I think there's been a lot of discussion on this so you should do a search as there might be better methods. <
Lord, yes, even on the sites themselves! Imagine that! Look for "Guidelines for creating and uploading your won stuff."
Uploading depends on your connection speed so file size is crucial. The compression is extremem so there's no real need to waste time uploading DV. You can go to MP4 or another decent encode and save yourself lots of time going up the pipe, plus a lower rez file takes much less time to process at the other end.

  • Tweaking compression for YouTube

I am trying to make the best possible files for uploading to YouTube. I am working with HDV Quicktimes exported from FCP and compressing using the AIC codec and a frame size of 640x360, as YouTube requires for 16:9. The longest file is 10:30 and comes in at 1.14 gig, just over the YouTube limit. I can't find a way to change the codec to reduce the file size. Is there any way to adjust quality with this codec?
Changing the frame size from 1440x1080 to 640x360 would have largely done the trick, I would have thought. But it doesn't seem to make much difference. In fact, I exported 2 versions out of FCP, one at the original frame size and one at 640x360 and both files are the same size! Can't for the life of me figure out why that is.
If anyone has any tips about compressing for YouTube channels, please let me know. Ideally we would upload files just under a gig so that YouTube's compression doesn't completely kill the quality.
    Thanks.

I followed everything kenstone said. Still having problems. Here's the new link...

The video is playing choppily, and now I'm even losing synch. What's going on?

  • What is the best compression for youtube videos ?

I know I can go in export movie, then chosse medium for youtube, but is there a better compression because when I upload it on youtube, the quality is much lower. Should i export with QuickTime or i dunno ?
    Thnx for aswering !!

What is your source material? If it is DV, then sending to YouTube in the Medium Preset is fine.
If your source is AVCHD, you could import at 1920x1080. Then after editing, share using QuickTime at 1280x720 in h.264. Then upload to YouTube through the website.

  • Compressing for YouTube

Hello All,  Does it matter which format and Codec I choose for sending a video to YouTube since most people will be watching it from there, or should I take into consideration people who may want to download.  I recently sent a video to YouTube and some people are experiencing the video stopping during playback, so i need to figure out what I can do to make it play back smoothly and continuously.
    Thank You
    Cris

    Chris:
An H264 file at standard defintion sizes and a bitrate of about 3 Mbps should work very, very well as a source for YouTube.
Yes, you could produce the largest file they let you upload, but it's also true that pristine quality is really not their main concern for encoding, so you could spend your life uploading gigantic files and get modest improvements in quality.
If quality is your main concern, I'd take a look at Vimeo.
Since YouTube is so popular, you may prefer the trade-off. In any case, uploading an H264 file with specs similar to those I described above should work fine. Using 2 pass VBR encoding in AME standalone can help in getting the most out of the bitrate.

  • Exporting/Compressing for YouTube

I exported a video I want to post on YouTube. The DV video is under ten minutes, but it's over 2GB.
I don't understand this. YouTube says "your videos can be up to 1GB in size and 10 minutes long."
But no matter how I export using QuickTime Conversion the video is over 2GB. Is there a way to compress the video so it's less than 1GB?

  • Best Compression for Youtube for long video

I have a 45 minute film I would like to upload to Youtube. I have outputted a file from FCP7 using settings as they are, ProRes422 and it is 1920 x 1080 and 40.4GB. I then used the Youtube presets in Compressor and now have a .mov file 1280 x 720 and 2.83GB. This upload from where I am in Australia will take approx 7 hours.
Can anyone please recommend a better setting that gives me good quality and a size that wont give me a long upload time? The film was shot on a Canon XA10, frame rate 25.
    Thank you.

Three ways to make a smaller file (with the assumption you are using H.264 as the codec)
    1. Lower the bit rate (image may degrade as there are less bits to carry the subtle image information - do a test to see what's acceptable)
    2. reduce the image size (smaller images need less bits to carry the same color subtlety - you will also need to reduce bit rate as well - no use shrinking the image and keeping the same high bit rate - you may see marginal file size reduction)
    3. reduce length (less to encode...)
Alternatively, start the upload just before you go to bed. Get a good night's sleep and the file should be at it's destination by the time you wake up.

  • Best Settings for YouTube's HIgh Quality Video

I see YouTube has a new "high quality" video option that uses H.264 video at 480 x 360. If I want to take full advantade of this format how should I build my videoo to upload? I assume I should use H.264, but Premiere doesn't have an option to do so at 480x360.

After numerous trials and extensive searches on forums (with solutions way too complicated for me) this is my recipe.
(After upgrading to PE 7 I hoped that PE would do the trick, but no.)
    1. Premiere Elements.
Export ("Share") to harddisk, DV-AVI, 4:3 or Widescreen doesn't matter.
    2. Windows Movie Maker.
Import this AVI-file. You won't need to change or edit anything.
    Just "publish" (to disk) in
    WMV-format, dvd-quality (4:3 size) PAL 3,0 M.
    3. You Tube.
    Upload to YouTube.
Then wait (approx 10 min. per minute movietime) until the uploaded movie is released and online in high quality.
    Happy uploading!
Max size is 100 Mb; but there are work arounds for that too.

  • Best format/compression for archiving old VHS home videos?

To those who have digitized old VHS home videos: what format/compression did you choose for them when archiving? I have been experimenting with all the different choices when exporting from iMovie, and the tradeoff between size and image quality. Just curious to see what others have decided on.

Thanks for the responses. Is MPEG-2 the best choice for VHS footage? i.e. is it sufficient for the relatively low quality of VHS? I thought MPEG-4 was superior to MPEG-2. Or is MPEG-4 for HD videos? I have been importing from a VCR through a Canopus ADVC-55 (i have eyetv but i think the imported video was blocky...it was a long time ago). Editing in iMovie 09 and exporting to QuickTime movie H.264 on the "high" quality setting, just below "best". Anyway, now I'm wondering if i can just export to MPEG-2, have the same quality image, but a smaller file size.

  • 24P Compression for YouTube?

I shot this video on a DVX100B in both 24P and 60i. I exported from FCE using H264 as a quicktime with an automatic data rate, Best Quality preset, current frame rate, 768x576 dimensions (native is listed as 557x417), and key frames every 24 frames. Here's the video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br3-Z-t9vHU
As you can see, there are horizontal lines on the video during quick motion in all scenes shot in 24p. This artifacting doesn't occur in the source footage or in the Quicktime export or after the video has been encoded as an FLV for Brightcove. It only occurs on YouTube, in both normal and high quality.
Has anyone else addressed this problem? I've troubleshooted for weeks, trying different combinations of MOV and MP4, changing the data rate, and key frames. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd appreciate any insight.

  • Compression for YouTube, to less than 100MB

Hello - I followed YouTube's instructions, and have been compressing from FCP, to MPEG-4. All's good - it looks great, client's happy. I now have quite a larger file, that another client would like to upload to YouTube, but it's well over 100MB, in the 145MB area, and about 9 1/2 min. How can I compress, so I can keep that nice quality, but put it under 100MB? Thanks so much!

YouTube has a *2 gigabyte* upload limit. But you still have to come in at under 10 minutes.
The last piece that I put up was a 900MB DV PAL file. Took a while but it looks fantastic.

  • How to view online video (eg YouTube) on Power PC G4

I gave my old 17" power pc G4 laptop to my mother a few months ago when I upgraded mine.  Its pre intel and running 10.4.11
Unfortunately the flash plug in currently running is too old for a bunch of online video services.  Is there any way to update or solve this?
I've tried downloading older versions from Adobe archives but it doesn't seem to work for me.
My mother doesn't need a new computer, she's really happy with the old 17" Power PC, but would ideally like to get these video capabilities up and running if possible.
    All help greatly appreciated!

Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users. However, this Flash version won't work for many videos on Facebook, YouTube and other sites. Adobe's latest version, 10.2.x or later, is only for Intel Macs. Adobe will not provide a newer Flash version for PPC Macs.
The message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player takes you to Flash Player requiring an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I found a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • Viewing online videos

I am now unable to view youtube or linked online videos.  It may be a consequence of my changing settings but I can not identify any as the problem

Try this first and see if it helps. if it doesn't post back with whatever settings you changed.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • I just bought the new 2014 Mac Mini 2.6 8Gig for $699 at the Apple Store Online. I want to use it for light editing in iMovie making video's for YouTube, I couldn't afford the higher priced models. Is this going to work for me? I hope so..

Will this do basic video editing for YouTube Video's in iMovie, I hope so.  It's all I could afford.
Just under $800 with tax and Applecare.
    It's stock 2.6 8gigs 1 terabyte hard drive.
I have two monitors DVI that I plan to hook to it.
I know it's weak but will it get me going without too much hardship.
I want to grow into the more high priced computers and Final Cut Pro later on.
I know I will need a bigger computer then.
    Thanks

There are many people using the basic (i5) 2012 MacMini and even older ones to edit complex films in FCP X so you should have no problems.
I have been using FCP 7 and FCP X since they came out on my 2008 iMac Core 2 Duo and am thinking of getting the same model as you rather than pay the astronomic price for a new 27" iMac.
The performance won't be quite as fast but it will be at least 4 times faster at rendering than my old iMac.
