Compression & Exporting

Hi guys-
Hope I'm not missing something really obvious here. Couldn't find much in the search. A while back I asked a question in the forum about how to fit my 2+ hr project on a DVD using iDVD to burn it. I was replied to and received a few tips on what to change the bit rate to and use dolby encoding. After knowing the details, I never could figure out how to change them and how to export it. QT compression? what settings? Use compressor? MPEG2 or 3? I'm lost. Thanks in advance!
-Jack

The problem with using iDVD to do this is you have less control in building your compression settings.
Now -- they TELL me iDVD can hold 2 hours now... but I'm still not sure as I've never tried it.
Your BEST bet would be to use DVDSP to burn the compression you made in COMPRESSOR... go back to your original post and take a look at the settings they suggested to you.
HOWEVER -- if you REALLY need to do it in iDVD --- Inside FCP... File - Export - Quicktime Movie... use current settings and don't worry about checking SELF-Contained movie... leave it unchecked.
Drag THAT file onto iDVD. Check the preferences in iDVD and see if you can't change the compression settings to make it a 2 hour movie on a single disc.
Good luck, -- you might want to post this in the iDVD forum.

PIPE 와 COMPRESS 를 사용한 export
    =================================
    $mknod /tmp/exp_pipe p
    $compress < /tmp/exp_pipe > /dev/rmt/tx4 &
    $exp system/manager file=/tmp/exp_pipe full=y and other options

    $mknod /tmp/imp_pipe p
    => import 를 위한 /tmp/imp_pipe 생성하십시오
    $uncompress < /dev/rmt/tx4 > /tmp/imp_pipe &
=> pipe 를 통과 하게될 화일의 압축을 풀어서 tape device /dev/rmt/tx4 로

  • High Quality HD footage Need to compress/export to fit onto a DVD!

So, basically I have 58 min. worth of HQ, HD footage (with burnt in time code) that I need to fit onto a playable DVD (that will be burnt using DVD Studio Pro)
Normally, I'd just export using QuickTime movie - however after doing so, my file size was 89.52 GB, which obviously is huge.
What is the best way to go about compressing or exporting this so that it will fit onto a DVD or Dual Layer DVD.
I need to send this to the client, and the quality really doesn't have to be amazing, as this is just for them to view and choose which footage they want to keep, etc. The quality need to be decent enough to view, essentially.
I used FCP and DVD Studio pro -- but really just basic stuff for the most part. I am not super familiar with compressor and all that lingo, so the simplest way to go about this would be best, ha.
The raw footage was shot using a SONY HDCAM 1080i 59.97 (16x9) - if this helps.
Digitized the footage using pro-ress in FCP...so yeah I don't what other info might be needed, sorry.

#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Scripting for GarageBand: import; compress; export

    Hi there -
I'm not sure where the best place to post this is, so forgive me if this was not the best guess. I'm doing research on language and have a workflow that involves collecting thousands of recordings of individual words:
         I record someone for half an hour;
         splice that single audio file into hundreds or thousands of single-word chunks;
         export each splice as a separate audio file;
         (would like to) use automator / script to automatically rename the resultant files with an alphanumeric prefix and numerical postfix;
         import each of these files into GarageBand (or StudioOne) individually;
         compress the file to reduce dynamic range;
export the finalized file into a designated folder.
I have some very basic background in programming (primarily MatLab, but very basic dabbling in C), but I know nothing about scripting for Macs. In the long term, I'm interested in learning how to do this, but in the short term I'm looking at a lot of work that needs to get procssed and just need a quick fix for automating so that I don't have to (continue to) do this manually for each file!
In case it is of interest to anyone who may respond: the ultimate goal fo the process is to attain as constant a volume across all the files as possible: I record many different people, in different settings over the course of months or years and was told that compression will help standardize the playback volume. The reason for compressing each file individually is because even within a single recording session, the individual's voice may fluctuate notably as they move closer and further from the mic, or even if there is a single loud noise during recording - it would act as the reference point for compression, even though it was an anamoaly.
Finally, to clarify the questions involved here:
How can I automate the last 4 or so (or more?!) points from the above workflow? or Any suggestions where to find someone who could do this?
Alternatievely: suggestions on standardizing volume playback that does not involve the above process (NB: the standardization has to be as professional as possible, so I don't want to compromise the result for a simpler workflow).
Where can I start to learn more about scripting on the Mac so I can tackle such issues on my own, in the future?
    Kind regards,
    Rax Adam

Yes, the Keynote presentation slides/project is set for 1920x1080, the reason is I'm outputting via a high lumens projector that natively projects at 1920x1080p.
Even though a Macbook Pro does not have a screen that size, the Macbook can send out even larger than 1920x1080, but I am limiting the output to the native screen res of the projector.

