Compress and still leave in jpeg.

I have 400 mg file on my g4 tiger that needs to be down sized to no more than 9 mgs. I took a snapshot with frame grabber during slide show but then the file is only 1.8 mgs too small.........?

You could try re-sizing the image via editing it; even in Preview,
it is possible to scale an image to the screen and then Crop it;
or even use the keyboard commands to screen capture the new
Preview window, to make a smaller image copy of the first one.
Preview can also allow you to 'Save As' a file, so if you do crop
an image or change it, you may want to +save the changes in+
+a new file name+, so the original won't be altered. This can give
you a second chance to try something else, if that isn't adequate.
And Preview can also be used to change an image file type.
Or get a freeware image editor from a trusted download site online.
I've used a fairly good one that goes by the odd name ToyViewer
and it has more tools than I'd know what to do with.
• ToyViewer for Mac:
http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~ogihara/software/OSX/toyv-eng.html
What is the "real file size" you are working with? The abbreviation
for megabit, megabyte, gigabit, gigabyte, kilobyte, etc appear in
letters such as MB, GB, kb, etc. - {I am not sure what a mg is...}
Compression of a jpg file can result in something less than ideal;
in fact, there are losses in many image file types. Since you have
a large capture file to begin with, you should be able to reduce it
through re-sizing and it would still be a .jpg or .jpeg file type.
My image editing experiences, and captures from the Mac's screen
are somewhat limited; only a few thousand digital images and I try
to do minimal edits and almost no changes to my digital photos, as
I try to do the creative controls in the camera; as a realist, per film.
However that works out...
Good luck & happy computing!

I am trying to use my IPAD to video students in my conducting class, then email them the video for self evaluation.  However, many of the clips are too long to send.  Is there a way I can compress the clips and still send them via email so they can open and them using Quicken?
    Muzakmn

It depends on the clips' content, their current format, and how much you would need to compress them, but in most cases and with most email systems, it's difficult to impossible to compress a clip enough to be able to get it through the attachment size limits of most email providers and still have the video be comprehensible. You'll probably need to find a web site or other method where you could post the videos for download by the students.
You can try compression and trimming, though, and see if you can get the video small enough to email. An attachment often has to be 3MB or less to go through, though it depends entirely on the email systems on both ends. If you look to the right under "more like this" you'll find similar threads on the subject.

I have just deleted over 6,000 emails from my ipad and laptop leaving about 100 old emails and my ipad is still saying I am using 3.7 GB of space for my emails.  How can I fix this?

do a reboot.  press and hold both the home and sleep buttons intil you see the apple logo.  ignore the red slider.  Also, make sure the mail app is fully closed.  doulbe tap to see the task bar, then swipe up on the mail app.

  • How do I move just my movies folder (not the entire iTunes library) to an external hard drive and still be able to watch movies?

My movies library is getting frighteningly large, and I want to move it (not the entire library) to an external HD, and still be able to watch the movies (when the HD is connectec). How would I do that?

It's not a feature of iTunes but can be done using various work-arounds.
Small hard drive? Split your iTunes library across multiple volumes - http://www.macyourself.com/2009/04/24/small-hard-drive-split-your-itunes-library -across-multiple-volumes/  - copying media folders to external, then deleting from internal, then adding again.
Splitting & Managing Your iTunes Library - http://machintsandtips.com/i-j-k/itunes/splitting-managing-your-itunes-library/ - using option+drag to override iTunes from copying file to your default media folder.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/10160819#10160819 - Change location of media folder to start putting files on second drive.  Note later follow-up post about leaving 'organize media' and 'copy to drive' checked.

  • Open pictures in Camera RAW and still have paths/clipping paths?

    Hello
A big problem in Bridge is that I can not open my pictures in Camera RAW and still have my paths left. I work in a place where we get loads of product photos from many different companies and they almost always have a clipping path in it. Many of the pictures do we have to fix like colour, exposure etc and this is here Bridge comes in as the best solution to batchfix them. But now I have to take the long way through Photoshop. Is there a solution for this?, an update from Adobe or a script or something.
    Have a nice day!

You do know that you can deconfigure Camera Raw from opening TIFFs and JPEGs, right?
These are the settings I've chosen.  Done this way, JPEGs and TIFFs just open right into Photoshop, and their clipping paths would be intact.

