Compressed Web movie looks stretched vertically instead of 16:9, HELP!

Hi guys, I shot some footage with Canon XL2, 16:9, 24pa.
After editing I put it in compressor 3 to make a quicktime 7 H.264 web streaming movie,
with frame size 720x480,
but the movie is stretched vertically.
Can anyone help me with the settings to keep it 16:9.
Thanks
Zia

Just set the frame size to a Custom (16:9) aspect ratio in Compressor, and the pixel aspect ratio to Square. You find those settings in the Inspector window, under the Geometry tab.
Calculating the aspect ratio manually is pretty easy too, but when using Compressor, you can just let Compressor do the job.
Width / 16 * 9 = Height
I would recommend implementing frame controls in your workflow too. Have a look at this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7309534#7309534

  • 16:9 video, but looks stretched  vertically

I am making a dvd in dvdstudio pro. My movie clips are edited in iMovie (16:9) and my menus are made in Photoshop with a preset (16:9).
The problem is, when i burn the dvd and put it into my dvd player that is hooked up to my tv, the picture fills up the whole screen and the menus and video looks stretched vertically. It doesn't look like 16:9. And there are no black horizontal "free areas" either as there usually is when it is 16:9. I have chosen my menus and video to be 16:9 in dvd studio pro. When i press simulate though, it first appears in 4:3, and when i change it to 16:9 it looks like it should.
What am i doing wrong? I want it to look better on my tv!

I have set all tracks and menus to 16:9 letterbox in the inspector.
When I play hollywood movies I see letterboxing on both a widescreen tv and a 4:3 tv.
When I built my DVD to my harddrive and opened it in Apples DVD player, it looks rectangle, but the height of the rectangle seemed to be too high. I have a 22" widescreen tft-monitor and the black horizontal stripes from the letterboxing are only about an inch tall in fullscreen. If i play a hollywood movie, the "black stripes" are much bigger, about twice as big. This is what I want my movie to look like.
I have checked the dvd-player and TVs settings but there seemed to be nothing wrong. I mean, the hollywood movies look great. Why doesn't mine?
How do I get my DVD to have these black stripes from the letterboxing effect?
Heres a picture on my 22" widescreen.

  • Video from MacBook Air camera looks stretched vertically. How can I change this?

I just got a MacBook Air and it looks like whenever I use the camera for video chat or webcam, the results are really stretched vertically. This is driving me nuts since I have to be on client video calls and I look really silly.
    How do I fix this??

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership. If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to  exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different.

  • Having problems compressing web movie, quality doesn't look good, PLZ HELP

    Hi guys,
I used to be able to create a sharp/ crisp clean quicktime 7 web streaming movie in compressor 3 with it's default settings but lately it appears to be compressing a very poor quality QT7 web streaming movie. I have not changed any settings as far as I know.
I have always used H.264 800kbps for High Bandwidth and never had any problems with quality or the way it looked.
Can anyone help me out please.
    Thanks,
    Zia

Are you compressing the same kind of source material (content) as before? If you have content with a lot of fast motion (i.e. sports), you might need to adjust the video bitrate accordingly (increase it).
You could also try implementing frame controls and try an other more appropriate frame size. Have a look at this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7525834&#7525834

  • LR3 Stretches Vertical photos to be Horizontal, help!

I have been using LR3 since the first beta and never had this problem until yesterday. I imported my RAW files into LR and any that I shot that are vertical will rotate horizantal but keep the image as a vertical and stretch it out to make it fit in the box and distort the photo making it incredibly difficult to work with.
What's going on? Is this a bug or did I do something wrong?

The one image I can see this (but only for a subsecond) is a DNG from a Nikon D3, which is not one of my cameras.
I think slowness of LR can not be the reason, unless you're importing 10'000s of photos in one go. As I said, if I import this one photo, I can only see the effect for less than a second (and I have a slow machine).
I this effect reproducible if you import some of these photos, for example into a new, fresh catalog? If not, try deleting/renaming your Previews folder and let LR build the previews again.

