Compressing files from CD

How do I compress files that I've saved to iTunes from CD? They are taking up lots of space on the iPod.

You need to convert them to a different format then update your iPod. Converting creates duplicate files in iTunes so you will either have to delete the larger ones or alternatively create a playlist specifically for the iPod that contains the compressed ones. If you go for a playlist, the simplest thing to do to manage the iPod would be to change the update setting to "automatically update selected playlists only" and select your list of compressed songs:
How to convert a song to a different format
For info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Reading a Compressed File from a ZIP File, which is an entry of ZIP File

    Hello, Experts,
Would it be possible somebody to help me with code example for the following problem?
I want to read a compressed file from a ZIP file, which is an entry of ZIP File, without extacting/writing files on file system. Is this possible?
Lets say we have a ZipFile1. There is ZipFile2 inside ZipFile1. And inside ZipFile2 is FileA. The scenario is reading FileA without extracting on file system.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Cheers
    RADY

The classes you want to be using are java.util.zip.ZipInputStream and and ZipEntry from the same package. Construct the ZipInputStream with the input you have for the outer zip. Loop with ZipInputStream.getNextEntry until you find the inner zip you're looking for - that method returns a ZipEntry, and you get the name of the zip entry with ZipEntry.getName. Read the ZipInputStream from that point into some buffer, and read that buffer into a new ZipInputStream - rinse and repeat until you have the contents of the file in the zip in the zip...

  • How to read compressed files from unix on 10gR2 EE?

We have large historical data stored as text files on operating system and compressed because our free disk space is very limited. Rarely because of data quality or legal needs we need to read these information.
So I thought of unix pipes(mknod), reading while uncompressing through a pipe similar to this example; http://www.orafaq.com/faqunix.htm#EXPORT
but this method is very slow.
Is it possible to SELECT these compressed files, maybe a custom Oracle driver for external tables you may heard of?
    Thank you.

There are no oracle drives to read from an external zipped file. You could uncompress the file to a named pipe and read the sqlloader from the pipe:
    $ mknod fifo.dat p
$ uncompress the file and redirect it to the > fifo.dat & #pseudocode
Let SQLLDR read from the Named Pipe:
    sqlldr userid=scott/tiger control=load.ctl data=fifo.dat
It isn't guaranteed to be faster, just convenient for you not to uncompress the complete file prior to perform the sqlload operation.

  • Compressing File from Media Composer to Burn to DVD

I've got a project that was shot on a Canon GL-2 Standard Definition Camera in 16:9 Anamorphic (Shot in a 4:3 Frame then the software readapts it to 16:9. I've figured out how to get compressor to properly display it in 16:9 however the issue I have now is when I burn the DVD the image rips with motion.
Thus I believe there to be an issue with Interlacing. So I'm wondering what the best way to fix this would be? I'm exporting from Avid as a Quicktime Reference then putting that into Compressor and using the 120 Best Quality DVD Pre-Set modified to display the video file in 16:9

I think it could be an issue with how Compressor interacts with the Avid codec. I question if Compressor was ever designed to do this. I haven't had a lot of success with older SD Avid movies being converted for FC to use in edit and then having them look great.
Although the file will be huge you may want to export another format from Avid that would be more friendly for Compressor. Besides H264 I'm not sure what that would be but I would suggest trying a 1 minute test with some of the more complex footage.

  • How do I get the compressed files from MPEG streamline into Final Cut Pro X?

I'm on a deadline and I'm sitting here stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

    Streamclip is a converter tool.
    FCPX is an editor.
so, what do you want to accomplish? or, is the question?
If you like to convert any sources, choose in Streamclips' many export settings the codecs corresponding to your Project settings in FCPX, probably proRes + resolution + framerate ....

