Compression for Quicktime...?

Hello All,
I have been following a bunch of courses on Lynda.com and am truly impressed with the video quality of these courses, and how nicely they download, or should I say stream.
Perhaps this question isn't entirely related to compressor, but I was wondering if somebody could give me some insight as to how they achieve those results, and how they deliver it via the net.
Thanks

If these videos that you are viewing are truly streaming not progressive download. You need to have a streaming server to place the video on, $$$. And you need to prepare the videos for streaming: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/tutorials.html
Your right streaming videos can't be downloaded. The only way to capture these videos is to use a screen capture program like Snapz Pro X: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/

  • Proper compression for Quicktime Export

I have FCP 5. I'm currently trying to export a 90 minute project to Quicktime to burn a DVD in IDVD. I am using a dual 1gig G4 with a Lacie 250gig hard drive, that currently has 165 gig available. I am using 65 gig for the project. I initially chose the export quicktime conversion command and chose NONE for compression settings. Timeline stated it would take five hours to complete transfer. With 1 hour left it crashed stating "General Error". Tried this twice over the last two days. FCP manual says to use Quicktime Movie command and current settings. Trying this, but timeline states 11 hours for conversion! Is this right? Is G4 processors too slow for FCP5? Please help!
    ed

If you completely render your timeline and do an audio mixdown before doing the export, the export should be faster. Seems to me that I've read quite a few posts about trouble with exports if the render hasn't been done first.
Although I've never had any luck with it, you can also export a non-self contained QT for use in iDVD. It should export much faster as it simply creates a file that "references" the existing clips in the timeline. Might be worth a try.

  • Tweaking compression for YouTube

I am trying to make the best possible files for uploading to YouTube. I am working with HDV Quicktimes exported from FCP and compressing using the AIC codec and a frame size of 640x360, as YouTube requires for 16:9. The longest file is 10:30 and comes in at 1.14 gig, just over the YouTube limit. I can't find a way to change the codec to reduce the file size. Is there any way to adjust quality with this codec?
Changing the frame size from 1440x1080 to 640x360 would have largely done the trick, I would have thought. But it doesn't seem to make much difference. In fact, I exported 2 versions out of FCP, one at the original frame size and one at 640x360 and both files are the same size! Can't for the life of me figure out why that is.
If anyone has any tips about compressing for YouTube channels, please let me know. Ideally we would upload files just under a gig so that YouTube's compression doesn't completely kill the quality.
    Thanks.

I followed everything kenstone said. Still having problems. Here's the new link...

  • Best compression for ken burns effect

    Hey,
I am doing a 2 minute animation that is all ken burns effect.  The size is 720 x 1280. On the images that have a lot of detail like brickwork, there is a noticeable pop where you can see compression for a few frames and then it clears up.
I am making a h264 mpg movie straight out of AE.  Any ideas?

Yes. I have an idea. Don't do that.
AE is definitely not the best tool for making an H.264. Render an intermediate file out of AE (lossless or nearly lossless, such as Quicktime with the PNG codec, Quicktime with the PhotoJPEG codec, Cineform, or DNxHD). Then use the Adobe Media Encoder to make the H.264. Use multipass compression. Adjust the keyframe distance, etc. The cool thing is that you won't have to render your AE comp over and over again for each time you need to test a different setting in your compression. You're just running off of the already rendered intermediate file.

  • Trying to compress a QuickTime after it finishes rendering - No luck so far

I'm pretty new to Automator, and what I want to do seems fairly simple, but I cannot seem to make it work.
Basically what I am trying to do is to compress a Quicktime movie after it has finished render out of After Effects.
I am using the "QuickTime Compression Actions and Workflow 1.0" found here:
    http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Automator-Actions---Workflows/QuickTime-Compression -Actions-and-Workflow.shtml
When I have set up an Automator Plug-In as a folder action, it doesn't do anything when a file renders to that folder. If I physically drag and drop the file to that folder it will work, but that defeats the purpose.
I have also tried some weird workarounds like rendering a single still frame AFTER the rendered movies is competed, called "finish.jpg", and then making a workflow that goes - Filter Finder Item (name - is equal to - finish.jpg) > Ask for Finder Item (which is pointed to the folder the files will render too) > Get Folder Contents > Filter Finder Items (name extension - contains - mov) > Compress QuickTime Using Most Recent Settings.
Now this "mostly" works, but the problem is that when it runs, it pops up a dialog box for the "Filter Finder Items" & requires me to click "Continue", and then the "Ask for Finder Items" pops up dialog asking me to choose a folder.
Obviously I am trying to figure out a way to get this done without my input.
Not sure I under or over explained this, but I would love some help or pointers.
Automator seems really cool and powerful but it feels like it is missing some simple key elements.

An Automator workflow is only as successful as the actions that it uses. There are many third party actions out there that can fill in the gaps. Folder Actions do not work very well if they are repeatedly triggered or triggered while the script is still running, so this may not be the way to go.
What are using to render your movie? Are you using the application itself, or one of Adobe's Automator actions? An action should return the results of what it does, so a render action should return the paths of the rendered files so that they can be used by following actions.

