Compressing photo size in iphoto - want file size small but pic big? how?

Hello
I hope this is the right section for this post.
I am building a website and I want photos on it, I am building it in iWeb.
in iPhoto is there any way of making my photos a smaller file size?
I have cropped them a bit, but some are still about 400kb.
I want my site to load quickly.
I want a gallery page with thumbnails to click on to enlarge them, but on my home page I want 1 big picture. What is compression and can i do it in iPhoto? Can I still have a picture the same size (to look at) but the file size is smaller. I have heard photos should be about 30-70kb and mine are 400kb jpegs!?
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   using iphoto and iweb, not hosting on .mac

I believe that iWeb optimises the pics when you publish the site, but you could confirm that on the iWeb forum.
If you want to reduce the size of pics using iPhoto, you do that on export: Select the pics you want and go File -> Export. Use the dialogue to specify the size of the pics you require and export them to a folder on the desktop.

  • IPhoto changing file size to 0 kb after only a few edits

I am uploading approx 5mb sized files directly from my camera into iPhoto. after just a few edits ( rotate, crop, color boost - nothing but presets) the file size is reduced to 0 kb and I cannot access the photo from any other program ( upload to facebook, email, slideshow). I can still see the thumbnail with the edits I made but can only do any thing with it if I revert to original. When it changes back to the original file size as well as the original photo. I am using version 8.1.2

Then that  suggests the original Library is corrupt.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhone 4s (IOS 5) photo app editing Reduces the file size drastically.

Anyone else notice that after you take a photo the file size is about 3.7 MB or so, but if you edit it with the new editing features of IOS 5 the file size is reduced to under 1 MB.  It really does not matter what you do, when you save it (and it distroys the original by the way) the file size is reduced (and thus the quality) to as low as 296 KB.  This is ridiculas. Be very careful or you'll end up with a bunch of useless photos.
Anyone else experience this?  Try it and email the result, that should show you the size (you do not get a choice of sizes anymore). I'll sick with the 3rd party apps until (if) Apple changes this.
Let me know what you think??

The upgrade to IOS 5.0.1 offered no fixes to this issue. Can't understand why 4 caused no issues with the camera and the update to 5 took it down. Anyone else find a fix for this?

  • IPhoto DB file size discrepancy

I had my macbook pro stolen, but a week before I backed up my iPhoto DB 15.7GB file using Finder to copy/paste the file to an external drive. I copied the backed up iPhoto DB file to my new Macbook Air, but now iPhoto is missing a large amount of pictures. When I launch iPhoto now, it says I have 923x pictures using 4.3GB. I am lost as to how I can recover the remaining 11.4GB and why they're not being displayed. What's interesting is that I used iPhoto Library Manager Rebuild option and it rebuilt my DB to a new file and that DB is only 5.04GB. This makes more sense and proves I'm missing 11GB+ of photos. Any assistance and guidance is greatly appreciated!

Depress teh option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library option to select the library on the EHD and see if iPhoto will open it
You can go to the EHD and reight click on the iPhoto library there and show package contents - are the photos in the masters folder  (look - do NOT change anything) - if they are not then you need to have another source for them
For the future copy and paste is NOT a good way to work with the iPhoto library - it is best to drag it to the new location to be sure that an exact copy is made

  • Reduced frame size results in increased file size (?!)

    Hello
I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
I exported from FinalCut into a QuickTime file, the file size is 485MB.
Then I used QuickTIme Pro to change the movie into the above frame size, and add a letter box.
The resulting file is over 6GB in files size! How can this be? I used no compression and these settings: no compression, millions of colours, Best Quality, Apple Lossless sound, 48.000MHz, Mono.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash).
Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.

I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
According to a Viddler "staff" member on their forum, the player is 545x408. Therefore I would try one of the following:
544x408 (4:3 aspect) 544x306 (16:9 aspect) (closest match disregarding macro blocks)
    512x384 (4:3 aspect) 512x288 (16:9 aspect) (long file up-scaling macro-blocked)
    576x432 (4:3 aspect) 576x324 (16:9 aspect) (short file down-scaling macro-blocked)
To me, a "QuickTime file" is anything you can stuff into an MOV file container, or a more loose definition, anything compatible with the QT Player and currently installed QT components. With regard to going from 485 MBs to 6 GBs, your file size is directly related to the total (audio + video) data rate used for compression. Not compressing a video makes it bigger while the higher the compression, the smaller the file.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash). Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.
Since the target for the Flash target conversion is 448 kbps (400 kbps video + 48 kbps audio), the same staff member recommended H.264 multi-pass video compression at 768 kbps and AAC mono audio compression at 64 kbps with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. Splitting the difference between the staff recommendation and your apparent worry about quality loss during re-compression, I would suggest this as a maximum level of compression and likely try a total data rate in the 1500-1600 kbps range which should yield something on the order of 12.25 MBs/min for output for initial tests. You can, of course adjust rates up or down depending on the duration of your file upload in order to meet the 500 MB limit and satisfy quality considerations.

  • Batch file size reduction is increasing file size

CS3 on G5 dual. I am prepping images from my clients catalog for the web. Large image and thumbs. I batch converted the large images for web and have a bunch of images at roughly 24k-56K. I duped the folder, renamed to add a T to end of file name to signify thumbnails. I have an action to reduce file size 50% which is about what I want. I ran a few test files and all 6 of them blew up to 96K-124K even though the file is half the size (5x8 to 2.5x4) while remaining 72 dpi.
Client *thinks* the hosting software will generate thumbs for images from the larger images but isn't sure and is requesting I supply thumbs just in case.