  • How to compress file to 100MB limit

    Hello,
Please advise how do I compress file from FCP to 100MB .mov file.
At the moment I am using a H.264 codec, under High setting, one pass
By the size exceed the 100MB limit.
Please does anyone come across this before?
    Thank you

You only gave one variables for your video, 100MB limit. One need at least 2 variables (of 3) to know what size a given video will be.
    Duration
    File size
    or
    Data Rate.....
Here download this free program to help you determine how to get your video under the 100 MB limit.

It's free and works great. There is a help section under the help menu to tell you how to use the program.

  • Compressing files so everyone can open them

I use a MacBook Pro and compress files (right click, compress) for upload to a site called Teachers pay Teachers. Users who download my files often complain that they can't unzip/un-compress and access and the files.  Some say they are password protected.  I also own Acrobat Pro XI.  I've beed told that files I created with my newer software can't be opened by users with older versions.  I need a foolproof method for compressing files so every person can download the contents.  Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for the reply.  I know I should be able to simply compress in zip format but I have had several bad reviews based solely on the fact that people can't unzip my files compressed and uploaded from my MacBook Pro.  I never had complaints from using my old PC.  I am just frustrated since I really strive for great feedback.  I even created a document to help people http://www.mrsrenz.net/HelpforPurchasers.pdf run their computers.  I believe it is operator error but I am questioning why I only have this trouble with my new software and Mac.
I only mentioned Acrobat Pro since it's also a new program and am trying to eliminate the cause.
Do you know if I can compress files from a Mac using another program that is foolproof rather than using right click, compress?  I am considering using DropBox and uploading all files from my PC (which is super frustrating).  I don't eaunderstand why users would say my files are password protected.  The company (Teachers pay Teachers) confirmed the issue is not on my end but I want all users to have no trouble using work they've purchsed from me.
    I really appreciate your help.

  • How to compress video files from 10.0.8?

I need to compress my videos to share them on Dropbox. In the share options, I only get the file to be reduced from 149 MB down to 95 MB. How can I reduce it more to better share it and use in teaching? (I need to embedd three short videos in a Power Point, now it takes about 20 minutes to upload it).
On different forums, it's described how you can export the files to Quick Time to reduce file size without changing the quality and some speak of using Compressor, however, I can't find any of this in iMovie 10.0.8.
Are there any app's you recommend using?
Appreciate all the help I can get :-)

    Hi Vishu Thakur,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you want to move videos from your computer to your iPad Air and are trying to use Home Sharing to move the files. The process of moving files from your computer to your iPad is called syncing and would use iTunes to actually move the files from iTunes to the iPad. The article attached explains the process.

  • Compress/zip files from the command line in Windows 7?

In Windows 7 is there a native way to compress or zip files from the command line?  I'd like to do it without installing any third-party utilities such as 7Zip.

I fully agree that Compact is not the answer. There are additional concerns with the Compact command. It enables disk compression which is a total no-no. Very bad! It makes your computer very slow and is quite difficult to undo. The only time anyone should
use this command is when they're removing disk compression because someone turned it on to save space.  Turning this off has to be done by booting into the recovery console, if my memory serves me correctly, and it's a real nuisance.  So
definitely no to the Compact command.
If you wanted to compress files before sending them to another drive, or over a network, or by email, then Compact wouldn't actually help at all because the files have to get uncompressed whenever they're accessed, especially before sending them anywhere.
When I say accessed, I mean that just looking at a file triggers the OS to decompress it in the background and present you with an uncompressed version of it then letting you change it and recompressing it again for storage every single time you access the
file, which is why your machine gets slower.  If you have folders or files that have blue text instead of black, then you've probably already made this mistake.
I would also like to know if there is a built-in command for zipping files/directories, or, if there isn't such a thing built into Windows, then I would like to know if this is feature is accessible through Visual Studio, which would be just as good as having
a command-line program for those of us that do a bit of programming.
If anyone knows if MS provides such a feature, either by command-line or through an API, then I'd love to hear about it.  Good luck to those of you that have disk compression turn on.

