Compressing files (almost same size as original)...?

hello.
Anytime i have to compress a file, in order to quickly send it over email, i right click on the file that needs to be compressed, and then i choose "compress". I then get a zip file that is barely smaller than the original file (from 7.8MB to 7.2MB), which makes compression almost pointless.
So i figured that its just because i'm using the generic stock file compression application, whatever that is..... so i decided to download stuffit expander.
But i get the same result whether i compress it into a .zip file, or a .sitx file.
I'm so confused, but i'm sure this is something very simple. Am i misunderstanding the whole concept of what file compresison is?
I know that this is such an elementary question, but thanks for your time.
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks!!

ah, ok. I totally understand.
I was trying to compress an mp3, which is already a compressed format.
Sorry for my lack of knowledge.
Yet, I will also be needing to compress scanned text documents in jpg format.
I assume i will have the same issue because jpgs are already compressed formatsas well?

  • Why is DV and HDV files the same size?

Why is DV and HDV files the same size?
One 60min tape of DV is around 10gb and a 60 min tape of HDV is also 10-11 GB
    Why the same size?

A working number to calculate file sizes is 3.62 mb/sec for both DV and HDV. HDV can vary somewhat as it is compression dependent.
    3.62 mb/sec = 13.03 gb/hr

  • Scanned form not same size as original

I am trying to scan a form into pdf and make it a fill-in form, then print only the form field info onto an original of the form. When I do so, the fields are out of alignment because the scanned form doesn't seem to be the same size.
Is there anyway to make the scanned form the same size as the original when I scan it.
Many Thanks to all that reply......

Depends on what software you are using to scan and produce the form fields. It's not Reader.

  • Exporting same size as original?

I have a 15 MB MPG file which I bring into Premiere and match it's settings. Then I cut it down from one hour to just 45 minutes. When I exported, the file is over 150 MB. I think I am using the lowest compression settings possible but am I wrong? Could you recommend some settings I should be using or a different method?
    Thanks!

Our point is that 15mb is an extraordinarily small file for  the original 60 minutes.
100MB is still small for 55 minutes and hence the quality hit.

File size is determined by only two things.  Bitrate and duration.
    Its fact.
When I exported, the file is over 150 MB. I think I am using the lowest compression settings possible but am I wrong?
You want the highest compression settings for small file size and the lowest for best quality.

  • Exported audio is same size of original video, after video'ss been cut

I have a 1.2GB video file, and its audio file is about 500MB. If I cut the video into pieces in iMovie, they get smaller, but the extracted audio piece is always 500MB. Is there any way around this ?
Is it possible to split a video in QuickTime ? I want to use all of the video, just have it in shorter pieces preïmport so that once they're in iMovie their extracted audio won't be the size of the original audio track.

Er, sorry, I meant extracted. (Wasn't thinking, going from French to English, and I can't edit post now too.)
    So, the extracting's in iMovie...

  • Compressing file without loosing size or quality

Illustrator CS3 - AI 13.0 - need to compress a file or it's components to under 500K from a current 2.53 MB size and maintain full page viewing capabilities and quality. Will be placed on a real estate web site for broker/realtor viewing. Using a Dell PC, operating with Windows Vista.

Ask a few more times, why don't you?
The size of your Illustrator file is irrelevant to the size of the file you need to supply. EIther save your art using File > Save for Web (for a JPEG) or use File > Save a Copy (for PDF) and try different compression/resolution combinations until the size is under 500 KB and the quality is acceptable. For PDF also turn of Preserve Illustrator Editing Capability.
It is odd that a website would ask for either a PDF or JPEG. the two formats serve different functions and are viewed differently on a website. JPEG images appear in-line with text within the layout of a web page. PDF files are either downloaded and viewed in a separate program or viewed in their own window entirely apart from the HTML of the website. The formats are not interchangeable, so you are probably misunderstanding the requirements.

  • Converting PDF to JPEG--tiny file, not full size image.

    using photoshop cs3
End result is I want a jpeg of the same size as original. here is what i do and what happens.
open pdf in photoshop; save as "jpeg"
jpeg shrinks to an inch wide, from an original 8.5 inches.
I've tried saving with compression off, saving pdf in various formats, nothing seems to work and my jpegs always save out very tiny.
any help would be appreciated! thanks.

I opened the file I attached to my mail in Photoshop and that's when it went small. I just looked on Apple forum and found a little button on the bottom right that was compressing the file. I hit "actual size" and have fixed the problem.
It was a Mail problem, (or my problem:) not Photoshop or PDF.
Thanks for your time and response...

  • Compressed files

can somebody explain a little bit to me about compressed files please. Obviously they r smaller but how much space do they take up? for example if i am copying dvds using toast and i chose to compress it as a .dmg file, how big is the file? also if i want to compress a folder with .wmv files in it, then i to watch them i must expand them first, but are they the same size as a .dmg file? Basically i am asking if it is worth compressing lots of stuff like movies to save space on my hard disc or is this only done for sharing files over a network or the internet?

