Compressing a FCP project to run on a Dell - I'm stumped!

I have an 11 minute video that I:
1. Exported to QT straight from FCP
2. Exported using Compressor with an H.264 800 kbps streaming setting
Both these play perfectly on my iMac, but they won't run at all on my client's Dell Inspiron. He has QT 7 and Windows Media Player.
What setting should I use? I can't buy Flip4Mac right now. I thought the h.264 would be universal. Is the problem that I selected streaming?
Thanks so much for the help!

use the download setting streaming is only for file hosted on qt streaming server. those files often work but its not what you are looking for. you are looking for Fast Start Download.

  • PROBLEM Compressing FCP PROJECT into file for DVDPRO

    **this is my information...**
I'm EXPORTING a FCP project which is 45 minutes in length. I EXPORT it to COMPRESSOR. COMPRESSOR opens and shows the FILE in up LEFT box where I drag Presets. It gives me the PROJECT NAME but in the little picture box it just shows the FCP ICON. I know when I EXPORT a QT movie of a FCP project, a frame of the project appears in the little box where I drag the presets. This time it doesn't. So I don't know if that's an issue. I'm using DVD preset "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes". It begins to compress the FCP file which takes roughly 2 hours. I check and it says it's "successful". BUT when I open DVDPRO and import the project to burn there is only ONE FILE not TWO FILES which would be the AUDIO and the VIDEO file. so DVDPRO does not recognize this and it won't burn. What do I do? THANKS for you help. Andy

Try exporting the sequence as a self-contained file using "current settings". This should result in one file with all the quality of what was on the timeline. Make sure this is in a folder located on your scratch (non-system) drive.
Then, open up Compressor, drag in the just created file, apply the "DVD best 90 minutes" preset making sure both the m2v and ac3 compressor actions are included and set the output directory to "Source".
    Let it run.
Do you have .m2v and .ac3 files located in the same folder as the original self contained .mov file when complete?

  • Need help in exporting my FCP project to work on my laptop

I'm taking a long trip and I'd like to export all that's needed to work on my FCP project from my PowerMac G5 to my Powerbook Pro. I could really use some advice on this.
    1. It's most likely that all of my files will not fit on the Powerbook hard drive (half is devoted to Windows). I know there are issues with importing footage to a firewire drive, but what if my footage is already imported? Can I get a tiny firewire external drive and move all my video files to work with? Or will I still be at a risk of dropped frames or other problems? Can I even get a USB drive for this? WD makes a great tiny one. I've got a huge Maxtor firewire drive, but I need one that is portable and doesn't need external power. Any recommendations? Is this just a stupid question and there's no way this is possible?
    2. Will I run into a problem of installing my Final Cut Studio on my Powerbook Pro since it's already installed on my PowerMac? I guess if I absolutely had to, I could uninstall FCP from my Powermac, then install it on my Powerbook, then uninstall it from my powerbook when i'm done with my trip, then reinstall it on my PowerMac. But it'd be much simpler if I could just install it on my Powerbook and leave the already installed version on my PowerMac alone.
I'd love some advice with this. Thanks!

First, do you mean Macbook Pro? Also what version of FCP are you running? If you have a Macbook Pro then you must have FCP 5.1 in order for it to run on your notebook.

You are correct in assuming that you need not put your media files on your system drive. Get a small Firewire drive that is bus powered, I recommend on from G-Technologies, maker of the G-Raid.
    2. Will I run into a problem of installing my Final

This depends on what version you are using. I believe that you can have 5.1 installed on both a desktop and notebook with one license. However, be sure to check the license that came with your software just to be sure. If you do not have 5.1 (and you don't have a MBP but instead a Powerbook (not Pro) then you will have to uninstall and reinstall.
Once you have these issues worked out it is a matter of transferring your project files to your new FW drive.

  • FCP Projects Converted To .m2v In Compressor Are Not Accepted ?

Normally I export my FCP projects as QuickTime Movies and drop them into iDVD 08.
I have just exported to Compressor and ended up with a .m2v and a .ac3 file which work in Toast and DVD Studio Pro but cannot be dropped into the iDVD window.
    They jump straight out !
I have also tried importing them via the File menu with no success.
What am I doing wrong ?
I have just searched the iDVD Help menu again and discovered this:-
"MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files, QuickTime VR movies, and movies with sprite or Flash tracks cannot be added".
Does that mean that my .m2v files (which I believe are MPEG-2) will not work and the best I can do is to export from FCP as QT Movie ?
Message was edited by: Ian R. Brown

That is what it means. iDVD will not accept pre-encoded files. However, I would be curious to know why you would want to use iDVD when you have and know how to use DVD Studio Pro? IMHO, on big disadvantage to iDVD is that it doesn't use AC3 or compressed audio, it uses uncompressed PCM.

