Compressing PDF in XI for PC

Being speedy on the job is a necessary thing. I found that Adobe's instruction on your/their site only had part of the description in how to compress on Acrobat X. Here's how to compress a file for Acrobat XI in PC.
Click and hold down File
Click on Save as Other. . . .
Choose from the list in the pop-up window Reduced Size PDF . . .

No, it's just that PDF export isn't built into the OS.
Tell them to send you JPEGs or to install PDFcreator, which adds PDF as a "printer".

  • Where is original "Compress PDF" download for Mac OS X 10.5.8 (not 6.0!!)

I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8, which doesn't exhibit the “Compress PDF” workflow on the Print dialog that used to appear in OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Apparently an update, which would restore the “Compress PDF” to the Print dialog, was available, but it has now been replaced by an update for Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6 or later. Where can I find the original update for Mac OS X 10.5.8?? Or how else can I compress my PDFs?
    Cheers,
    Aryleen

Thanks, that's a great help! Not as easy as hitting the "Compress PDF" button in the Print dropdown menue, but almost as good. Good bye massive PDFs! ;))

  • Quartz filter settings for compressing pdf file

I have used the nominal quartz filter setting (reduce file size) to compress pdf file.  It reduced the file
size significantly--but the text resolution was considerably blurred.
What is an appropriate setting to reduce pdf file size and not destroy the test resolution ?

    See if this helps...

  • How to reduce size or compress PDF files?

    Hi guys,
Does someone knows if there is a way  to reduce the size of the PDF file with good quality even on Pictures and Scanned documents? I know the option 'export', 'quartz filter' 'reduce size', but the compression is so extrem. Many files can't not been read, the quality is so bad. Is there a additional app, software or extension that let the user play with the compression on pdf files and let it be more personalized like the dopdf V7 available for windows? i am very dissapointed with this. Please help or suggestion. I will appreciate it. Thanks

I have used the excellent PDF Toolkit app for a while, and its preformed well. Occassionaly it makes the document into a negative image...which Im noyt sure why...
Mathishk, im trying your online version out, and am impressed and admire the fact that you have done this.
    Well done.
A TRICK i use often. Once all hires images are on the designed document - and its coming in at 15-20mb, just change the link to the images so they are 'missing' then make a pdf.
i.e 'Hi Res images' to HRes images - old'
The screen resolution of images is still great, but file comes in at fraction of the size.
You 'trick' the document to use screen images only. So my 18mb file comes in as 5.2mb.
Just remember to change the images folder name back, so files relink.

  • Compressed PDF Dictionary Entry w/ Portable Collections in PDF 1.7/Acrobat 9.0?

First of all, I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but I thought it could potentially be tied into the SDK.
Anyhow, I am in the process of writing a program for verifying PDF file structure and whether or not the file adheres to the current spec.  A current issue I have encountered is a seemingly compressed PDF dictionary entry inside the PDF file.  This seems to only occur with files that use Portable Collections, and the strange thing is that the beginning of the entry is in plaintext, but then it gets compressed somewhere along the way (with no corresponding /Filter entry).  Of course Acrobat 9 reads the file without issue, but I cant for the life of me discern what compression is actually being used.  Any help was to what is actually occurring here would be most appreciated.
Here's an example (converted from hex to ascii so some of the caracters may be incorrect):
    <</Subtype/XML/Length 2986/Type/Metadata?W}pT????&???$?_?8]7~??6??kM??}Y?l $!?20??
    Raw string:
    0D3C3C2F537562747970652F584D4C2F4C656E67746820323938362F547970652F4D65746164617461AC577D70 54D515DFCD269B0F1C24885FE9385D377E00F336EFFB6B4DA2D97D59126C202421093230BEC
As you can see, the dictionary entry begins in cleartext and then gets compressed along the way.  This doesn't seem to be Ascii85 and couldn't be Flate, right? So does that mean that it is run-length?
    Thanks!

Can you please provide an actual PDF with this?

  • Does Preview compress PDFs when saving?

Hi.  My scanner can group separate scans into a single PDF on its own, but it is significantly slower than scanning documents separately and merging them with Preview.
Since scans are essentially saved twice when going the "merge with Preview" route (once when scanned, again when merged), I'm curious to know whether Preview compresses PDFs with each save.  If so, I'd like to know how lossy this process is.  Anyone know?
Thanks in advance for any help / info!

