Compression software

I got a cd with a MS Word file (ms.doc) and can't open it since I don't have MS Word. I don't want to spend the $40 plus just to open one file. I found a site (zamzar) that will let you convert files but the file size limit is 100 mb and my file is 200 mb. My Stuffit Drop Box isn't working at all (won't open). Is there any (user friendly) compression software for Mac OS that will compress an ms.doc file? Or am I trying to do the impossible?

Hi, Dan Tee. Download the freeware, open-source word processor AbiWord or the freeware, open-source office application suite NeoOffice. Either will read (and write) Word files just fine, and each is an excellent piece of software in its own right.
It is NOT true at all that Word files from a PC are incompatible with Macs. They are fully cross-platform. Mac and Windows versions of Word have used exactly the same native file format since 1998. In addition to the freeware WPs I've linked above, nearly all other currently-available Mac word processors can also read and write Word files.
Compression is not the answer to your problem, either. Compressing a file makes it inaccessible to the software that created it until it is decompressed again.

What is the best file compression software on Mac OSX in terms of both user-friendliness and performance?

Stuffit Deluxe's native .sitx archives make the smallest files. You can even set the compression rate. Smaller will take more time, but of course, saves more space. It's all I and my client's use. It even compresses .jpg images quite a bit, whereas .zip does almost nothing to them.
There are drawbacks to all formats, though. Zip and Stuffit both do a lousy job on video files. RAR will usually cut the size down by at least half. But the only way to create RAR files on the Mac is through the Terminal. It astounds me that no one has come up with an OS X native application for this. Or that Stuffit hasn't added it to their choices. Stuffit can open RAR files, so they obviously know how the compression scheme works. Why not add the option to create them?
As far as someone opening the Stuffit files you create? All a person needs to do is download the free Expander if they don't own Stuffit Deluxe or Standard.

An advanced compressing software for video confrencing

I have recently developed a video confrencing software and I am using H264 codec for comprassion which helped me to connect 6 people at a time .
but I understand that I need a more advanced codec that is capable of compression to a much higher degree
that can help me to connect tens of people or possibly over hundred people at a time and offcourse this compressing software should work with flash.

However, on the new iMac and os 10.8.2 it does not allow installing programs via discs

The OS comes set with “Gatekeeper” activated. This is designed to force you to purchase software through the App Store.
Most people I know disable gatekeeper, that way you can install software from anywhere.
Many software developers offer downloads on thier own web stores. If you download software directly from the developer, not from the Apple App store. Gatekeeper is simple to override for an individual app.
Personally, I find gatekeeper to be “junior high school” I have disabled it completely.
Open System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General, and choose "Anywhere" under "Allow applications downloaded from". You may have to press the padlock at the bottom left corner of Security and Privacy pane before being able to select Anywhere

Compression software for Vado HD 2nd

Could someone reccommend compression software for a Vado HD 2nd. Unless i can find some way to compress the rew files(most 3 minutes or less) the video is virtually worthless for internet updoading or emailing as it is mcuh two large in raw format as even short videos are about 50mbs.

First, I suggest that you get a copy of Tom Wolsky's book Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop and also read some of Ken Stone's excellent articles. (Note: although many articles are written for FinalCut Pro, they are generally applicable to FinalCut Express also). These two resources will help you get up & operating in no time.
In regard to video on the web, QuickTime (and as a consequence iMovieHD and FCEHD) does a right nice job, and there are quite a few choices built in. You're right, H.264 does require QT7 however since the QT player is free, I don't see that as a problem in the future. H.264 does an amazing job with video quality vs. file size. And while Flash is popular, I don't think I'd say that 'most users' have Flash installed. More likely they have QuickTime, however. Recall those millions of iPod users out there? They all have QuickTime on their systems, both Wintel & Mac, because iTunes itself is a QuickTime application.
In regard to DVDs, if you're using iDVD or DVD Studio Pro, you'll be exporting from FCE via QuickTime anyway.
Finally, I'd suggest getting started with what FCE already has built in. There's quite a bit already there, probably more than you would ever use, unless you envision serious media production for a living.

Ahh, for that you'll need some other software. The built-in zip decoder in the Mac OS is fairly basic and does not cover that. For opening, [Stuffit Expander|http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/stuffit/expander.html] should work and is free. I don't use zip much, and definitely not password protected zip, so I don't know what other utilities might be out there. [BetterZip|http://macitbetter.com> looks promising, but isn't free. Stuffit Deluxe would work but is major overkill if this is all you need.