  • Compression for mov and flv

    Might be a dumb question, but . . .
Is H.264 a compression codec for Quicktime movies only? Not for Flash videos?
My CS3 version of Flash Video Encoder seems to offer On2 VP6 and Sorenson Spark as the compression codecs for Flash video, flv. Are there other codecs for use with flv?

F4v is h264 flash. Its in cs5, though im sure there are other tools out there to encode f4v's.

  • Compression for DVD help

    Hello,
I need some help using compressor.
I made an animated film using final cut pro. My finished project is 1440x960 which is a 3x2 aspect ratio with square pixels. These settings were used because my source material was still frames from a pro digital SLR camera.
I'm trying to make a DVD copy of it using DVD Studio Pro via Compressor. I realize I need to use the letterbox scale effect to get it to a 4x3 ratio without looking horizontally squashed on a TV, but I'm not sure how to figure out what percent to set it at. It's somewhere around 95 percent based on just looking at it, but is there a way to know EXACTLY what that percent should be?
If I use Quicktime to compress my movie, it automatically sets the correct letterbox scaling but it doesn't, at least not obviously, let you know what percent it uses. In addition, shouldn't Compressor do a better job compressing than Quicktime Compressor? Does it even output the required format for DVD's?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Use photoshop and make your photos 720 x 480, 72dpi.
    Then import them into FCP.
Edit them up, export out as quicktime movie.
    Then import them into Compressor.
Encode them with 7.0 mbps average, 8.2 max, 2 pass vbr, best.
For audio, use dolby digital, 224kbps, -31 normalization.
    Should be fine.

  • Animation compression for DVD

I have a square pixel after effects project which is around 10gb rendered at DV Pal square pixels and animation. I wish to present this with a laptop & projector. When compressing the file through basic DV Pal settings it looses much of the quality.
Is there a compression for putting animations onto DVD's with a sqaure pixel ratio that doesn't stretch the pixels for DVD - or am I being really daft here!! Is it possible for DVD's to play square pixels??
    Many thanks

If you're going to have a laptop anyway, why not just install QuickTime (if it isn't already installed) and just play the file directly. That way, you're not losing anything quality-wise.
DVD makes no provision (that I'm aware of) for displaying non-standard frame types and MPEG-2 is your only compression option.

  • Itunes is asking for Quicktime Version 7.5.5. or higher before opening

    Hi there,
recently I had to reinstall my complete software by using the installation disc that came with my macbook. After reinstalling I updated my itunes-Version to 5.2.2. Afterwards, by clicking on the itunes-Logo in the dock in order to start itunes, I have received the failure notice "Itunes needs quicktime player version 7.5.5. or higher"
I have checked my current quicktime version, it says it is version no. 7.7. (1680.25) in greater letters and below written in smaller letters there's a different version no. saying 7.4.1. (14).
That leaves me with the question, how to find out which quicktime version is correct. And, if no. 7.7. is correct, what can I do about itunes to be able to open the programm again? Thanks in advance for any advice, you can give me.

Run System Profiler.  Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."
Check under both Applications and Frameworks for Quicktime.  Applications are the actual Player application itself.  I believe Frameworks is the underlying system software support.  If you see something different there it might be that about which iTunes is complaining.  On my computer both say the same, but I'm not having the issue.
I'm guessing here but if you re-installed the system using Archive and Install,  your applications were left intact and that's why your Player is 7.7, but all your system software (includingQT framework) was replaced with earlier versions which may be why the you're seeing different versions.  iTunes doesn't need the Player, but it does need the underlying QT software.

Hello everybody. I am trying to reinstall my Quicktime 7 Pro after having my MacBook OSX 10.5.8 cleaned out following a hacking. I have Quicktime player and I reregistered with the purchased registration code for Quicktime 7 pro. It seems to be successfully registered with "Quicktime 7 Pro" appearing under the inserted registration code but it is not showing in Applications folder and I do not know how to access it or what to do. Thanks for reading this. I hope you can help me. Aidan from Dublin, Ireland.

  • How do i use parallel compression for 4 drum tracks in Logic pro 7.2.3 Please

how do i use parallel compression for 4 drum tracks in Logic pro 7.2.3 Please. my version is 7.2.3 and my son did his drums on 4 tracks. 2 OH's 1 Kick and 1 Snare. Were confused because we cant figure out how to do parallel compression on the older logic version 7.2.3?

I can't remember when the Aux tracks became the new buss tracks, so I'll spell this out using busses.
The way I do it, is I assign all my drum tracks to a buss, say buss 1.
Then, on buss 2, I assign it's INPUT to buss 1.
So buss 1 (all the drums) are feeding into buss 2 simultaneously.
Put a compressor on buss 2, turn the fader down all the way, then as the track is playing, bring buss 2's fader up slowly, until you hear the effect you're after.
You could also do this using sends on the 4 drum tracks, set to feed the buss with the compressor on it.
I hope I haven't forgotten anything particular to that version of Logic. See if this helps...

  • Hello there - I am sharing an iPhoto library across two accounts on the same computer - it works fine EXCEPT for Quicktime movies - they play on one account and claim I don't have the rights on the other - all permissions are on and ok?

Hello there - I am sharing an iPhoto library across two accounts on the same computer - it works fine EXCEPT for Quicktime movies - they play on one account and claim I don't have the rights on the other - all permissions are on and ok?

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions
