Compression Tips

I need the best compression for my project.
I have studied this fairly extensively and have been doing it for several months.
I have about an hour long documentary that is edited in HDV.
Exported out a quicktime movie (self contained) in sections, just to make fixes later easier. Exported again to compressor.
Compressor settings. for the Mpeg2.
File Extension: m2v
Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
Video Encoder
Format: M2V
Width: 720
Height: 480
Pixel aspect ratio: NTSC CCIR 601/DV (16:9)
Crop: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Frame Controls:
Retiming: Nearest Frame
Resize Filter: Statistical Prediction
Deinterlace Filter: Line Averaging
Adaptive Details: On
Antialias: 0
Detail Level: 0
Field Output: Same as Source
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Field dominance: Bottom first
Average data rate: 5 (Mbps)
2 Pass VBR enabled
Maximum data rate: 7 (Mbps)
High quality
Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
Other info you need to know.
Using: DVD-5.
Audio: ac3
This is pretty good I know. Could have a higher bit rate, but I have other video content on the disc and this is pushing it.
I put this DVD in my player and it just looks bad. Some aliasing (sp), etc..
I put a major motion picture DVD in and it looks awesome.
I realize we are editing in HDV and downconverting to DVD. But what makes their (major pictures) so much better. What settings can I tweak?

MStephens wrote:
OK. I will test that as soon as the current render is complete. I am testing a clip with ALL to best, even rate conversion.
Using Best usually means 5x as much encoding time (over Better) and only about a 5-10% quality gain. I understand you're under pressure to deliver a better encode, but I'm not sure if this is the way to go about it.
Now talk to me about progressive. Should I produce a progressive DVD? Why or why not?
Typically, progressive DVD means NTSC video at 23.98 fps. This is particularly nice if you're working on discs that you know will be viewed on progressive-scan displays (a Plasma or LCD TV, for instance).
However, you can simulate the look of progressive video (despite your material being 29.97 fps) by altering the Frame Control setting for Output Field to Progressive. That will eliminate more interlace artifacting (the combing effect you might see in high-motion scenes) but it can (sometimes) soften the picture too much. As with anything Frame Controls related though, the encoding time added can be brutal.
1. Is there a better compressor than compressor? Or would it just be a waste of time to go buy something else.
Sorenson Squeeze and Innobits' BitVice are two other very popular software encoders. I don't use either, but they are well-regarded (especially by those who've given up on Compressor).
I suppose you could try the demos and see if you get better results. It's hard to say for sure (if something will work better) since compression is highly dependent on the job's content.
2. Why is there such a drastic difference between my disc and a Hollywood disc?
For the most part, they are using far superior source material (10-bit Uncompressed 23.98 HD masters) for their encode and much more powerful hardware-based MPEG-2 encoders that cost 3-5x what your entire editing (hardware/software) setup costs.
Finally, they are producing for replication (discs pressed at a plant) which allows for greater bit rates on their encodes. Where we - producing burned discs - top out at about 7.5 Mbps, replicated discs can safely go higher than 9.0 Mbps.

I have a few wedding projects(1-2 hours)I am trying to export at full hd quality, than burn in idvd. After rendering for 8hrs I receive error code that states "file is too big". Please help? compressing tips without losing quality? or any other exporting alternatives?

    Hey Z,
Thank you for the tip on exporting by media browser (large) from imovie. But of course, if it's not one thing it's another. Now that I figured how to export a large file from imovie, I have an idvd issue. I followed the instructions for burning from idvd and changing the encoding to professional quality and the burn speed to x4, but I am receiving an error that states the following,
Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn your DVD, change the encoder setting in the Project Info window.
    Project:
    - total project duration: 79:04 minutes
    - total project capacity: 4.327 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)
    Menus:
    - number of menus in project: 1 menus
    - total menu duration: 0:39 minutes
    - total menu capacity: 37.370 MB
    Movies:
    - total movies duration: 78:25 minutes
    - total movies capacity: 4.291 GB
I have searched in the idvd forum for similar issues and I am stumped at this point. I have tried deleting the encoding assets and re launching idvd with the changed preferences, and still the same error. I know you mentioned something about free hard drive space available, and I have very little left. 4GB to be exact due to massive hours of non-edited footage. I am not sure if this is why, but I do not recall ever needing free space to burn memory onto a separate dvd. I would be more than happy if I am wrong, and it would be a quick fix. Otherwise, the technical nightmare continues. It's all a learning process and your expertise is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 DVD Compression Audio lag

