Compound paths & graphic style problem (map related)

Hi all,
Been banging my head against a wal with this all morning. I'm hoping one of you can help.
I need to replace portions of a map - it' slots and lots of shapes representing buildings.The original file has shapes made of compound paths (see illustration below). That's great, because the center needs to be knocked out (there are some items underneath that occasionally show through).  I thought I'd try to create a graphic style to replicate the look as closelty as possible, but I cannot get a fill to act as a knockout - so I have the basic shape and effect that I want, but with a colored center instead of a knocked-out one. This is a problem becuase I'll be changing dozens of shapes and I don't want to have to recreate the look on each shape manually.
Here's a pic to help clarify. The original is on the left, my attempted recreation is on the right. Help!

First, thansk so much for the help! I'm soooo close, but I keep doing something wrong. Let me run through my steps to see if you can spot where I'm falling down:
Draw my rotated box (I Object> Compound Path > Make converted it to a compound path becuase I assuemd I'd need that when applying a knockout. I may be wrong there).:
Fill with white, copy the fill and fill with brown:
Apply a Transform effect to the 2nd fill (I need the numbers to be absolute, not scale, becuase I need to apply thsi to a variety of shapes but achieve a uniform look):
I then go to the Opacity on that second layer and check Knockout:
But when I drop the Opacity down to 0% (with knockout checked) that entire fill layer just goes transparent:
And if I apply the Knowckout - Opacity settings to the main opacity at teh bottom, the whole thing goes blank:
Incidentally, here's the shape I'm trying to replicate (I know my attempt doesn't reproduce the connected lower left and upper right rounded corners):
And here's a small chunk of the map. I'll be changing dozens of these shapes and want to apply that consistent look to them without doing each one manually.
G'ah! It's driving me nuts! What am I doing wrong?

  • Punch hole without compound path?

    I have a shape where I then need to punch a hole in that shape. If I do that it then creates a compound path.
    The problem is I am want to use the Area Type Tool to then paste some text within the shape - but it won't allow me to do that as you can't do that on a compound shape.
    But what I would like to do is make the text flow in and around the shape I've created. So as you can see below I need to remove the triangle in the center so the text flows around to form the letter A.
    Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

    greencode,
    You could cheat and create two shapes, the upper one ending at the bottom of the counter (the hole) i the A (You may have to adjust exactly where you cut between the two simple closed paths) and let the Type flow from one to the other. I am still with 10, so I am unable to describe exactly how to do the latter. Hopefully, someone else will give the instructions.

    Hello Ashish,
                     There must be some problem with IGS server. So check whether your IGS server is configure properly or not.
    Follow these steps:
    1. Check the path first
      Local Drive : \ usr \ SAP \ J2E \ JC01 \ J2EE \ admin
    2. Connect to SAP J2EE Engine
    3.Open the Visual Administrator Window, In Global Configuration page ,go to
           CONFIGURATION ADAPTER  -> WEBDYNPRO -> sap.com - > tcwddispwda -> propertysheet.default
    4. Switch to edit mode
    5.Change property entry , http://<server name: port number>
    6.Exit the visual Administrator window
    7.Restart J2EE Engine.

  • Copying a path creates a duplicate graphic style

    When copying a path by using the the menu commands, if there is any graphic style associated with that path, a duplicate graphic style will be made.  We deal with copying hundreds of lines.  As a result, we are left with hundreds of graphics styles that are duplicates.  This slows the program down by a significant amount.  Is there any fix to this?  We do use the ALT shortcut when we can, which does not create duplicate graphic styles. But, there are some instances where this cannot be used.

    I'm going to take a guess here - if you create a brand new document and do not paste anything into it, but create a path, apply a Graphic Style, then copy and paste that path, you do not see this problem right?
    If that is correct, then my guess is that you frequently work with files where some of the content was created in a much older version of Illustrator and you should refer to this knowledge base article to see if it can help: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408008.html

  • Map tags to style problem.

