with the same duration. After the import to Encore the durations get hosed and the second still or title flashes for less than a second.
Any ideas? Other than this problem this long and involved video is flawless.

  • Convert WMV files to MPEG  and/or  get Quicktime plug-in for WMV and AVI

    Hi Apple experts,
I need to convert some WMV files to MPEG format or something that will play natively on a Mac in QuickTime or iTunes.
I was advised that the VLC app that will convert WMV to MPEG4?... but the page at the URL below indicates that this version of VLC is a player and does not say anything about converting WMV to MPEG...
    http://vlc-download.com/download-vlc/?gclid=COrY_NKghKYCFQN7gwoduQy4qA
I would like to convert WMV files to MPEG so they will play in QuickTime or in iTunes on a Mac by just double-clicking them... for family members with Macs like me.
I am working on a PC where I am right now, but I have Macs at home and at work. I am on a PC for the time being at a friends place and I've produced a few .wmv files in Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. (Sorry Steve, it's just for a test).
QuickTime will not play WMV files, nor AVI files, but it indicates that it can use a plug-in to do so, but the QuickTime webpage for plug-ins that it takes me to doesn't have any plug-ins for WMV or AVI format files.
Of course the Windows Media Player plays the WMV and AVI files, but is there also a way to make them play in QuickTime or iTunes besides converting them?
    Thanks so much,
    numetro

    Hi QTKirk,
I would like to be able to just give my family these files on a CD for high-res viewing on a computer, in addition to the DVDs that I have made for their TVs.
Since I don't control what they install on their computers, they don't necessarily have Flip4Mac on their Macs like I do... I just want them to be able to play MPEGs from a file on a CD or on their hard drives by simply double-clicking them.
After working with the recommended VLC player that also allegedly converts WMV files to MPEGs, for 8 hours, I have a result with the 7th attempt that mimics the worst kind of modern digital art that I've ever seen... I wish I could plug in the screenshot of the MPEG video that VLC produced... completely useless garbage.
Are there any other suggestions for a converter that simply handles converting WMV to any kind of MPEG file?
FFE was going to be the one that I tried until I read a post about VLC... that turned out to be a waste of 8 hours of sleepless time.

  • Can I mimic a 'slide show' of stills and videos with this technique

I want to be able to mimic an old fashioned slide show on a Blu-ray disk, except that each 'slide' – I'll call them items – could be a true still, or a still with pan/zoom, or even a short video. Whatever a particular item is, I want to click a button and the show advances to the next item. If the next item is a video, the video pauses on the last frame when it is finished.
Just like the old magazine full of slides, imagine a folder full of items – some may be stills, some videos. After importing into Encore, setting up the navigation and menus, and then burning to Blu-ray, I want to be able to play them in sequence at the press of the Enter button.
I'm pretty much a novice with Encore, and to save spending more time reading the manual, I thought I'd ask if I can mimic a slide show in Encore with the technique described below. I got the idea from page 152 of the PDF manual:
The buttons on a menu are the primary navigation tool for the viewer. They control how the viewer steps through the project. Each button in a menu must lead to another menu, a timeline, a chapter, a playlist, a chapter playlist, or a slide show.
My limited experience with Encore is to set up a series of videos on a single timeline, and generate one menu with a "Start" button on it. When the Blu-ray starts up, the Start screen appears and stays there until I press Enter. Works well.
A slide show of stills using buttons only
So I thought: to generate my old-fashioned slide show (ignore videos for the moment), I would use the buttons themselves as the stills, taking my queue from the quote above: "Each button in a menu must lead to another menu…". My slide show would consist of jumping from one menu to the next. This leads to my first question:
Q1: Is it possible for a menu to have a full-screen button, call it the Image Button, that is actually the still image that is desired to be shown? So the viewer sees the Image Button, thinks it's the image (which it is), but it is actually a button. When the viewer presses Enter, the button activates and goes to the next menu which also happens to be the next full-screen image. The viewer is jumping from Image Button to Image Button, with the buttons filling the screen and being the actual images.
    A slide show including videos
To include a video in the slide show, the destination when Enter is pressed would be a timeline with the appropriate video. At the end of this video, the navigation would lead to a menu which has an Image Button of the last frame of the video. The effect is that the video is paused on the last frame, waiting for the user to hit Enter to advance to the next item (still or video).
If there is an easier way to mimic a slide show of stills and videos, please let me know.