I have a project which content several camera angles.
I synch them, then puts them in my timeline with other elements such as Lowerthirds, logos, and other sub captions.
Funny enough there is a lag when the whole project is compressed for DVD burning.
Video 1 has the live feed audio file and Video 2 is simply synched with video 1.
Ounce the compression is done, Video 2 is synched with audio but not Video 1. Video1 is late.
I do not understand why since, Video 1 has the original audio file for the entire project.
However when the project is compessed for windows media player the issue disappears.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Dan
    PS: CS3

Usually Premiere pro should send the compressed media directly to encore and burn it. But nop it doesn't work that way It bugg all the time doing that.
So I Export it via the Adobe Media Encoder then choose MPEG2-DVD
    Range: Entire Sequence
    Preset: NTSC Medium Quality
NTSC, 720x480, 29.97 drop frame (fps), lower, Quality 3.0
    48 kHz, 16 bit, PCM
VBR, 1 Pass, min 1.50, Target 4.00, Max 7.00 (mbps)
The project is 28min 40 long and gives me a compressed file of about 2 GB.
Right there before I even burn to DVD with Encore (by importing the 2GB file as timeline),
    There is an audio lag.
Then I shut Premiere pro, launch Encore, import the 2GB file as timeline hit the built key, disregard the error message and THe DVD id burned.
I don't think Encore is the problem, I think It comes from Premiere Pro. How can the Video contact the only audio file not be in synch with itself???
    I am so confused...
    THanks for your help!
    Dan
PS: Do you know any good tutorial about compression tips so I can get better result

when i burn my final project, my text is at 13 point and when it plays on my TV it is blurry, messy, pretty much unreadable. I know my TV is REALLY crappy (hooked up through Composite cable) but i was just wondering if there is some specifications on text size or is there some special trick to get it to look perfect? Some compression tips or maybe i'm not setting it up right.

  • Pixel conversion and h.264 questions

I have some home movies on my hard drive that I imported using Roxio. I imported them in DV/DVCPRO because quicktime on windows doesn't handle mpeg2 (the other option on Roxio). My problem is that I want to make copies to give to my brother who has a Mac so he can edit them.
    Questions:
    1. DVCPRO files are 720x480 rectangular pixels, how can I import them into quicktime so it converts them to square pixels (640x480) without resizing it and losing information?
    2. What is the best format to convert them into so he can edit on a Mac and then create a DVD that won't have any loss of resolution from the original files?
    3. Can quicktime on a Mac handle the conversion of rectangular to square pixels? I could give him copies of the uncompressed files then.
    4. Unrelated to the above questions: Is there a qood tutorial on H.264, that would answer for example, what is the appropriate bit rate for viewing on my machine vs. sending over a DSL, etc.
    thanks

Send the original source files on a DVD (more than one if it will not fit).
Don't worry about the square versus rectangular pixel issue. Computers use square pixels and most TV's use "lines".
NTSC "video" is sized 720X480. The QuickTime conversion would be 640X480. The data is the same.
You'll introduce other issues if your convert the current .dv file to any other format. Your brother can import (without any conversion) your .dv files directly into iMovie (or other DV editor apps). Bonus. You both save computer time.
It may take a while to burn all of the needed DVD's and postage is about $.84 to mail one. But you'll both be working with the source (sort of) files.
As to tutorials about compression (tips, tricks etc.) there are hundreds of them all over the Web. I even wrote a book "QuickTime Pro: Explained" that may be useful. Click on my profile for more info.

I may benefit financially (if someone actually buys my work) from links in my profile.

  • SD card in the cd slot

I just did a very stupid thing!!!
I wanted to upload some photos from my SD card, and I accidentally put it in the cd/dvd slot instead of in the SD slot. Now it's stuck there, and I can't get it out - anyone knows if it's possible to get it out without harming the iMac, or do I have to go to the Apple Store to get help?
    Stupid me
    Happy New Year everyone!

I did that very same stupid thing! I imagine lots of people will - the slots are just too close together and they are not visible from the side you are typically looking at. Oh, well, it is a BEAUTIFUL and powerful machine, just not quite perfect, yet!
My husband fished out the card for me. Here is what he did:
I took a sheet of cereal-box cardboard (about .4 mm thick and folded it in half vertically and then horizontally to get a quadruple thickness. From this I cut an "L" shape 13cm tall, 6.5 cm across the base, and about 1.7 cm wide, with the second fold along the tall back of the L and the first fold along the base. This way, the base tends to spread out somewhat. (Previous sweeps with single thicknesses of cardboard had failed to catch the SD card.) Compressing tip
of the base with my fingers, I inserted it high into the CD slot (unit unplugged, by the way), hooked it downward until it felt as if it hit the bottom of the slot, and dragged it outward. It pushed the SD card out. At no point was any noteworthy amount of force required.