  • Where is "save as compressed pdf"??

I've just started using OS X 10.5.2 (it came on my new MacBook; I use 10.3.9 or 10.4.11 on my other computers) and discovered the lack of a "save as compressed pdf" option with the new OS. Any suggestions as a replacement since this is something I use multiple times daily?
I use this feature to save illustration-rich PowerPoint slides in a compressed format for posting to Blackboard or WebCT. I know I can "save as pdf" to create a master pdf with the new OS and then open that pdf file with Preview and compress it to save again (with a different name) as a smaller file. However the Mac OS help under 10.4.11 cautions that this will create a file of inferior quality plus the onus of having to do several additional steps and to then end up with two pdf versions of the same PowerPoint file.
Any idea why this feature disappeared with 10.5.2 when it's been available in the previous versions of OS X?

OK, I see what you mean about less than adequate quality on some of the images and words. My own writing on the power point slides comes out clear, but some of the writing associated with some of the images came out less than stellar.
Colorsync was almost beyond my grade level, but I was able (finally) to put a protocol together to make a “filter” that would compress but not as much.
Below are the steps I took; its not quite so bad, and hope this works,
    Paul
Steps to alter compression of pdf files
    1. Use spotlight to find and open Colorsync Utility
    2. For me it opened to “Profile First Aid Log”; you don’t want this; instead,
Click on Filters on the list of icons on the top (has a red, green and blue filter appearance, next to calculator on right)
    3. The 7th line down reads “Reduce File Size”; click on button on the far right
    4. Click on “Duplicate Filter” on the menu that pops up
This creates a new line at the bottom of the menu that reads
    “Reduce File Size Copy”
    5. Click on the left button next to “Reduce File Size Copy”
Several items should come up including one called “image compression”
    6. Click the left button next to “Image compression”
You should see a line that reads “Quality”
    7. Push the quality button to the right of the word “Quality” to the far right.
You are now done creating an altered colorsync profile.
To compress a pdf, you then
    1. Open the pdf file using Preview
    2. Click on “File”, then “Save As”
    3. In the section that says “Quartz Filter”, click on the blue button on the right
    4. Click on the line that reads “Reduce File Size Copy” (this is what you have created from above)
    5. Before pressing “Save”, be sure to rename your file to something new in the “Save as” box at the top (e.g., change from “File” to “File compressed”)
    6. Press Save.
Doing it this way, I converted a 10.4 MB pdf into a 2.2 MB pdf.
Some of the figures were still a tad blurry, but it was better.
If I used the original filtering, I got a file that was 612 KB. Writing on the figures was a tad worse.
And yes, it was a lot easier and nicer when “compress pdf” was a feature of Power Point.

  • Editing multipage PDF in Illustrator for print service bureau

I have a series of 4-page PDFs that I've edited in Illustrator and resaved back into the original files, which were created in Quark (not by me, and the Quark files are not available). My client will have these printed by a professional service bureau, so I want to be sure there'll be no problems with the files I send them. If I outline all fonts, is there anything else I should be aware of?
    Thanx for any help.

This depends on your service bureau, adn if they prefer .ai files or .pdf files.
The advantge to a .pdf file is that the service bureau prints the file as is, and it is quick for them.
The advantage to .ai, is that the service bureau has more control over the file, and have more power to make changes and they can get your job done right if they want to put the time into imaging this.
I would consult your service bureau for which PDF compression works best for them. The most important thing is that you comb over your file prior to making a .pdf to check for things(eg: are blacks using consistlently the same CMYK breakdown, do you want rich blacks of 60c 40my 100K, is everything bold or thin enough, etc).

  • Problem Compression PDFs on Preview

When I try to compress a PDF file in Preview using Save As and then "Reduce File Size" in the filter, the new file created is actually BIGGER than the old file -- more than twice as big, actually. Can anyone explain what I might be doing wrong?

  • How to Automate Compressing PDF files in a Watched Directory

I want to automatically compress PDF files as they get placed into a watched directory. I would like the compressed files placed in another directory and have the original file either deleted or place in another directory. If Acrobat Pro X can do this, how do I set it up.