  • IMPORT & EXPORT from/to compressed files directly...

for newbies a tip to import(export) directly to(from) compressed files using pipes . Its for Unix based systems only, as I am not aware of any pipe type functionality in Windows. The biggest advantage is that you can save lots of space as uncompressing a file makes it almost 5 times or more. (Suppose you are uncompressing a file of 20 GB, it will make 100 GB) As a newbie I faced this problem, so thought about writing a post.
Lets talk about export first. The method used is that create a pipe, write to a pipe(ie the file in exp command is the pipe we created), side by side read the contents of pipe, compress(in the background) and redirect to a file. Here is the script that achieves this:
    export ORACLE_SID=MYDB
    rm -f ?/myexport.pipe
    mkfifo ?/myexport.pipe
    cat ?/myexport.pipe |compress > ?/myexport.dmp.Z &
    sleep 5
exp file=?/myexport.pipe full=Y log=myexport.logSame way for import, we create a pipe, zcat from the dmp.Z file, redirect it to the pipe and then read from pipe:
    export ORACLE_SID=MYDB
    rm -f ?/myimport.pipe
    mkfifo ?/myimport.pipe
    zcat ?/myexport.dmp.Z > ?/myimport.pipe &
    sleep 5
imp file=myimport.pipe full=Y show=Y log=?/myimport.logIn case there is any issue with the script, do let me know :)
Experts, please have a look...is it fine ? (Actually I dont have Oracle installed on my laptop(though have Fedora 6) so couldnt test the scripts)
I posted the same on my blog too. just for bookmark ;)

    http://amardeepsidhu.blogspot.com

actually, only the compression thing runs in the background. rest proceeds like normal only. just instead of giving normal file we use pipe as a file.
    nice article about named pipes

  • Exported MOV file from Express - what do I compress it as for media???

I exported a MOV file from Final Cut Express. Looks great. Now I need to send it to broadcast - CNN, NBC, etc.
What format should I compress it with Sorenson Squeeze 6? I've tried different presets but want to know what's the best one to use. Please help. Need responses ASAP.

I'm sorry, I meant to write you have to ask the broadcasters what they want. They can have a lot of very different demands.
This is also very dependent of what your material is. Fine, you exported to QuickTime Movie, but what did you export. HD? SD? What specification? If you don't know, open the file in the QT player and report exactly what it says in the movie inspector.
You can put anything on a big enough FTP server provided you have the time and a wide enough pipe. It's probably going to be a really big file or files so you'd better have a really fast connection and/or a lot of time. Sometimes FedExing a drive is faster.

  • I need to save some pictures from iPhoto to a SDHC photo card for a digital frame and was wondering if there is a way to shrink or compress file size for each picture as I have already cropped the pictures? Thank you

I need to save some pictures from iPhoto to a SDHC photo card for a digital frame and was wondering if there is a way to shrink or compress file size for each picture as I have already cropped the pictures? Thank you

Yes, you do this when you export the images from the Library.
    File -> Export
in the Size section, you don't need images larger than the frame size, so you can specify that and in the Jpeg Quality you can select the amount of compression used.
    This User Tip

has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

  • Windows 7 Compressed File Option Missing From Send Menu

I am looking for  the GPO setting to restore missing Send To Compressed Zipped Folder in Send To Menu.

I recently had to install winzip to open an encrypted file.  I noticed afterwards that the sendto compressed file was missing I use this feature a LOT in my work so assumed it must be a winzip thing.   Even beyond that I dislike the complexity
of winzip so uninstalled it afterwords.  Ever since then the "send to compressed file" option remains missing.   I followed the instructions to restore the file "Compressed (zipped) folder.ZFSendToTarget" to it's proper location
and to my surprise it was already there with original time/date stamp.   I replaced it anyway but no joy.  There are several webpages with this same instruction and it seems to work for everyone - by my case is obviously different.   Any
