Compress from FCP or file?

I am creating over 80 video files of songs for DVD's. To speed the production flow, I'd like to finish a batch of edits and then batch convert in Compressor.
1. Will I have better quality DVD videos if I convert each file directly from FCP when I finish the edit, than if I create a finished QT video, then batch convert?
2. If I were to create finished edited video files for batch conversion, what's the best file format to use when creating finished video files from FCP for DVD output?

Either should give you a comparable output. The advantage of "Send to Compressor" is that FCP stays open and Real Time effects will not have to be rendered, which speeds up the entire workflow.
If, OTOH, you create reference files, FCP needs to render out the RT effects.
Some FCP installs are very stable and can do the "Send to Compressor" workflow very reliably. Others, not so much. The only way to know is to try.
2. If I were to create finished edited video files
for batch conversion, what's the best file format to
use when creating finished video files from FCP for
DVD output?
Use the settings of your sequence. Don't have FCP recompress to some other setting, which could result in taking a quality hit. I prefer batching out sequences as reference movies. Others prefer self-contained movies. Then take those into Compressor and create MPEG-2s and AC-3 audio files.

  • Best settings for a high quality dvd from FCP reference file?

Can anyone give me a list of steps to make the best possible quality DVD from an FCP reference file? The film is 10 minutes long, NTSC. Or can someone direct me to some threads that address this issue? Thanks so much.

  • Chapters for h.264 compression from FCP

I've been using FCC to edit videos that are accompanied by slide show presentations. What I do is I put a marker on the time line every time a new slide comes up in the presentation and then I just insert the slides and compress the video.
What I want to do now is somehow make it so that those markers I placed on the time line are added to the final compressed video (I use h.264 but if there's a way of doing it with another codex then I would consider changing).
I know that there are ways of adding chapters to already compressed videos by opening them in quick time and going through a relatively lengthy process. The problem is I work with a lot of presentations so it would be great if there was a way of exporting the markers I created in FCC and easily adding them to the compressed video.
    Any ideas?

For the time being, until we get Blu-ray support on the Mac via DVD Studio Pro as well as a Blu-ray drive for the MacPro, I either export in AVC to make a High-Def DVD playable in a Blu-ray player (limited to about 20 mins. on a DVD-5 or 40 mins. on a DVD-9) or an AVC file playable on my PS-3.
Since my original post, I've had success working with 1080/24p files in the 60i wrapper as outlined in article HT2410 (Final Cut Pro 6: 1080/24p workflow for Canon HV20). I perform the reverse telecine using compressor and import the 24p file into my sequence. I then export AVCHD via the quicktime encoder and the result is visually indistinguishable from the original MTS files from the SDHC card. So, half my problem is solved, but when I'm working with 1080/60i files, my export has significant interlacing artifacts and judder which the original MTS files don't have. Since my original 24p problem seemed to originate on the import side, I can only assume that the same is the case for the 1080/60i files as well. Problem is, I'm not sure what settings to use to eliminate the problem on the 1080/60i side. I am experiencing the same judder in my canvas viewer further supporting the "import side problem" theory. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, i have a pdf file generated by a MicroStrategy tool
The pdf file has flate compression in it
When i open this file in wordpad i see this text:
    /Filter /FlateDecode
The receiver cannot accept pdf files that has the above compression
How can i remove Flate compression from this pdf file?
Also, what is Flate, Inflate and Deflate with respect to pdf compression?

You may try a forum for the MicroStrategy tool. It isn't a Adobe product.

  • 2 of the same FCP Movie files but in Compressor one is 4:3 other 16:9

    Hi,
I am trying to compress 2 FCP movie files to MEPG-2 for a DVD. I want the file 16:9
    Both files are:
    Dimensions: 1920x1080
Codecs: HDV 1080i60, (little Endian) timecode.
When I drop them in Compressor and look at the preview, one file is 16:9 and the other looks 4:3.
The info of the video that is 4:3 says:
    Encoded Bounds 1440x1080
    Display bounds 1920x1080
Pixel Axpect Ratio: HDV 1080i (16:9)
    The other file is:
    Encoded Bounds 1920x1080
    Display bounds 2560x1080
Pixel Axpect Ratio: HDV 1080i (16:9)
I only have the FCP movie file (not the original timeline.) I have tried re-encoding the FCP movie file and still get the same 4:3 look.
How do I get the "Display bounds" to be 2560x1080?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
with regard to the movie that displays an incorrect aspect ratio:
In Compressor *Preview window* go to the middle of the top>open that popdown menu and select/check "Correct for pixel aspect ratio".
    Hope that helps,
    G.

  • How ro export small (compressed) files (.mpg) with sound from FCP or compr.