I noticed that Acrobat Distiller will watch an input directory and move files to an output directory. I tried using Distiller to compress a PDF file, but all it did was move the PDF file to the out directory without doing any compression. Is there any way that Distiller could be configured to do what I want?
I also called the number listed on the Adobe web site for LiveCycle products. They told me they don't sell their product to non government companies and they referred me to 4 Point to get further info. I called them and only got a voice mail. I'm waiting for a call back.
I found a product that does exactly what I need. It is called PdfCompressor Professional Edition. But, it costs more than what I want to spend. I'm guessing that LiveCycle will cost more than I want to spend also. If there are any other products that cost less than $150, I would like to know what they are.

  • Print: Compress PDF Option Help - Leopard

    hello,
as a preface, we're a photography company that routinely saves PDF files with images to send to clients for approval.
i understand that with leopard, they removed the Compress PDF option from the print menu. i followed the instructions, opened it up with Preview and saved as reduced file size. the images all came out VERY grainy. with the Compress PDF option, the image quality was great.
so i went and restored Compress PDF using this link: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/compresspdfworkflow.html
however the images still come out as grainy as they did with the "reduce file size" option. anyone have any advice on how to get it working like it did in the previous OS?
    thanks much

I had more or less the same issur.

  • Print: Compress PDF Option is Gone!

Print: Compress PDF is Gone in Leopard for PowerPoint. I used it often. I tried to compress in Preview but the resolution is way too grainy. Help!!!!!!

    OK - one step forward!
You need to create a new "Filter" in Colorsync. Start Colorsync, select Filters, press the + button to create a new filter. Give it a meaningful name like "Compress PDF Medium Quality".
Click on the down arrow at the right and select Add Image Effects Components.
Choose Image Compression from the list - image Compression attributes will appear.
Change MODE to JPG (it works for me)
Change the QUALITY to near maximum (you may need to experiment with this)
Close this new filter by clicking on the arrow at left.
Now OPEN the PDF with the Colorsync FILE/OPEN menu selection.
Select EXPORT from the Colorsync FILE menu
Your new filter should appear in the drop-down menu for Quartz Filter
Doing this reduced a 1Mb PDF to 450Kb and the image quaility was acceptable. The built-in filter reduced it to 280K but image quality was poor.

  • Setting "Compress PDF" preferences?

    Hi,
I can't find where I can set the options for "Save as PDF"? I want to be able to tell it how much to compress the images in my file and how much to downsample the images, but I can't find any documentation to tell me where these options or preferences are set? I have tried the "Compress PDF" option but it doesn't seem to do much compression. Is there a place where those preferences are set?
    Thanks -- Andy
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Edit Prefrences > Units and Rulers > Screen Resolution
Enter your screen resolution in the box.
Now, if you go to View > Print Size the Rulers will show the actual size in the units you have the ruler set to, and the photo will appear the same size on your screen as it will be printed.

  • Compress Pdf in C# Need Code

Hello, I want to compress pdf... Can any one tell me how can i compress the pdf in c#  point me to some article. I have the License Copy of Adobe Professional.
I am using the Adobe Version X. so any one please assist me how can i compress the pdf.
Let me know guyz for additional information.

While you wait for a reply, I have some ideas for you to think about.
    1. I don't know what you mean by the PDF SDK, so I will assume you mean the Adobe PDF Library. This isn't available for download but the documentation for it is part of the Acrobat SDK. Look at the plug-in reference. Now, many plug-in methods are not available in the Adobe PDF Library, especially all of those starting AV, but you can see what is available. In any case it is licensed for use via DataLogics, and while the original library is C/C++ only, they provide various additional functions and platforms.
    2. I don't know the abilities of LiveCycle products, but they do have their own forums and experts.
    3. Looking at the actual requirement. First "compress" is not a term ever used for PDF in this connection, because it's confusing. PDF files are already internally compressed. What you want to do is reduce file size I imagine. Now, this is not magic - you cannot have a program which will "always make files smaller". But there are certain very specific things that can be done. For example, image resoluion can be reduced. Of course, this will have no effect if there are no images, or hey are already at a low resolution; and it is easy to reduce quality below acceptable measures. Please be very specific about what you want to do, and we can tell you what is realistically possible. I strongly suggest you try out the PDF Optimizer for a wide mix of your files, try it out, see what reduces, and have stringent quality tests.