  • Asking for tips or suggestions re: DVD backups and compression

Hey there all.  I'm hoping to get some nice DVD backups from dual layered DVD9 discs so that they can potentially fit on DVD5.  I would really love to keep the DVD menus that are on the discs (special features, subtitles, and so fourth.)
I've seen the following threads which have proven somewhat helpful, but they are rather out dated:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 60#p525660
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53344
I've looked at k9copy but am afraid of all the dependencies it pulls up with it.  It does the job though, maybe with telecine errors in some cases from what I've seen testing it.
vobcopy seems very promising, especially when using the following com
    vobcopy -m /mounted/dvd/
It backs up the entire DVD successfully from what I've seen, but not compressed at all.  (but it does retain the menus and the all wanted special features and various subtitle selections).
So, "vamps" may bring what I need to the table - I hope.
    vamps -e 1.50 -a 1 < ./large.vob > ./small.vob
That above, would supposedly turn a 7.5 gb .vob into a ~5gb .vob .  I've tested it on a smaller on a smaller scale (1gb .vob to ~645mb)
I am not quite sure how to do this with the whole tree I am left with, though, which looks similar to the following.
    $ ls ./NAME_OF_DVD/VIDEO_TS/
    VIDEO_TS.BUP VTS_01_0.IFO VTS_01_3.VOB VTS_02_0.BUP VTS_03_0.BUP VTS_04_0.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.IFO VTS_01_0.VOB VTS_01_4.VOB VTS_02_0.IFO VTS_03_0.IFO VTS_04_0.VOB
    VIDEO_TS.VOB VTS_01_1.VOB VTS_01_5.VOB VTS_02_1.VOB VTS_03_1.VOB VTS_04_1.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP VTS_01_2.VOB VTS_01_6.VOB VTS_02_2.VOB VTS_04_0.BUP
    EDIT:
Stumbled across 'backlite' which is a qt based copy of k9copy.  Very promising from my first few impressions though I'm yet to thouroughly try this guy out.  Any thoughts from other's how may know about it?
It would also be nice to learn how to effectively do this task from the comfort of a terminal.

OWC has nice options for both optical and hard drives.
    http://www.macsales.com/
They are a Mac-oriented vendor, so the products they sell work with Macs. On the hard drive side, they sell most of their enclosures as a "0 GB" kit, so you can find a good deal on the drive mechanism elsewhere, and get the exact make and model you want.
As for USB versus FireWire, FireWire 800 will obviously be faster. However, if the drive is going to be used for something like Time Machine, where speed is not crucial, a less expensive USB 2.0 drive will be fine. My Time Machine drive is connected by USB 2.0.
You can get a FireWire hub, but daisy-chaining should work fine. The few available FireWire 800 hubs are expensive at the moment.

  • Tips on wrapping my brain around using compression and expansion

I have audio of an event where unfortunately some people were standing too far form the mic at points so their audio is low. What i am trying to do is wrap my brain around the Dynamics Processor to raise the low bits up to peak at -3db and then if anything peaks, I'd like to lower it to about -3db also. I'd like to keep the dynamic range between only about -8 and -3. Can anyone give me a play by on how to go about using any of the plugins to accomplish this?

You could try the Speech Volume Leveler effect under the Amplitude and Compression menu. Some experimentation may be needed to find the best parameters.

  • PDF File Size - any way to compress further?

We have are using the Crystal for .NET export method to export a report to a .pdf file, and are having an issue with the pdf file size on a report that contains images.  The images are stored in a SQL2005 database as blob or varbinary(max).  The report executes a stored procedure that selects data (including images) to produce a quotation.  There are input parms to decide which images to print (for example A, B or both A&B). Both types of images can appear at the line level on the quotation. Type A images print in the main report, Type B images are in a subreport.  Both the main report & subreport execute a stored procedure to select an image type.
Our issue, when both Type A and B image is selected to print on a 293 line quote.  The PDF file size is 44.23MB
When Type A only is selected, the PDF file size is 2.64MB
When Type B only is selected, the PFD file size is 43.95MB.
There are more Type B images that would print at the line level than Type A, but is there any way to compress this down further as it is too large to email.