Stan – I posted 3 years ago in the Keynote Forums (I'm on Mac) about this sort of thing, knowing that eventually I would want to do it. The answer came back then that Keynote might have problems. So I've recently posted again about Keynote, but no responses as yet.
I expected problems with Encore and welcome some of them. Overcoming problems is the best way to become intimately involved with software.
I'm glad you asked why I don't just use Powerpoint (or Keynote in my case). Now's my chance to clarify my thoughts:
Macs do not upscale very well. Sometimes I may want to show part of a DVD. I've tested playing a DVD on my iMac versus on a Oppo BDP93, fed to a BenQ W7000 projector throwing a 3 metre image. There is an obvious difference in image quality because the Oppo, being hardware based, can interpolate in real time as it scales from 576p (PAL) to 1080P. DVD Player on my iMac simply magnifies the image, resulting in obvious pixellation.
Dissolves and complex effects in Premier challenge any software based h.264 player. I don't like to see decoding artifacts, for example, during a dissolve while a part of the image is also reducing in size, spinning, and disappearing into the distance. An extreme example, but an effect I used once. From my reading of blu-ray player reviews – and from my limited testing – all blu-ray players can easily handle the highest bit rates from a blu-ray disk.
I don't have a laptop so I'd have to buy one. I'd rather spend the money on a dedicated player if that route turns out to be suitable.
I don't trust computers for a presentation. Too unreliable. When I was showing multiscreen audio visuals in the 1980s (4-6 projectors), I always had a backup Tascam 4-track with me, back up soundtrack on tape, back up amp, and a backup slide projector. Even had a backup amp in the car. Speakers, well, if one failed I had two there anyway. With digital, to feel comfortable, I'd have to buy a second laptop. A good quality, backup Blu-ray player can be had for $100. And yes, I do have a backup W7000. I don't trust digital projectors either.
Running a presentation from a laptop always looks amateurish to me. Someone hunched over a tiny screen, fooling around with Windows or OSX. And usually it's all mirrored on the big screen for everyone to see. I'm never impressed. I want to replicate a cinema experience as closely as possible. Darkness, the audience hushed, and up comes the first image.
Any suggestions about automatically linking a whole heap of menus?

  • Reduced quality of .vob and avi files

    Hi Guys
    I need some help please.
I am working on a trail version of adobe elements 10 on a new macbook pro lion.
    No problem installing application.
When I import video either in vob from dvd or avi format, the quality of the video is reduced tremendously, there are no white black lines, no jumping, just low quality.
On the bottom right hand side, the application tells me that it is doing something called conforming.
When I play the same video in vlc on the mac, or on my pc, the video runs fine with no problems and the picture is crystal clear.
I tried the things suggested in support:
    1. Rendering
    2. Checked the fps are the same as the original video ie 25 fps
    3. Tried using application to convert vob file to mp4 of all different levels of quality using external program (wondershare video converter ultimate for mac)
Elements looks like a great program, the closest to the magix I used to run on my pc, but the problem at the moment is that the quality is reduced.
    Is there a codec problem?
The vob and avi files are not recognized by quicktime.
    Please let me know asap
    Thanks
    Simon

Much has to do with which project settings you've selected in Premiere Elements when you set up your project. (For DVD video, you should be using the Hard Disk Camcorder/standard definition settings for your project.) You also should not mix DVD and AVI footage in a project. They interlace very differently and this can cause problems in your output.
Much also depends on where your AVIs are coming from. Unless your AVIs are from a miniDV camcorder, captured over a FireWire connection, you are likely working with a codec that is not fully compatible with the program. Where did these AVIs come from?
Conforming is an important part of the process of the program rendering non-workflow formats (such as DVD VOB files) into editable workflow formats. Allow the program the fully conform your DVD video and use the proper project presets and you should get results that are virtually identical to the original footage.
Parts 1 and 2 of my free 8 part Basic Training tutorials at Premiere Elements support site Muvipix.com will help  you understand how and why project set-up and proper footage formats are so important.