    Hello!
    I have a problem with indesign that i cannot understand. On the picture below, you can see my structure. PARAGRAPH is the tag of the text frame. Inside the text frame i have tagged the text. The things that should be paragraph style 1 (bröd) is tagged "PARAGRAPH1". The things that should be  paragraph style 2 (bröd_start) is tagged "PARAGRAPH2".
    I use map tags to style to map the different tags to a specific style. It looks like this:
    When I run the cursor over the text I can see the tags changing to the correct one in the tags panel. But the paragraph style is always "Bröd". It seems as if the tags to style is not applied!
    The reason that I want to to this is so I can manage first lines better. I map the first word of a "new" line to "Bröd_Start" so that the first line is aligned flush left. Like this:
    Anyone has any ideas why this is not working like it should?!
    Tank you!
    Regards,
    Lukas

    Hi,
    Thanks for sharing the document. I tried with your file and scrolling is working fine. I could choose and select the styles also.
    Did the bug happen after importing XML or before as well?
    Do you have other documents open while you are working on this document?
    Did you try cleaning your preferences and cache? If not, you can give this a try and let me know if the problem still remains.

  • Compound path - what's the problem?

    I occasionally encounter compound path voodoo -2 simple shapes will not form a compound path. I have 2 closed paths that are not grouped, with the small path being completely surrounded by the larger. Nothing I do will create a compound. I have swapped items for back/front order. Pasted separately into a new file. Nothing works. If I create NEW objects, no problem. This occurs occasionally in illustrator -in an area that NEVER FAILED in previous versions (I go back to Illustrator v.1) Can't understand how this simple function can fail. I suspect it has something to do with Expanded elements, but have never fully understood that function perhaps. File attached.
    Also, where is the User Guide? F1 or Illustrator Help directs me to a searchable online database -when all I want is the user guide PDF. THis has also become unnecessarily complex. Whatever happened to intuitive interface?
    thanks.
    OS 10.5.7 Illustrator CX4

    Unfortunately, queued files can take days to be released and downloadable sometimes.
    If I had to guess, I'd say some factors which prevent compounding:
    Open paths
    Custom appearance applied to an object
    Trying to "compound" groups (note groups are automatically created if you use the pathfinder commands)
    Object stacking
    Trying to "compound" a compound shape
    These are jsut a few things and I realize you stated you checked a few of them.
    As for the help and no manuals... well.. Adobe seems to be saving money. I don't necessarily like it either. I remember getting a nicely printed and bound manual with the software when it was half it's current price.

  • Compound path and live fill problem

    Hello experts
    I really hope you can help me out with this one. I'm all new to Illustrator and have tried to find the answer to my question but without luck, so you are my last way out
    I'm currently working on a logo of a football which I have drawn with the line segment tool. A football is made of pentagons and hexagons, and I want all the pentagons to have a color fill. For that I have used the live paint bucket. But if I apply an effect such as a gradient it is applied to each segment as many seperates. I then read that you could use compound path and that works with my lines but not with the live fill. Is there a work around for my problem or do you have any smart suggestions of what I could do ?
    Thanks for your help in advance
    Kind regards
    Christopher

    A few questions:
    What AI version?
    By "Live Fill" are you refering to "Live Paint"?
    CS 6 lets you fill a stroke with a gradient. That may be what you used here.
    Congratulations learning about "compound paths" on you own. That's a step in the right direction.
    You can control a gradient fill across multiple objects by using the "Gradient Annotator" (under "View" or "G"). This allows you to set a gradient start and end point by dragging across your selected artwork. You can also edit the gradient sliders directly on the annotator.
    If you ARE using "Live Paint", you can use the "Live Paint Selection Tool" (hidden under the Live Paint Bucket tool, or "Shift-L"), to select multiple Live Paint segments, then drag the annotator across all segments. The annotator is hidden when used with Live Paint (at least in AICS5).
    I hope these tips are helpful.

  • Problem updating graphic styles specs, after scaling illustrator image

    Hello there,
    I'm designing a map in Illy and have created graphic styles for the various route keys I use.
    After recording the styles, I've enlarged the map, so the specs for all the styles has changed to a greater value (stroke width etc.)
    I've tried to update the graphic styles by selecting the enlarged stroke and saving it as a new style.
    But when I try to apply it, the style button still applies the original stroke width, from before I enlarged the image.
    The graphic styles window won't forget the old styles!
    How do I get round this? Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Gill

    If you scale strokes which are based on graphic styles, the original parameters of the styles are not changed. What actually happens is a kind of internal transformation which is indicated at the bottom of the Appearance Palette as a scaling percentage.
    To do what you want, just select one of the scaled strokes, release it from the style definition and then redefine the style based on that stroke.