  • How do I transfer from iphone 4 to 4s while still leaving gaming apps on the iphone 4?

I would like to transfer all everything from my iphone 4 to a 4s while still leaving the gaming apps on the orginial iphone 4.  My plan is to tranfer my phone number to the iphone 4s so that my son can use the iphone 4 as a gaming device only.

Do a backup of your 4, either to the cloud or your computer, depending on how you usually do this.
If you backed up your 4 to the computer, connect the new phone to the computer at this point, if you restored it to the cloud, do NOT connect it to the computer (or you might get an old backup by mistake). Just connect it to a charger.
When you first power up your new phone, it will ask you whether you want do configure it as a new phone or to restore it from a backup.  Select "from a backup".  The prodedure is slightly different for computer and iCloud backups, but you'll be able to figure it out.
This will restore all your apps, settings, and camera roll.  Then you can either sync it to the computer or redownload your music and movies (depending on how you manage these things).
Once this is done, you can delete everything you don't want from the old phone.

  • How can I store photos on an external hard drive and still manage w IPhoto?

The hard drive on my MacBook is almost full and I want to move my photos to an external hard drive.  Can I do this and still manage and organize the photos using I Photo?   I can export the photos, but when I do I lose the organization (Events, Albums, etc.) that are in I Photo.   With my new DSLR camera the photos (JPEGS) are really big and I am quickly running out of storage on the MacBook.  Thanks in advance for you help.
    Jim in Seattle

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • 5 months 10 engineers, 2 cables and still no fix

I’ll try and keep this short, end of May our line developed intermittent noise and broadband loss problem, worse when it rains.
June and July were spent with BT and our ISP trying to blame each other with us in the middle getting the hassle.
Eventually BT seemed to accept it being a line fault and August and September has been spent trying to tie this down. Last but one visit our drive and path was dug up to lay a new cable. 10th engineer arrived yesterday fitted new cable. As usual the fault was not there when he left. Then it started raining 10 minutes after he left, now it’s worse than ever.
We have had a next to useless phone and very little internet access for 5 months which we are paying for.
We have had to stay in for 12 days for engineers visits, 2 of which never turned up.
I have lost count of the hours spent on the phone (when it works) trying to resolve this issue.
And still we have the fault
All this has come at a time when we really need reliable communications due to family matters and BT have persistently let us down so much so that we have both bought Smart Phones for Internet access and reliable communications. I have also bought a Mobile internet dongle for PC internet access. Therefore we are now paying for our communications twice.
So could someone at BT please tell me what are the benefits for me continuing with my unreliable BT landline?
Personally I cannot see any benefits but only more hassle, expense for a poor service and more time off waiting for engineers who may or may not turn up.

Thanks for the reply Stephanie I shall email our details as requested
Just to put you in the picture the 11th engineer came out to have a go, it looks like it may be sorted.
The fault was not the cables which previous engineers had renewed (the fault came back even with the new cables). The fault was actually the ducts through which the cables ran were flooding, hence the fault getting worse when it rained, but my telling BT engineers and customer support that we have had this problem 2 years ago (we were had about 5 weeks of hassle then) was ignored.
Anyway, after the 11th engineer visit fixed OUR fault he left the nextdoor neighbours disconnected. They are in their 80s and need the phone for contact with their family etc. So even though our phone fault was sorted I still found myslef having to go through the pain of the bt fault reporting procedure for the nextdoor neighbours.
OBTW It took a week for a BT engineer to come round and fix the neighbours phone which a BT engineer had cut off in teh 1st place.
    What a debacle!
I now still have to decide if I am to cancel our contract with BT because over the past few years we have been cut off or had faults on our line on average of every two years. So every two years we have all this hassle, time expense and stress.
Yes stress, it may come as a surprise to the powers that be at BT that the fault reporting and repair services leaves alot to be desired and the amount of time and frustration we customers have to face trying to get a service that we are paying for is very stressful especially when BT protract the fault over 5 months.
Things have improved a little from 2 years ago however, the new priority fault team (I dont know the full title) who get involved after 4 fault reports have been helpful (Cath especially) but even with their help it has still taken 5 months.