  • Can't open fcp project file - fcp not responding

starts to open project but gets to 23% and freezes fcp...project is being stored on a lacie 250gig protable hd with firewire. never had this issue after tons of work. tried going to a autosave version but tried several and they freeze up fcp
any ideas short of moving all the media to another drive and starting a new project (I was just about to start cutting this project today).

    Welcome to the forum!
Post the version of FCP you're running.
Try opening a new project file, then importing the captured clips into it... might fix this... If you trash your preferences for FCP found in the user/library/preferences/FCP User data folder, you can just click on the application and it won't try to open the last project file.
Can you open earlier project files OK?

  • Multiple FCP projects presets saving in original settings

I have multiple FCP projects running on seperate hard disks. Each disk is 2TB for video content. For example Project X is on 1st disk & Project Y is on 2nd disk.
Issue I'm having is when setting the capture presets, etc for X, they are on disk 1. However when I go to disk 2 to work on Y, the presets are now set to disk 1! I can't have the presets for Y landing in X cause when I store X on a back up drive, the Y project spends forever trying to find all the "off line" info.
I need all the presets for each project to stay with that project and drive. So no matter when I open a project, no matter what drive it's on, all the info stays with that project and not another project. I've had this problem for years and it's a pain in the *** trying to keep my projects seperated since more & more are running at the same time.
I actually have (3) 2TB drives for individual projects and a 500GB Main drive for my applications.
Is there a way to have mutiple FCP projects on seperate drives, without having to constantly keep changing the presets so one project doesn't overlap to the another project.

My experience is that you have to change your presets and where your scrach drive is going. So when working on project X save to drive 1. and on project Y save to drive 2. Then reset your presets when switching projects. I agree this is a pain but it is the only way I have found. Just keep doing what you have been doing. Let me know if you find a solution for this.

  • FCP Project to Adobe Flash

I've been asked to provide a completed FCP project to a web administrator who operates only in Adobe Flash. Mine is a 720p 16:9 project -- his environment is 4:3 sometimes as dial-up speeds. :--(
Should I deliver just a Quicktime file? Should I deliver my project via Compressor in H.264? Best suggestions, please. Thanks very much.

    David:
For Flash Video (at least up to version 8), developers have to compress to Flash standards. Usually that's OnV2, or Sorenson Spark. I think 9 and 10 have newer compressions and even HD. I'm not sure if it's h.264 as I work in Flash 8.
Either way, it'll work best with the best master you can give. So, if you have a DVCPROHD, HDV, or whatever file you can give him it'll look best when he imports/compresses the file for Flash. You would do this through the "export quicktime" command rather than "export using quicktime conversion" command in the export menu. Make sure he resizes it upon import and not in his flash project. You can import and resize to fit your project. If you resize it using the "transform" tool in Flash it can tend to get jagged. Flash doesn't seem to "soften" video you change dimensions on with the "transform" tool, but it does if you resize while compressing.
Another option, to keep the transit size down, is to compress it to flash for him. But, that'd require Flash on your system. Not sure if you have it, but you can export it via quicktime if you do. The new file will have a .flv extension and he can simply import that to the Flash library for his project.
    Hope that helps.

  • FCP project sounds a little fast.

I opened up my FCP project(running latest version of FCP Studio 2) and the audio sounded a little fast, like it was rushing a bit. The picture played along in sync. I played it a couple of days ago and the tempo seemed fine. What might be causing it to race?

Funny thing and I thought this had happened before: although the computer had been on for a while, the FCP project had just been opened this morning. While it ran fast this morning, and leaving the FCP open all day (while I shopped for goodies for the 4th of July), I played the movie from the FCP timeline and it sounded "back to normal" in regard to audio speed. Since the media is spread out over several drives, maybe it had to be "woke up" a bit. As the project is only about 65 per cent done, I won't be trashing preferences just yet(did that once in the past and don't want to do that again!). And after it is completed and color corrected. I will consider the latest Quicktime update as well. I will export from the timeline when the project is done using the existing version 7.6, then install the latest and see if that makes a difference too.

  • FCP Project Files are all "invalid format?"