  • Problem with Batch Processing an Action using a Graphic Style Library

    Hi,
    I have ~100 files in which I need to change the fill and stroke of all the linework. I created Graphic Styles for all my new features. I then created an Action that sets a fill and stroke color, Select Same Fill and Stroke, then applies the new Graphic Style. This repeats for about 20 variations (ie; select all Fill=X, Stroke=Y, then apply Graphic Style A. Select all Fill=X2, Stroke=Y2 then apply Graphic Style B). It runs fine in my test file. The problem occurs when I try to run it in batch mode. I have my new Graphic Style Library set to Persistent, so that it is open for every file. But the action does not apply the new Graphic Styles. It's like it doesn't see/read the Graphic Style Library. I don't get any errors, the action completes. It just doesn't apply anything.
    Does anybody know what I am doing wrong? Are you not able to use an action to apply a graphic style from an added Library?  Do I need to add the graphic styles to the Graphic Styles Panel and have the action reference the Panel, not the Library?
    Any help or insight is appreciated.
    M

    Try this:
    Copy an item that has the Graphic Style to the clipboard before starting the action. Then put a paste step followed by a delete step at the start of the action.
    Hope that helps.

  • Problem trying to create graphic style...

    I'm trying to create a nave menu and in doing so, create a single graphic style that can achieve my end goal. I can get what I want by using a seperate shape, but that defeats the purpose of the single graphic style. I thought I could achieve the look using an effect under
    Effect>Pathfinder
    But that doesn't get the result I expected. Below you can see both what the graphic style currently looks like, and what I want to add to it (the gloss) hopefully within the same graphic style. Is this possible?

  • Compound path w/varying line styles?

    Hello!  I'm generating an emf for ArcMap symbols.  I need this symbol to be shaped like Nevada, but to have a rectangular "hole" in its center.  I'm hoping I can convince Arc to then center a three digit route number in the "hole," as pictured.  I created this using the compound path function.  This forced the hole to take on the line weight of the outer perimeter, but I need the hole to be "invisible," with no line weight at all.  How can I achieve this?  Thanks!

    A compound path can only have a single line weight and/or fill colour.
    So what you should do is this:
    Use your drawing (minus the digits) and colour it with (say) a red fill and no stroke. The hole will be transparent.
    Now copy the outer shape only, paste it in front of the red compound and give it a black stroke (probably set to overprint).
    Then select the red compound and change its colour to white.
    The hole is still there but you can't see it unless you put something behind it.

  • Compound path text & shape mode problem

    Hi there,
    I'm working with some text that I've outlined and converted to a compound path. Then I'm applying a subtractive shape mode onto, but I'm noticing that it's actually changing the weight of the type. Can someone tell me why this is happening & perhaps suggest how I can retain the weight after applying the subtraction please? Thanks!

    I could possibly use a opacity mask, you're right, but I'd still like to know what the reasoning is behind the change in weight is when I outline text -> convert to a compound path -> subtraction shape mode. Strange thing is, is that it's happened to one set of letters & not another set of the same font done in I think the same way
    Thanks rcraiqhead however for the suggestion.

  • Problem with graphic styles

    I have created a graphic style, which I'm using to style a rectangle background item. I duplicated the style in order to create a slightly different version to use elsewhere. The original style's fill is set to 40% opacity, whereas the copied style's fill is 100% opacity.  If I have items using the two styles on the same page, the attributes from one are being applied to the other. See screen grabs. The panel is defined in the master page and is on its own layer in order to force it above the page content. I doubt this is the reason but it's worth mentioning.
    The panel on the left is how it should look. The panel on the right is somehow inheriting the attributes of the style it was copied from – the semi-opaque rectangle in the background. This happens in both the internal preview and in browsers.

    You got the answer, but I would just like to mention that sometimes (often) the forum has posts about documents becomming corrupt and is often tied to recycling older documents. I suggest that if it just the styles you want to use from a previous document, that you import the styles from the former document into a new document.
    Just a thought.