I have some dv pal footage that I need to store in in very small files. Then I need to convert it back to dv, for editing.
The quality (regarding artefacts and all that) is not important. The stuff was ripped from DVDs originally and are only to be used as reference.
Can I export an .mpg file with sound muxed into it from FCP or Compressor?
    H.264 produces to big files.
    Thanks for any replyes:)

    Hm, what a weird workflow.
I presume you are trying to edit with this stuff in FCP, so my question is, If you are grabbing media off DVDs, and converting with MPEG Streamclip or some such thing, and then trying to down-rez to edit with proxy footage, how do you plan to use timecode to reconnect to the high-res media when your cut is done?
h.264 can produce to big files or small files, depending on the settings of the file you tell it to produce to.
Consider that the amount of time you would spend converting media back and forth to low-res formats of lousy quality could be much more valuable than the cost of a firewire drive which you could use to convert your DVDs directly to DV, which you will find much easier to work with.
Hope this is helpful to U

  • Why is MP4 (MPEG4) Compression direct from FCP (vs from DVD) lower quality?

I am creating video podcasts and I have been fighting this issue for a couple weeks.
When I compress using mpeg4 directly from QuickTime I get unacceptable pixilation surrounding the subjects but when compress the same file from DVD using handbrake or iSquint it looks just fine. I am using the same settings.
Creating a DVD for each compression is silly work around. Does anybody have any advice here?
Note: when I compress using h.264 from FCP it looks fine, however I have decided against the h.264 codec at this time due to the processing toll it puts on the end user that can cause jumpy playback.
    Power Book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP 4.5

I would rather use mp4 than h.264 and I have seen videos (eg. tikibartv) that look great with the mp4 codec.
Does anybody have any advice here?
I take it you've tried a workflow which emulates the site you referenced, such as...
File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion
In the Format drop-down, select MPEG-4
Click on the Options... button and...
    Alter Image Size to 320x240.
Change the Data Rate to 500
    Set Frame Rate to 15
Alter the Key Frame property to 75
    Click OK
After you've selected the right destination folder, go ahead and press Save.
This will produce a .mp4 file. If you want to make this a .mov file, change the extension in the Browser.
...and that hasn't given you the results you're looking for?

  • Newbie question: How to share large QT movie files exported from FCP X?

Well, I've navigated through FCP X for the first time and I now have 16 QuickTime movie files I have exported from FCP X. Each file is a song from a live band performance. The files are:
    - Apple ProRes 422
    - 1920 x 1080
    - 24-bit
    - Frame rate 29.97 fps
Now I need to share these files with the band members. They will use them for two purposes:
    - Watch, as feedback on their performance. In this case, I'd like to preserve the quality as much as possible
    - Put some of the movies on YouTube, where quality will be lost, of course. They may post only short clips from the songs.
These 16 .mov files total 115GB. The smallest is 6.5GB, the largest is 13.9GB.
The quality of the movies is fantastic, both video and audio. I cringe to think about degrading the quality............but I have the practical problem of how to get the files to five different band members.
I normally distribute audio files I've mixed in Pro Tools via DVD-R discs, but the files are much smaller.
What are my options for sharing the files?
Do I need to use an application like Compressor to compress the files (ugh) to get them onto multiple DVD-R's?
I would assume this is a common problem that all FCP X users deal with.

I strongly recommend you to use Compressor. It is easy to use and there a lot  of presets.

  • Need to export an AC3 audio file from FCP

Does anyone know how to export (or convert to) and AC3 audio file from FCP? My compressor is not currently working, is there another way? I have Sorenson Squeeze and FCP 5.0.4. Thank you!!!
    alex

Upload your audio file to my Public folder and wait 20 mins. I'll compress the audio to .ac3 for you if you're in a crunch. Check back in my Public Folder and I'll have it there for you.

  • NTSC to PAL - Export straight from FCP or use an mpeg file?

    I was reading this
    http://www.macworld.com/article/49306/2006/02/marchcreate.html
however it does not mention what to bring into compressor.
Should I export my ntsc sequence straight from FCP into compressor, or should I drag an ntsc mpeg file I aldeady made into compressor? Ive been trying the latter but can't do much as each step gives me the spinning beach ball for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks much.

Yes, you should export directly from FCP Using Compressor. Exporting to a heavily compressed MPEG-file, and then converting that from NTSC to PAL makes no sense. You would want your video to go through as few conversions/generations as possible.

  • I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio t

I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio tracks - specifically one stereo pair to be t1&t3, the other stereo pair to be t2&t4. This is the standard way requested by an international distributor of tv programmes. I understand how to set the sequence in FCP to output 4 audio tracks - either 2 stereo pairs (1&2, + 3&4), or 4 discrete tracks. But how do I then output this as a QT file?
The manual tells me that to export multiple audio tracks, File>Export>QT Movie has it's Config pop-up menu in the Audio Settings area of the General tab of the Sequence Settings. Well, that's set for 4 discrete channels, but the QT export settings only allow for 2 mono or 1 stereo output, and that's what I get when I try it. What it says in the manual just doesn't happen.
Exporting via Compressor, on the other hand, has an abundance of choices of 4-track outputs, none of which are labelled as anything resembling 'discrete'. Would any of those 4.0 settings suffice? Or am I likely to get myself into difficulties further down the line? As I am monitoring for this task on a 2-track audio system, I cannot confirm exactly what I am getting when I use any of those settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    John

Call me naive, but I've not heard of splitting the stereo pairs like this before.
What broadcaster? (perhaps one of our EU regulars will drop in...)
You can do all sorts of pairing but it is coincident tracks pairing- eg 1/2 + 3/4
    Sorry I can't offer anything.

