Compressing mov Files

Hi People.
Am hoping to get some help from here with regards to a certain problem. I have a 1.19 GB quicktime mov file which I would like to compress down to a size small enough to email across to someone. It's rather sentimental (of my nephews 1st xmas day - trying to get it across to his parents)
any ideas would be hugely appreciated!

Here is a bit rate converter. It will figure out the file size for you. It's free!

Most email accounts have a 10 MB file size.
Another thing you can do is post the video on youTube. You can make it private to were only you can he can view the video. youTube has a maximum of 2 gigs and 10 minute file size. youTube has a help section for making the video. You need an account. If you get stuck report back to here and I'm sure some of us here will give you some help.
Tip: use the h.264 format in Quicktime Pro to compress the video. You must have Quicktime Pro to do what you want to do.

  • Compressing .mov files out of Final Cut

I'm trying to export some Final Cut projects into .mov files but I need them to be compressed to 10mb or less. How do I do that in compressor? Or is there another software application that can take existing .mov files and shrink them down? Any help is appreciated.

Take the exported quicktime files. I use reference files, and drop it into compressor (open compressor and import it or just drop the file into the list area there). In the dropdown settings you should be able to select a web version that suits you and export it.
There is also info in the inspector that tells you an approximate size of the exported file. That should help determine if the codec you chose is going to work or not.

  • How to compress .MOV files?

So, I have a monster 4GB folder full of .MOV files shot on an iPhone 4 that I need to compress small enough to fit on two or three 700MB discs - or a 2GB flash drive. However, I don't really know how to it. I used the Archive Utility to zip it and the folder is still the same size as the original, so I assume that doesn't truly "compress" things. Is it possible to compress in iMovie (and if so, how), or will I need freeware to do it? Or is it even possible at all?

Is it possible to compress in iMovie (and if so, how), or will I need freeware to do it? Or is it even possible at all?
The basic answer here is that any converter app that exports the audio + video data to a lower combined total data rate will produce a small file. However, there is a limit to your ability to decrease the data rates and still produce useable output. In general, decreasing the data rate will drecrease quality unless you also decrease the dimensions of the targeted encoding matrix and/or otherwise modify the distribution of data per unit of time. In most cases the basic strategy is to use a high effeciency codec export option that allows the user to manually modify the export settings to produce the most compact file with a level of quality that the user "can live with." How low you can go will usually depend on the preferences of the specific user. Since your iPhone files are already highly compressed, my personal recommendation in your case would really be to move up to higher density optical media (e.g., DVD) or break down and spend the $10-$20 it would take to upgrade to a 16 GB or 32 GB drive.

  • How does compressing movie files work?

Hello! I am new here, and with FC i made a 17GB movie. However, i wish to compress it so it doesnt take up as much room on my hard drive. Can i compress this movie file so it takes up much less? How should i compress it? And does it hurt the quality of it or how do i de compress it? Thanks!

Can i compress this movie file so it takes up much less?
Yes. What format is it now, what size are you aiming for? H264 is a good choice, great results and a much smaller file size.
    How should i compress it?
Use Compressor or QuickTimePlayers "Export" function -you already have both.
MPEG Streamclip will also make H264 and is a free download. There are several others which you can buy, Autodesk Cleaner and Sorenson Squeeze are two that spring to mind.
And does it hurt the quality of it...
It can turn out poor if the compression is overdone. Test your compression on a small section first -you could mark in and out on part of your movie in QuickTime Player, copy/paste it into a new QuickTime Player document and use that for testing.
or how do i de compress it?
That usually does not turn out so well. Keep the original instead -hard drives are cheap these days. Just buy an external drive and store it there.

  • Compressing mov file

I'm trying to compress a 2.5 minute video to an mpeg-1 format for playback on a website. The sequence (created in final cut pro) needs to be no more than 16 meg and must be mpeg1 (web server guidelines). However, I can't seem to get it to 16 meg.
I converted it to a quicktime movie and made it 6 megs. However, when using Compressor to convert it to an mpeg1, it tells me the estimate file size will increased to 26 meg.
What's the best way of compressing a video to 16 meg or less into an mpeg 1 format?