  • Help needed for a Final Cut Express project Compression

    Hi guys,
This is my first post as I usually find answers to all my questions reading through the various thread. I just haven't found an answer to my last pb yet hence the new topic. Hope you guys can help.
I have got this very simple slideshow that I need to burn onto DVD. The issue is that it's LONG. It's an hour and 17 minutes and i have no idea what is the best way to compress/export this so I can burn this on a single layer DVD.
I tried various options and it suddenly stops because I "only" have 13GB of free space on my macbook. 13GB!!!! How will this ever fit on a DVD? and this is with medium quality...
    please help!
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi Sasha.
Woke up this morning and the burning never started because the file was too big. I exported the file from FCE and it was 16GB! iDVD never managed to fit it in my single layer DVD. Am I using iDD correctly?
I am thinking I need to compress this further on FCE right? I don't understand why such a simple movie (although very long) can take so much space. It's only about 900MB of JPGs and 120MB of music. I don't want to bring the quality down to "low" because it won't look good.
So far, I have been exporting using quicktime conversions and I tried the following formats: tried exporting in AVI and QuickTime Movie. For the compression type, I tried DVCPRO50-NTSC on medium quality (with AVI) and Photo-JPG & DVCPRO50-NTSC again (with QuickTime Movie) both on slightly better than medium quality. Results all were well above 10GB.
    Please, help!
    Thanks.
    Hope you can help.

  • Need help with compression rates with Sorenson Squeeze 6, Compressor3.5.2

Hopefully somebody can help me with this...
I am running Sorenson Squeeze 6 on a Mac to try and compress some Apple ProRes 422 videos into an MPEG-2 file. The file will be played in a DirectX application, running on a PC with Windows 7. When being played it looks to be heavily compressed, and I need help with some of the compression settings.
Let me get more into detail...
So I have received a Quicktime .mov that has been encoded with FCP using Apple ProRes 422 compression at 720x486 , 29.97 fps, 40.29 Mbit/s , and the file size is 515.7mb.
So, this is the type of file I will have to compress into an MPEG-2, that will be playing on a...
1.6 GHz Intel Atom 330 Dual Core
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Graphics
    1Gb DDR2 800 Ram
    32Gb SATA Solid State Drive
    Windows 7 Home
Here is what I have done so far on my Mac using Sorenson Squeeze 6 :
I have brought the original file in and created some presets.
First off, I am encoding these MPEG-2 videos using an elementary stream type so I can mux the files using MPEG Streamclip...
Here is a screenshot of the settings I am using in Sorenson :
    - I have changed many of the data rate settings as low as 3000 Kbps, and as high as 15,000 Kbps, and the end result looks essentially the same
    - The audio isn't a problem, so I'm not going to address that.
    - I have used the crop/deinterlace filter and also not used the filter, and it makes a big difference, so obviously it needs to be deinterlaced.
From there I will get the .m2v file and the .m2a file, and then mux those with MPEG Streamclip.
So, I have done 8 different Pre-sets all with various settings playing primarily with the data rate, and the method from 2-pass vbr all the way to 1-pass cbr.
So again, my end result that is playing back on the windows 7 box (the specs that are listed above) looks to be heavily compressed and pixelation occurs.
    - I have also done the exact same with Apple's Compressor, and have gotten better results muxing while compressing, however the end result still tends to be the same, however the end result is much better. I have gone through 8 or so different compression export settings, and just overall still have the same issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You are using a custom layout so my directions don't make any sense...
For the future, you can set this up in DVD SP's Preferences:
Using the Standard window layout the things to play with would be like the screenshot below:

ThanksI assume you want to use the traditional export/import tool, if you are in unix / linux environment what about using unix pipes compressed export?
    Example: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~hause011/code/exp-imp-db.ksh

  • Expdb using Unix pipe command for max compression

I think the answer to this is NO, but I thought I'd ask the questions anyway, in case some of the Oracle geniuses on this site have figured out a way around this.
We have been using the existing exp/imp commands for years, due to the fact that we can pipe the output through a pre-setup file that will compress the data as it is written. Since we have moved onto the 10g and now the v11 software, we are starting to what to utilize the parallelism that is afforded in expdp, but don't want to deal with the space required for non-fully compressed exports that occurs with expdp.
So the question is, has anyone figured out a way to use expdp and using 'on the fly' compression like you could do with the old exp utility on Unix boxes??
    Any help would be appreciated....