  • Reading a Compressed File from a ZIP File, which is an entry of ZIP File

    Hello, Experts,
Would it be possible somebody to help me with code example for the following problem?
I want to read a compressed file from a ZIP file, which is an entry of ZIP File, without extacting/writing files on file system. Is this possible?
Lets say we have a ZipFile1. There is ZipFile2 inside ZipFile1. And inside ZipFile2 is FileA. The scenario is reading FileA without extracting on file system.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Cheers
    RADY

The classes you want to be using are java.util.zip.ZipInputStream and and ZipEntry from the same package. Construct the ZipInputStream with the input you have for the outer zip. Loop with ZipInputStream.getNextEntry until you find the inner zip you're looking for - that method returns a ZipEntry, and you get the name of the zip entry with ZipEntry.getName. Read the ZipInputStream from that point into some buffer, and read that buffer into a new ZipInputStream - rinse and repeat until you have the contents of the file in the zip in the zip...

  • PAL files exported from FCP don't display

This is a strange one... SD PAL uncompressed files exported from FCP 6.03 won't display, you just see black. HD files are fine, as are SD PAL files exported a while ago - prior to a recent pro apps or QT update possibly? As a workaround, if they exported via compressor instead of by 'export quicktime' in FCP, they work fine. Shake is 4.0 since 4.1 doesn't want to display via a decklink.
Any ideas? This seems to be a new one.

Does the computer your using to view this video have Final Cut Pro installed?

  • Best Qualilty From FCP into Compresser

Ok, So ive filmed a short 6 min video in HDV 1080i60,and edited in that format, now because most of my clients DVD players don't read HDDVD I must compress it to something readable for SDDVD with out losing any of the quality. Now Ive tried MPEG-2 and it's crap, so ive tried numerous differnt formats and the best that ive come up with is JPEG-PHOTO. 1. Is their anything better then this?
    2. Should I just transfer back onto my DV tape and go to a post house and get them to transfer on to DVD or will they have the same problem?
3.Can I Have and HD format and SD format on the same DVD so when it's inserted to HDDVD or SDDVD it can read it?
    Any Answers would be greatful?
    Thanks

DVD with out losing any of the quality. Now Ive tried MPEG-2 and it's crap, so ive tried numerous differnt formats and the best that ive come up with is JPEG-PHOTO. 1. Is their anything better then this?
It needs to be MPEG 2 for SD DVD. Export from FCP uncompressed. Then use the best settings in Compressor. Bring into DVD SP and set track to 16:9 letter box. If you have more details on the footage and workflow it helps (settings, compression settings, type of footage, what does "crap" mean, how are you viewing things.)
    2. Should I just transfer back onto my DV tape and go to a post house and get them to transfer on to DVD or will they have the same problem?
You could but you should be abllee to get fairly good results. Also downloadd bitVice from innobits.se (they have demo) to see if that helps. Not sure how mmuch a transfer house may charge but it may cover the cost of bitVice
3.Can I Have and HD format and SD format on the same DVD so when it's inserted to HDDVD or SDDVD it can read it?
No, though the new HD players are in theorry suppossed to be backkwards compatible (HD DVD not blu ray)

  • Export DPX files from FCP with Timecode

    Hi,
Have anyone found a way to export DPX files from FCP, and also get the timecode in the DPX header...
    Thanks for answers!!
    //P

    Your workflow is not correct.
In FCP I bring the clip to the timeline, trim, color correct it then File> Export> Using Compressor. Compressor opens up and places the clip into the Batch Window. This works fine, but when I go back to FCP, delete the clip from the timeline and place an other clip there and when I Export>Using Compressor, Compressor places the clip in a new Window title "Untitle 1" and so it goes on. As far as I understood, whenever you add a clip from the FCP it places it below the first clip so when I want to add my settings, I can add all 3 settings to all the clips. Did I missunderstand something?
You're misunderstanding a couple of different things. When you send a clip or sequence from FCP to Compressor, you cannot then apply the settings you want in Compressor then go back to FCP and delete that clip from your sequence ... Compressor is trying to reference that sequence. If you keep removing clips, then Compressor won't follow those clips ... you're essentially breaking the link between Compressor and FCP by doing this.
    Try this:
    1. Load Clip A into the Viewer, Set your In & Out points and add your Color Correction.
    2. Press Command U to Make a Subclip. This will create a separate "clip" in your bin. Rename as necessary.
    3. Repeat this process for your other 19 clips.
    4. Then Select all of your new subclips in your Browser, then File > Export > Using Compressor. This will open Compressor and add all of those subclips into the Job window.
    5. Add your appropriate Target settings and set your Destinations and revise any filenames if necessary.
    6. Click Submit.