  • RGB, Composite, Firewire and S-video capture device for FCP

    Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone could suggest some of the better capture cards that support RGB composite, firewire and s-video inputs that will work with FCP.
The set up is on Mac Pro and the device needs to be as reliable and noise free as possible as it will be used for the capturing of video for evidence in court cases.
Any help is this area would be very grateful,
    Regards,
    Martin.

    Hello,
I have no experience with the AJA product line but I know that many of the folks here have used them. They make a good line of cards that will do what you are asking for. They don't have firewire on the cards, but the computer you are using should have one I would assume.
Since you said 'S-Video' my thoughts are that you are only using SD? If that is going to be the case for a long time then look at this card:
    http://www.aja.com/products/kona/kona-lse-ls.php
It has composite and S-Video inputs. IF there is the chance that you are going to be doing HD and IF it is still tape based, then look at one of the higher models. But again, that is if you are going to be upgrading to HD sometime soon.
    Hope this helps.

    Nonsense.
Apple Compressor has been doing wmf exports for a decade. I have the Quicktime export components from Telestream and they appear as presets in Compressor. They should be available in Media Encoder or they should be importable. Adove apparently refuses to see them. Still trying to figure that out.

    Feature support levels
There are three tiers or levels, from lowest to highest requirements, of support:
    Level 1: For OpenGL SwapBuffer:
This level simply requires a GPU that can do OpenGL 1.5, or greater, with Shader Model 3.0, or greater. Most ATI and NVIDIA cards, and the Intel HD Graphics 3000 chipset (available in the MacBook Air, Mac Mini, various Windows machines, etc.) and 4000 (Windows only at this time) are supported. If your GPU does not support these requirements, software OS blitting like CS5.5 occurs, and there are improvements for software blitting in After Effects CS6, as well.
Level 2: For Fast Draft previews, Hardware BlitPipe, and Cartoon GPU acceleration:
Includes Level 1 features. This level requires OpenGL 2.0, or greater (with Shader Model 4.0, or greater, on Windows), and 256 MB, or greater, of texture memory. Most ATI and NVIDIA cards released in the past five years, plus the Intel HD Graphics 3000/4000, support this level.
If your GPU does not support these requirements, these features will be disabled:
    Fast Draft mode
The "Hardware Accelerate Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels" preference.
The Cartoon effect's "Use OpenGL When Available" option (the Cartoon effect then runs on the CPU).
Level 3: For Ray-traced 3D rendering on the GPU:
Includes Level 1 & 2 features (for machines with attached monitors). This level requires a supported NVIDIA GPU and 512 MB, or greater, of texture memory. For a current list of supported GPUs, see the Adobe website.

Well, you should be concerned that it isn't available  - there is still some configuration issue with your graphics card - but you can live without it most of the time.