  • 1.0.2 Update and still no volume fix

Ok, I went to the AT&T store by my office and I call my house phone from every iPhone in the store, and they all had the same level volume as my iPhone. (LOW) So I no longer believe those FEW people that say it must be my phone and that there phone does not have volume issues.
I drive a somewhat noisy vehicle, and still this is the only phone I have ever had issues hearing callers on. For those people who say they have no issues, well then I suggest they leave there house or quiet office and tell me if they still have no hearing issues. Try hearing callers in a crowded restaurant or coffee shop.
To sum this up we now have two updates from Apple and they still ignore this problem. When we they fix this

They made the iPod the best feature on the phone, and that would be fine if advertised it as an iPod 6th generation that includes a phone... but they didn't. It is called iPhone that has an iPod, and the slacked off on the phone.
It is a phone, an iPod and an internet device in no particular order. Although I agree with you that the earpiece volume needs to be improved, this is the first generation of this device which was just released less than 2 months ago. For you it is the earpiece volume and for others it is something else that hasn't been addressed yet in less than 60 days so the assumption is Apple doesn't care and isn't working on any of it which is an incorrect assumption.
Yes the iPhone's earpiece volume is somewhat weak but apparently not for everyone to the extent of your complaint.
Within the first two weeks after purchasing the iPhone, I experienced occasional crackling through the earpiece with some calls only, not all.
I called AppleCare and after an hour on the phone trying various things - including the tech support person calling me on my iPhone to see if receiving a call made any difference over when placing a call - my iPhone was picked up and sent in for testing and repair or possible replacement. I was not informed about what was discovered as the cause of this particular problem but I was sent a new replacement iPhone in exchange. I haven't experienced the same earpiece crackling with the replacement and the earpiece volume seemed to be improved but it wasn't a night and day difference by any means.
Long story short and as already provided by another poster in this thread, I suggest calling AppleCare (800) 694-7466 to report this problem which is unacceptable to you. Your iPhone will be picked up for repair or possible replacement and if replaced and the replacement is no better and still not acceptable, you have a good chance of returning your iPhone for full credit without being charged a restocking fee.

  • Iphoto won't open.  Reinstalled from iLife.  Little thing just spins and spins.  Any suggestions? disk and still nothing.

iPhoto won't open.  Little circle/wheel icon just keeps spinning.  Reinstalled from iLife disk, and still no luck.  Any suggestions?

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

icons keep leaving my dock.  I put them back, and they leave again.  How do I keep them on the dock?

Did you request that they be left in the Dock?  To do this you activate the application and its icon will be in the Dock, click and hold on it, a pop-up menu will show near the icon and in it will be a menu with "Option" in it. Click on "Option" and you will find an item that will say "Keep In Dock", click on it and the icon will stay in the Dock. If you have done all this and the icon still goes away someone else will have to help you.

  • How do I export HDV, DV and still images as one HDV sequence?

Hi, my sequence (HDV-PAL) contains mainly HDV footage but also a few DV shots and stills that have a few applied effects. I want to export the whole thing as HDV (because it will be shown on a big screen) and don't mind a bit of lost quality on the DV sections, but would like the best possible outcome. I know it's difficult to mix DV and HDV together, but I've done it, the project is complete, I can't recapture anything (will take too long) and I need to export this thing as beautifully as possible. At the moment any exporting (I've tried lots of different codecs) makes the different fields go crazy, and if I try dump the whole project on a DV50 sequence then all mixed media ratios freak out and become huge. I haven't tried frame blending or blurring yet because I don't know anything about it...
Is there a way to export this project to DVD and also to a DV TAPE without trashing my DV and still images and conserving the high res HDV footage?
    Kerrin
    PowerMacG5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5G RAM

To make the MPEG for the DVD and the DV version: Choose file/export/QuickTime Movie... then check ON the "make self contained" option. Open that file in Compressor and choose the lowest time preset you can. Then select another preset to use for that same compression session... from the Advanced Format conversions, choose the DV NTSC preset. The resulting movie will be a DV file you can record to DV tape.
It's pretty likely this will take quite a while to do...

  • When I go to Preview to view a photo it shows up for less than a second then disappears and just leaves a gray box where the photo should be. iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I need Preview for work.

After the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 update When I go to use Preview to view a photo it shows up for less than a second then disappears and just leaves a gray box where the photo should be. iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I need Preview for work.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.