The client has a shopping cart and I would have assumed giving her one size (5x8) which strikes me as overly large but she specified that size (or the nearest proportional equivalent) would be sufficient and the database for the web store would generate thumbs on the fly but the support at the hosting company is abysmal and she doesn't want to pay me to spend a few hours figuring this out.
I don't know what SFW is. Here's a screen shot of my settings for 50%:
    My action
I posted this over in the Lounge as I didn't get a reply here. Here's a link that shows my action in a QT movie. Weirdly enough, I accidentally deleted my save for web action and can no longer batch export a folder to web jpegs:

  • Avi file size compared to m2v file size

I saved a movie clip in MPEG for computer playback.  The file size was 112MB.  The preset was H.264 1440x1080i 25, no export audio, the codec was MainConcept H.264 Video, TV standard was automatic, frame dimensions were 720 by 480, frame rate was 29.97, field order was automatic, fixed aspect ratio was automatic, level was 4.1, bitrate encoding was VBR, 2 Pass, and Bitrate level was high.  I then saved the file in AVI and the file size was 426MB.  The preset was Microsoft AVI, no export audio, the video codec was Cinepak Codec by Radius, quality was 100, size was 720 by 480, frame rate was 29.97, field type was lowere first and aspect was square pixels.  Why would the file size nearly quadruple and what can I do to get the AVI file size down below 400MB?  Thanks.
    Steve

Well, for one thing, you're going from one format to another -- but, more so, you're going from one codec (compression system) to another.
The H.264 codec is the one used for creating AVCHD video, although not all H.264 video is AVCHD. It can also be used as a delivery format (that's a format that you display online or play on a computer) -- which seems to be the case here. Your source is apparently from an AVCHD camcorder, although at that file size it must only be about 10 seconds long.
Though that's hard to say too. Codecs can be highly compressed or lightly compressed, so two files using the same codec and the same file format can be very different in size!
The Cinepak codec is also a delivery format, though it uses a completely different codec system as well as being for a different file format (AVI). You would neer use a file with a Cinepak codec as source material for editing. It's a highly compressed delivery format. Convert the file to a DV-AVI (an AVI using the DV codec) and it will likely be many times that size.

  • I can't open my iphoto library on an external disk (78 gb ntfs); if i copy the files on the iMac the file is smaller and not usable. how can i recover my photo?

    hi all,
i'm using the last version of iPhoto and i save my library on a western digital external USB drive; the drive is formatted in NTFS; i usually use tuxera to access and browse the files.
Unfortunately, i don't know why, i access this drive in read only mode, so iPhoto doesn't accept the library any more; i tried to copy the library on the iMac but the copied file is really smaller (54 gb instead on the 78 on the drive), and iphoto doesn't accept it.
i need to find a solution and to recover my library, i've no other copies?!
tuxera doesn't open any other ntfs drive i think the problem is there, but i have to finf other solutions to recover my photos.
thank you all for any suggestion.

This problem is entirely due to this:
the drive is formatted in NTFS
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Do you get any error messages when you try and copy the file back to your Mac?
Do you have a back up?

  • I have iPhoto 11 on my macbook. I want to export photos to another iPhoto library on an external hard drive. How can I do this.

I have run out of space on my internal hard drive on my macbook and I want to create another iPhoto library on an external hard drive using most of the photographs already on the hard drive.
I did this easily on an old G4 mac and an old version of iphoto. I simply imported the photographs from the library already on the hard drive to the new library I created on the external hard drive.
It does not seem to be possible to do the same thing using iPhoto 11.
I have no idea where to find the files on the mac to do it the more direct way by just importing the files.
    Any ideas?

Here's one way to do what you want:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
c: Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Itunes library size versus itunes music file size

I am a relative newcomer to Macs and completely stumped.
I have roughly 4 GB of music in my itunes library. I bought an 8 GB flash drive and tried to copy my library folder onto the drive per the instructions I found on the Apple site. I got an error message that the library folder was too large for the flash drive. I checked the folder and it said it was 8 GB, roughly double what it shows in my itunes library. I went and opened most of the folders and I did not see any duplicates. All of the files appeared to be music. No podcasts or the like. I am puzzled. Why would the folder be twice the size of the library. I figured the flashdrive would be plenty large enough.

This is almost certainly due to limitations in the MS FAT16 or 32 formatting on your flashdrive.
Assuming you have nothing on the flashdrive yet, launch Disk Utility (in your Applications > Utilities folder), select your flashdrive in the list on the left, then click the Erase tab. Choose Mac OS EXtended in Volume Format, give the drive a name, then click Erase. This will reformat the flashdrive in a much more Mac-friendly system (though it won't be readable on a PC).
Hopefully this will cure the problem.

  • My firefox display and appearrance suddenly changed to a huge size and I WANT TO CHANgE THE HUGE LAYOUT. How?

My Firefox homepage used to appear as a one page size when I opened the homepage. One day I signed onto the computer and the homepage size and layout had changed to a '''huge large print version that does not even fit on my whole computer screen.''' I have to scroll from side to side to see one end of the open page to the other. It is terrible and unusable. The font size changed from this to a 60 font size. I did not choose this change and do not know how to undo this problem. Please help.

    Hi,
Please try pressing '''Ctrl''' + '''0''' (zero) on the keyboard. Alternatively '''View''' ('''Alt''' + '''V''') > '''Zoom''' > '''Reset'''.