  • Making a clipping group with a compound path

    So, as of today I'm new to scripting for Illustrator, I'm using the ExtendScript Toolkit. However I'm not new to scripting my own solutions and I do have some experience with JavaScript already.
    What I'm trying to do is this: For all selected Items->Duplicate selected item and make a simple clipping group with it
    What I end up with visually doesn't change the picture, but gives me a lot of clipped colored areas which I then can edit in the isolated mode, allowing me far faster and better shading. Doing that by hand takes hours on some pictures, it'd take a second with a script.
    The script itself already perfectly works for normal PathItems. As obvious in the title, as soon as I have to apply the same to CompundPathItems things stop working. My issue is somewhat similar to this old thread [Problem with compound path clipping], but I couldn't find a solution there because I get different behavior.
    When I run the very same script that perfectly works with the normal PathItems with CompoundPathItems I get this: Error 9046: The top item in the group must be a path item to create a mask
    Well that's a problem. In the GUI there is absolutely no difference between making a clipping mask with a simple path and a compound path. The reference guide has frankly not helped me with this issue at all, the only thing I learned from that is that the CompoundPathItem object doesn't have a clipping attribute, but those included PathItems do.
    Here's what I have so far:
    if ( selected[i].typename == "PathItem" ) {
    var newGroup = doc.groupItems.add();
    copy = selected[i].duplicate(newGroup,ElementPlacement.PLACEATEND);
    selected[i].moveToBeginning(newGroup);
    newGroup.clipped = true;
    As I said, this part perfectly does what it's supposed to do for normal Paths.
    For CompoundPaths I use this workaround.
    if ( selected[i].typename == "CompoundPathItem" ) {
    var newGroup = doc.groupItems.add();
    copy = selected[i].duplicate(newGroup,ElementPlacement.PLACEATEND);
    selected[i].moveToBeginning(newGroup);
    compoundItems = selected[i].pathItems;
    compoundIndex = compoundItems.length;
    for ( f = 0; f < compoundIndex; f++ ) {compoundItems[f].clipping=true;}
    var lineList = new Array(10);
    for ( l = 0; l < lineList.length; l++ ) {lineList[l] = new Array( i * 10 + 50, ((i - 5) ^ 2) * 5 +50);}
    newPath = app.activeDocument.pathItems.add();
    newPath.setEntirePath(lineList);
    newPath.moveToBeginning(newGroup);
    newGroup.clipped = true;
    newPath.remove();
    Mind you, this workaround does work in so far that it bypasses that annoying and wrong error, and the Compound Clipping Path also works, with the only problem being that the Compound Clipping Path created like this is still displayed in its original colors in the Layers section, and is still selectable. When I lock the Compound Clipping Path I can work with it but still...
    So the question is, what am I missing here? Surely there must be a proper way to do this.

    app.executeMenuCommand()? That one eluded me so far, might be just the right thing. I'll definitely take a look, now just to find a ref on that, as unfortunately the official ref documents I have don't mention that command. Any place with a list of possible commands?
    Ah, also of course I'm not only doing it for the isolation mode. If you care to hear the background, here is it:
    As I said it's for shading the pictures I'm working on. I've iterated and tried through a bunch of techniques. For example gradient meshes on my first few real works. Now those meshes don't do well with complex shapes, which previously I alleviated by using a simple square or rectangle gradient mesh and using the original colored shape as a clipping mask. That did work, but it was a huge lot of work.
    After a bunch of attempts at that I went over to using simple gradients as a background for the shape and then I'm doing the shading freehand with the blob brush tool, using a graphic style and filters to make it look right. That's better, but properly making all the clipping masks takes me much longer than anything else.
    Now the problem is that the shading is not supposed to go over the lines, which is impossible to do properly without either messing up the order, or using clipping masks, hence the script. Because you know, if you use a blob brush with a strong Gaussian blur close to the lines you'll end up with stuff on both sides. If you don't start close to the line the shading won't look right if the darkest part of the shade needs to be close to the line. And that's where clipping masks do magic.
    And finally here's an example how I work with the script and the result:
    After I have traced a sketch, adjusted the line widths and everything to look neat I turn the paths to outline strokes and then make them into a live paint group (which would mess up the line widths, unless you turn the paths into outline strokes first).
    With that live paint group it takes me just a few minutes to flat color my piece. Then I expand the live paint group, in case of doubt spend some more minutes to make compound paths from all areas I need to shade in one piece, then I select all the areas and use my script to turn them into neat clipping masks. Then I can click any area, enter the isolation mode and go up one level so I'm in the appropriate group, where I can shade freely without the problem of going over the lines.
    At the end that allows me to apply a complex and in-depth shading, without wasting any time to get there.
    PS: Well, I just found out that Draw Inside is pretty darn close to what I want to do, and oddly enough it produces the same visual discrepancy with compound paths that my script produces. I'll be taking a closer look at that, though my script does a little more than just the clipping mask stuff, so maybe I'll go for a hybrid solution. Whatever makes for a better workflow.