  • Import process hangs indefinately on JPG and AVI files

    Hi,
I'm seeing a similar issue to some of the other posts.
My configuration is Windows 7 x64, 4GB RAM and a Core i7. All the photos I want imported have been moved to the C drive.
When I try to import a folder with a couple of sub-folders containing a total of about 3000 JPG and AVI files (from a CANON 450D and Fuji Finepix 200EX), the import process hangs inderfinately, and I need to kill the process.
Only around 500 photos get imported.
One strange thing is that I am only able to preview a couple of the files in the preview grid. However when selecting to view a single file instead of the grid view I am able to view the file in question.
I have tried to import one file at a time (for a couple of the ones that fail that is) but the import process still hangs, even though I am able to view the file itself before import.
Have also tried only JPG files, same result.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

What happens if you try to copy these files to your iMac first? Your problem may not be that applications quit when opening but rather you're having problems simply accessing the disk.
If your external disk was formatted as NTFS by your Windows machine then your Mac will not be able to write back to the disk. Your applications may be attempting to save temporary or permanent files back to the disk. Verify this by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". Click the "More Info..." button. Under the Hardware section on the left, look for your drive. It's probably under ATA. Select your drive and look at the "File System". If it is formatted as NTFS, you can copy the files to your iMac, and use the Disk Utility to reformat the drive to a Mac or MS-DOS format.
This could also be a symptom of disk corruption. You can begin troubleshooting by using the Disk Utility found in /Applications/Utilities to verify/repair your disk. If Disk Utility finds problems but is unable to fix them, you can purchase third party tools such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to attempt to repair your disk.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Text looks horrible and blocky when imported into DVD SP

Why is it that all my text looks terrible when I import it from Photoshop into DVD Studio Pro for a still menu? The font size is 20pt, and the text type is Franklin Gothic, a sans serif Helvetica variation that is extremely simple and basic. Why does it look so bad? Is it the layers? The field dominance? The pixel aspect ratio? I've asked around and many people simply say "dvd studio pro does that sometimes." What? That's not seriously the bottom line is it? What if I don't want to redesign my whole menu?
I posted an example of how the text looks...

Thanks for any help you could give me!

Try this one...there isn't a solution, it is a confirmed bug in the software. Check out the thread above, I included an e-mail address and issue i.d. so you can write a message letting them know that I'm not the only one having this problem...
The same issue affects the normal way of creating slideshows as well as still menus. The workaround is to create a menu that loops at around :30. However, at the loop point the text will go jagged for a second while it loops back to the beginning. So, it's not a perfect workaround.

  • Exporting audio and video together for Mpeg2 dvd

Hi, I'm trying to export audio and video together for Mpeg2 dvd.. I changed  multiplexing to DVD but is still exporting seperately is there something im missing? thanksa

To add, with Multiplexing set to NONE, check what the Audio format is set to. If "PCM", this is an uncompressed .wav file and will result in export of .m2v video and .wav audio (I think Mac uses .aif) and use "Import as Timeline" in Encore for both clips at once. Encore will automatically transcode the audio to Dolby AC-3, do NOT mess with settings in Encore, defaults are correct. If you have CS6, then in AME audio settings, there is an option for Dolby and you can use that to create the .ac3 audio and then Encore does NOT do any transcoding to audio or video. Note that older versions will also show "Dolby" but that is a free trial of a surround encoder, not the same. You just want the stereo option available in CS6, or use PCM option is fine

  • OSX cant open *some* .dmg and .avi files, other open fine

    Hi,
Ive encountered a problem with opening files on my new iMac.
The problem is some .DMG files and .AVI files are not able to be opened, which have previously been fine. Where as some where fine, and still are. The problem files have white icons and are grey'ed out. They cannot be renamed, deleted and moved. These files have previously been fine, I downloaded them, installed or watched them, then stored them on my portable hard drive. They have just suddenly became un-usable.
Its weird how 90% of the AVI and DMG files I have open fine, but some have just suddenly became un-usable. If I go to delete the files, it states they are being used by another application. If I go to change the default opening program from VLC to Quick Time it states I don't have the correct privileges.
    Whats going on here?

Yeah I've done that many times. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Don't know what to do now. The problem files seem to be files that I have transferred to the portable hdd since I've had my iMac.
The drive is formatted in NTFS but I followed a tutorial on how to get read and write access. Could it be that osx can't write the files to the drive correctly? I'm not sure. It's weird because the files work perfect for a day or two after copying, but then become un-usable.