You mention that you are using Crystal for .NET, but not what version; CR for .NET 2003, 2005, 2008. 2010?
Applying the latest fixes for the correct version of CR would be the first thing to do.
Next, I'd have a close look at image B as it appears to be the one adding the most "bulk". How is this image different from image A?
    General tips re. images:
    Save the files a BMPs.
When .jpg image is inserted into Crystal Reports it is converted into bitmap format and as the result of the conversion the report may loose some quality, scale and other issues may arise... E.g.; Crystal Reports is not so good a graphics management tool
When an image is saved as a .bmp, then there is no conversion required and thus the quality of the image should be preserved.
Best practice: save the image with high resolution and required size as a .bmp format then insert this image into Crystal Reports.
Resize the image to the smallest possible size and downgrade the DPI to 72. This will ensure your image is as small as possible and Crystal Reports will have to put in the least amount of work to display it.
Have a look ar KB [1241630 - Exporting a Crystal report (XI) to PDF generates a big PDF file|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_bi/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes%7B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333233343331333633333330%7D.do]. This KB, may apply to your version of CR, or not. In any case, you will have to use the KB as a guide and determine what the appropriate registry entry would be for your version of CR.
One more thing. Many people like to use jpg files as they are smaller than bmp files. However, as far as Crystal Reports is concerned, this is inconsequential. The report file will be the same size if a file is inserted as a jpg or a bmp. This is due to the jpg conversion to bmp Crystal Reports does internally.

  • HTTP Headers - enabling caching and compression with the portal?

Has anyone configured their web server (IIS or Apache) or use a commercial product to flawlessly cache and compress all content generated by the portal?
Compression and caching is critical for making our portal based applictions work for overseas users. It should be doable, just taking advantage of standard HTTP protocols, but implementing this a complex system like the portal is tricky, we seem to be generating different values in the HTTP Headers for the same types of files (such as CSS).
We are running Apache so can't take advantage of the built in compression capabilities of the .net portal. We are running the java vervion. 6.1 mp1, sql server 2000 (portal, search, collab, publisher, studio, analytics, custom .net and java portlets on remote server).
Basically our strategy is to compress all outgoing static and dynamic text content (html, CSS, javascript), and to cache all static files (CSS, javascript, images) for 6 months to a year depending on file type.
Here are some links on the subjects of caching and compression that I have compiled:

Netscape 4.x and below have terrible performance with nested tables.
    The

If IE and/or a recent version of Netscape/Mozilla is not possible then
    there are
    really only two options:
    1) Faster client hardware - not likely to be an acceptable solution.
    2) Minimize the number of portlets and the complexity within the portlets.
Neither of these solutions are a great answer, but the 4.7 series of
    Netscape is
getting pretty old. Having said that, we've got customers who want to

    to use IE 4 :)
Again, though, this problem is, I'm afraid out of our hands. It is the

  • Why is iphoto compressing to email?

I have a friend who is emailing photos from iphoto and her computer is automatically compressing them so they come through as a .sit attachment. Some of our friends can't open the photos because they don't have Stuffit Expander.
Her iphoto didn't use to do this. Normally they are supposed to just show up as pictures in the body of the email.
She does have a new camera, but under format she is choosing smaller for faster downloading... Her last photo she tried to send came through as a 43.6 kb size stuffed....
How can she make them not compress.

Stuffit Expander is free so those without it can go to the Stuffit site and download it. What type of computer and email application is your friend using? What process is she using to select and send the email? It's not something that can be accidently activated on the Mac as far as I know.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Quick tip - reducing PDF file size

My STANDARD menu for printing doesn't look anything like the one that is being used in the demo.
I do have the "cover & pages" part for *some documents*, but there is nothing there when I drop down concerning Color synching. I make a lot of PDF files and Sure would like to be able to reduce the size.
Where did the printing menu come from in the quick tip?

I can't seem to export PDFs smaller than 5 MB from Pages. The docs I'm exporting are only one or two pages in length with one small raster image and a few vectors. Exporting to PDF even at loweset "Good" quality produces a 5 MB file.
    Things I've tried:
The "Reduce File Size" option in Pages before exporting doesn't work––it sits forever at "Calculating file savings..." and never does anything.
Using the Compress PDF Workflow: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/compresspdfworkflow.html
This takes a 5 MB file and "compresses" it to 5.5 MB. Fail.
Using the "Compress PDF" Quartz filter when saving from Preview. Again, it actually makes the files larger, not smaller.
These files should be, at most, 1 MB. Any tips you have on shrinking PDF size from Pages would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Please hekp me reinstate my itunes library and playlists after my attempt to compress the windows music folder to save hard disk space. I have gone back to the music folder and unchecked the compression box and it looks like the music is reapperaing in itunes but none of the playlists, purchased music or apps have appeared. This is very frustrating aspent hours cleanin up unplayed music , old playlists the kids had done and recently purchased a substantial amount of music. I had synced the recent playlisst to my iphone yesterday and am loath to do another sync incase itunes wipes playlists from my iphone. Cn someone please help.

You can do a reverse sync to get playlists from your iPhone to your computer. This user tip should help you with this...
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive
