Compound clips change order of timeline

When I open a compound clip that is in my timeline, the order of the tomeline changes.
I have trashed the preferences. This has been a problem since 10.0.3 and isn't any different in 10.0.6.
how can I actually talk to someone about this andseveral related problems that I have been having IN FCPX?

Am I missing something? I don't see that button at the base of my bins.

  • Is there a way to see all my compound clips created on the timeline, in the browser as an accessible thumbnail list....?

I am facing a problem that
due to big footage I first extracted the seemingly fine clips in chunks in one timeline in various layers which is still enormous for my RAM
now I have to take out smaller and more appropriate bits from this timeline
I have opened another timeline where I just copy paste the best shots from my previous enormous timeline and this works fine due to less media for 6gb RAM mac pro
but it is really tedious to go back and forth to copy paste
it would be so wonderful if I could extract those bits from the clips just like we do with any other new footage from the browser window with all the clips visible
I think one way can be to export these compound clips seperately and import them as events into the browser but that would be a generation loss
is there any other way.....? to view these compound clips infront of my eyes all at once or keeping all that footage on the timeline besides the finalising layer is the only option...?
I am facing this rare problem because I'm editing a music video and no shot is more than 2 seconds and that too from several groups of footage that has to be mixed.....so all the data has to be visible to decide if a bit of guitar piece would look good here or drums or close up or long shot.....so everything has to be seen....can you suggest me a smarter workaround please ?

    Thank you.Ok say for e.g.
500 video files imported in fcpx
800 clips extracted from these obviously on the timeline and joined/compounded according to their content in say 15 layers according to 15 instruments used ,so now just to see the entire usable footage ....
now one 7 minute song sequence has to be made where bits would be simultaneously taken from these 15 layers as all instruments are playing simultaneously
these shots are not more than 2 secs each according to the beat........
when I try to work with these 15 layers as well as the Final primary layer that I'm making in the same timeline my fcpx becomes slow
but when I drag individual layer to individual timelines it is fine so that is the only option
but now for every 2 second bit I have to go back to the 15 layered timeline and find one single suitable shot
So I was wondering is there a way to be able to see these layers and clips on the timeline in the browser in a systematic fashion like the way we get with keywords  ?
and keywords can only be used in the imported clips already in the browser ,and not after we drag it on the timeline.....
Till now I think exporting and importing back is the only option ...but is there another work around ?

  • Compound Clip changes edit

    Hey gang,
When I make a compound clip out of a 1-minute sequence, it seems to change the edit-- specifically, one of my cross dissolves now overlaps onto another, and it pushes everything aside, adding an extra 7 seconds to the total duration.
Anybody else experience this? Any ideas on how to solve it?
    Thanks!

  • Compound Clips - possible to move from timeline to event?

    Hi,
I know that I can create compound clips in the timeline or the events browser.
But is it possible to MOVE a compound clip created in the timeline to an event?
This would be very useful for syncing clips in the timeline first and moving them to the events browser later.
    Thanks!

Create an empty Compound Clip in the Browser, and then copy and paste the relevant clips from the timeline into that CC (open the CC in the timeline first).

  • Compound clip re-rendering

Is it just me or are compound clips the very devil when it comes to rendering?
You put a bunch of clips together in a compound clip for convenience, then maybe you need to go in there and edit an effect on one of the internal clips.  Bam, the entire compound clip needs to re-render, not just the single clip you edited.  Not only that, but now having waited for it to render to check the result and you go back up to the main project and it decides it also needs to re-render the whole compound clip in the main timeline again.  Ridiculous.
This is so inefficient that I'm seriously questioning the validity of using compound clips, or maybe it's a bug, after all it shouldn't be that hard for it to only render the changed section, marking the frame ranges as dirty, either within the clip itself or in the main timeline rather than having to re-render everything twice.  Gotta be a bug right?
...The real trouble being that Apple seem to lack any real support mechanism for reporting bugs instead apparently wanting to depend upon a forum that they don't participate in

If I understand you correctly, the answer is no. Changes to the content of the compound master like applying an effect will go through the project, but changes in duration of the compound don't. If you lengthen the compound, the project doesn't get longer. If you shorten the compound, there'll be black in the project.

  • How to reverse clip order in timeline?

So I have a pretty lengthy project, and I want to take all the clips I have, and essentially just play them backwards. As in, I have ex: Clip A, Clip B, Clip C, Clip D, Clip E. And I want to reverse the entire order so it plays: Clip E, Clip D, Clip C, Clip B, Clip A. Is there a quick way to reverse the order of all the clips, instead of doing it one by one, which is extremely time consuming?

If I understand correctly, you want to reverse the order of the clips but not reverse the clips themselves.
There is a way to achieve what you want, in very few steps.
    1) Select all the clips (click anywhere in the timeline, and hit Cmd-A for "select all").
    Go to Modify->Retime->Reverse Clip.
[at the moment, you'll still have all the clips in the original position, but playing in reverse]
    2) Select all the clips and press Option-G (or File->New Compound Clip). You will be asked to name this compound clip. Now select this compound clip and do a new Modify->Retime->Reverse Clip.
[now you have the order of the clips inside the compound reversed, and, since they had been reversed to begin with, they will now be playing forward].
    3) If desired, you can "uncompound" ("break apart clip items") the compound clip, or leave it as is.
I am curious, though: why would you want to reverse the order of the clips in a "long" story? It does not seem to make much sense, storytelling-wise.

  • Compound clips become an empty white timeline. Hm?

After syncing multiple clips, matching video with external audio, I coumpouned the synced items. However, after moving in and out of the compounds, all my editing seems to have been erased. It seems locked into this white abyss. Any ideas? Thanks y'all.

I've had a (perhaps) related problem. After changing the speed of a compound clip, that clip outputs to black. It does appear normally in the timeline with the speed changed.
The Compound Clip feature is terrific, but there are bugs and it's prudent to check your output every time. I just deleted and started over. I did quit and restart FCPX to no avail.
Maybe that's fixed in 10.01, but I can't even do that!

  • Editing clips = changed timeline?

    Hello all!
I am new to Premier Elements (11), so please excuse the newbie question. I'll appreciate whatever help you can give!
I'm in the process of editing a short commercial that has many clips with several layers. When I edit a clip to make it longer or shorter, all of the following clips move down the timeline. For example, if I extend the length of one clip by 00:00:00:10, then all of the following clips move up by the same amount. Editing one clip moves all of my other clips around and changes the whole video!
Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance!

    Hi ATR!
Thanks for your reply. I read through the article, and I'm not sure that it addressed the issue. Let me try explaining again with some screen shots.
Here's what the timeline looks like before I edit a clip:
And after I decrease the time of the toes2-2.jpg clip on the left:
The desired result would have been for the middle column of clips (gas tank 2.jpg) to stay where it was (ahead of the :24 mark) instead of rippling down to below the :24 mark.
Does this help clarify the problem? Did I miss anything in the article that could help with this?
    Thanks a ton!

I need to revert my timeline back to where it was before it was saved. I made a compound clip and then trimmed it and exported it and then shut down fcp. So, when I opened it back up there was only the compound clip. Can someone help me and tell me how to revert back it back to the last time before it was saved? HELP??

Select the compound clip and do Clip->Break Apart Clip Items (or Cmd-Shift-G).

  • Cannot change compound clip settings from 1080P 60fps to 1080i 25fps

Hi. I created a compound clip, which for some reason ended up with settings of 1080P 60fps (probably because I added a music track first before any video and just used the automatic settings). After editing a whole sequence and exporting a master file, I realized the settings had been wrong. All my footage is 1080i 25fps.
Only thing is when I tried to change the compound clip settings, I only had other progressive options available. I could not change it to 1080i.
I had to create a brand new Compound Clip with 1080i 25 and paste the clips from the original CC into the new CC. Only thing was a music track was now out of sync with the video (presumably because the fps value in the original CC did not match the footage). I had to retime the audio track to around 99% speed to fit to the video clips again!
Why could I not change the CC settings directly?
    Thanks

The compound clip is acting like a project. You can never change the timebase of project once there's media in it. You should copy and paste into a new compound clip if you can.

  • Compound clips showing as missing events

I started a project on Macpro tower, then copied that project with all it's events and media to a portable hard drive to work on it with my Macbook Pro.  I did not import anything into the event for this project while working on the Macbook, but I did create some compound clips.  After working on the Macbook, plugged the portable drive into my Macpro tower and copied the project back to the hard drive in the Mac Pro.  I performed the copy via drag and drop withinn Final Cut Pro X. I then began to work on the project.  I did not re-copy the events and clips back to the Mac Pro tower, because they are all there already.
Now, I find that when I eject the portable drive from the Mac Pro tower, the compound clips show up as a missing event, even though the clips within those compound clips are in the current project.  I've tried to re-link the media, but there doesn't seem to be a way to re-link the compound clip.  I could just trash the new project, but I've done some work on it that I don't want to lose.  Any help would be appreciated.

now I know to re-import everything back even if nothing has really changed.
I am glad you got it working. But something did change. You created compound clips in the Event Library when you added them to your project on the MBPro. When you opened the project on your tower there were no compound clips in the event library without the portable drive connected. Once you copied the new events onto the tower event library FCP was happy and all you need to do is replace the old compounds in the timeline with the new ones.

  • Is it possible to move/resize individual objects in Compound Clipping Path in Illustrator?

