Comprehensive Tutorial

As a windows user for many years I am upset and surprised that Apple doesn't include a comprehensive tutorial DVD - website source for the use of the Macbook Pro.
Looking for each individual question is difficult and too time consuming. One shouldn't have to get a second or third party manual to learn what Apple should have provided with the product

There is so much information on Apple's site that is specific and if you use Google you can find any other missing information. Many of us have converted from PC's to Mac with nothing more than that. I would also recommend getting yourself a decent Snow Leopard book from Amazon or your favorite book store. One that I recommend is this one.
You can also sign up for classes at your local Apple Store, many are free.

Dynamic Data Tutorial

I have a client which has accumulated a large number of addresses of retailers for her product. I would like to make the database of the addresses searchable so site visitors can locate the closest retailer by either state or zip code. Is there a comprehensive tutorial out there to accomplish this project? I am using GLCS2.

Hi Stephen - unless you can find a pre-made system to handle the contacts database, you'd be looking more for book or two than a tutorial. GoLive CS2 doesn't have any GUI tools for working with a database, aside from writing your own code or using a pre-made system (the latter of which I don't have any specific recommendations for, sorry).
Part of it could depend on what technologies the web server supports. It's something I'd usually use PHP and MySQL for, but there are other options that would also work (ASP and MSSQL), XML and JavaScript, Flex/ActionScript, etc.

PC to Mac UGGGGHHHHH

So I just switched to a Mac and although with my PC my photos automatically uploaded to the windows program I then retrieved what I needed and organized them in PSE. The guy at the genius bar said that I should keep all my photos organized in iphoto and not import to the organizer on PSE, only using photoshop to edit. Why would he say that? He just said it would cause less problems. My problem is that I am having a hard time understanding the way iphoto organizes stuff outside of the fact that they call it an 'event'. Previously I had a file called 'photos' and within that folder there were subfolders broken out by year and within the specific year things were broken into event or subject. Well in the transfer that didn't happen. I have photos from 2010 in multiple 'events' (I think its called) and then those 'events' aren't even correct. For instance in one 'event' there are photos of some construction taking place (would have been in its own file) and there are photos of my husband and his college buddies. The photos weren't taken on the same day, but possibly uploaded at the same time. I did watch the little tutorial on IPhoto but it was definitely basic. Is there a more comprehensive tutorial somewhere?
Sorry so long winded....the switching process has been frustrating in more ways then just IPhoto. However my photos and PSE are essential for my work.

Adobe bridge is the other thing...I have been having sooo many other issues with the pc to mac thing that I haven't even attempted to hook my camera up yet. When I do, will adobe bridge automatically be uploaded?
Not by default - by default iPhoto will be the program to download your photos
You can NOT use both iPhoto and bridge without problems
I just read that IPHOTO 11 was having trouble recognizing Canon camera's so for now I'm not tackling that.
Millions and millions of people use Canon cameras with iPhoto with no problems - exactly what did you read and where? I just returned from a trip where I downloaded about 1000 photos from a Canon DLSR to our iPad and then from the iPad to iPhoto - no problems of any sort
However I was reading in my PSE book that for those of us using a mac we have to upload to them with adobe bridge
Again that is not a good idea
...I don't see it anywhere on the computer or is it something I have to download.
Adobe Bridge comes on the PSE disks - it is best not to use it - many people delete it immediately

Need Help with a Java programming exercise.

I have to Write a program that reads two times in military format (0900, 1730) and prints the number of hours and minutes between two times. Supply your own test program. Here are two sample runs. User inputs are the numbers.
Please enter the first time: 0900
Please enter the second time: 1730
8 hours 30 minutes
Please enter the first time: 1730
Please enter the second time: 0900
15 hours 30 minutes
Test Program I can write up myself. But the entire constructor I have no idea how to start. This is basic Java Coding. no C++ no importing anything.
So far this is what I got and I'm sure it's wrong:

There is a comprehensive tutorial on creating dynamic tables in the help section of the adobe lifecycle designer. Choose help from the menu->adobe lifecycle designer help. Click on the index tab and type in dynamic tables. 2 topics will then be displayed ie. option "creating a dynamic table using the button object" and "creating a dynamic table using the subform instance controls". I think the later is used for ZCI based forms but i am not sure about this.

9800 Pro blind flashing

I got a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro I would like to flash for my beloved MDD. I know that the procedure is easier using a PC, but I don't have one. I read elsewhere that blind flashing on the mac itself is possible but I can't seem to find a comprehensive tutorial. Please help!

Using webservices to check in files to UCM

Hello all.
We're trying to perform some tests in UCM, but we're not finding many examples about it.
This is what we want to do:
We want to use webservices to checkin files to UCM.
How?
1 - we will develop a java application
2 - inside the application there will be a button that will call the webservice
3 - after the webservice is called, the document should go to out UCM
Until now, I'm doing only research. Reading documents about webservices, how they work and everything I managed to find.
But I can't find an example about it. Someone, please, could say where I can find it?

