Compressing DVD files

I have used MactheRipper to save some DVD movies to my hard drive. Can anyone suggest some software that will compress these files to take up less space on my hard drive?

If you have the quicktime mpeg2 playback component installed (automatcially installed if you have Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express, I believe) then get mpegstreamclip.
If you don't have the mpeg2 component and don't want to buy it to use mpegstreamclip, which, IMO, is the best utility for this, then I'd recommend FFMPEGX.

  • COMPRESSOR will not compress DVD files adequately

This is a weird one.   I'm using compressor to encode files for DVD studio pro.  However, no matter what file I plug into compressor and no matter what DVD compression settings/data rates I choose, compressor will not compress the files small enough to fit on the DVD.
    Any ideas?

Yeah, it should fit no problem.
Try a CBR setting at around 7mbps... it will compress much faster and it will be of higher quality than a VBR setting.

what player do you intend to use? That is what I am wanting to check.. you understand there is no itunes server in the TC..
BTW if you want to use the TC in your car/SUV.. convert it to 12v operation.

  • Compress Video_TS files?

    Hey everyone,
I was wondering if there was any Freeware out there that will help me compress video_TS files.
If so, where do I look?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Do you mean like Stuffit type app? Usually files are fairly compressed to begin with, you are better off getting extra HDs or DVDs, unless really pressed for space, compressing/decompressing large files (DV etc.) will not save that much room compared to the time. I have tried and still do, but usually waiting to get 4 Gigs to 3.8 Gigs ain't worth it ( I have not gotten Stuffit 10 or some of the newer things, Toast does okay also to some degree, but not huge space savings)

  • K3b compressed dvd and uncompressed data

Using k3b to burn .isoDVD R/W media results in a usable DVD of the Knoppix Live CD type.
Can the same media be burned again with uncompressed data in the unused portion of the media using k3b?
If so, what setup is required to do so?
If this be possible, then it would seem possible to symlink to the uncompressed files and extend the compressed file capability to include the files on the uncompressed portion.
Alternatively, the symlink could address additional compressed format files and thereby extend the basic Live CD to full size DVD capability.  This would be faster in execution (on-the-fly decompressed).
A symlink seems the useful tool......

    Hi,
Yes, both Compressed and Uncompressed data will be displayed in reports. Compression activity is to save the memory space in your database.
Its not mandatory to compress the whole requests till date in cube.
You can specify the request(desired request) in Collapse tab and release for compression.
Suppose if you have requests from 1st Juky to till date, you specified the 9th July Request in the Collapse tab, then from 1st July to 9th July requests will be compressed. It will not consider from 1st July to till date.

  • Compressing Video files to be used in Studio Pro projects

I have a 2hr and 7min video I'm trying to burn to a DVD. It is too large for a single layer and I've been having trouble with burning dual layer discs. Has anyone had any success using Apple Compressor to compress video files that were just a little too large for a single layer disc? What format did you use. I've tried several already and have managed to shave off a few 100 MB but not quite enough. The project uncompressed takes up about 5.7GB in Studio Pro and obviously it needs to be down below 4.7GB. Thanks for any help.

Compressor has a few presets, to compress so that 90, 120, or 150 minutes of video will fit into a single layer disc. I think those are making the assumption that you use the Dolby 2.0 AC3 option as well as the MPEG-2 one. So, if you take your video through compressor and choose the 150 minute preset to make MPEG-2 and AC3, and take those two files into DVDSP, you should easily fit 2 hours and 7 minutes onto a single layer disc.
If you want to squeeze as much quality out of the space as you can, and you're troubled by ending up with a little bit of disc space because you chose the 150 minute preset, you can tweak the settings. To do that open the Presets window, expand the Apple folder and the best quality 120 minutes sub folder, and drag the MPEG-2 5.0Mbps 2-pass 4:3 entry down into the Custom folder. Go into the Custom folder in the Presets window and double-click on the copy of that preset you just made.
An inspector palette opens up. Click on the second of the icons and you'll see settings for the video compression. Click the Quality tab and in there you can tweak the figures. Changing the 5.0 average to 4.7 should be enough to make it just fit 127 minutes. Save those changes, and then when you add your video to the batch list, select your modified setting as the one to use when it compresses the video.

  • I keep getting error message "not enough space on startup disk" on my macbook 10.6, even though I've deleted and compressed many files. Could something else be the problem?

Somehow 1500 web pages were downloaded into my iphone app! That's when the trouble began Now, I keep gettig error message"not enough  room on your start up disc. "So I deleted most of theml, but when I compress/delete files, it doesn't help. Now i'm unable to back up to a disc, because I get a similar message about lack of room.. I can't download apple updates or printer updates. My computer is almost unusable. When I took it to the Apple store they had no idea what was wrong.
I bought an external hard drive-Free Agent Go Flex which doesn't seen to function, and has no user interface and apparently little tech support. My cursor is all over the place. No one at Apple seems to be able to fix this computer. Any suggestions for my next move?

