Compressing long format video

HELLO everyone. I have a live event that I recorded and is approximately 90 minutes in length. I'm not sure the proper way to compress this video so that it fits on one DVD. Really, quick I'm exporting this video via FCP using QUICKTIME MOVIE. My settings I believe are ok. I have:
1. DV NTSC 48KHZ
2. INCLUDE = AUDIO AND VIDEO
3. MARKERS = NONE
Now, I was wondering if splittling the video in half and make two DVD's is the way to go or is there another way to compress it? I really don't have any experience in compressing files especially long format files. Thanks for your help.

Hey Dave, I just exported another Q.T. file using the same settings now my quicktime file is 9 gigs instead of 18 because I cut the video in half. If the video is 9 gigs when I import it into DVD STUDIO PRO and DVD SP begins to compress it will it still be 9 gigs once DVD SP compressor compresses it or will it be fewer gigs. The reason I'm asking is because I spent all night trying to compress 90 minutes of footage it took 12 hours and still wasn't complete. The Q.T. file was still 18 gigs when I tryed to burn it to DVD and as a result could not fit on a 4.7 gigs dvd. I know you mentioned compressor as a way to burn my footage on but I'm so illiterate on that program is there and easy approach to accomplishing this task using that program?

Compressing Long Format HD Show in Quicktime

Anyone working on long format shows and sending quicktimes for client review or as working copies for composers?
We are cutting a show in DVCProHD 24p and currently have a 3 hour rough cut that we need to get to various people. We have been periodically sending smaller chunks by compressing to Quicktime with H.264 and sending via FTP, and have had excellent success. But now that our show is long we can't make QT's without it starting to take a day or longer to do the compression, and projecting file sizes of 8gigs or more for a half size H.264 QT.
We've tried other compression settings as well, such as Sorenson, with similar results.
Is anyone out there using QT for long format files from HD footage? Any suggestions?

Compress Sorenson 3...320x180...or slightly bigger. Takes FAR less time...and still looks pretty good.

What is the best way to compress longer HD videos for the web

I am struggling with the best way to post HD, as well as SD videos to the web - Vimeo as well as YouTube sites. Some of my files are up to an hour long, and above.
I've tried mp4, H.264 compression, multi-pass, as well as ProRes in various settings. The files are either too small or too large. I have an stand-alone Flash encoder, but it seems to take an inordinate amount of time.
My computer only has a Duo Core - its the first Intel processor. Is it too slow to process these large Video files?
ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There are quite a few videos on YouTube that are up to 3 hours long. If you are having issues uploading long YouTube movies, have you contacted their tech support?

yes and no!
using the intended Import from Camera routines, iM converts automatically in its very own AppleIntermediateCodec. so, answer is yes.

one thing to be kept in mind when talking about these 'issues':
iM, this 12€, is meant as a CONSUMER toy tool.
it supports AVCHD vers1 (=no 1080/60p, no >24Mbps, no 3D).
fingers crossed, we'll see soon some iM/QT/FCPX update for support of AVCHD v2 ........
the main consumer devices are within the specs, iM supports.
using professional equipments makes usage of professional software (FCPX, AP) optional.

I have this question too. I made my own video on my iPhone 4S. I want to put it on my iPad. I synced it to my iPhoto, and trying now to move it to iPad. The computer WILL NOT do this. Why not? I occasionally get messages it's not in a correct format, but for God's sake, I filmed it on the phone, in whatever format Apple uses. ***?

I have a 40 minute 4:3 DV format video in final cut pro and I need to fit it on a DVD (4.7 gig) using DVD studio Pro. I have the whole FInal Cut Pro package (compressor, live type, etc...) so how would I compress the video and then put it in DVD studio pro, with the highest video quality possible?

I have premier elements 9. I can no longer create videos. Is it because of upgrade? Please tell me what to do. TY

When I open elements 9- to create a new video- it is now just a blank, black/gray screen. I can no longer create videos. I can't upload from computer, etc. Is this from the new download of Rebel?
Please tell me what to do, where to go. I realize this is an old version- but I liked it and it was easy to use....Am I required to purchase another version now?

You need to explain your situation further so we are clear on how to answer your question.
1. What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 9 running on? Have you been and are you now running the program
as the 9.0.1 Update? When you the last time that you used this program successfully for one of your video productions?
2. Are you trying to import video from the Canon EOS Rebel t3i or another model into Premiere Elements 9 workspace?
From what I have read, the camera records with a MPEG4 video compression and has a .mov file extension. Is that true? What camera setting are you using 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720, or other? And, what does it say for frames per second?
So, do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 9.
Bottom line: are you using the same computer, same Premiere Elements 9, same Canon footage, that worked before and now it is not working?
And, please clarify...important....do you meet this problem even before you try to import your Canon video into a project?
When you open the program from its desktop icon, are you left facing a gray window with menu names across the top that will not open?

When you export/share your video you have a choice of formats.
Windows Media is a good option and you can choose a preset. Some of the options are DSL/Cable, Dialup, and others.
Steve's book has a nice section on Sharing Options, and he has a very nice article posted at Muvipix.com as well.

Using different format video than the sequence.

I am a total newbie to FCP, though quite experienced with avid, premiere and vegas.
I've created a sequence in FCP with setup: 640x480 25p with quicktime settings photo-JPG 75%. I want to do a quick rough edit of tons of random footage I have, all using a variety of different format videos, some quicktime PJPG, some MJPEG, and some DV (no hard to edit mp4, mpeg etc.). I understand that to preview my edit properly I need to render my selection with command or option + R, but at the moment I cannot preview my edit at all without rendering. This is the first time I encounter something like this, other editors will at least play the edit - even applying basic effects, but just dropping frames - I'd need to render to play without dropping frames. But in FCP if my source footage is DV or any other format i just see a big UNRENDERED screen. Is there any way around this without converting all of my footage into P-JPG (which is definitely not a feasible solution).