It describes what service with what parameters should be called. There are also SOAP Request and Response schemes.
If I understood your question, it is more how to create a piece of code that calls the service, right? This very much depends on what your programming language is, and partially also what your IDE is. There is a comprehensive tutorial for Java/Jdeveloper available here: http://st-curriculum.oracle.com/obe/jdev/obe11jdev/ps1/webservices/ws.html I believe if you go through that you will be at least a journeyman on WS. ABAP Java connectivity

I want to have a sample program for SAP Java connectivity. I know SAP has a JCo but how to go about it. We have another system which needs to communicate with SAP 4.6C. Also, I would like to know whether while reading tables from other system, can this program update our tables.

To use JCo, download it (including the Javadocs) from http://service.sap.com/connectors. The zip file contains a comprehensive tutorial to program using JCo. You can also take a look at the FAQ on JCo at http://www.sapgenie.com/faq/jco.htm for more information.

You can definitely use JCo to update tables in SAP. You will either have to call an existing BAPI, or an RFC FM to do so.

Matching styles between Word and InDesign?

In Microsoft Word, can you create new style names (both character AND paragraph) same as you can in InDesign? and if those names match those in an InDesign template you are flowing them into, will the text come in STYLED like they are set up in InDesign?

JPA, how to write a service to persist objects in a 1-to-many relationship

i am using JPA for data persistence. i have two objects that are involved in a one-to-many relationship. for example, i have an object, Company, and Company can have one or more, Employee. i then define a service called, CompanyDao, which has the usual create-read-update-delete (CRUD) operations. my problem is that when i instantiate a new Company with new Employees and call CompanyDao.create(Company), i keep getting an exception.
Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails (`demo`.`employee`, CONSTRAINT `employee_ibfk_1` FOREIGN KEY (`companyId`) REFERENCES `company` (`id`))
i have an intuition on why this is happening. when i call CompanyDao.create(Company), the newly instantiated Company doesn't yet have an id (its unique identifier). that is why when it tries to insert the Employees of Company, i get this problem. but, my question is, shouldn't JPA take care of all of this for me? shouldn't it know that it is creating a new Company, will have to insert it, will have to retrieve the unique id (generated) and then populate the employee table with this id?
i was thinking about this problem, and i thought maybe i could insert the company first and then the employees later. however, the problem is, once i insert the company, how do i get its unique id? i cannot query for it any other way (i.e. by name) that will return a unique result.
if anyone knows of a good, comprehensive tutorial on how to write a service demonstration CRUD operations on objects with one-to-many relationship, please let me know.

Assuming your rig can support virtual machines, you can use Hyper-V and run another OS there.
Better practice however is to use a dedicated machine and use remote desktop to the server.

Validate Date Input

Hi,
I have 2 input date (date_created and date completed). The date_created column is mandatory but date completed is not.
If I enter a value on the date_completed column I want it to be validated against the date_create column.
in PL/SQL I can do it like this:
IF date_completed < date_created THEN
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Invalid Input!');
END IF
How can I do it in HTML-DB where the user will be prompted of an error message? In which part (item, region)?

To do this in HTML DB, you create a validation. Validation error message can be displayed both inline with fields and in designated areas for user notifications.
It may be helpful to study our comprehensive tutorial. It cover adding validations to your application on page 20.

Loading Vrml files in Swing using java3d loader

I've got problems loading Vrml files in Swing using java3d vrmlLoader. It seems to be only able to load vrml files that contains simple geometry like squares, cones etc. But when it comes to complicated shapes like IndexedFaceSet, its a blank. Does anyone know why?
What are the points to note when loading vrml files? Doesn't the code:
vrmlLoader = new VRML97Loader(VRML97Loader.LOAD_ALL);
and
scene = vrmlLoader.load(loadUrl);
load the entire vrml file? Is there any comprehensive tutorial or example that I can refer to? The fly through in Java 3d demo is too complicated. I'm still pretty new to this field. Thanks.

Did you download the example VRML file I had listed?
First make sure you test it with that one...it that works
then maybe the VRML file you are using is not version
#VRML V2.0 utf8
...Actually, I think you'd get some parsing error if you
used a VRML v1.0, so that probably is not the issue.
Do you have the vrml97.jar file in you path, maybe?
Check you path in Windows by typing "path" in command window. If you have the vrml97.jar file then
that's cool...if not then you must add it to your path.
OR you can temporarily compile by invoking
the -classpath <path> command....I think you'll have to
do the same when running the code....so do:
javac -classpath PUTPATHHERE TestVrml.java
java -classpath PUTPATHHERE TestVrml
If that doesn't work, do you have Java 3D installed?

I'm kind of lost as to what to do beyond that....by the way, I double checked my files and and recompiled and
reran them and they work fine. I've also checked them
on a different computer at work and they work their too.
So, long story short, it's something wrong on your end either with the java install or the vrml97.jar file not being in the path...I don't know much more.