    Hi,
We are trying to zip / compress a xml file that has been created by retrieving data from SQL Server 2008 R2 database running on Windows Server 2008.
To compress this file, we cannot use any external softwares like 7-zip or WinZip.
So, we would like to know if there is any windows default compression tool that works on command line to compress the file?
As this is a live server we cannot apply any other softwares.
Please suggest any ways to do it in Windows Server 2008 machine.

My IPod no longer shuffles songs within playlists that are clearly set to shuffle.  It is about 3/4 full so I thought of maybe compressing the files to get more space.  Do you think that is the problem and if that might help?

Storage space on the iPod would not affect shuffled playlists or playlist shuffling, though substantially full iPods may wind up skipping songs on larger playlists after a while, and require a restart.  As for compressing the files themselves, you can automatically re-encode files to a lower bitrate by checking the box on the summary page when your iPod is connected to your PC/Mac.
As for the shuffle problem, after restarting your iPod (hold the center button and Menu for a few seconds, until the Apple logo appears), make sure you're telling the iPod to shuffle the songs in a playlist by repeatedly clicking the center button until the Suffle Menu comes up, then scroll to the right to turn it on.  From that song forward, the playlists' contents should be shuffled every time the playlist ends, or is accessed from a new song.
Shuffle does sometimes turn itself off, I've found, so double-check the setting is still on.  Also, iPods shuffle by randomly assigning a playlist order for your songs, which is different from traditional shuffle (on, say, iTunes or Windows Media Player, where the new song is determined at random upon the current track ending.  The iPod only chooses a random order of songs when you shuffle, to conserve battery life and queue up songs coming up on the playlist in the event of a shock).

  • When i send a file over iChat to another mac it compresses the file, where is this compressed file stored?

Today i was transfering a few folders with pictures and videos over to another mac and I noticed that before i sent the file iChat would compress it.  Now this is understandable because they were fairly large files, over 2GB, and this would make them transfer faster.  The problem is that I was transfering the files because my mac is low on hard drive space and I was trying to free some up.  By compressing the files first it was using up more space on my hard drive and I quickly cancelled the compression.  I soon realized though that my hard drive space was still disappearing into thin air. I only had 6GB left and was running out fast.  As it reached 2GB I began to quickly delete large files I no longer needed hoping that I wouldn't run out of space. It dropped all the way down to 12.4MB before it finally stopped, even with me deleting files.  I'm not quite sure what was happening to all of my hard drive space, but was wondering if maybe iChat continued to compress the files even after I cancelled the compression.  Anyways if anyone knows why this happened or where iChat stores the files it compresses that would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I have heard of this before.
One report suggested it was only PDF files their case.
I cannot replicate it with any pic files (Over 2Gb) PDF or otherwise or files and folders combos.
My tests were from Lion/iChat 6.0.3 to Snow Leopard (iChat 5.0.3)
I would have thought iChat would have created the Zippped/Stuffed files in the same folder as the original items
(i.e pic in the pictures folder (or relevant subfolder) and other files and documents in the Documents folder.
With any application that does Stuffing/Zipping it will create temporary space for doing so.
Much like the way a graphics app creates a Scratch file to keep the 20 or so Undos it works with.  (with graphic Apps you can make the Scratch file on another Drive if you have one which can help)
    Do this:-
with iChat Open go to the Window Menu.
    Select the File transfers item
In this Window (that pops up) select the File that was going to be Transferred.
When it is highlighted then do a Right-Click or Control Click and select the option to Show in Finder
Does it list the zipped file ?

  • How to compress my files and folders, How to compress my files and folders

    Good morning,
My name is Jai Bhandari and I am from London, UK.
I am sending this out to everyone that can help me to compress my files and folders, as I believe my macbook pro is starting to freeze and caused by having a slow machine, is there anyone that can suggest to me how and what do I use to compress these files into one folder.
Thank you for reading this and hope to hear from you soon.
    Many regards
    Jai

You can 'compress' files and folders from the Finder by selecting the items and choosing File>Compress "selected file or folder". This will create a zip archive and will save you some space. (I just tried it on a 16GB folder and it compressed it to an 11GB zip file). After you zip the file/folder the original can be deleted )until you need to access it again, then you can just double-click the zip file).
If you're trying to free up disk space on your hard drive, this is not the best method... but you didn't ask about that...

  • How do I compress Wav files

Hi, I have some sound files that I want to be able to email to people, but I can't because the files are too big. Is there a way to compress these files(wav)?

You may refer to the following there method to compress WAV files
Method 1: Compress WAV to other audio format
Compress WAV to lossless compression audio format without losing audio quality like compress WAV to FLAC, compress WAV to Apple Lossless ALAC M4A
Compress WAV to lossy audio format like compress WAV to MP3, compress WAV to WMA, AAC, RA and etc.
Method 2: Lower WAV bit rate
With this method, we can easily reduce WAV file size without changing WAV audio format.
The lower the bit rate, the smaller the WAV file size, the lower quality of the WAV audio.
In most cases, WAV audio quality shows little difference between 128kbps and higher bitrates. WAV quality will become crappier if the bit rate is less than 128kbps.
Method 3: Compress WAV to other audio format as well as lower bit rate
The third way to compress a WAV file size is that we simultaneously apply Method 1 as well as Method 2.