    Hi,
I have created a Compound Clipping Path in Adobe Illustrator, and wonder if there is a way of moving/resizing individual objects in this path that create the mask? At the moment when I try to change just one object it changes them all.
Essentially I am try to make fine adjustments to the mask.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Nick

Adobe updated masks in CS4, which has made to editing inidividual contents within masks more difficult, especially more complex masks (eg: nested)
When you select a mask now you select the mask and the contents. 5 ways to help you select the elements within the mask:
To get into the contents to edit them use the "Edit Contents" button (the 2nd one in the top left).
Flip down your layers palette triangles, to try and make selections there
Individually select items with the hollow arrow tool or group select tool, and hide them, then unhide to have the sum of the elements selected.
Save back to CS3 and work in CS3
Isolation Mode (though that mode is preferred disabled by many users)
Be careful as if you ever release a mask, this can entirely mess up your layeringorder on occasion, and undo won't help. Save before releasing a mask, sometimes you can undo, sometimes undo will not be abel to reconstruct you layer order.

  • Compound clip imported into project not showing up in the event browser

I have learnt that when one imports any clip into the project from anywhere else other than its associated event folder, the new clip also gets automatically added into the event folder. I have seen this occur when I had imported audio from the music browser onto my timeline directly.
Today I happened to place a compound clip [a common template which I use for introduction to the video] onto the beginning of a project which I have started recently. I broke the compound clip apart and made the necessary edits. What puzzles me is that this compound clip has an audio clip and this clip was not being shown in the event browser. Is this normal?
Ps. I have very recently updated my FCPX from version 2 to 5.

Let me explain the matter in a different way...
I have made a compound clip of the intitial generator clip, titles and music clip which I had used for my first project. The intention to do so being that I could reuse the same for my future projects as well. I placed this compound clip in a new project which I named as templates.
When I had started upon a new project a few days ago, I copied and pasted this compound clip from the 'templates project' and added it to the beginning of the timeline of the new project.
Now, for purposes of editing the titles, I broke apart the compound clip and changed the text of the titles. Also, when I had ungrouped the compound clip, there did appear the music clip below the timeline. I know that clips imported from the generator browser and the titles that are added to the project do not show up in the events browser, but should not the audio clip make its appearance in the event browser? I know that when we add an audio from the music browser, this audio clip will be automatically shown in the event browser.
My question therefore is this: is an audio track that gets added to the timeline of a project via a compound clip that has been added and ungrouped on the timeline an exception to the rule?
Hope I have made myself clear.

  • Compound Clip Match Bug

This is a huge problem with Compund Clips in FCPX.
If there are 2 clips from 2 different levels, as in one from the main timeline and the other being a connected clip and if the connnected clip starts before the main clip in the timeline, and if you compound them, do all the editing, and break them apart, the connected clip is now shifted to where the compound clip actually starts.
Here is an example I found on youtube : http://youtu.be/raCZ_g2puao

The problem actually occurs the moment you make a compound clip, not when you break it apart.
If I understood correctly, you are trying to make a compound from selected clips like this:
This is a problem because the compound clip to be built will have to sit in the primary storyline. The first part (where the title is above the previous, non-compounded clip) will come up with the title over a black background, and all the compound  clip will be shifted right. The way to do this properly is to first lift the whole thing from the primary storyline. Select the clip which is in the primary and Cmd-Opt-Up Arrow to lift it:
Now the two clips that will become the compound clip are both connected to a gap clip in the primary storyline.
You can create the compound and all is (almost) well:
I say almost because the connection point ended up on the previous clip, not the gap. Depending on what you want to do, this may or may not matter. But you can easily change the connection point: Cmd-Option-click to set a new connection.

  • Question on compound clips

The new behavior of compound clips starting in 10.0.6 does not work for me as I thought I understood it. I added a still clip to the timeline and attached a second still clip to it. I then created a compound clip which was fine. I then added a depth of field blur mask effect to the compound clip in the timeline. The compound clip in the event brouser did not change. I added another instance of the compound clip from the brouser to the timeline and it was the original ie no blur. I then added an aged paper effect to the second instance of the compound clip and the first one did not update to reflect that effect. Again the brouser compound clip remained the original. Do I totally not understand what is supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong? I do see the reference new parent clip in the clip menu when I select the compound clip in the timeline but have not tried it.

Both should change, as they are locked together, unless you use the Create New Parent command, then you get a duplicate of the original CC.
First, try quitting and relaunching FCP X, see of that helps.
If not, get the free "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com) and use it to quickly and safely trash FCP X's pref files.  See if that helps.
If that doesn't help, move the Final Cut Pro app from the Applications folder to the Trash (your Projects and Events will be safe, don't worry).  Then launch the App Store, to the Purchases section, click "Install" to the right of Final Cut Pro X.  The reinstall make fix it.
But it should indeed work as you expect it to.