  • QT Web Movie from FCP looks and Plays Choppy!

    Hi guys,
I finished a 4 miniute music video in FCP3. It was shot on Canon XL2 with 24p, 16:9. My "QT web movie looks and plays very choppy".
Here are my steps and settings:
    FCP>File>Export>quicktime.
    Video settings:
    . Video Compression Codec= Sorenson Video3
    . Compression Quality= Medium
    . Motion Frames Per Second= 15fps
    . Keyframes Every= 300 frames
    . Bitrate: 90 kbits/sec
    Sound Settings:
    . Audio Compressor= IMA 4:1
    . Rate= 32.000 KHz
    . Size= 16 bit
    . Use= Mono
    Please Help!
    Thanks,
    ZIA

Sounds like a field or interlacing issue, Zia.
Maybe you had interlaced checked when it should have been progressive on export.
Or maybe the other way round - hard to see from where I sit.
Any of the fcp stuff done in Motion ? - 'coz sometimes motion does not get things right and you have to manually tell it what it needs to know.
Cntrl/Right click a clip >Reveal Source (I think its called).

  • When I compress my movie to quicktime, the audio doesn't sync properly, even though it looks fine in iMovie. How do I fix this?

When I compress my movie to quicktime, the audio doesn't sync properly, even though it looks fine in iMovie. How do I fix this?

Audio on the timeline, especially stream, tends to play very reliably. Is this project under any NDA or can you provide a FLA to examine? Let me know if you want to private message it and I'll shoot you a message.
What version of Flash Player are you targeting and is this AS2 or AS3?

  • Anamorphic to QuickTime .mov is stretched to 4:3

When I output to a QuickTime movie, my FCE sequence goes from 16:9 to 4:3, with the attendant vertical stretch.
I have mini-DV SD footage shot in anamorphic mode, mixed with 16:9 HD MPEG-4 720p footage shot with my digital still camera. I used Compressor to convert the HD shots to DV-NTSC Anamorphic, so no rendering needed. I am using FCE 3.5. My sequences have the anamorphic option ticked, Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601, Frame size: 720:480.
But why does Quicktime want to stretch the 16:9 footage to full frame 4:3? I tried a lot of different output routes, the closest being to use QuickTime Conversion to make a DV Stream 4:3, which gave me a 4:3 Quicktime movie with black bars, but at least the aspect ratio was right. Most other options either gave me a vertical stretch to 4:3, no black bars, or kind of a 16:7, which was squatty, making the people fat.
As I said, the source material AND the sequences are checked for anamorphic, and look fine in FCE 3.5. But most of the Quicktime options stretch it vertically to 4:3 on output.
    HELP!

Thank you for your responses this morning.
I realized this morning that I did not indicate for what purpose I am exporting in the first place. Sorry. The ultimate aim for this is web streaming on my website. Some of it may go to YouTube, but the primary content is a little over an hour, so that limits what YouTube can provide.
I do have QuickTime Pro, although I clearly do not know how to use it to solve my mystery.
Since the majority of the footage is from my old-school mini-DV NTSC camcorder, with only about 10% from the digital still camera in HD 720p (1280x720) movie mode, my understanding was that the best route was to shoot the mini-DV in 16:9 WideScreen mode, then use Compressor to convert the 16:9 HD footage to DV-NTSC mode. That allowed me to edit in FCE 3.5 in a 16:9 environment without any rendering of footage.
So, I understand that "All DV NTSC is 720x480 whether it's 4:3 or widescreen." Which means that in my case, I will end up with a 4:3 output with black bars top and bottom. Unavoidable, I suppose. I'm okay with that, I guess, although it would be great to have it 16:9 on the web without bars... say 720x405 or something like that. But that is a different issue. Right now, I just want to output it to the web with the proper aspect ratio.
"The widescreen image is done by anamorphically squeezing the image horizontally." Well, squeezing or stretching is exactly what I DON'T want. The footage imports into FCE as 16:9 with gray bars top and bottom and the people look normal. But it exports to QuickTime as 4:3 stretched with no black bars, and people look tall and skinny. Playing back from QuickTime Pro plays back tall and skinny with no black bars in a 4:3 window.
Is that enough info? The sequence is set with the anamorphic flag checked, and so is all of the footage. But the output movie looks like the anamorphic flag was unchecked and I don't know where to check it.
If I output it using QuickTime Conversion or Compressor to 720p with cropping, but make it a custom size of 720x405 would it take the NTSC DV footage and keep it 720 wide but give me a 16:9 output? Or would it try to distort everything to 1280x720, then squeeze it down?
It is too late now for this project, but should I have simply shot the DV footage 4:3 and used cropping on the 720p HD footage to make it 4:3/720x480?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • External monitor view looks stretched