I tried uploading many FCP Project Files with no success. All Project Files run fine in Final Cut Pro.
Once the upload process begins, the "Jobs in Progress" status spins for about a minute or so. At this point a red exclamation point appears, then a popup window that states:
"Unable to Analyze Project ... Invalid Format."
The project file makes it's way into FC Server as a listed asset, however when I choose to "get Info" and do a Search for the associated project files, nothing shows up. The manual mentions or recommends to use file extensions, and I have.
I read Final Cut Server is supposed to automatically recognize all FCP Project file's associated media. In fact they don't need to be packaged in a folder, etc.
Lastly I created a brand new FCP Project with a single video clip and a single audio clip after I installed the new ProApps Update. Still no luck.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue?
    Thanks.
    -paul.

    Paul:
I experience the exact same issue, yesterday and thought that after Apple released the following update
    http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/FinalCut_Studio_2.0rn/
that things may work, but they still dont.
My guess, is that there may be a version update to Final Cut 6.0.3 to maybe Final Cut 6.5 or something that will allow this direct integration with Final Cut Server. However, note, I was able to success import Final Cut Project exported as Final Cut XML files. I tried this because this was traditionally how it work when FCServer was the Artbox product. My guess is because the Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Server engineers in Apple really don't speak direct to each other, FCServer was realeased with this bug.

  • FCP project file crashes before even opening

I am working for a client and using there system which is a G4 iMac running OS 10.4.11 and I am editing using FCP Studio 2, FCP 6.0.4
The quick is I am trying to open a project which recently has been taking forever to load and just recently crashes Final Cut Pro once it opens, which prevents me to work on it further, I was able to open it once long enough to copy the files into a new FCP project but after I saved and restarted FCP from the new Project folder I got the same result. I have tried going back into my auto save vault and open old files but I get the same result. I am able to open other FCP projects so I don't think it is a problem with FCP but more so with this particular file. ok so maybe that was the long version, please can any one offer any solutions or is all lost?
    thanks

It slow t load while “Reading Project” this is a photo based project actually its all photos. a time laps of over a month or more taking pictures everyday at approx 1 pic every hour or 30 mins. so I have alot of photos in the FCP project file. this i can understand for the slow loading time. but what is causing the FCP project to crash so often? i did try emptying the preference files but still no luck.

  • Backup MDC makes my fcp projects corrupt

When my MDC went down (someone turnet it OFF!!!), the backup mdc was in control. Everything played along nicely, except for one major problem. All fcp projects saved to the san were corrupt. They looked ok, had the correct filetype and size was ok, but I got "Cannot open project file" when I tried to open the saved files. Getting the MDC up and running AND doing a restart on the macs, solved the problem. Any idea why this happened ??
Xsan 1.4 and 10.4.7 on the servers.

I've seen similar behaviour from different G5s, when in charge of the SAN. Without wanting to anthropomorphize them, I think each one has its own personality. Isn't that helpful? How about your logs? Did anything show up on the backup MDC when it was in control?

  • Additional videofiles in FCP project not uploaded to FCSVR

I have a strange problem when I try to upload a FCP project file into Final Cut Server. If the project has videofiles that aren't yet in Final Cut Server the're not uploaded as assets. Instead when I open the project in Final Cut Server I see an unlinked media asset. I can't remember I've had this problem before.
Running FCP 6.05 & Final Cut Server 1.1.1

Is your server logged in as the admin account used to install FCS? A bit strange I know, but that was my problem. Once I kept my server logged in as the admin account, it was golden.

  • Burning a FCP project in iDVD?

I would like to burn a FCP project to DVD using iDVD but cannot seem to import the project...when I open iDVD, and select open existing project, none of my FCP projects can be selected.  Is there another way I should be doing this? Should I be using DVD Studio Pro? Thanks!

    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG

Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Recovered FCP projects won't open.

I've recently used Stellar Phoenix to recover data from my hard drive, which was successful, but now the FCP project files won't open, even if i force FCP to read it. It just gives me "Error: Wrong file type".
The files that wont work are Final Cut Pro files. Files that do work are Pro Tools
Other files that were recovered work ok (.mov quicktime files).
I've seen threads on other forums of people who have had the same problem, it wasnt resolved. Has anyone here had/heard of this problem?
    Thanks

Ok, so we have the final cut pro project file open now. The file type changer did work in the end..but now we have a different problem.
All the media files that FCP wants to link to are there, but it will only find about 30% of them. The rest are "Media Offline". I've tried going through "reconnect media" and finding the files manually, but FCP just won't load them. It doesn't even give me an error message, it just doesn't do anything when i select the files and click ok. I also have to change it to see All Files rather than just audio or video. But..When I find the files in finder, I can append the video files with .mov, and they run fine in quicktime, and i can do the same with the audio files... Also, the file Type and Creator tags are the same on videos that FCP can read and the ones it can't read.Any thoughts? I have tried everything i can think of.
    Thanks again!