Unfortunately, no--it has to do with the parallel nature of the file ops that prevents compression through a pipe. However, if you buy the Compression option in 11--you can compress on the fly.
    See this white paper.

    Hi,
we are having a 50GB size of Schema but the Dumpfile size will be 5GB only,
now what the question is ,
How can we Export this 50gb Schema using the 5GB Dumpfile?
    Is this is posible?
Give me the solution for this with query?

Create a compressed export on the fly. Depending on the type of data, you probably can export up to 10 gigabytes to a single file. This example uses gzip. It offers the best compression I know of, but you can also substitute it with zip, compress or whatever.
    # create a named pipe
    mknod exp.pipe p
    # read the pipe - output to zip file in the background
    gzip < exp.pipe > scott.exp.gz &
    # feed the pipe
    exp userid=scott/tiger file=exp.pipe ...

  • Using GB'08 to create Chapters for iMovie'08 -- audio does not export

After fighting though learning Final Cut Express (oops I mean iMovie '08), I got a movie together. Then I wanted chapters, so I found a great article (http://imovie08.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-add-chapter-markers.html) showing that the only way to make them in a logical way was via GarageBand'08.
However, when I send the movie to iDVD, the audio does not make it (silent when I play the movie - either in preview mode or on the burned disc). Furthermore, I tried to "Export Movie to Disk" to see if GB was not outputting or if it was an iDVD issue of receiving. I found that the export also came over with no audio.
    Please advise!

I am having the same exact problem. I have Final Cut Pro on my production computer at work, but I wanted to do some personal stuff at home on my MB Pro. I have like 15 old family 8mm home videos that I want to convert to DVD's for my parents for Christmas, so I used some of my hardware for A to D conversion to get these marathon 2 hour movies on my ext. Hard Drive. But of course you can't make chapter markers in the new iMovie '08, so I have to export to "media browser" and then switch to GarageBand to do this simple task. But unfortunately when I "share" from GarageBand to iDVD, disk, or even iTunes I get absolutely no audio. Ridiculous.
Not to mention the fact that these home videos are two hours long and it takes a freakin hour for it to compress/export just to find out there's an issue. And even before I realized there was no audio, I was having an amazingly awesome time in iDVD as it was lagging so badly that I considered putting my TV on to pass the time while I clicked and held on one of the folders waiting for it to highlight so I could move it. Then it was great to find out that all that time I spent in iDVD was in vain because there was no audio on the movies anyways!!!! yaaayyyy!!!
Obviously other people have presented this same GarageBand movie sharing audio issue and have received no good solutions as of yet, so I don't even know why I'm here posting this. It's 4:00 AM, and I've been fussing with this crap for over 8 hours now. I'm just going to do it all at work on more capable software (Final Cut, DVD Studio).
I just figured that I didn't have to do anything special to these home-videos editing-wise, why not just take advantage of my "cool" new iLife software? And do it on my spare time at home? Why not? Because they've made iLife so retard-proof that it's self destructing before my very tired eyes.
    iLife? more like cryLife.

No version, no platform... Why? Too difficult? Strain on your fingers?
The answer is platform and version dependent!
Anyway: on 9i and before : Winblows: Set the compression attribute of the directory or drive you plan to compress to, make sure this attribute is inherited.
Unix: export to a pipe, compress the input of this pipe.
Scripts are floating on this forum and on the Internet everywhere (also on Metalink) everyone should be able to find them with little effort.
On 10g: expdp can generate compressed exports.

  • Exporting small film for internet

    Hi,
I'm editing a trailer to post on an internet web site. What's the best compression, exporting settings, for best quality without the clip taking forever to open and view?

    Go to http://www.proapptips.com
Register there (free and safe) and go to the downloads area. In there you'll see some Compressor 1 droplets that you'll be able to drag your movie onto and have it compress it for you.
    Should work well.
Also -- you might want to think about going to Tiger and using QT7. Much better quality using m4v or h.264 -- but those don't have complete market saturation yet so some computers won't be able to watch them.