Over the weekend, I ventured into the world of Mac ownership with a new macbook pro.  At my office, I've connected it to a 23" external monitor just to make it easier on my eyes.  When I first set it up last night, the view on the external monitor looked stretched or a like blown up version of what's on my computer screen.  (FTR, I have mirror display turned on because I'm keeping the macbook on a shelf under my desk and just want to work from the one screen.)  I messed with the resolution size of the external monitor but that didn't fix the problem.
Today, when I came in and hooked everything up, the screen looked like how I originally expected it to look - not stretched or any of that junk. Just very crisp and clean - exactly the way I wanted it.  Then a bit ago, I tried to mess with clamshell mode and for some reason, that made the external monitor go back to being stretched.  I've tried restarting several times and unplugging the DVI->mini display port converter but it's not fixing it.
I have no idea what I did right this morning, but can anyone help me?  It's a stupid problem, for sure but it's annoying staring at this stretched screen.

Try this instead, hit CMD F1 to place the monitor in extended desktop mode,  It should look good again.
Go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab > notice the grey "menubar" at the top of the left display.  Move it to your other monitor display.  This will control which monitor has the dock and menubar.  If the external monitor is not available, it moves back to the MBpro.
    Regards,
    Captfred

  • All extensions but mov look really grainy

So I am trying to export my movie as either an avi, mpg, wmv, or anything that is compatible with premiere pro (mov isn't). My problem is, while the .mov looks great in terms of resolution, any other file type looks like a cell phone quality movie. How can I get an exported movie that is compatible with premiere pro but looks good?

First of all, don't export a .mov file from LiveType.
Instead, save the project file (it has a .ipr ending) and import that into Final Cut Pro -it can be treated exactly as if it were a video file.
Do not use Export with QuickTime Conversion from FCP as it always recompresses your footage, even if you export using the same codec as your FCP Sequence uses.
Go to: File > Export > QuickTime Movie > Current Settings > Self Contained.
Use QuickTime Player or Compressor to make your .avi file from that exported movie with the compression setting as "None".

I have a PowerBook G4 17" and need Apple discs to set it up again. Mine lost during move. Screen seems damaged, has vertical lines.  Can anyone help. I can call as I have unlimited calling on my iPhone 6  anywhere in North America.

    king,
If your Powerbook's serial number (do not post it here) starts with "W8" then the vertical lines are mostly likely due to a defect in the display itself. W8 is a factory code and, during the iMac G5 and PowerBook G4 timespan, that factory shipped thousands of units with the same defect. It cannot be fixed via software.
As all PowerBooks are now classed as "obsolete," an Apple Store will not work on it. They will look at it ands tell you it has vertical lines and that they cannot fix it. This Apple article shows Apple devices they curently considered obsolete:
Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support
It is possible that some Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) will still work on older computes but they cannot get neededparts from Apple. As this issue was so pervassive, it wil be hard for you or an AASP to find a used/pulled display that is not effected with the "W8 Curse."
Although I love the old PowerBooks, I would not even spent the money for disks, much less the US$150-400 it would cost to replace the display, even should one be available.
If you give us a rough idea of where you are in the world, we can suggest repair shops specializing in fixing older Mac notebooks, but be aware those resources may be rather scare outside North America.

  • Flash movie looks different in some IE8 browsers

    Hi All,
I have a website http://www.pestcontrolonline.com which looks fine in  firefox, safari etc, but in some versions of IE 8 or 9 the flash movie looks wrong or doesn't display.  For example the insect guide vertical scroller on the right hand side of the page goes out of alignment with the actual scroller scrolling out the top of the back ground image.
Also on the main page beneath the flash movie that shows the special offers is another flash movie that segments and rotates the image, on some browsers this doesn't show at all.
If the flash movies didn't show in any version of IE then i would assume that there was a problem cross browser wise, but in our office it shows on virtually all of our computers fine, except for two and all computers run the same browser version and connect to the internet via our company server.  I have tried several things including re inserting the flash movies, but nothing really changes.
Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully recieved.
    Thanks
    Lee

Altruistic, what happens when you click No? Does the error appear?
I ran the IE8 debugger to see if i could investigate further and I actually did not see the same thing you did.
I ran into problems with 3 things:
    jquery.min.js
    SpryData.js
It's reporting that certain variables are null or not objects
    tabsandaccordions.js
says "object does not support this property or method", referring to this:
         if($.cookie('/careercenter/menustate')) {           $('#menu').accordion('activate', $('#' + $.cookie('/careercenter/menustate')).parent('h3'));      };
Again, thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction. I'm really not sure what is going on. Is this something other than a compatibility issue?

  • Exported movie looks awful

Why does my type look fuzzy after I've exported it to QuickTime? I can't find anywhere that allows me to scale my movie before I export it so that it doesn't look pixelated when enlarged.
    Thanks in advance.

The quality of the QuickTime movie depends almost entirely on the settings you choose to export it. There are many different codecs you can choose to compress the movie, and for each codec the results depend on how much compression you impose.
To add to the difficulty, the text of a title is probably the most difficult kind of image to compress well, so it is hard to make it look right. Use bold-face fonts, not skinny fonts or fonts with lots of curly-cues. Then adjust your QuickTime export settings until the results are acceptable.
Here's a thread with some settings to try:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1757395
I can't find anywhere that allows me to scale my movie before I export it so
that it doesn't look pixelated when enlarged.
One doesn't normally enlarge a movie for the reasons you describe. Say more about that; there may be other playback solutions.
BTW, the H.264 codec mentioned in the other thread is especially good at letting you resize the movie during playback.

  • 4:3 movies look squishy, can I get 16:9 on a 4:3 TV?

I'm using an AppleTV converter (http://www.svideo.com/appletv2tv.html) which converts the component output to composite, so that I can use my older TV with S-Video inputs. The converter outputs to a 4:3 ratio (480i - 720x480), but all of my ripped movies are in 16:9, and look super squishy, as I don't have enhanced TV (854x480). I have my AppleTV set to 480i, and 480p doesn't work.
Any suggestions on getting a better ratio on my screen? I'm at work at the moment, and haven't tried any of the other settings on AppleTV.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the movies have been resized (or cropped). I simply run the movie through Handbrake, select the AppleTV preset, ensure that I have the correct audio & subtitles and anamorphic (PAR) set, and let it convert. What are you suggesting that the cropping be set to, so that I continue to get a 16:9 movie, instead of a squishy, elongated version in 4:3? The movies look great on my various Macs, iPod and iPhone (if I do them at a lower bitrate).

  • Good-looking quicktime movie looks crummy once burned to dvd

Hi. I made a cool home movie in Final Cut Express; exported it into a quicktime movie - looked good when I played it in quicktime. Then I burned it to a dvd-r (about 60 minutes of footage), and when I played the dvd on my dvd player on the tv, it looked crummy?
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

All sorts of advice, but we will need more specifics to be of more help. For one, define crummy. What version of QT and OS X? How was the movie exported from FCE? iDVD expects a DV file... if you exported out of FCE using some sort of compression (other than DV ) that isn't good. What was your source material?