    Hi John,
Basically i am asking if it is worth compressing lots of *_stuff like movies_* to save space on my hard disc or is this only done for sharing files over a network or the internet?
Movies, sounds and images are typically already compressed. Movies especially are normally always compressed to start with, and trying to compress them further can actually result in the 'new compressed' file being larger than the original.
So to answer your main question, there's no point compressing your movies in an attempt to save space.
can somebody explain a little bit to me about compressed files please. Obviously they r smaller but how much space do they take up?
It completely depends on the original file in question so it's impossible to give a definitive answer. Text-based files will generally compress very well, sometimes 90% smaller. Most images formats already use compression algorithms to store the pictures so rarely will you see much saving in space when compressing them. Applications are a combination of binary program files, text resources and image files so compression of them tends to be somewhere in the middle.
DMG doesn't compress a file, it's simply a container for storing other files (which themselves may be compressed).
    Hope some of that helps

  • Compressing file size from within a portfolio?

I've got 16 files within a PDF portfolio ranging from 80MB to 227Mb and I'm trying to compress them, the portfolio size is 1.41GB.  When I view the file size in Bridge as I compress each file I don't see any change in the individual file sizes nor in the Portfolio size.  Are the original files being compressed or are they stored seperately within the portfolio file?  And any idea why the portfolio size nor the original file sizes are changing after PDF optimization?

    Thanks, Leo.
To my mind, this looks about right : http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/pdfgenerator/
Do you know whether this will be suitable for integration into .net code?
Can it cover our needs (Concatenation, Compression, Bookmark-Editing)?

  • Require 9i Primary and Standby redo logs files same size?

    Hi,
We have 9.2.0.6 Oracle RAC (2 node) and configured data guard (physical standby).
I want to increase redo log files size, but i can't this do same time primary and standby side.
Is there a rule, primary and standby database instances have same size redo log files?
If I increase only primary redo log files, is there any side effect? However I try this issue on test system. I increased all primary redo log files(if status='INACTIVE' drop redo log group and add redo log group, switch logfile,...)
, but i couldn't changed standby side. So the system is work well. Is this correct solution or not? How can i increase both sides redo log files?
    Thank you for helps..

Thank you for your helps.. I found this issue answer:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/manage_ps.htm#i1010448
Consequently, when you add or drop an online redo log file at the primary site, it is important that you synchronize the changes in the standby database by following these steps:
If Redo Apply is running, you must cancel Redo Apply before you can change the log files.
If the STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT initialization parameter is set to AUTO, change the value to MANUAL.
Add or drop an online redo log file:
To add an online redo log file, use a SQL statement such as this:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE '/disk1/oracle/oradata/payroll/prmy3.log' SIZE 100M;
To drop an online redo log file, use a SQL statement such as this:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE DROP LOGFILE '/disk1/oracle/oradata/payroll/prmy3.log';
Repeat the statement you used in Step 3 on each standby database.
Restore the STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT initialization parameter and the Redo Apply options to their original states.
    bye..

  • Creating PDF the same size as the original

I have a TIF created in Photoshop CS2 and I'm trying to create a PDF that's the same size as the original (3 x 2 inches). What is the secret? I'm pretty sure I've done this before, but I can't figure out what to select for Paper Size to make this happen. Thanks for the help!

Try opening the TIF file in Acrobat directly. I just opened a TIFF file and it came out 2.74 X 1.00. IrfanView says the TIFF is 2.7 X 0.4. It looks like the opening added a bit of height to the file, but the right idea.

  • Advice for modifying a compressed file without expanding its size?

Hello. Fairly new to video editing, so your advice is appreciated.
I've got a 720x480 WMV3 .AVI video clip which runs about 1/2 hour at a rate of 666kbps. The file size is about 75MB.
In trying to adjust the brightness/contrast on the file and resave it, the file sizes for different formats all shoot way up. The file has a heavy amount of compression to start with. My thinking is that 'high-quality' settings within a codec will actually store too much information, while 'low-quality' settings will further compress the file and result in loss of quality.
Is there any rule of thumb to dealing with an already-compressed file, editing it, and resaving it (without a significant loss of quality) and without greatly increasing file size?
    Thanks in advance,
    John

    John,
You are starting with a heavily-compressed file, the WMV, so original data has been lost.
When you output your Timeline, you will again need to apply heavy-compression, to keep the file size down, and also experiment with the Bit-Rate.
The only aspects, that will address file size, is Duration (pretty much already set), and Bit-Rate. The lower the Bit-Rate, the smaller the file, BUT at the expense of Quality. As you have already taken a hit on Quality, with the initial WMV compression, and you will loose even more Quality, when your re-compress, you need to study the output files, to make sure that they are still satisfactory for delivery.
If you can do the editing required in Windows Movie Maker, it might be a better program to use, as it is built around the WMV specs. Not sure if it has the Effects and control that you need, however.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Two machines saving the same file as different sizes?

My coworker and I both have the same version of Illustratir (CS6) and both use Lion on iMacs, but today noticed something weird. He saved a file similar to a file I had done before as both an eps and a pdf and his file size was more than twice what my file sizes usually are. I thought it was odd, so I copied everything from his file into a new file (same dimensions) and saved out an eps and pdf (default settings), and like I thought, my files were less than half the size of his.
Why would two machines be saving identical files at different sizes? Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing? Everything in the file is vector, if it matters. There's not even any editable text.

See the mechanism of saving here: http://superuser.com/questions/66825/what-is-the-difference-between-size-and-size-on-disk
The size of the "blocks" depends on the size of the disk and how it's been formatted.