    Hi Joensen.
I performed the task a couple of months ago and can't seem to remember exactly how I did it. I will go back and look into the process and post what the process.
In the meantime, I know I used Compressor and compressed it significantly. Hope this helps in the meantime.

  • Compressing Movie Files

I am in the process of building a site with a number of short video clips. I have been outputting Quicktime movies from FCP working with 10bit uncompressed media. I then bring these short Quicktime files into Compressor and export with various compressions (MPEG4, H.264 @ 800kbits). When I look at the compressed Quicktimes they look decent. As soon as I bring them into iWeb they look awful. Pixelated, artifacts - unusable. Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    +Yet another note!+
The H.264 compression is nothing less than amazing...
But I've found a better route than Compressor's built-in routines (I use Motion for my video heavy lifting).
Save your files at 100% quality using H.264. Audio at 100% (44.1kHz or better/16-bit sampling).
Then run them through QT Pro (H.264) at 50% quality or less (some trial and error here depending on the file - similar to what iMaster's suggests above - to a point)...
You will get a far better squeeze (quality vs file size) than anything Compressor alone can do - in my experience.
Where I differ from iMaster is the ".mov" extension is better (more output options)... though ".mp4" reaches a larger audience.
I have an example of this workflow here:
    http://www.wdd3.info/_WaterfordDigitalDesign/VS-Med.html
Started out in life as a 300MB+ file whittled down to 43 MB. A few "ripples" here and there, but all things considered worth the trade-offs. And you will need a data rate of 2Mb/s to view it cleanly.

  • How do i compress .mov files for sharing via email?

    "COMPRESS" is greyed-out/unavailable.

Do you really want to compress the jpeg or reduce the image size?  Those are two different things entirely.  To compress a jpeg while keeping the pixel dimensions the smae export out of iPhoto via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  and in the Quality menu select the amouth of jpeg compression you need to make the file size smaller.
If you need a smaller picture export as above but set the size to Custom and enter the largest dimenion you want in the image. The image qualtiy will remain the same but the image will be smaller and, to some extent, so will the file size.

  • Compressing .mov files for MoileMe

Trying to compress a 5min video thats 131MB down to the 10MB requirement for MobileMe Public folder upload. Compressing it as a ZIP doesnt work, and H.264 is still too big.
Is the only way to get it that small to change the "quality" to low when exporting as H.264 Quicktime?

Trying to compress a 5min video thats 131MB down to the 10MB requirement for MobileMe Public folder upload.
What 10MB requirement? I uploaded a 90MB video file for a client to view yesterday. I have done others that were several hundred MB in the past and 147MB are being uploaded as I write this. The file size limit is actually *1 Gigabyte*.
If you just need a small file, look at the Share > Email options in the Pro version of QuickTime Player 7.
It will be sent to an email message in Mac Mail, simply drag it out and upload to your public folder.

  • Avid Meridien Compressed.mov file

Can anyone help me with this. I have been given an Avid Meridien quicktime file and I have been given the codec so I can read it. Quicktime can play this fine, but when I import it into Final Cut Pro and change my sequence settings to add to my timeline it says
    'General Error'
    Then
    'Error:Out of Disc Space'
Does anyone know how to solve this, so that I can play this file in my timeline. Would appreciate it
    Thanks

I think tallguy is right. The Avid codec, when installed, will allow playback of Avid files in Quicktime player but not in Final Cut Pro. At least that is what I concluded when I once tried the same thing. I really didn't make sense in that FCP is Quicktime based software... go figure. I was going back to a DV based project at the time so I transcoded to dvrez so I didn't have any quality issues.

  • Compressing .mov and keeping alpha without changing to .flv

    Hello,
I am trying to run a .mov file with alpha through Adobe Media Encoder to get a compressed .mov file with alpha.
I found that I could change the file type to .flv with On2 VP6 codec, but I cannot use that because my file type must be .mov.  I am bringing the compressed .mov into Unity as a movie texture and Unity will only accept .mov .mpg .mpeg .mp4 .avi .asf.
Is there a way that I can run a .mov with alpha through AME and get a compressed .mov with alpha?
    Thank you
    Jon

The reason that you're getting a large file out of After Effects is that you're using the defult Lossless output module template, which uses the Animation codec. There is no reason to go through AME to make a smaller QuickTime movie. Just export directly from After Effects and choose a different codec in the output module settings. If you're using QuickTime, PNG is a good choice for getting smaller files that still have alpha channels.
However, why do you even care about file size if you also want an alpha channel? The reason to care about file size is for final ditribution; the reason to care about alpha channels is for using the file in a post-production process. Worrying about both at the same time means that you're likely confusing the requirements of two very different parts of the pipeline.

  • Exported MOV file from Express - what do I compress it as for media???

I exported a MOV file from Final Cut Express. Looks great. Now I need to send it to broadcast - CNN, NBC, etc.
What format should I compress it with Sorenson Squeeze 6? I've tried different presets but want to know what's the best one to use. Please help. Need responses ASAP.

I'm sorry, I meant to write you have to ask the broadcasters what they want. They can have a lot of very different demands.
This is also very dependent of what your material is. Fine, you exported to QuickTime Movie, but what did you export. HD? SD? What specification? If you don't know, open the file in the QT player and report exactly what it says in the movie inspector.
You can put anything on a big enough FTP server provided you have the time and a wide enough pipe. It's probably going to be a really big file or files so you'd better have a really fast connection and/or a lot of time. Sometimes FedExing a drive is faster.

  • Need advise, I have purchased compressor 4.1 to compress my movie file, particularly MKV files. Problem is, that the software freezes when trying to import the 10GB MKV. Any one that can help?

Afraid Compressor won't work with MKV. If you have access to a system running an earlier version than Mavericks, and with Perian installed you can use MPEG Streamclip or Quick Time Pro to convert to a mov.

  • So do you need QT pro to compress a movie file

    ?
I'm on a budget , is there any shareware or freeware or some way (legally) of compressing my movie file(s) to a smaller size
    please.

    OK great.
Where can I obtain Streamclip? to cut the offending 48 seconds .I had a quick look on Macupdate but nothing came up
BTW you said that audio is puny and video data rate is absurdly high Is there a way when recording ( I use a Canon Digital Ixus 55 camera with movie capability) to sort this out to avoid this 'issue ' in the future? ( I know the audio is never going to be good on a stills camera but thought to ask as you seem very Knowledgeable .
Thank you very much for your help QuickTimeKirk it is very much appreciated , I can't explain how much ,, becca

  • I lose audio when I compress my .mov file to an .mpg.  I use FCX and Compressor (and I've tried all 3 .mpg transfers that compressor allows)Help!

I have to compress my files to mpg to use on the multiple PC's in the district for broadcast.  They wont/cant take my .mov files.  Whenever I compress the files to mpg in any of the 3 non-transport formats, audio is affected.
    Help please.

Transport streams aren't acceptable for their broadcast requirements?

  • Compress a .mov file

I know this has been asked a million times, but because I don't know anything about making movies to begin with, I couldn't follow any of the other threads.
I have a 120MB .mov file that I want to compress to less than 25MB so I can email it using gmail. I right-clicked and selected "Compress," but it only got it down to 99MB as a zip file.
My friend once sent me a video of similar length (3 or 4 minutes) that was high quality and only 11.7 MB, and since this one is bad quality I figured it would be easy to compress. But I can't figure out what to do or what program to use to do it.

    What applications do you have?
To do good compression, you need a compressor. Final Cut Studio comes with one as do a couple of the i-apps. There are some online compression systems, too, but I've never used one.
The "compress" operation you ran at the Finder level merely compresses the file, it does not actually create new media in a newer, more compact format.