What are the File Compressions Softwares for mac

Im looking for some zip softwares that i can use with mac osx 10.4 software, i realized that winzip is only for windows based os, but what can i use for the mac to open up zipped files and also be able to zip files to upload.

Zip is built-in to OSX. Double-Click a .zip file to unzip it. To compress (Zip), select some files or folders, Right-Click (Cntrl-Click), and choose "Make Archive".

BEST COMPRESSION SOFTWARE.

I have a project that I shot on my HVX200 at 720PN and edited in a DVCPRO HD 720p 60, 29.97.
I have used Compressor's default "Best" settings for a 90 minute DVD and the quality of the final is pretty crap. What are the best reasonably priced encoding platforms for making DVDs? There has to some better than Compressor.

The default 'best' setting may not be the best for you, of course... they are only starting points from which you can set different settings to improve the overall look of the output.
However, I am not a massive fan of Compressor either, although it is vastly better now than when it first came out. As an alternative you can look at Bitvice or MegaPEG X on the mac. On a PC you have a lot more choice, and one of the better low cost options is Canopus Procoder. You should also look at Cinemacraft, too - incidentally there is a plug in for compressor from Cinemacraft, but it is more costly... although reviews for it are good. Cinemacraft is generally accepted as the best of the best.
Your final option is to ship the work out to a bureau to encode using a hardware encoder, although the software versions available are generally pretty good these days.

How did I get better compression when using GPU acceleration?

I was just making a short, 1:12-long video encoded as H.264 in an MP4 wrapper. I had edited the video in Premiere Pro CC, and was exporting through Adobe Media Encoder at a framerate of 29.97 FPS and a resolution of 1920x1080. I wanted to do a test to see how much GPU acceleration benefits me. So, I ran two different tests, one with and one without. The one with GPU acceleration finished in 2:09. The one without it took 2:40, definately enough to justify using GPU acceleration (my GPU is an NVidia GTX 660 Ti which I have overclocked). I am sure my benefits would be even greater in most videos I make, since this one had relatively few effects.
However, I checked the file sizes out of curiosity, and found that the one made with GPU acceleration was 175 MB in size, and the other was 176 MB. While the difference is pretty small, I am wondering why it exists at all. I checked the bitrates, and the one made with GPU acceleration is 19,824 KB/s, whereas the other is 19,966 KB/s. I used the exact same presets for both. I even re-encoded the videos again just to test it and verify the results, and the second test confirms what the first showed.
So, what I am wondering is: What is it that made this possible, and could this be used to my advantage in future productions?

As I said in my original post, I did test it again. I have also ran other tests, with other sequences, and they all confirm that the final file is smaller when GPU acceleration is used.
Yes, the difference is small but I'm wondering how there can even be a variable at all. If you put a video in and have it spit it out, then do that again, the videos should be the same size. It's a computer program, so the outputs are all based on variables. If the variables don't change, the output shouldn't either. For this reason, I cannot believe you when you say "I can, for example, run exactly the same export on the same sequence more than once, are rarely are they identical in export times or file size."

Best Compression To Use In QT For Saving Videos For DVD

I own a number of DVDs of compliation videos that I'm extracting each video using Cinematzie to create a library of videos clips. If I save a video without any compression, its alsmost the size of the entire DVD. But I also have a choice to save the video clip with compression but am given a large number of choices to select from. I would like to compress a video clips to the best quality and sound possible to eventually burn my own DVD of my favorites. Can someone who has worked with various compression software suggest the best one for me to use. Thanks.

I've has a lot of success with H.264 for the purpose you're speaking of if you're just archiving them to play back on the computer. If you want to output them to dvd to eventually play back on a conventional dvd and ntsc monitor, consider DV/DVC Pro. However, I've also read that H.264 is going to be the standard codec for some of the new HD DVDs (like BluRay).

hi guys, just wanted to point some attention to some great software that is available freely to any manufacturer that creates sequencers. it's time/pitch expansion/compression software and it's called Dirac...for a respectable price there's a full blown version too that offers amazing features.
let's hope that apple include this in their next release of logic pro; whenever that will be i don't know.

By the way, it has been months at this point, but it was great to meet you Shane at NAB earlier this year in the Matrox booth. We spoke about the MXO2, which I am ordering next week. I need a solution for DVCProHD 720p24 up-conversion to HDCAM 1080i 29.97, and the MXO2 seems like a good reasonably price solution for that. My MXO has been a solid output for color correction on my 23" ACD. Much nicer than my Sony 1354q.