Yea sorry I should have mentioned, its version 5.1 and its not my machine I'm using it on (Mac Pro 3Ghz 2x dualcore)... hence my profile not showing it. I am considering buying a Mac Pro and FCP (at the moment I have only the Macbook Pro).
I've heard so many positive things about FCP now that I thought the switch was inevitable - and this project I thought would be a good test to try out FCP. But from what I understand I picked a really wrong project to try it out! All the footage is already captured, some captured years years ago - and I need to do a quick edit. ... some of my source files are DV, some are MJPG, some are 640x480, some are 320x240, some are 720x576 etc.
To convert all of this footage to one res/format would require hundreds of gigs, and take way too long... I'd probably finish the edit in premiere on PC before the conversion of the media finished! The point of this edit is to get an idea of the finished piece, to narrow down the areas which I need to extract from all of the footage - i.e. in premiere I would do this rough edit, then 'trim' the project with a massive handle (a couple of seconds), and THEN convert all the trimmed media to one resolution/format (Which would be waaaay quicker, as its only 30-40mins instead of 50 hours) and then finish the edit/grade, work on individual shots in aftereffects, combustion etc. I really don't know much about FCP when it comes to setting up, options, performance etc... so I"m really hoping that I've set something up wrong somewhere. I"ve done DV edits on this machine before and they were very straightforward (DV files, on a DV timeline, DV project etc - nothing out of the ordinary)

HT2506 After updating my system to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 I can no longer view videos on Facebook or other sites. The only one I can view videos on is youtube. I have downloaded Adobe Flash player and still no luck. I cannot even open Preview on my computer

Merely clicking the Preview icon in the Dock doesn't cause it to open anything, unless you had one or more windows open the last time it quit.
If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test.
1. If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, triple-click the line below to select it:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select

from the contextual menu. A folder should open. Can no longer download videos from my digital camera to iPhoto.

OK people, please help me! I've been a Mac user for a couple of years now but still have no idea how to use it properly!! (having been a PC user all my life). Today I changed the quality on my digital camera (Panasonic Lumix TZ7) to be the lowest quality so I could fit more on my SD card, not feeling the need to read the instructions first. When I came to download to iPhoto, it wouldn't. So resorting to reading my camera instruction book, I needed to download some software that came with the camera which I did. But when I still couldn't download the videos using this software, I read the instruction book more thoroughly and discovered that the software I needed (PhotofunStudio) wasn't compatible with a Mac (PC only) and the software I had downloaded (Arcsoft Panorama maker and Arcsoft MediaImpression) obviously wasn't what I needed. When neither of these would download the video, I deleted the software from my iMac but when I opened iPhoto, it gave me some error messages about files not able to be read (or something similar, I can't quite remember) and a list of file names to which I clicked OK not even thinking about it. What that did was delete all videos from iPhoto I had downloaded from this camera! And now I can't download any videos from my camera to iPhoto!!! The only thing I can think is that it has changed the default download/view to be Arcsoft (even though I've deleted all the files - I think!!) So please, how do I get iPhoto to again download my videos? Sorry for the long winded post but because I am a hopeless Mac user, thought I would give as much info as possible!
I'm computer literate with PC but definitely not Mac - it scares me as I don't know what I am doing plus it is my OWN machine so don't want to stuff it up (which is exactly what I seem to have done!). I had no trouble previously downloading videos on the higher quality setting to iPhoto. Please can someone help?!

OK thanks I will try that. I just don't understand why I still can't download new videos as I've deleted the software I installed and I've changed my camera settings back to what they were before when I could download into iPhoto. I perhaps should have mentioned it's iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5. Is there any way of putting iPhoto back as the "default download and view" programme?
It could be as simple as longer (larger) videos - iPhoto does not always handle larger video files well

iPhoto is not a download and view program - it is a photo management database program that imports photos - Image Capture is a download program - Preview is a view program
The default program to download your photos is set in the preference panel of either iPhoto or image capture

IPad after update to 6.0.1 no longer stream video from my wireless Internet home monitoring camera. Help

I have a wireless-n Internet home monitoring camera system that before i upgraded to 6.0.1 streamed video. Does anyone have the similar issue who has fixed it?

I should mention that it no longer streams video. Duh.

I can no longer play videos on my Mac mini.

I got a new magic mouse for Christmas. I connected it to my Mac mini Lion. It works great but I can no
longer play videos like from YouTube. I just see a black screen. Even the start triangle does not show up.
This is date coincident with installing the new mouse.
Does anybody have a clue what is going on here?

The Magic Mouse and YouTube videos don't have anything to do with each other. I switch between my Magic Mouse and my track pad all day, and it has no effect on YouTube.
YouTube playback is browser and Flash Player related.
Check your Safari Security preferences to be sure that Plugins are allowed.

I can no longer view videos on a browser web page. Ive installed the latest flash player and have quicktime.

1. System Preferences > Flash Player > Advanced > Delete All
     Press the "Delete All" button.
     Install Adobe Flash Player.

   Download it first.
   The next step is important.
   Click Safari in the menubar and select “Quit Safari”.
    Follow the prompts and install it.
    Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.
2. Allow Plug-ins
    Safari > Preferences > Security
    Internet Plug-ins > "Allow plug-ins"
    Enable it.
3. Safari > Preferences > Privacy
    Press the button “ Remove All Website Data”.