  • Best compression

I am working on a FCP4.5 project in which I have included chapter markers that DO NOT export when I use MPEG2 compression. This issue has been addressed before on this site and I was advised to export as DVPAL (I am working with PAL). I did so but the quality of the "huge" .mov file that I got seems really poor to my eyes as compared to what I got with MPEG2.
    My questions :
    1) do I dream ? is there a difference in quality using these two formats ? Settings for DV were "optimal, DVPal"
    2) will I loose again my chapters if I go now from my .mov to MPEG2 via QTPro ?
    3) am I doing the wrong thing ?
    4) I do not understand why I get the chapters in some cases (I thought the problem was solved after discussing the issue on this forum) and why not in others....
I think that I am doing the same thing all over..but sometimes I get the chapters imported correctly in DVDPro sometimes not...I am getting somewhat nervous with that problem....and would like to find a way to get out of it...
    5) could someone kindly tell me what is the best export-compression settings to use to get nice results (I eventually want to make a DVD for TV)and not loose my chapter markers.
I could not find any help in the FCP manual regarding comparative quality of compression/export .
    Many thanks in advance
    Bernard

When I make up a DVD using DVD SP-3 I export from FCP HD using "Quicktime Movie" and select "Current Setings."
Footage is usually originated on DigiBeta but I edit in the DV codec.
Checking the option ""DVD Studio Pro Markers" in the Markers box transfers the Marker info, (assuming the markers have been set up as Chapter Markers on the FCP timeline and not just markers.
Every time the markers don't go across to DVD SP-3 I find that it's finger trouble on my part and I didn't set up the original Marker as a "Chapter" Marker.
I make a QT movie, (self contained for convenience but I guess you could make a reference movie,) and then I drag that to the assets box in DVD SP-3.
So far the quality has been great and the markers always translate. When I build the DVD I sometimes have to shift a chapter marker occasionally if it doesn't fit the GOP structure of the DVD but this can be done on the DVD SP-3 timeline.
If memory serves, (and this was a problem I had when making MPEG-1's with Compressor,) the sync issue could be resolved by first making a QT movie, (or reference movie,) from FCP and then dragging that into Compressor. Exporting directly into Compressor from FCP always gave me audio sync issues. Perhaps the same is true with other compression types...?
    Hope this helps.

  • Compression Porblems, see my video

Okay, I have tried so many settings to make this video clearer. First, when I export it to the desktop and play it, it is crystal clear. The problem arises when I go to upload it to either MY SPACE or YOU TUBE. Before you say it's there fault, it's not. There are plenty of clear music videos on both You Tube and My Space. Look at my example, it has a slight blurr or haze to it. How do I get better compression export and eliminate the blur or fuzz. I tried H.264 and Sorenson 3. I tried them at a small aspect ratio and a large aspect. I'm wondering if it is the Frame rate or Key Frame rate. I set the Frame rate at 15 and the Key Frame at 24. What am I doing wrong? I interlaced it, rendered it properly, etc... Look at example on my MY SPACE site - the music video that I did. I don't get it becasue my expert is so clear and nice. Thank you for your help!!!
    Go to: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=874304 24

For YouTube that looks really good. You'll need to up the data rate and frame rate to get better quality. How big is that file? How long's the video? What's it shot on? There's a lot of soft edges and motion backgrounds in the video that consume a ton of compression band width. Look at the the full frames shots of the guy in yellow with the light behind him. The image is really clan, with good edges. You'll not see that when you fill the image with lots of soft edges and motion. There's too much action and the image is too difficult to compress sharply so the whole frame tends to soften. It's not only what you do to compress it, it also what you do to shoot it and edit it and composite it. If you want sharp clean, hard edge images you need to shoot and edit and create a program that lends itself to that kind of compression.

  • Why won't chapter markers export?

I have tried again and again to export my chapter markers but they just won't. What am I doing wrong?
    Eric

If you don't have any other markers (e.g. compression), export your movie to "include chapter markers" instead of "all markers."
Actually, if you're exporting for DVD (either Compressor, DVDSP, or iDVD), you're supposed to select DVD Studio Pro Markers, not All Markers.
If you need the techie explanation, selecting All Markers writes all marker information to a single text track in QuickTime (do a Command-J of your movie in QuickTime to observe this). Compressor & DVDSP cannot parse the chapter information from this single text track.
When selecting DVD Studio Pro Markers, you're writing three kinds of marker info - Chapter, Compression and Cut - across 2 text tracks in QuickTime. DVDSP & Compressor can correctly parse the chapter info (and, because of the presence of compression and cut markers, your encodes should come out better).
As Nathan mentions, selecting Chapter Markers works as well, but you write chapter info to single text track in QuickTime, leaving out the other marker information (which makes a real difference with troublesome footage).
